I've tried the past week fews in beta to like this game, but it's just not happening. Here's why:
-the graphics are too "cutesy." Everything has a soft glow to it, from the login screen to the actual environments. Even the Asmodean (sp?) lands feel too Hello Kitty-ish. -the mobs are also "cutesy." Wheres the menace? Killing cute little bunny-bear hybrids isn't very viscerally exciting. -the combat animations are apocalyptic. My dagger hits a mob and things EXPLODE! Wow, what happen when I'm level 20 and I hit a mob with my dagger? The nearby village detonates? -the sounds effects are "cutsey." When you click on damn near anything, you hear a little "twinkle" effect. From NPC givers to loot, I constantly hear Mario gathering stars. (Oh, not to mention the choral music in the beginning which is simply dreadful and music I think I heard 10 years ago in a Final Fantasy game). -the battle/combat sounds are hilariously bad. Every time my female scout take damage, I hear a 5 yr old child scrape her knee. Again, where's the grit, the menace, where's the fact that I'M FIGHTING, not picking flowers?
Sorry, but these are all deal-breakers. You can add a good story onto this (which btw, I didn't see), you can add flying onto this (nothing new here, AO let you do this, what, almost 10 years ago?), you can add PvP on top of this (what, to hear LOTS of 5 yr old girls scraping their knees)...but the game will still look and sound the same. There is almost NOTHING I liked about UO, EQ, DAOC, AO, AC, WoW,, you name it, there is almost NOTHING aesthetically in common in Aion with those great games of the past No thanks, Aion, I outgrew Link and Mario and Princess Peach's cuteness 20 years ago.
Congrats to you man, you played a game you hate for 50 levels. Just a personal question from me to you : are you a masochist? I am only in my early 40ies. I just love combat dynamics, the character progression and the rvr with the 3rd party AI race, the fortresses... the things like the taxes your guild can raise on its territory and the other privileges remind me of L2. What is it you hate so much?
Let me see if I understand this...
If I don't play the game enough, I don't have a right to state a negative opinion about the game's quality.
If I play the ENTIRE game and state that I hate it, I'm called a masochist. Lovely.
The combat dynamics and class variety is a step backward from what I've come to expect. There is a tired grind attached to everything you must do that is class related. It's as if they are punishing experimentation. I'd elaborate further, but it's really fruitless. Enjoy your game, that's perfectly fine; just don't try to hoodwink people into believing this is going to be the next big and great game. It wont be.
Okay then....I leveled both sides to level 10 and completed the ascension quest. I also did every side quest
So, you are completely missing the core of the game and what it is about.
I don't know about you, but I always research a game before I try it out to see if it is something I would like or not.
In the case of Aion, for me it was:
- meaningful rvr/pvpve with battles for fortress ownership - check
- 3rd AI played race that comes on its own, or to help you or help the enemy crush you to balance the rvr - check
- fast paced and dynamic asian combat style - check
- deep crafting - check
And then the secondary things like:
- good graphics - check
- housing planned and coming later (I'm not in a hurry) - check
... and then the stuff like pve, flight, etc...

If the game's core is what I am looking for I don't care about the couple hours I have to spend in the "starter island" to learn how to play the thing.
What I am interested in is: is this game what I am looking for? yes or no? ... yes? so who cares about a couple hours or 2-3 days at most.
I am playing a game for several months. Why should I care about a couple hours or days?

Ah, at level 10 you are in the "starter island" an you already know the game has no substance. Good.
For me, this game has much more substance than most pve quest grinding games. There is meaningful rvr / pvpve with substance, implemented in a way WAR failed to do.

I don't get your reason to use a strong word like "hate" unless its mostly to persude other people to not play it, regardless how understanding you make yourself sound. To say that you played to 50 and hated it all the way to endgame, is hard to believe. If you are going to try to be persuasive, try a less agressive and open minded approach. As for thinking people are saying Aion is innovating...well there isn't anybody saying that. What I find different about Aion from other mmos is that the game doesn't feel like a beta while retail that a majority of other mmos have, ridden with bugs, messy stability, and host of other problems that mmorpg players seem to have to expect of a newly realeased mmo.
If I don't play the game enough, I don't have a right to state a negative opinion about the game's quality.

