What makes EVE a sandbox?

You should judge whether or not a game is a sandbox by using the "game" that defines sandbox: SecondLife.

Eve is no sandbox. A good game, yes, but no sandbox.

Funny every RPG sim I tried was full of nastiness... And it wasn't close to a 'game'. They have no control over these sims. So you see people walking around in pants in a medieval sim

The makers stated lots of times when they made SL ithey didnt build it as a gaming platform and you can clearly see this after visiting a few sims that all overrun with porn

If i wanted that shit I'd get it in RL. I play real games like EVE for fun not for that crap in SL

You care to elaborate why EVE is no sandbox and SL is?

lol .... you are not ..... arguing the fact ..... that more ships > less ships ...... I have a couple stories to tell you of how many times i've went up against larger numbers and came out on top. If the gangs i did face had EWAR it would have been a completely different story and a good hit to my wallet.

    Sure.

SL is a sandbox by the simple fact that EVERYTHING is user created. Linden Labs provides the client tools, but it is up to the user to create everything for their sim, right down to terraforming the land. And not only can you create anything you can imagine, every object created in SL can be scripted. The API is extremely robust and tha language is so simple to learn that non-programmers can be really successful at it. Not onlt can you create whatever you wish, you can pretty much make it behave in any way you wish.

Same thing goes for character creation. A "avatar" is made up of hair, eyes, shape, and skin and can be adorned with layers; shirt, pants, jacket, socks, skirt, underpants, undershirt. You can use these layers for much more then

    Sorry for trolling.

that was not trolling -it was a fair question. In EVE I had a miner who trained up and became a fighter.  Most, not all, themepark games do not let you do things like that - A druid is a druid and a fighter is a fighter.  There are some themepark games that let you cross train to some extent - I believe DDO did that.

I liked the chart shown in a previous post that listed games on a scale of how themepark/sandbox they were - few games are at the extremes of said scale.

Well, a druid can be a tank, damage dealer and healer - that is why I mentioned these classes. :)

I didn´t mean the different ships or skills though. I believe, my toon in EVE is one of the biggest "gimps", because of learning skills into many different directions - as some one said "wanna test it all".

What I don´t like in DAoC and what I don´t like in EVE, is the heavy use of multiple accounts.

In DAoC because of "buffbots", because they strengthened the main avatar insanely,

in EVE because they turn the sandbox feeling into a class based game.

"but I spent zero money for it"

Nice, some sell their toons or equipment at Ebay, some... ok, it is the fault of CCP.

a druid can tank or whatever but cannot learn the skills of a tank class(in most themepark games).. a miner in eve can learn fighter skills.  I never said a druid could not tank - I said for the most part he cannot learn "tank" skills.  When you have classes the skills are usually restricted to those of your class. This is not true in EVE. I am not saying that a miner who later trains fighter skills in EVE is as good as a pure fighter but one can train skills outside of one's expertise - there are no true classes in EVE - only directions of expertise.

Also - if you do not like EVE don't play it, but do not say it is not a good game because you do not like it. I hate WoW but I never say it is a bad game.  I just don't like it - it seems infantile to me, but that is my opinion, others love it.

OK one question why is a sandbox game not fun? Or why do people knock sandbox games? I like most games that are close to, or are sandbox games. I have played EVE "if its a sandbox game" its a fun game. I have played GTA all of them they are all fun. I played SWG before and after Sony messed everything up. I would like more open ended games "sandbox games". I like the games that start you off in a area and say go. You have to fig out your own path. Allot of mmo give that effect of an open world"sandbox" but they have you on a path that they want you to go on. The sandbox game give you a sense that you get to do what you want when you want.

Mainly because EVERYTHING is user created.

Aside from the sims which start out as a flat piece of land, the physics engine that determines how objects behave (Havok 4), day/night cyclse with variable wind speed/direction, everything else must be created by someone, including the hair, eyes, shape, and skin of your avatar.

Can you create a pink ship with green stripes that looks like a sausage in Eve? No. I can in SL

Can you create your avatar by mapping a photo of youself to a UV plane and importing it into the game and skinning your avatar with it in Eve? No. I can in SL.

Can you create walks, runs, jumps, etc. in Poser, import them and make your avatar move however you want in Eve? No. I can in SL.

Can you create any weapon/armor your imagination can devise, script it to behave a certain way in Eve? No. I can in SL.

I'd recommend looking at secondlife.com/whatis/creations.php for more information about what it possible.

Just because a game is classless/ leveless doesn't make it a sandbox. Eve is very limited about what you can do to personalize your experience. You can't look like whatever you want, build any ship/weapon/station you want. or modify the universe any way you want. Eve has a static environment with a finite amount of objects to work with, like any other game. I'm sorry, but that is NOT freedom (nor a sandbox). However, Eve has more freedom in its mechanics than many other games, that I'll agree with.

Sandbox implies building from the ground up. Not possible in Eve, or any other MMO out today, for that matter.

I think of games like Eve as "freeform". That term makes more sense.

SL is no sandbox at all, it is a themepark in fact. Just instead of having a set of attractions given by devs you can create your owns.

You are mistaken here customizeability for sandbox.

Would EVE be more sandbox if we could paint our ships and had more customizeable content? No, it would not.

EVE is more sandbox than SL because of game mechanics.
In EVE, every character interacting with a game content is affecting game economy. This is where sandbox comes from - the interaction and dependencies on other players.

In EVE you need other players.
On the contrary, in SL you need nothing. You need no job, you need no money, you need no resources, you need not to produce anything - you just socialize.

SL is nothing more than 3D Facebook with extended dress ups. It is a sort of interface, having nothing to do with sandbox game.

    Edit: Typos

outnumbered? no i was ewar'd. Simple as that, i could have chewed through a bunch of cruisers if i could just lock on to it without being perma jaqmmed, had nothing to do with numbers

They could have been in a couple of Vegabonds and you will still have died without being perma jammed.  it's still the cruiser hull but without ewar.  You lost because you were out numbered.  Plan and simple.

well in that case it could have been a titan...whats your point? (yes i have been dd'd by a titan lol)

A titan is not on a cruiser hull, thus the comparison is void.  However, Vegabons are cruiser hull which makes the comparison to recons all that more significant.

Too bad Second Life is not a game to begin with so that long novel is a waste of typing. Come back when it becomes a true MMORPG. Linkrealms beats the crap out of SL anyway. Come back when you have more experience with real MMOs. If you knew your MMOs, you would've said UO or Linkrealms.
