I'm curious to see it. Who know maybe it will be great! Just like Lord of the Rings. I think every fan/player will at least be curious bout it and go see it...
I love Sam Raimi's work when it comes to comedic horror BUT
This is something that's near and dear to many along the lines of just anyone taking Tolkien to the big screen. The Warcraft fan base I would imagine is most definitely willing to wait for a quality film.
This whole idea could be completely and utterly disasterous on so many levels. I know it would take near a lifetime to create, but I say leave the cinematics up to the same team for Blizzard that made the Lich King trailer.
Again LOVE miscellaneous Sam Raimi works, but this is one area where a petition should be sent to Blizzard begging to give the film some artistic justice so Sam Raimi doesn't end up being labeled as the next Uwe Boll. If they stick to the storylines that are already laid out the movie could be incredible. Give a director or studio freedoms of any sort and you're asking for disaster on this one.
(And yes the picture is Ted Raimi - Sam's brother - met him in Baltimore - great guy)
Blizzard are the talented bunch when it comes to writing and creating CGI movies, Blizzard should themselves produce spin off movies of their games, really, from Starcraft onwards, all of their games have amazing cinematics. Blizzard, do it yourself.
I have to say, I'm not a big fan of the live action WoW idea. WoW is more set for animation or CGI. I just don't see any studio dropping the dough needed to make the movie on the same artistic level as Lord of the Rings. I could see some producer push for cell shading like in A Scanner Darkly, but that would also be a horrible thought. I thought to myself months ago, that I would totally watch sets of 90min CGI films, that go direct to video.
i hope for those that go and watch the wow movie that its not as boring after 5 minutes as the wow gameplay =p. maybe theyll keep the movie pre burning crusade, back when the game was challenging and fun.
I think it'll be a good movie because, just like the game has appeal to a diverse cross-section of society (nerds to jocks play it), the movie will be marketed to the same crowd. The Spiderman movies were some of the highest grossing movies of all time (so Raimi clearly has it in him), LotR was groundbreaking, the Harry Potter movies have all been highly entertaining, very well done and true to the books. So why can't a WoW movie be good, you Chicken Littles!
There have definitely been some horrid movies based on video games, but Blizzard can front a lot of cash for a decent budget and there are a lot of really awesome special effects on the horizon that seem like they will revolutionize the box office. I was reading an article the other day about some sort of 3D effects that James Cameron is using for his movie "Avatar" (not to be confused with the airbender one.) According to the article, several highly successful directors (including Peter Jackson), after being shown some sample footage from "Avatar", have vowed to do all their future movies in this technology. Stuff like that could really help to make the WoW movie a great success.
I like Raimi and all, but I'm personally tired of the video game/comic book/cartoon to movie trend. I suppose it could be ok, but remember these lovely titles: Super Mario Brothers Double Dragon Street Fighter Wing Comander Tomb Raider Alone in the Dark BloodRayne Max Payne Resident Evil (actually not too bad) In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (Burt Reynolds as the king?!!) Silent Hill Hitman
Don't forget Mortal Kombat lol
On topic:
I really don't know what to think. I can see myself watching it and think "awesome" but then rate it a 2/5 just to stay true to my image
Yeah Resident Evil was fun, and Silent Hill was pretty good too...I really liked the sound track to those and the Tomb Raider Movies as well ;-)
I think Blizzard are really trying to treat this project with respect since they anounced the idea of a movie in 2007 and they've still yet to write or cast it so their taking their time. Its set from an Aliance perspective before any of the games so it should be easier to make live action but I think this fact will dissapoint many fans. It will piss hordling's off and they'll be no undead or draenei which is bound to annoy die hard wow fans.
Oh and by the way, mega off topic but

I think it's gonna suck remember the dragon ball movie, that's where I'm thinking, I don't think they'll even be able to capture the essence of Warcraft, an animation would be much better...
I personally think it will be epic. I have read other articles where Blizzard execs have said that they have a huge budget set aside just for this. And...look at Blizzards trailers that they make for their games.
The story of the warcraft movie has been rumoured to be set around the time Thrall escapes from his captivity in the hillsbrad foothills and "reforms" the horde.
If you stand VERY still, and close your eyes, after a minute you can actually FEEL the universe revolving around PvP.
Also bear in mind they also have novels based on WoW, and I'm guessing that the Movie will based one those novels. So, if you've read any of those books, and you like them I'm guessing the movie might actually be pretty good. At least that's my thought.
A warcraft movie should not take place during the WoW lore in my opinion.. They should do a war of the ancients movie first, and then to Warcraft 1, 2 and 3, one for each game, following the lore directly.. Peter Jackson did a amazing job with Lord of the Rings Online.. I think they can do a good job on Warcraft.. Peter Jackson also did each Lord of the Rings movie on a 90 million budget, where every movie these days gets a 200 million budget.
A WOW Movie will be good if they use a side story from the game rather then what we already know and I would rather it be animated then using real people. Using real people would require a bigger budget to get a more real look but I don't know much about the costs. Just my opinion. :-) .Also I can imagine a movie theater full of cos-play individuals already. I am not sure I would want to be there for that but it may be an interesting scene. I am not much of a WOW fan anymore but I probably would rent it on dvd rather then pay in theater. Happy gaming. God bless.
I sense another Mario Brothers movie- type fiasco coming on...
I agree. Raimi's work has become progressively worse as the years have gone by. The Spiderman fiasco was bad enough, I have a feeling the Warcraft IP will suffer at the hands of Raimi.
This is all personal opinion though. I have a bunch of friends who actually think he is a great director and will do to WoW what Peter Jackson did to Lord of the Rings. There are a lot of kids waiting for this film, to make the film a success, it is enough that Raimi caters to them.
a spiderman 4 is suppose to be coming out on may 6th 2011 directed by sam raimi with tobey maguire as spiderman. This one the villian is suppose to either be the lizard or morbius the living vampire.
I can't wait to miss this in the theaters. Video game + movie = high percentage of suck.
Why bother typing this after knowing the fact in the back of your mind you will check it out? No one on the forums that read your message would never know. Grow up.
I personally think that this is full of win. Despite what YOU and YOUR ALL NEGATORY comments says.. this will be one of the biggest box offices ever.. You have no right to immediately become critics of a movie you yet have seen. It doesn't make sense. Why do you guys bother bitchin' already? It amazes me how wannabe gamers are like this.. WoW is one of the best things that have ever happened in the gaming industry -- I frankly don't care if it has gotten you bored, wasted your money, and/or how immature those people in the game are.. You represented a great deal of similitaries just talking like this. Fuckin' hypocrites.

I don't see how anyone can like the Spiderman films. Especially Spiderman 3.
I used to be such a huge fan of Warcraft until WoW came out. I can only hope the movie won't destroy anymore of my love.

I agree, WoW is definately more of an animation/cg type film, this is a theme that started in Warcraft1 and has carried through to WoW.

ever watch dungeons and dragons live action movie? i think it will be like that only 1 million times worse.

Also, because I didn't see it linked yet, here is the link to the press release www.blizzard.com/us/press/090721.html
Oh, also, Bruce Campbell cameo FTW.

I keep praying that this is some terrible late April Fools joke. And thats definitely Ted Raimi, Sams little brother, in that picture.
I can see Michael Clarke Duncan as a Tauren.

To each his own, but I liked the D&D movie
Sounds like something for torrenting...
