I'm not sure you can call SW the 'biggest IP in the world' anymore. It remains popular with the 30-something generation that grew up with it, and they've probably passed it on to their kids, but I know plenty of teens/20 somethings who don't give a crap about SW, and they're otherwise card-carrying nerds/geeks. Don't underestimate the damage that Lucas' ham-handed prequels (and the slew of low-quality Lucasarts titles that followed) did to the franchise. SW isn't the money-printing license it once was.
I sure hope this guy makes more posts about similar themes such as this since he obviously knows how any person feels about anything and has given us the....well, not pleasure, but the fun time of reading how we REALLY feel, not how we pretend to feel.
Hopefully he can instruct us in how we feel at certain sports. Or maybe a career / school? Ooo, What about lifestyle.

I'm looking for a Bioware style MMO, with all that it implies. I am not interested in yet another carbon copy of a miserably stagnant MMO genre.
Of course they are targeting single player and console gamers, Hell, they outnumber us by at least 2 to 1 and most likely a lot more. Bioware will be the first MMO company to really try to appeal to them. Square Enix never really tried thanks to their hardcore slant on game play for FFXI and most likey for FFXIV too. Just making a game playable with a controller isn't going to cut it. I whole heartedly believe they avoid the genre precisely because of their grindiness and focus on time sinks and repetitive, boring content. These kinds of players aren't interested in killing 5,000 mobs for a single level or 10,000 mobs for one level of faction or being forced to sit in front of the computer for 2 to 4 hours straight just to complete a single raid dungeon.
They aren't going to be interested in forced grouping. They aren't going to be interested in crafting. They will probably embrace PvP as long as it isn't yet another grind mechanism.
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal

Difference being, SWTOR is an MMORPG. So yes, I would pay an X amount of dollars monthly in order to play it. Also, I've made no comparisons. I've merely pointed out that people who've played the games and read books, etc; will enjoy the story.
Now, to address other people that are saying things like: "It consists of the same shit as other MMOs!" - Well yes, it does. However, it being the same style... in terms of grinding, questing, pvp and all that sort of stuff. Is because, that is what sells.
I do hope you people realize that developers HAVE sat down and thoroughly discussed next-gen MMO ideas. The thing is, it's hard. Instead of a leveling system which not only grants you a sense of acheivements, but sets you apart from others in terms of how much effort you have put into your character.... what would we insert there? How can be avoid the same sort of PvP that most MMOs have? Quests / Grinding ?
In place of this stuff, what sort of system / game mechanics should we implement? All I see is whining and complaining about it, but NEVER a single attempt any thorough explanation as to how to improve current conditions in modern MMOs.
But I definitely do agree with most of you who say there needs to be change.
I refuse to pay $15 a month for a KOTOR 3 the deciding factor for me will be if they add enough mmo content like community, crafting, pvp etc. This will be the only thing that will keep me intrested. Also i will not pay if they want every player to re roll over and over to get another story once i hit the lvl cap I want to be motivated to keep going.
not sure on the other things you are talking about ie crafting pvp but just from a general prespective they more than likely won't neglect them (since it is republic vs empire/jedi vs sith) I bet pvp will fit in there for sure. crafting is a tricky thing i doubt it will be like SWG which im thankful and sad about for one I hated crafting in SWG was to complex and time consuming for me I hope its more like lotro or eq2 crafting style. An as for rerolling I highly doubt Bioware would make that an option they are after all selling there game based around story (which i can't wait for since its heavy story) and they want you to exprience all 8 character granted they might make you switch to another server if your sith on one like WoW. Lastly whats the problem with a story driven game if I remember correctly aren't all mmo-RPG's to begin with thus story is almost always their. Now your probably just a wow junkie or a grinder but I always take the spare time to read those little yellow ! that NPC's give you idk i think there called quests, and aren't quests a backdrop of a story after all their's a reason you're killing wolfs or killing goldtooth. As far as im concerned this aspect of story is great i loved FFXI for the story and cutscneces, I liked archlord cause i though the story lore was interesting (ya i know i like archlord) I even like EQ and EQ2 for its story hey even wow has it in their among the mindless rush to lvl cap. Guess what im saying is all MMO's have a story behind them its just the players choice if they want to follow it or not if the OP doesn't want to follow it than why ruin it for others that really do.

Hehe. I read the title, had a gut feeling I was going to think the OP was an idiot, and lo and behold! My gut was right, once again. Here's a newsflash for you...NO ONE CARES. SWG was changed for a reason, and if you think they'd get anywhere NEAR WoW level with an SWG Pre-NGE style game, then you are an idiot. I'm sorry, but no game company actually seeking profits is going to produce what you want. There are plenty of games that have that sandbox style that just failed in the end...it's because you guys, as a demographic, are WAY too picky. Things have to be JUST SO, and god forbid there be any changes at all, because then there will be mass unsubs. Get over it, please.
lies SWg would be bigger and better if they left it alone...i could have been WoW and SWG side by side.....now its not and yes most of us are still pissed...

