Give your wild accusations based on ignorance, and your apparent inability to understand the simplest everyday concepts - no I don't trust you.  Or rather I don't trust your opinion as you have demonstrated already you argue based on incomplete and wrong information

I never said anything about his previous "employment". I only mentioned that he had only reviewed 2 games for eurogamer. You have yet to show anything that proves me wrong on that point.

You can actually read the statement both ways. But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you meant his record with Eurogamer.  Why then are you making such irrelevant and useless observations?

Anyway - the damage is done.  To me the review meant that I would not have bought the game., but maybe would have tried the demo.  Seeing the juvenile tantrums thrown by the game "community" , the reaction of the mods on the forum, then for me I think the community is doing a fine job of driving people away moreso than any review can?

Lol, who said we care? Are you so vain, that we actually care that you want to stay away from this game?

It tells tales about you, that you are that affected by such a biased and flawed a review.

No-one said you cared - not even me.  Why do you point this out btw?  I couldn't  care about your opinion, you couldn't care about mine but we'll still post them anyway.  Which is nice.

Oh - and it says tales about you that you can't even read my post and pick up that it's people like you that will mean DFO fails, not the review.  The reaction of most of the fanboys makes some of rubbish spewed out in WOW public channels appear like the highest of Sartorial wit.   Looks like the DFO really has achieved something.

If you know me, you would know that Im not a fanboi (you can look in my post history). Im not a hater either.

But at least I tried the game, which the reviewer didn't.

And you are obviously not clever enough to see through the obvious flaws and bias in the review.

It was YOU who started talking about staying away. You know what? You are not a special little snowflake that the entire world watches in awe. The world doesn't give a sh!t about you - so don't come here and try to tell us what you will or will not do.

I am sincerely happier to see you stay away.

You're right. I don't know you.  I don't want to know you, and I really really don't care about you or your opinions so I wont file through your posting history if it's all the same.  And it seems as though you still don't understand that it's not the review doing the long term damage here - it's people like you and your reaction to the review that is doing the damage.  I'm irrelevant in all this - as you said my opinion doesn't matter to the future of the game really, and you're right in that.  The impression of the DFO community does though.  Your responses seem typical of most of the DFO players in this whole debacle, and the only impression they are giving is of immature, arrogant, fanboys.  I don't want to play a MMO with people like you and I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

Oh, and unless you own this site then please don't be so arrogant as to command me to stay away.  With all this frothing at the mouth about not caring about my opinion, I'm having trouble believing that you are so hypocritical that you think for one iota of a second that I care about yours.

    Equip weapons to a hotbar.

Change from one weapon to another and sometimes it SHEATHS  the weapon.

Then you have to scramble to unsheath that weapon.

This process can take up to ten seconds as you stumble around to get the weapon redrawn.  Because of this little bug, sometimes you're not even sure you got the correct weapon equiped; wich then leads to the frantic pressing of buttons to get your weapon out before you die.

When you come out of FPS mode the game won't recognize button presses, except to chat.  You can auto run in a straight line and mess with your inventory, but you can't turn, or move forward with the W key or backwards with the S key.

However, you can chat in FPS mode by pressing enter.

Why were they able to make it so you can chat in FPS mode, but you can't move around in UI mode?

Sometimes you can equip a pot or food in the hot bar so that you an use it on the fly.  Sometimes you can hit the hot key more then once just to use that pot or food cause it didn't pick up the button press the first time.

When you open something like the skill screen, then open a sub catagory like say general skills, the UI gets all spastic and starts auto scrolling.  if you try to scroll down by draggin the scroll bar, when you let go, it pops back to the top again.

In order to get the window to work, you have to resize it.  Everytime you want to open a window like that, you have to resize it.  At least I do.

Because they put the cross hair in the middle of your head when they force you into 3rd person to fight in melee, you have no way of acurately judging distance from your target.  If you want to see who that guy is running at you in the distance while you're in melee mode, you have to switch to magic, archery, or unequipe your weapon cause sometimes, even when you have the crosshair on the guy, it doesn't show the name plate.

