There's my dealbreaker. So much for Aion. The one thing I hate more than anything in an MMO is zoning. Hate it with a passion. Give me a coast to coast open world. If developers are so keen to copy WoW, as many people here suggest, then why can't an open world be the one thing they take?

    Next game....

As for what templarga said - I'm not sure he's gotten to the Abyss, where you can fly nearly anywhere.  And in the normal zones, you can only fly short distances, but there are still amazing places to go - and even places you're apparently not supposed to be.

If you're seriously thinking about trying it, check out aionsource.com and ask questions there.  There are people that have played the game there.

The zones are restricted and linear. There is also 1 zone per level range per race. It's not like WoW where you usually have 2 or more zones to go to as you're leveling. In Aion as a level 1-10 Asmodian, you're in Ishalgen and after level 10 you go to Pandemonium for a bit, then move on to Altgard...always.And so on and so forth.

Yes, you can fly indefinitely in the Abyss but Abyss is only one part of the game. A part that only becomes fully accessible at higher levels.

Aion is WoW with better gfx and an excellent PvP

far from original, yet recipe for succeed. Its only con is its origin (asian) that is a huge barrier for the close minded...understandable however, because before playing it i was also one of those that tot asian games are synonym of no endgame + unbearable grind

Aion wont represent any noticiable innovation to the genre as a whole, yet its a welcome release since for the firts time in...what? 3 years?...west will put their hands on a game that isnt in a pathetic/not-release-worthy status.

People might like it or not, but that will be on basis of its features, not because of half-baked concepts,half-working mechanics and bugs galore

    QFT.

I agree that Aion and WoW have a lot of similarities, but they are both MMOs, after all.  Aion is certainly easier for me to look at - WoW's art direction makes my eyes bleed.

And it's fun in a way that WAR and AoC just aren't, IMO.

To each their own, I suppose.

I'm just watching from the sidelines and reading news as I stumble upon it. Zones vs. Seamless World is a personal preference. If the game is the second coming of the great prophet Zarkwon in all other respects but still has zoning, I won't play it. It's my choice. You are certainly free to play whatever game you like, and you know what? I won't judge you. Seriously. All I ask is a little of the same courtesy.

Prediction: Lots of hype and positive vibe before the release. Followed by a host of negative feedback 2-4 weeks after the release when people actually realize how shallow the gameplay really is when they are no longer fooled by the eye candy.

That said. I think it will provide a breath of fresh air to those who are increasingly bored with their current games. Some no doubt will find a new home with Aion. It is not going to be a bad game, nor will it be that amazing.

Aion's gameplay is point by point exactly the same as WoW's, except for the addiction of viable PvP/RvR, something where WoW has been failing hard during 5 years and has showed no trace of improving

Aion is like if WoW were given new better gfx and all of a sudden its PvP didnt suck donkey ass

Actually its not really similar to WoW after first 25 levels. You do know that apparently most Aion players quit between 25-30 levels?

Things I have heard so far that make people quit:

    - You level very slow in this game.

    - There are not enough quests so you are forced to grind mobs.

    - There is no variety in zones where to grind / level.

Here is a pretty good review that balances on both postives and negatives:

    http://forum.mmosite.com/topics/245/200906/22/799,1.html

Note: There seems to be some conflicting information about the number of quests. It seems there is no a lot  more they started with, but I rather wait for release and see how it really is. The review I linked is fairly recent and yet there seems to be some people who claim that you can reach level 50 "easily" wihtout stepping in to Abyss.

Any game that makes you wait before you start having fun is suffering from bad design. That's one thing that a lot of WoW clones fail to clone.

As for having access to the Abyss at level 25, yes you do have access. However, good luck trying to be viable in PvP with all the max level gank squads running/flying about.

Well, here is a graph to illustrate the amount of grinding required. It seems that groupping up and grinding mobs will be most efficient due to XP you get from some harder elite mobs.  Apparently added quests in 1.2. patch affects mainly 20-40 levels, but not still enough to remove the need for grinding.

    Aion is Aion.

It's a game to stand and be judged on its own.  Everything's not an expansion pack to WoW just because it's within the same genre.  It's an MMO.  You play it and either like it or not.

You always compare games towards each other. For example there is no denying that both Aion & WoW lack collision detection. This means that both games most likely have similiar aggro mechanisms for pve simply because mobs can pass through players to get to other players(they do). No collision detect means that you can not make a wall of bodies in pvp to protect your healers. So therefore, healers must be able to with stand several attackers. Both games also have flight but have flight restricted zones.

Now, I do agree that the focus of each game is very different. WoW is a pve game with some pvp added. Aion is a more pvp focused game that also includes some pve elements.

Aion is much better than wow, and if you're a pvp player its paradise. wow is for pve'ers and aion is for pvp'ers. Raid rage nerds might be disappointed with aion, everyone else will love it.

From what I see it will surely be a solid game. But it also looks kinda limited. Linear world, standard quests, standard combat system, only 2 races. It is solid, but nothing groundbreaking.

But then, WOW proved that most people have a very mediocre taste. McDonalds ftw, it seems. :/

Sorry but the truth is you will never see any mmorpg that will be groundbreaking. Story, quests, and combat that is an rpg and it can not be changed.

Both WoW and Aion greatly exaggerate characterlooks, armour and weapons. This is standard to begin with in most MMOs, but Aion and WoW are worse then average in this aspect. Aion just uses the typical anime style, where WoW looks more like a Disney cartoon.  I really dont like over the top proportions on characters and over the top flashy effects. You can hardly call this look like reality.

Although I really like the anime style in certain movies, I hate it in games that have a Lineage 2 style look.

Aion probably will be a good game, like most NCSoft games. Just not my cup of tea after reading about it.

Oh, I also think that the flying is just a cheap selling feature. Similar to pirates, zombies, ninjas, dual wielding etc. Nothing more then a gimmick.