Haha, no I just wanted to know if you had experienced the core of the game (rvr, fortress ownership, etc..) or not.
If you would tell me you are in your later 20ies it would be enough.

Good, you are talking about personal tastes. You like apples, I like oranges; it will probably be the same with most of the things in this world (irl).

It already is.
FYI, the western world has only 1 game: WOW and its 11M players. The other western games with their 10k to 300k players mean nothing. Lol, even the western players don't play them.
As for Aion, it already has 3.5+M players in 2 countries only, and growing. Japan is in beta as much as we are.
I am glad the game has substance for you and that you have the patience to wait until level whatever to see it, I am not. I have been burnt by games before - games like Age of Conan that promised things at later levels and failed to deliver.
The differences with AoC are:
1. Aion has already been live for 7-8 months, many of us have played it.
2. NCsoft is not lying about the game like Funcom. NCsoft dropped the NDA 3 months before launch for us.

Im tired of playing ring around the rosie with your spin machine. Every post you make is chock full of inheherent fallacies, and this one is no exception. I'll say simply this; It'll be funny once you eat your words.

Nice, another groundless post of yours. What are these fallacies in every of my posts you are talking about?
While you are making some empty posts like this one, all of my posts are founded with personal opinions, information, factual numbers, etc...
You see, now you are getting frustrated and you can't accept that someone has some different tastes than yours.
You don't like a game, as I said above that's fine. Doesn't mean everyone should hate it as you do.
edit: and talking about fallacies, you seem to be the king. Because as another poster said above, I also find it strange that you played a game you hate until level 50.
I'm not going to call no names, but I just noticed from a lot of people that when you don't like something (or the game) and you comment on it and then I do some research and find what YOU LIKE and just catch you in the act of being a hypocrite. I'm not going to call no names, but yeah. Some of you really have too high expectations when you start a video game and that includes an MMO. NO matter what mmo you play your always going to see something, pretty, cool, or cute. Badass always come later. You don't see badass first when you pick up Pokemon, Oblivion, Morrowind, Final Fantasy, and even some mmorpgs. This is what you call beating a dead horse right?
There is almost NOTHING I liked about UO, EQ, DAOC, AO, AC, WoW,, you name it, there is almost NOTHING aesthetically in common in Aion with those great games of the past

In the land of Predators, the lion does not fear the jackals...
Maybe he was waiting for it to get less boring and good? I mean if levels 1-10 suck so bad and everyone should wait for it to get better (as it does by your own admission), maybe Nightblade was waiting for those promises to come true. As he said before, you criticize players for not playing and talking about the game; and now you criticize him for playing too much. So how much should we all play exactly before we may comment?
Just take a look at 2 or 3 posts above, I have already answered this question.
What I wanted to know is if we are talking about the game (the core of the game) or the "starter island".
If you get to the mid-later 20ies (2-3 days), with your guild you can already see and experience the core of the game (rvr). If it sucks for you at this point of course you will leave.
But then, this is only if you want to talk about the game play as you do. Because the first levels are not the core of the game.
Furthermore, there is the matter of opinions. As I told you, you don't even really need to play the game at all. Just look at the features list, at the videos on the web showing the core of the game, at the lore and the art direction and you will have more than enough indications on whether the game is for you or not.
Of course, if you want to complain about a game you better have played and experience the core of that game before.
As it is today, I don't really see any other rvr game that 1. works and 2. has meaningful battles for something worth fighting for (well, perhaps daoc, but this one is too old now).
That said, you say you are not prepared to spend anymore time to see more of the game. I would say it's your loss, but it's your opinion and its all good. If you don't really see anything attractive why should you play it?
Apparantly the OP believes so anyway, so cool story.
Seriously though, where do people get off stating purely personal dislikes as facts of what something is good/bad? In what magical fairy land world do you live in that you can do that? I'd like to buy a summer home there.

