I've always thought of it like I'm the characters "guide or trainer" NOT the char myself. So since NWN I've had a female char I always create in any Fantasy game that I play (as well as a male char aka Roland) heh
I see nothing wrong with creating characters of the opposite gender...but as I've stated on other such threads I will NEVER RP as a female. Never. Every word that I type ingame is gender NEUTRAL and just general conversation. Sometimes it's fun to find out where other players are from in your group, what part of the world and that's fine...but I personally never no farther than that (male or female char)
I think it's TRUELY sad to hear about guys that intentionally RolePLay a female char just to beg items off some basically not very bright individual to begin with! I personally have never met a RL girl who roleplayed/spoke in game "like" a girl...the real females talk normal like the majority of players...if some fem char come up and start talking fem slang like honey or being all cute and flirty...I'd bet money that it's a guy messing around(sad) but true. If I make a Night Elf I will make it female, since the women were the fighters. if I make a Dwarf I will make a male. Easy as that. Some things works better as females.
CoH for example. I could never do a Brutish character, because that was just too much butt in glossy spandex for me to feel comfortable when I was playing in third person. So... Thinnish men, or females. Other games, I go mostly males.

The amazing thing about playing a female character over a male character is that you will get treated differently. People in the game will do all sorts of things for a female character they would never do for a male.
They buy things for you, provide you with information, generally are more friendly to you. This is even after they know that you really are a male.
I believe this shows that most males think only with their hormones, as juvenile as that might be.
Since when is your avatar supposed to represent you? Do you actually role play in WoW? Cause i've seen one person in WoW role play for about 3 minutes and that was a naked drunken dwarf...
Anyway though honestly some races just don't do well with males and some with females. Human males? Look ridiculous in my opinion. How is anyone supposed to play a rogue looking like a swedish log thrower? Dwarf women? Way to butch for me. I have always based my choice of sex for char by what the models offer, and I always try to go male first but sometimes I just can't do it. In all my experiences though of playing female or male there has never been any difference in the way people treat me. Maybe its because I don't associate myself with the type who is into cyber or online relationships or something? I actually play female characters because pixalated or not id rather look at something attractive... However going a fatty female dwarf isnt the way to go id be a guy in that situation. <- ignorant i know. What i dont like about playing a female character is people think im a girl in real life which isnt so bad sometimes because winning as much as i did PvP made them feel less of a man being beaten by a "girl" <-ignorant again I know.

I recently play many females on mmorpg's including lineage II(just tried, didn't like the game much) because I like the aesthetics, curved lines and all that, call me whatever you want, I don't give a damn. But playing your sex is also good because sometim you meet nice people like from the other gender that you can also meet in RL. not as in mating/dating services, I hate that kind of relationships, i like private real ones and none other. I remember people getting married in game and etc in Asehrons Call and RO, i think it's fine to play both as long as you tell people your rl gender when they ask. I am not homophobic but I prefer girls. I actually don't like most of the male population, yet thinking again, I don't like many people at all, jsut 1 or 2. but they sseem to like me, It's stupidly funny.

Quick question for all you people that play females, what do you feel when a guy approaches you or comes on to you? So to answer your question NO I do not think its okay for a guy to play a female. It just creeps people out in general and would make MMO gaming a MUCH more pleasuralble experience for everyone including REAL females.

First of all, the character is NOT you. It is a game. It is role playing. That means you are playing a role. Now - if you are a guy playing a girl, and you run around tellng people you are a girl, and you do things outside of the game (like solicit someone for a private chat), well ... I am not even saying that is wrong, just that maybe it is not quite appropriate for the game.
I will use CoH as an example. Every guy in the game, for the most part, has girls and guys that they play with. Whether their "primary" toon is a guy or a girl is irrelevant, for the most part. People typically don't ask.
I play with both. It depends. I like female warriors. I like the idea that a woman is a bad ass with a sword. I like playing other chars as either male or female. In WoW, I will have one female char, and probably 6 males. Maybe one other female for fun, like a gnome or something.
There is NOTHING wrong with playing either gender and for those of you who have hangups, you need to grow up. And people need to not ask about real life gender. What difference does it make? Unless the person is actively providing personal info, leave it alone. Just my opinion, of course. I never ask, because I don't care what you do or what you are in real life.

Also most people I know, including myself have always wondered what it would be like to be of the opposite sex and well MMORPG's are a perfect source to find out without having to go through all the pain and implications of losing your "treasured companion", as well as the hospital bills which i'm sure aren't very kind. I enjoy being a male but wouldn't mind being able to switch back and forth at will. Make life more interesting not to mention being able to get away with all sorts of crimes. They will be looking for a male, so you just become a female. Does this make me sick? Probably to some of you, but I don't really care.. Like I said before, it's not like I'll ever meet any of you.

You hit the nail on the head. Too many players use mmog primarily to find friends (or attempt to find girlfriends/boyfriends) or this becomes an objective. It is those players that are on the whole going to be angry/annoyed/disappointed if the find out their in-game boyfriend is really a being played by a female.
The situation in a MMORPG is totally different from a normal chat room environment where you might expect most people to be honest in relation to at least their gender if little else. If you have issues understanding these issues in a role-play environment, yo're going to be even less well equiped to spot/deal with them in a pure chat environment.
So what happens then if the In-Game B/F is played by a Female and the In-Game G/F is played by a Male? Then they fall madly in love with each other in RL. Sounds like gender bending love to me. lol..

And yes i am 18(still so young eh?). But most gamers are to my knowledge from what ive read the average mmorpg playerbase is 18-23. I'll be first to tell anyone im no "fine cut of meat" "man of the hour" "walks into the room and the girls all drop dead because im so handsome". Yet there are so many people who claim to be that online. Heck I even talked to this one guy for about a year(from our legends of might and magic clan). And like one day he came out and told us he was just lieing to us about his life and everything. HELL he was in another clan in LoMM and was just in their to spy on our training and ruin our matches(ie our plans and stuff). Of course we kicked him out of the clan. But its still annoying to find people like that on the internet.
I treat WoW like a game, i know everyone is playing the game, but sometimes i just like to sit and chat, you know break the monotony of it. I know the characters aren't really the people.

It's just when im playing games online i like to make friends to play with and make chars with and generally just hang with while playing the game. Yet everyone seems to want to be the sexiest baddest strongest guy on the internet. (most avid flamers tend to be like 13 yrs old)

It's not even interesting if a player is the same sex in real life, or wishes it, or sercretly or not dreams of it IRL. Knowing that the majority of the online gamers are still male, be glad that some pretend to be female, it might get dull in a totally male Warcraft Universum.
The thing that I find important, is the roleplay part. If you want to change sex in game, act like it. Use your imagination and stay in character as good as you can. Most people in games wil never meet IRL, so who give a F*. As long as the (game) fantasy is not too much disturbed by bad rolplaying....

So what happens then if the In-Game B/F is played by a Female and the In-Game G/F is played by a Male? Then they fall madly in love with each other in RL. Sounds like gender bending love to me. lol..

It's not even interesting if a player is the same sex in real life, or wishes it, or sercretly or not dreams of it IRL. Knowing that the majority of the online gamers are still male, be glad that some pretend to be female, it might get dull in a totally male Warcraft Universum.
The thing that I find important, is the roleplay part. If you want to change sex in game, act like it. Use your imagination and stay in character as good as you can. Most people in games wil never meet IRL, so who give a F*. As long as the (game) fantasy is not too much disturbed by bad rolplaying....