Sometimes, when you die and hit the space bar, it doesn't do anything.  Because it doesn't do anything, sometimes you have to actually lay there for at least a minute and then hit the spacebar so that you can die and respawn.  You could hit the spacebar over and over again for the duration of that minute, but it's annoying.

I got sick of actually asking people to gank me so that I didn't have to sit there.

BTW, Nothing in the game tells you that if you hit the spacebar you will die.  Nope, figured this out when I was trying to get the guy that killed me to gank me so that I didn't have to lay there.  I actually had to have this happen a few times before I understood what was happening.  When I hit the spacebar to add a space between Pleas and gank I would die.  That's how the game taught me to hit spacebar to kill myself.

When I'm looting at the same time as someone, I can pick up an item drag it to my bag, drop it, and that item will end up back on the corpse.  I grab it again, start to drag it, and the item vanishes halfway to my bag.

People keep sayig that skills only improve at 25, 50, 75, and 100.  This isnt' true.

Some will improve at 25, 50, 75, and 99 with 100 being a surge in power and then the skill drops back to 99 again.

Others will improve at 33, 66, and 99.

Other's will improve at each increase of 1.

Others don't even matter what the point of the skill is because it deosn't really matter until you hit 75 and get the master.  Like harvesting.  Sure, I use less stam over time, but it doesn't reduce it so much that it's so drastic from 1 to 75, and at 75 you get the mastery that reduces the harvesting process from 10 sec to 9 sec.  (notably there's been a change to harvesting with it being a one click and wait till node is empty, stam is drained, or there's in interupt.)

leveling some skills by .5 can take over a thousand uses of that skill; when you combine that with a cooldown, the amount of time it takes to level that skill becomes a MASSIVE grind.  Grinding is the result of an action in game that is repetitive.  When you have to do the same thing over an over an over to get some amount of gain it's called a grind.  It doesn't matter how you go about performing this action, it's still a grind.

You may have heard the DFO saying, "just play the game".  Well, that applies to all games, if you just play you can grind your skills.  What some people aren't comprehending, is that regardless of the system used, skill based or level based, if it takes an overwhelming amount of doing the same thing repetedly then it becomes a grind.

Like killing monsters to level your skills.  You don't hae a ton of quests of varying types to mask the gind.  You have static mobs.  you'll find a place that has mobs and hang out there for hours on end and kill the same one over and over and over again.  That's a grind, even though you're "just playing the game".

You disagree that the graphics aren't bad?

    Av disagrees with you.

If Av thought that they were fine, most every patch wouldn't have art assets in them.  Almost every patch Av has implimented things to improve the visuals of the game.  So while some can find the graphics to be ok, Av is obviously not satisfied with them.

    Players do not make content.

Developers do, and Av developers made very little of it.  Every MMO has a world with mobs in it, but DFO world is primarilly empty.  They add quests every patch just about.  Av must not think there's enough content in the game either, why do they add more quests?

Don't forget, 90%, yes 90%, not 60% of what is supposed to be there, isn't.  All that missing stuff is the content.  Not just fluff, cause fluff is content.  You may not need it, but more people need it then don't.

    I have to ask why

Why if you enjoy the game and read a review like this, you can say it's wrong, or the reviewer doesn't know what he's talking about, but not actually explain to the community what's actually wrong?

I saw it here in this thread, and on DFO's official forum.

The reviewer is wrong, but no one actually explains how.

The reviewer was harsh.  He didn't like the game, he actually exagerated some of the points, but in the end he WAS on the money.  The game has a LOT of MAGOR flaws, the reviewer didn't need to list every bug, he didn't need to point out what is good, cause in his OPINION the game is crap.

While the style of writting was rather harsh, it made points.  Points that are a lot better then just, "it's the greatest game ever!", or "worst MMO ever!"

He pointed things out that are obivouse, but fans would rather defend the game as a whole then acknowledge that, "yes, he made some valid points."

Edit:  LOL, that's a long rant.