When you are going to put something in print then it is probably in your best interest to not just throw words around like that because in thirty five pages of replies the vast majority of them not only disagree with you but also disagree with your choice of words, having said that the mistake then is yours because we can only read what you wrote and take you for your word not assume what you meant by it.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
It blows my mind how out of touch developers are with the MMO base. With literally the biggest IP in the world, their focus is NOT what gamers have hated about mmos for years. No no, they will contiune to shovel the bullshit, but will now have STORY! Are you kidding me? The level of absurdity is making my brain swell. People hate classes, they hate levels, they hate watered-down gameplay and grind. Does BioWare plan on address these -universal- complaints? Fuck no, to them the problem with MMOs is story? My mind is utterly blown. From forum to forum across the internet, followers are asking the same basic questions. Whats pvp like? Whats pve like? How are the classes? What is the item system like? Yet over and over, every single dev blog and release is about story. I just can't wrap my head around the unsurpassable amount of ignorance by the dev teams. You would think that seeing the failings of supposed "blockbuster" MMOs like Aoc and WAR would send a message, but no. Alas we continue to be insulted by developers who ignore the -KEY- issues people have with the genre, and instead focus on something utterly worthless. Newsflash jackasses, your customers arn't upset with lack of story, they are upset with the cookie cutter MMO template that money grubing bandwagoners like you continue to reiterate and expect to sell.
While I understand your outrage....I suggest to you that at least 11 million people disagree with you, because THEY are still playing WoW.
You say that these "issues" with MMOs are universal. I think that you're taking YOUR opinion (and perhaps some of OUR opinions) and putting them on gamers abroad. You know, not that many gamers even frequent gaming forums, so the people you talk to HERE (or on other gaming forums)....are just a tiny tiny piece of an enormous whole. And MOST of those people have been gaming a very long time in comparison to many of the people that presently play any of the modern MMOs.
I could make up some speculative statistics. I won't. But I imagine it's safe to say that most people playing WoW, for instance, never played Ultima Online, or AO, or even DAoC. For many of them, WoW is their first MMO. So the problem, while it may FEEL "universal" to those of us that do frequent gaming forums.....it isn't at ALL.
Oh and btw....I've been playing games since Atari and MMOs since UO. I've played a LOT of them....and I happen to LIKE lore and storylines. But there are other things you mentioned that I'm not that fond of from our modern MMOs. However, I recognize, because of statistics and subscriptions....that I'm in the minority.
Hehe. I read the title, had a gut feeling I was going to think the OP was an idiot, and lo and behold! My gut was right, once again. Here's a newsflash for you...NO ONE CARES. STORY is big play KOTOR i want story i want starwars Op don't play it if you don't want it
Naw, it was heading down hill back in 2004 after crap loads of people left shortly after publish 10.
Agree, although I wouldn't go as far as calling him a tard. Gameplay and performance are my top issues coming from Warhammer but Star Wars games have always had some of the best stories and not falling in line with that would be a failure all of its own.
I've played every Star Wars game going in knowing there would be a good backstory and character development involved, I would expect nothing less from this game.
I have never given a damn about the story while in the game. I have read about lore for Warcraft and Warhammer lore outside of the game. The problem is the way the story is told in game. I don't want to read all this text on a parchment for every quest I pick up. I just want to get them and do them because if I read everything I will have wasted leveling time.
Now if there were cut scenes and good voice acting instead of text, I could appreciate the story of the MMO. At this point, though, I agree with the OP. So far no dev has made an MMO where I actually want to read the quest. I don't play games to read all day. I can do that with books and most likely get a better experience out of it. My problem is that we have the technology to have nice cut scenes (even with in-game graphics) and voice overs. I'm sorry but running up to each quest giver to read a bunch of text is not fun.
As long as the presentation of the stories are good, and not what we've been getting, I do give a crap about the story. If it's text, then I could care less. I have read some quests in MMOs, but for the most part I find what the objective is and do it.

And right THERE.....is why our MMOs are losing so much DEPTH. The younger generation of gamers, (a) doesn't like to read, (b) doesn't really care much about story...they just want to KILL STUFF, and (c) is so fucking focused on LEVELING that the game may as well just give them a damn max level character to START with and blow off any gameplay that doesn't have to do with either killing NPCs or other players.
Why don't you people just go play an FPS? That's the part of the game that matters most to you, after all. Your primary focus is to get to max level so that you can kick ass and take names, and not much else really matters.
I think I would like to see an MMO made that requires age verification of being over the age of 40 to play, a desire for a deeply interwoven and engaging story, a love for reading, and some kind of test for patience, with an understanding of the cliche...."anything worth a squat is worth working for and worth waiting for."

Or better yet, we stop worrying how others like to play and focus on how we like to play. There is room for everyone in these games and it does not take a 40 year old to figure that out. Posts like this just sound as though you are cranky someone is playing with your toy.

I've often suggested that a MMO company do just that for some folks. Log in and *ding* you are max level with all the top gear to fight to their hearts content. Of course it would never work because it would put everyone on a level playing field and those types of gamers hate that. They want the advantage not an actual challenge.

Wake up call.....so are you.

STORY is big play KOTOR i want story i want starwars Op don't play it if you don't want it
Naw, it was heading down hill back in 2004 after crap loads of people left shortly after publish 10.
I've played every Star Wars game going in knowing there would be a good backstory and character development involved, I would expect nothing less from this game.

What I like about this game is the story, But if this game hasn't got a story I wouldn't bother at all.
