how long will it be before 5-hour breaks become the norm throughout the world not just China-->news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4183340.stm
Why aren't there more warnings in and out of game to take breaks?
Why has no-one been held accountable or sued?
Is it because most of them are Asian and no-one cares? Is it because no-one wants to believe that a game can take over someone's live so much that only someone with "no self-control" will die?
Why aren't more people asking questions like me?!

Because If a person ignore's basic functions like eating/drinking and sleeping .... maybe the person is asking for it? What is to say this fiend doesn't get 2 accounts and switch off every 5 hours? But hey the world seems to feel the need to idiot proof everything. we do. Here is a short list below:

    1) Do not put fan belt on while car engine is running.

    2) Found a package of silicon in with my stereo equipment, much to my dismay it wasn't chicklets ... Warning : Do not eat!

    3) Got a coffee from McDonalds ... Warning:Hot ... shit, really? I normally get mine cold.

... just some quick ones off the top of my head. Feel free to add to the stupid list.

List is 2 deaths short. The parents who let their kid die should have been put down.

    I got some!
On a packet of peanuts I ate yesterday: Warning! May contain nuts!
The foreign ones are best though; I saw some taiwanese kitchen knives with the extremely sage advice of: Warning! Keep out of children!
Back on topic though; people who neglect themselves to the point of death are emotionally unstable and self-destructive. They don't deserve the enmity that the general public heap upon them .. calling them retards or championing their death as a triumph of darwinism.
They're just mentally ill. The suggestion that the MMO is to blame is just laughable.

    * leaps on the soapbox *

Disclaimers are used to greatly reduce the liability of the company.  Take "superman capes" capes for example.  The "this cape does not enable you to fly" might have been there from the start, but it makes you think; if it wasn't, then some poor happless fool tried to fly.  Disclaimers are already in place.  "Gaming Experience may change during online play" is an all-encompassing disclaimer.  That alone should suffice.

If you're a parent and you know your child suffers from hyperactivity, depression, gets bullied at school, and/or doesn't have a lot of friends; then by buying them a game to keep them occupied is no different than handing them a loaded gun.  You're putting a bad thing into an already dangerous situation.  The same goes for adults that buy them games for themselves.

It is one thing to play a MMO for entertainment, and to take your mind off real-life stuff. It is something different entirely when that entertainment becomes your life. If you find yourself thinking that your life in the game is better than your real-life, then you need to quit the game immeditally.  When I was playing Everquest, I found myself playing the game more than anything else.  3-4hrs of sleep when you're 18-19yrs old isn't very healthy.  I was always "calling in sick" to work, just to play the game/raid.  I've lost jobs because of my incompetence.  I began viewing my ingame friends with more regard than my RL friends  Eventually I quit, and moved on.  However, I look back on it and realize; if I was a weaker person, what would I have done?  It scares me to think about it.  I'm quite a bit older now, and I've substantially cut back the amount of time I spend gaming during the week. (Weekends are a totally different demon =p ).  I generally only spend 2-3hrs in game now during any given weekday.  I probably only play 10-12hrs max during a normal work week.  Weekends will be longer, but it saves me money =p.  I'm better off now because of my limitations I imposed.

Use common sense and impose your onwn restrictions.  Don't rely on the government or the game developer to do it for you.  If you have a reliable family member, ask them to do it for you.

It really disgusts me when I see posts along the lines of "anyone that addicted to MMO's deserves to die". I really wonder if they would be saying the same thing if that was their friend or family member who had to die with such a lonely, depressing, lost feeling. Having an addiction so severe to the point where people are ignoring hunger and other human needs does not mean they deserve to die, it means they need help.

    We're not socialist, China is.

They believe its ok to tell people what to think and what to do and how to act.

We believe in an individuals right to chose, be that choice a good one or a bad one.

Free will is a thing that our nation has put a value on that is above that of an individual's life.

People need to take more personal responsibility for their own actions, if you get addicted to something its YOUR fault.  YOU Made a choice.

The games didn't kill them - sitting on their ass not eating or exercising properly killed them. Had they been sitting on their asses reading a book or watching TV, the same thing would have happened.

The solution is clear - we need to ban chairs. Chairs are the real killer here, and they've gone unregulated and unchallenged for thousands of years. Isn't it time we took a stand against chairs?

    love the post bono.

People need to realize that they are playing too much themselves. It's just sad that we as a world would think that we need a warning in a game saying that we have been playing too long. Isn't it bad enough that we have to have a warning on a cup of coffee saying that contents are very hot... it's hot coffee, should the contents be cold? it seems like we are losing the ability to use common sense, and realize that things are dangerous.

Those that die playing games cannot blame the developers, or the games, they have only themselves to blame. Sorry to say it but it is true, and parents that would say that their kids are playing too many games need to look at their own failures are parenting and not blame those that created the entertainment. Lets not just live in a society that that blames others for failures, and lets look at our own ignorance and mistakes.

Sorry to hear that someone has died from playing a game too much, but people die everyday. Playing games is still far safer as a method of entertainment over say sky diving or bungie jumping.