BTW, there's a point in that wall of text.  I'm wondering if anyone understands it.

I dont follow Darkfall but i thought others would find it Interesting.

This is so obviously an EQ-clone player's review.

Quests? Storyline? Gimme a f*cking break.

Combat is fun. If you deny that, then you hate FPS combat. Simple as that.

Darkfall can easily be criticized for alot of things, but combat is *not* one of them.

That is such a poorly made generalization, i almost didn't hit the quote button.

I like FPS combat (BF series, Joint Ops, CS, CoD, etc). I DON'T like Darkfall's combat. So it is not as simple as you say.  The review is accurate.

Clean this up a bit, then send it to the mods here and see if you can get it put up as the official Darkfall review or a "correspondent overview".

Sorry cupcake, but enough people that have played the game and disliked it and have posted their views in this thread, they seem to side more with the reviewer, which tends to make me think he did indeed play.  Maybe you just aren't clever enough to see the reality of the review?

Seriously dude, because someone has a different opinion other than yours, doesn't make them wrong, nor does it mean they didn't play the game.  It means, they actually talked about their personal experiences, and, I know this is a shocker, they didn't enjoy the game.  Funny how that works.

If you like the game, great.  If you didn't like the review, great.  But to discount anothers experiences because they happen to have a different viewpoint than your own? Blinders on, fingers in the ears, and click your heels three times and say, "There's no game like DF, there's no game like DF, there's no game like DF".

Review might have been a litle too harsh, but the game does deserve a low score comnsidering how imcomplete it is.

  • jimsmith08jimsmith08 Member Posts: 1,039

a little overly harsh..but the game would never get glowing reviews anyway. id score it 4 or 5 myself, it has its good points but theyre outweighed by the bad.

The point isn't that someone didn't like the game... the point is that the reviewer never actually played the game he was paid to review. The comments about 30 seconds to switch weapons confirm this... I mean dragging things to a hotbar isn't exactly MMO rocket science.

It's EVE & WW2O all over again. Something that doesn't perscribe the expectations by being exactly the same as everything else and the lowest common denominator dismisses it out of hand. Yes, Darkfall has its issues. Yes, the UI isn't perfect. And yes, you can switch weapons in 2 seconds and chat while in interface mode.

Sadly for those of us who don't really like theme park MMOs because we find them completely sterile, artificial, and bland don't have a lot of choices. There are really only two MMOs where player actions can actually shape the game - EVE and Darkfall. You've got to be a bit of a masochist to enjoy Darkfall, but if you can look past its flaws it does provide the blank canvas for player interactions that the industry dominating EQ/WoW clones don't. As much as I wish it weren't the case we're a small niche in the market. I'd love to see something as polished as WoW which offered what Darkfall, EVE or old UO offers. It doesn't exist so we make do with what does.  Hell - look at the pipeline of upcoming MMOs. You've got Aion and SWTOR... we've got Mortal Online and Fallen Earth. Aion and SWTOR will both release and can pretty much be counted on to not suck. Mortal Online and Fallen Earth are pure speculation and if one of them isn't just as bad as Darkfall is I'll be pleasantly amazed.

    QFT.

The fact of the matter is that we don't really care that he didn't like the game. He is entitled to not liking it. What pisses us off is that the review if filled with lies, slander and FACTUAL errors. He obviously didn't play the game.

You know why most DF players won't admit its a shoddy game? Because no one likes to admit they just got ripped off for 50 dollars. You don't even get a real game, you get a strictly digital download. Then your expected to pay what AAA mmos charge. Someone who got suckered into buying something crappy will justify his purchase any way he can. I want a great sandbox pvp game as much as any hardcore players do but I am not going to act like DFO is a good game JUST because its the only newer one out there.

I'm wondering if anyone understands it.

haha wow that was a long post but your post was right. Darkfall is a shoddy game with a barren landscape. They can barely even handle the load of a thousand players, thats why they only sell a few copies of the game every few days. It also costs over 50$ for just a download. And 15 per month for a game with so little content.
