Yes, if this works out its a huge boost to the game... but people should really try to not get overly excited about this without seeing it in action. You might set yourselves up for a huge disappointment.
If Darkfall survives the year, with these changes and hopefully more to come this game maybe a decent product. I look forward to reading the reviews of the free expansion.
As a side note I think it's funny that CCP could release a free xpac for Eve that's basically just a big patch but when AV does it its a scam and the games dead lol.
I love Eve don;t get me wrong but I think the DF haters on these forums are a bit off thier rockers.
problem is that these were PROMISED features that would be included at launch with a "Feature Complete" game
Well Tasos (might have spelled that wrong) is an idiot.
No way in hell is an indy developer trying to create a 3d UO going to be feature complete with limited funds, hell these bastards can't afford a website redesign or more than one server or a proper billing service.
So personally I didn't put too much into that "feature complete" PR shit that Tasos was spouting.
PR/Hype is the devil, anyone who has been playing MMOs as long as us knows not to believe anything those bastards say.
Hell, Atleast they aren't charging for the Xpac lol!
So now that player housing has been announced, the question must surely be: Darkfall fans - is player housing still for carebears and obviously would kill PVP if implemented?
Well as a DF fan I can not say for sure becuase player housing in of itself wouldnt affect PVP one way or the other, it completely depends on the details. Will this player housing cause more pvp? I dont know, best wait and find out I think.
Do I care about player housing one way or the other? For the most part no, but again, it depends on the details
Cool, I think that's the best way to look at it, see what happens.
Xpiher however seems to think that it's a done deal and this patch will sort everything out.
To paraphrase you Sean, I'm confused, which view is correct?
I'm over my intial hype. Now its a wait and see game.
LOL!
I think the same thing is starting to sink in on the official boards.
At first almost everyone was really excited about the Update notes.
Then they remembered that with Aventurine the Devil is always in the details. Aventurine doesn't do details in their notes. Many of the items listed in the notes will depend greatly on the details on how they are implemented.
Those dang details are the part that Aventurine has struggled with from the get-go.
Who knows... perhaps this time they will get them right. Past performance doesn't provide a lot of optimism though.
Well, it shows AV is still alive and kicking, and can pay the bills enough to keep releasing more new features. Along with the NA server annoucment, at least they are making a go of it and we'll see if it all pays off in the long run.
Is it they are still alive and kicking or is it a last ditch effort to stay a float?
Now I think these are nice additions they are implementing, even if a little to late. I just hope for the players still playing that it is enough to repopulate the game. I have my doubts, but like you say "they are making a go of it". So we will see what happens
Well Tasos (might have spelled that wrong) is an idiot. I perfer that developers dont make any promises at all and do not hold themselves accountable to it.
Why? just because it sounded like a good idea to the devs and the gamers at the time doesnt mean its always a good idea. I perfer trying to find out the best idea REGARDLESS of what was said before.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
Did they mention it's 20 euro's to get the expansion?
It's a free expansion, have you read any of the news o.o
As a Darkfall fan, the problem I have with this game is the PVE difficulty and rewards which should be fixed if the patch is implemented correctly. The other features that "should have been in release" are a big bonus, give AV a rest, there are former trolls on the official forums that are excited about the expansion and many people who have quit are thinking of resubbing. Let's stop being so negative and be more optimistic about what AV is doing. These are long awaited features and I am just glad that they are about to come tomorrow.
Without sounding overly defensive, I'd just like to comment on the "this isn't an expansion, just a big patch":
I don't see why they wouldn't call it an expansion. Adding a new land mass and making some new raid instances for WoW, from pre-existing knowledge doesn't qualify any better. I'm not saying Darkfall's expansion is bigger or better than WoW's (just an example here) are, but the fact that it's free makes a big factor.
Player housing, weather system, this new village system and much more, regardless of the fact that some of it was promised for launch (they did say player housing was cut before release though), is expansion content for sure.

This expansion sounds really cool if they can pull it off. The player housing and village system should be awesome. I haven't played yet but it looks like they're rounding the game out quite well, could be worth a look soon.