Why is it okay that people have died by hanging?  Do we sue rope manufacturers over it?  Do we institute regulations on ropes that would make them hard to use to hang yourself?

It's not so much that it's okay as that any measures put into place to "fix" it would be worse than the problem they're meant to address.

Thing is no mater how much they try to put warnings and such on games and have disconnects for certain number hours for under 18 crowd you will still have people dying or killing themselves over these game.It is unfortunate that this happens but we are human and are subject to getting into routines that we don't realize we are doing.

This was an unfortunate incident that we had happen in EQ,I did not know this individual, but someone apparently hacked his account and stole all his awesome gear off his account and characters,he got real depressed over several days and commited suicide.

People have killed themselves over games for a long long time before MMOs.

I remember several stories back in the EQ time period  of people who lost everything and went postal and offed themselves.

Its tragic but people who are depressed will find a reason to live or they won't, and if they base their entire self worth on a video game that is a psychological disorder.

Yes exactly! and why don't we have someone to tell us to breathe. And someone to tell us when we go to the can and someone to tell us to wipe our butt and someone to tell us to put one foot in front of the other when walking and someone to tell us that you are a moron like those fools who died because they were too stupid to get up off their butts and eat. This is a clear example of natural selection removing morons who should never live long enough to breed.

Because most of us were born with something called common sense. If you get hungry, you eat, if you gotta use the bathroom, you get up and go.

People who sit in front of a pc and die, are morons. This is coming from someone whos pends 50 - 90 hours a week in game.

This is not a developers issue, this is a stupid customer issue. You know how many people each year have to be taken to the hospital to be catheterized because they wouldnt get up from a slot machine or poker table to pee? Are we closing down the casino? No. Why? Cause the guys an idiot.

Everyone has freedom of will, and the games arent the enemy. Like the old saying, Guns dont kill people, People with guns kill people. You cant stop stupidity no matter how much you try.

If it was a friend or family member I cared about who was addicted and depressed over a game or something that happened in a game I would be their to help support them. Clearly for these kids they parents, guardians, or friends didn't notice or were unable to help them in a meaningful way. This still is not the fault of the game makers.

Even with warnings and all the support in the world some people are unable to get help. Look at those that are alchoholic and smokers, they are addicted and it takes a lot to help them get over the addiciton. Those that are addicted to games also need the same social support systems. Surprsingly it seems like a game that is built on the foundation of being social such as an mmo should be able to help their players even more so. Instead it seems to actually make it worse though, because the players who are addicted are instead lead to get even more addicted to try and show off and feel better about themselves. Only natural that if some serious problem occured in their game that they would be hit extra hard, and lead them to depression and thoughts of suicide.

I still blame the person and those around them that were unable to help them. For so many people games are just a nice way to get away from the troubles of the world for a little while, and get a bit of entertainment. Just like drinking, it is safe in moderation. Also just like drinking even with all the warnings in the world people will still not follow them. I am not mocking those that have died at all in saying all of this. I would not mock anyone that has died.

If it was someone I'd cared about, it wouldn't have happened. Truth is, these disturbed people likely aren't cared about by anyone. But being isolated or ignored is often part of the condition, isn't it? And it's still not the games fault...

Disclaimers on products are not there to protect the stupid. They're there to prevent frivolous lawsuits. Nothing can protect a determined dumbass.

People need to take more personal responsibility for their own actions, if you get addicted to something its YOUR fault.  YOU Made a choice.

If by "we" you mean the US, then you are quite wrong. Our system has aspects of socialism(Nanny state), fascism(warfare/police state) mixed together in a horrid witches brew of power and corruption.  Only lip service(at best...) is paid to the original principles of the Constitution and Bill of Rights(look at the last three of our Dear Leaders(including the current one) for clear evidence of that.  I quite agree that people should be responsible for their actions/inactions.  But if you believe that our Dear Leaders(and their lap dog corporate mass media) don't tell people what to think, and how to act, then you've not been paying attention for decades.

I see the OP hasn't been back since starting this thread. Truthfully, any and everything can be an addiction, not just a game. There are people who drink to much, smoke to much, get high, people who read tons of books, work-aholics, people that watch TV 15 hours a day. Are we to sue their job, sue the tv stations? Why stop there, we can sue the companies that make TV's and the cable companies for having to many channels  while were at it. Perhaps we can sue the bookstore, the library.

I think you see my point in how ridiculous this would be.  It is up to us to control ourselves, not some company or the goverment. It is up the the parents to say no to their 15 year old and tell them they have no business playing online with the adults, let alone running all night sessions.

I personally think you started this thread to troll but there is my answer.

Is it because most of them are Asian and no-one cares? Is it because no-one wants to believe that a game can take over someone's live so much that only someone with "no self-control" will die?
Why aren't more people asking questions like me?!

Its called thinning the herd.  The human race is better off with fewer morons in the gene pool.

Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?

Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.

Whats really funny is he puts "no self control" in quotes...

So your saying that they DID have self control, or are you saying that you don't believe they lacked it?

I'm confused by that most of all...

Clearly they had something wrong with them if they could ignore the need for sleep and food.

It is a psychological disorder if you cannot prioritize food over pleasure.
