The same can be applied to the people who write those little warnings. Write whatever the hell you want, A) No one reads it anyways, people don't care. You can rant, write, and yell all you want, an idiot is an idiot. And only an idiot dies playing a video game, you know when you're hungry, tired or not feeling well. It's not like they're feeling fine and then go kapoop and die.
And as for the guy committing suicide, I hate to sound rude, but anyone ending their life over a freaking video game has some major issues that a warning can't fix.

I always giggle when I see someone post "omg, if they're stupid enough to do that; they deserve to die". It makes you wonder if they truely believe the crap they are posting on the forums, or if they're only trying to rile someone up since they're nothing more than an anonymous person posting on a public forum.
Regardless of the reasons behind it, if a person dies because of gaming too much; then it is their own fault. However, going as far to say "ah, they deserved it"; is too much and extremely narrow minded and cruel.

I just found out that being born can lead to your death! Why isn't the government stopping people from being born?!?
Lol. Gold.
But seriously. No person could be that stupid that they die infront of a computer. Unintensionally.
He obviously chose to die that way. Who cares.
Now if he died as a result of a computer virus that tansmits via monitor, through the eyes, to the brain. (similar to epilepsy) With the result being death. But it effects all people who play the game and reach max level. Then maybe you could cry for a product recall.
I remember in the middle 80's yes im older 36 but not too old That the local preachers raised cane because the Flea market added some video games and the local news came out and such they had to remove them for a bit....
My point are you saying these guys where right that they are visionaries and that video games are the work of the devil and you will die playing them?
I see the OP hasn't been back since starting this thread. Truthfully, any and everything can be an addiction, not just a game. There are people who drink to much, smoke to much, get high, people who read tons of books, work-aholics, people that watch TV 15 hours a day. Are we to sue their job, sue the tv stations? Why stop there, we can sue the companies that make TV's and the cable companies for having to many channels while were at it. Perhaps we can sue the bookstore, the library. I think you see my point in how ridiculous this would be. It is up to us to control ourselves, not some company or the goverment. It is up the the parents to say no to their 15 year old and tell them they have no business playing online with the adults, let alone running all night sessions. I personally think you started this thread to troll but there is my answer.
I've been reading and watching this thread that's why. I think some people do need genuine help, but I hate the way an organisation takes the 12 steps from AA and changes the wording slightly.
Why has no-one been reported as dying from playing Tetris, for example, which is arguably as addictive as some MMO's? Is it because that has a save point or can be paused. Now that video-games make more money than movies or music, I find it strange that isn't more responsibility. MMO's, in my opinion, are much more pernicious than Manhunt 2 or GTA.
So the phenomena of MMO or video game 'addiction' is nonsense then and it is all just bad parenting?
Yeah I think its absolutely appaling that no safety warnings are given out with games......because they are EXTREMELY dangerous products!!!! I have been playing Spellborn recently and I nearly died!! I was playing it for days on end without stopping once!! I didnt eat anything, drink anything or sleep at all because the damned game didnt tell me too! Fortunately a friend found me in time and saved my life. Phew! That was a real close call I can tell ya. Now I deeply fear playing any more of these dangerous games.......but......but.......I MUST play them! I cannot stop!! However if a safety warning appeared every hour saying things like "Take a 20 minute break", "Go to the toilet" or "Isnt it time you went to sleep young man?" then I might feel more safe playing as my life would not be put into such extreme danger. I also believe that safety warnings should be attached to EVERYTHING!!! I was reading a book several weeks ago and guess what? I NEARLY DIED!!!! I couldnt put it down......and the problem is that I'm a slooooooowwww reader. Again I didnt eat, sleep or even go to the toilet when I needed to. I was sat in a pool of my own excrement and urine. It was very unhealthy indeed. Fortunately I was saved by a friend again. None of this would have happened if there was a safety warning on every 10th page.......but because I wasnt told how to look after myself, that damned book nearly killed me!!! So yes I call for safety warnings on everything!! This is a very dangerous world we live in and millions of peoples lives are being put at risk with every game, book, film, food, drink, car, bike, horse, plane or any other object or activity that gets utilised by someone. My heart goes out to every deeply intelligent and wise soul that has been snuffed out by a lethal computer game. It needs to be stopped or it wont be long before the entire human race becomes extinct!
Think of video games like a spray bottle of whipped cream, Stores sell them assuming that the consumer assuming he or she has common sense and will make cakes, ice cream, pastries, and vaginas even more delicious. They have no control over the people that lack common sense and empty the bottle and inhale the chemicals. Same with medicine and cleaning products, warnings or not, some people are idiot's or make mistakes.
Not meaning to be harsh but it just goes to show that anything and everything can be addictive and like all addictive products should be done in moderation.
"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"

Is it all the parents fault? No.
I can't say this any clearer; it is the responsibility of the individual to suffer the consequences of his/her actions. If your poor judgement leads to your death then you only have yourself to blame.