Templarga, just don't waste your energy. Simple logic seems to escape him. For every contradiction he calls you out on, he just replies with canned phrase, a notable rotation of these phrases that have little to no facts behind them.
People are so desperate for a WoW competitor to arise, that something that should be an industry standard (functional combat) is widely praised, and people like this emerge. Groundless? I just took a very simple stab at your double standard that you conveniently ignored. The only answers you supply are nonsensical ones. I'll refrain from using the overused lingo, suffice to say that I am convinced that no amount of actual facts will get you to admit you were wrong about anything.
Facts? What facts have you been providing for this debate? The skewed subscription numbers?
Enough already, just tell people what the game is like. Aion isnt "several steps ahead" it's not "innovative" and whatever your personal opinion of the ridiculous lore is, the game is grind filled right down to the Lineage 2 power shards, however less effective they may be in this game.
I think its his own taste hes talking about. I dont like all the weird dancing in this game its just too much but it wont stop me from liking the game.
He posted about the animations when you hit things I think its esential for there to be a spark cause Aion is a intense game
and adds emotion to the PvP and I dont think its over done I mean cimpair it to free to play asian mmos , theres a balance here.

Skewed subscription numbers? You can stop trolling right now, will you. Wow has 11M players and Aion has 3.5+M, everyone knows this and this is posted everywhere around the web.
You just don't want to accept this as you don't want to accept that someone doesn't have the same opinion as you do. Pretty sad imho.
And again one more groundless post of yours. Or do you want to talk to me more about the single fact you have given us, namely how you played a game you hate until level 50?
You see, 11M people play wow. I don't like wow. Doesn't make it a bad game. It's just a great game that isn't my style.
But you don't a like a game, so for you the people who do are wrong. Open your eyes man, you are not alone in this world.
My mistake, I should have been more specific. None of us have played the US/EU version of Aion, well, apart from these open beta previews.
On another note, and irrelevant to the comment above, everyone is entitled to their opinion on whether the game is good or bad for them. It's just that some people on both sides of the fence forget about it, frequently.
Skewed subscription numbers? You can stop trolling right now, will you. Wow has 11M players and Aion has 3.5+M, everyone knows this and this is posted everywhere around the web.
If you believe these numbers are actually current and accurate... I really just can't help you here.

I don't care about what your opinion is, I'm tired of seeing all of this moronic hype surrounding something that just isn't what people are saying it is. There is no excuse for this conduct; the game has been out overseas for some time, why are you people hyping this up so much? We have fans here shouting about things the game just doesn't do. Stop trying to put words in my mouth.
I don't know, how many times do I have to say this before it sinks in? Here, have a few more.
I don't care about what your opinion is, I'm tired of seeing all of this moronic hype surrounding something that just isn't

namely how you played a game you hate until level 50?
"single fact" I noticed you threw that in there. Cute. Well let's see; people kept insisting it got better, I stuck around, it didn't. If you don't play enough, you "DIDNT GIVE IT A FAIR CHANCE". If you play all the way through "WHY DID YOU PLAY SOMETHING YOU HATE SO LONG?!".
I would agree that a game can feel less appealing early on or later on. Some players are giving games the benefit of a doubt and keep on playing a bit higher in levels, although they don't enjoy the experience. I personally think that when somebody makes up his mind about not liking a game, little else matters. Same of course with liking the game and being enthusiastic about it.
I do believe that this topic has a wrong title. I am not convinced by the OP that Aion is a bad game. I am however convinced that it is not the game for him.

Here, have a few more.

namely how you played a game you hate until level 50?
"single fact" I noticed you threw that in there. Cute. Well let's see; people kept insisting it got better, I stuck around, it didn't. If you don't play enough, you "DIDNT GIVE IT A FAIR CHANCE". If you play all the way through "WHY DID YOU PLAY SOMETHING YOU HATE SO LONG?!".
Come on, even you can see how ridiculous this is.
