Swimming implemented in 1.5 patch?

MargulisMargulis Member CommonPosts: 1,614

Title of thread says it all really, anyone know if they have added swimming by 1.5?  Seems this is a pretty basic staple of any game but for some reason in Aion you just run around submerged at the bottom of whatever lake or stream you are in until you die.

There is really no reason for swimming.  Water in Aion is just another way to define a boundary line rather than be surrounded by mountains all the time.

    It's a Jeep thing. . .

There IS need for swimming. Even free mmorpgs allow you to swim (not dive though)

You can fly, walk and run. But you can't swim.  As the other guy say,  water is a elegant way that aion use to limit the playable areas.

It bothers me because it feels/looks wrong. The attention to detail is amazing in most parts of the game. It is strange they would leave something as simple as a swimming animation out :-/

No, stick with flying, deep waters are boundaries, pretty much like some MMOs, better thah the invisible walls of doom and the mountain walls of perfect obstruction that challenge even those that could get up to Everest / K2 and other mountains summits.

There are those who do not know how to swim, it seems people in both Elysea and Asmodae were too busy flying to care about swimming, and it makes sense.

The reason for swimming is to take away from how horribly unrealistic it is to just trudge your way through at the bottom of water.  If they want a boundary they can use the invisible boundaries many other mmos use.

It's a matter of opinion, really. I prefer deep waters than invisible walls as what limits my exploration. Invisible walls break immersion as much or even more than drowning in deep waters.

It would feel better if they added swimming animations though (or struggling to stay floating), even if you get a message "you don't know how to swim, get back!" while taking damage.

So people think that no swimming is a way to enforce a boundary?  Come on.  There are water areas already that are not boundaries at all so you shouldn't be able to swim in those either?  and limited flying is the reason we should be satisfied and not be so greedy to want to be able to swim?  That's ridiculous.

Which sounds like wasted development time to me.  Water leads to nothing the entire game, why should they waste time adding in swimming animations to go nowhere?

You can swim with further expansions. For now you have to be content with flying :)

What about flying in space? Screw the pressure and lack of oxygen, it's a fantasy game.

when u fall into deep water, u lose health while running . We could lose that same health while swimming anyway.

This way, they keep the objective of boundarys and correct a ugly feature, running in the deep water.

Agreed i think there should be swimming in all mmorpg's.

I thought it was pretty funny when I drowned last week.  I even tried flying out of the water, but you've got to be on dry land to expand your wings.

Swimming and a breath bar are nessessary. there is an asmodian quest that sends you to a pirate ship, and if you fall in the water you cant swim, and then you dont see your breath and you drown before you know it.

It just seems sloppy not to have those things.

this is a very good example of why it SHOULD be added +1

but the game still looks very pretty and the beta is damn good fun!

I was dumb struck the first time i tried to swim in this game, its the most immersion breaking retarded thing about the game i just cant get over the fact you cant swim , and the flying is really limitied so dont give us this shite about you can fly why swim , thats such a fanboi thing to say. The game clearly needs to get swiming sorted out before it launces here. It is the one thing every single person i have spoken to about the game has said , why the hell do i sink to the botton of the sea, you dont even sink actually you just fall !

When i was out questing i seen some ship in like a watery place , it wassome transporter dock in the 10-20 area for asmodians i glided down into the water where i would have died if i didnt heal my ass every step of the way to get to the land, and then i had to run around to try find my way out because i couldnt just swim down the river and get out that way i had "wall climb" the border of the zone to get out.

They may add it later if they add water zones, but who knows.  Doesn't bother me at all, but I understand how it bothers some people.

  • TeimanTeiman Member Posts: 1,319

    I agree it feel retarded.

But I disagree that it is.   If you have 80 KG of full plate armor, make sense that you are forced to walk in the bottom :-)

In games like DDO, you have to remove your armor to swim.

Humm... yea, is retarded. Hope is added in future patchs. I will love to see how this characters swim. Specially the womens yummm...

Aion not having swimming is just a stupid decision, and is lazy on the part of NCSoft.  You appear to be willing to make excuses for the game because you like it.

I've seen the excuse about it being a boundary system.  The lack of swimming is a more ridiculous boundary mechanism than invisible walls, in my opinion, and makes the game look a little half-baked.

Additionally, there appears to be more than a few "no fly zones" in the game - more "invisible wall" boundaries.  Flying seems to have it's own unexplainable boundaries that subtract from the gaming experience.  These things do contribute to making the game feel linear in nature.

    1. Going through deep water that will kill you generally takes you no where special (found one spot so far it's a short cut but you can go through it with enough time that it doesn't kill you).

    2. How many of you have ever tried to swim in full armor/weapons plus lugging around 1-3 packs?

    3. It's trifle at best and really not needed.

  • partynikkopartynikko Member Posts: 55

Omg I can't seriously believe so many people don't mind. It doesn't make sense, HOW CAN YOU WALK ON THE BUTTON OF THE SEA? Let alone die after walking out 2m.

I hope it gets implanted. It's beta anyway.

I don't mind that you can die while swimming too far off the shore, but actually NOT being able to swim is dissapointing. I mean WARs no-dive rule was hard to get used to at first, but it was ok after a week or so.