Why aren't there more warnings in and out of game to take breaks? You do know that people can have their own responsibilty, okay I know years back someone could put her cat into the microwave and sue the company cause there was no warning label on the box that a cat could not be put into it, but seriously, it's people stupidity that needs labels. Why has no-one been held accountable or sued? Can't really sue a dead person now can you, wel you could try but not sure if it will have results. Cause the only one accountable is the person that seemed stupid enough to game him/her self to death. Is it because most of them are Asian and no-one cares? Is it because no-one wants to believe that a game can take over someone's live so much that only someone with "no self-control" will die? Well I definitly believe and see that games seem to take over people's life, not mine but see it happen many times, but still not seen it getting so lost that a person playes himself to death, thats just the most stupid thing a person could do, unless that person has dropped at the spot with a gamesystem, unaware of education, unaware of things in this world, then yeah such a person would be dumb enough to perhaps play himself to death if they don't know there is more to life then a game. Why aren't more people asking questions like me?! Because sorry to say why should we, should we now post warning for people who perhaps walk out the door in the morning going to work and make sure they notice ALL dangers, which means even walking the boardwalk could get your killed if a drunkdriver might drive hte lane and hit you, so this I feel is the reason why nobody really cares as it's the induviduals own responsibility, and if the effect if that person dying then it is still his/her own fault and most definitly the game has absolute nothing to do with it.
I know this must have been said before in this thread but here goes anyways. Nature has a way of weeding out the weak, the sickly and the terminally stupid. I think most of the gamers on your list there fit into the last category.
Because people are responsible for themselves. Not the game company, not the government.
One should beware of these kinds of comments about "responsibility" as a personal disposition. Responsibility is a hollow and superficial device to make people believe they are in control of their own destinies as a matter of free-will and choice. Of course it is nothing of the sort. Instead the entire "responsibilization" rhetoric is positioned by those who control how we act and think. In effect "being responsible" means to follow a code of duty that is superimposed on people by governments, companies and institutions. (e.g. responsible parents and adults) It is myth and has no basis in how things actually get done.
Please, don't. That post was hardy applicable to the topic at all, and most likely only served to make yourself feel more intelligent based on the replies you expected to get.
Really funny how most people only comment evolve around 'natural selection'. Really the most simplistic way to see and analyze a situation. I did not read all the post but the one I read all failed to mention mental disease.
Assuming you mean that the people affected could have had a mental disease ( and thus no self control ), then I agree that there could be controls put in place for these specific people. Ethicly this would be the right thing to do and I personally know some very ill people who could benefit from restrictions on nearly everything in everday life.
Why don't we? These people are in the vast minority and generally restrictions are placed on all people, most of which do not need this and should have enough common sense to take care of themselves. This argument is similar to the violent games argument that is becoming very popular. Some people are predisposed to violence and it does affect them, however it is the vast minority and I think that anyone here can tell you that games don't make them want to do violent things.
I think that the best solution is to make parental controls in MMOs the norm and make the inclusion of this feature widely known. Not only would it make parents happy (and their children hate them forever) but it could help anyone with mental disabilities who are being taken care of. Just looking at a few of these people who died, at least 2 were both adults and living with their parents.
P.S. I want to clear up your misconception about natural selection. People with disabilities dying not only fits within description of natural selection, it is why it works. These weak genes do not get passed down to the next generation, which makes us stronger as a species. However, we are not all Hitlers. Most people have ethics that stop them from letting the frail and weak die.

As someone that has played games like SWG sometimes 14 hours in a day, yes I believe mmo's can be an addiction. I've also watched TV 14 hours in a day thanks to my lovely TiVo, something is always on. However if I watch it 30 hours without getting rest then I am just stupid.
I think instead of trying to sue the game makers and forcing them to try to police us, why not sue the familes of these people. I'm sorry you can't hide gaming 30 hours straight, someone in the family knows. So why aren't they getting them help? Probably because they didn't really take it seriously until after the fact.

It is ok for people to die playing MMO's. Because if you are playing MMO's you already have no life anyway.
In fact if you don't die after playing MMO's there's something wrong with Mother Nature.
It's okay for them to die because they drop good loot.