That is pretty much standard for all MMOs.
They are always a work in progress. Developers will change things in a heart-beat if they notice that players are leaving in droves and the exit surveys have a lot of common points to them.
This is really obvious with DarkFall's most recent update notes.
"The adjustments in PvE, Weapons, Armor, and crafting are the results of months of observations, feedback, experimentation and testing. Even so, we'll keep watching very closely and making any further adjustments needed. "
No secret sauce there. When players are leaving in droves because they say the PvE is really crappy... you'd better fix it.
Granted it's probably a bit humiliating for those that made the case that DarkFall was a PvP game and didn't need PvE... but those fans seem to be in much smaller numbers now-a-days.
DarkFall is unique in that they are the only MMO that has Tasos. Now some other MMOs had talking-heads that came close to Tasos... but I'd have to give him the top honors for the most clueless Dev. of any MMO.
You will have to realize that all this is pretty common stuff for MMOs. You'll catch on eventually.

You are entitled to your opinion, but to expand on this idea of it being more like a patch than an expansion, this would seem to come from the fact that you are getting very little "new" content, but instead finally getting content that was promised from the get go (bear in mind, this is only from looking at this at a glance and not an indepth review of said features).
With the WoW example you used, the expansions generally offer something new (be it innovative/exciting or not).
That being said, I am not here to argue semantics (tomato vs "tomatoe" and all that jazz), just adding in some ideas to that train of thought. Consequently, I do see it as a patch, and feel AV should be more honest with themselves, BUT I do feel it is a major step in the right direction if it can be implemented in a workable manner.
All in all, I still won't touch this game, but I do hope it goes well for all of the players (and please in no way mistake this post as a wish of ill will for the game for any criticism of AV, if you take it as such, learn to read and comprehend please).

Just as an F.Y.I.
LOTRO added in player housing in a free update as well.
I do like the that Aventurine is giving this update for free though. So for that they should be commended.
A good majority of that is done tongue-in-cheek though. Mainly to get under the skin of the ultra-loyal fans. You'll have to admit it does work quite well.
and I would think that would define trolling.

Ahh nope.
Trolling doesn't care about good discussion.
Getting into a good back and forth discussion is all about getting one side or the other to bring their A-game and really try and persuade the other side on the merits of their opinions.
THAT is what I was referencing.
I will admit it is a fine line. But that is where a bit of experience in forum banter comes into play.
Edit: As you should know... this is another form of entertainment for many. Take most of what you read on any forum with a grain of salt. There is nothing ever said on an internet forum to lose any sleep over. ESPECIALLY on a gaming forum.
Cool, I think that's the best way to look at it, see what happens. Xpiher however seems to think that it's a done deal and this patch will sort everything out. To paraphrase you Sean, I'm confused, which view is correct?
I think speculating on the effects of a "____" that hasn’t been tried by anyone yet is naïve and shows inexperience to be honest!
I agree 100% - that kind of fan does no game any favours.
I do like the look of the village ideas, very promising in my humble opinion!
Indeed nobody have tested it yet im hoping for best it looks promising but will see tommorow:)
Still some serious problems not fix or not in this patch tho:(
But darkfall get more depth now and also dynamic treasure chest spawns with rare drops seems nice addition.
Weather will give a more immersive playing world:)
Players house more pvp spots more life around agon instead of huge desolated areas.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
No mention of a fix to wall mob exploiting, NA1 will fall to the same fate as EU1. The expansion still looks pretty promising, although they've still proven that they don't care about exploiters and that you should exploit all you want because nothing will be done even if you're caught.

Because an EXPANSION is something that extends the gaming landmass or surface... with added content.
If you don't add land, then it's not expanding anything, it's just a game update or patch. Tasos thinks because it tied to opening a NA server, they are expanding the game... lol
It's just him playing word games. Everquest, DAOC, Vanguard, etc.. all have had major patches with incredibly way more content and changes... none of those were expansions.
This is just Darkfall's first major update... and Tasos being so QQ, had to name it "expansion" because he knows what a real expansion is and the headlines will get peoples attention. The guy should be tared & feathered and paraded around like the crook he is. Tasos Flambouras is a rotten, low down parasite. He has no honor or even respct for his family name.
"No they are not charity. That is where the whales come in. (I play for free. Whales pays.) Devs get a business. That is how it works."

It makes a difference in how the free advertising uses it.

I predict that the next couple weeks will expose that to be the case once again.
I would just like to point out 1 of the may definitions of the word "expansion".
- an increase in economic and industrial activity
By adding in housing alone this adds to economic activity. I guess you could go as far to say it adds to industrial activity to with workbenches in the houses.
But really, who cares what they call it. You are getting more content.
