Now that I think about it, maybe I like the idea of the cash shop.  I have the extra money to buy what ever is needed to kick everyones butt in all the PvP scenarios.  And when you loose, all I have to say is that you should have played the game better.  I don't have to be good because I have money !!

And after the first few months when some of the player base leaves for other games, I'm sure the Dev's will make the cash shop stuff more desirable allowing me to buy even better stuff. After all they have to keep their profit flowing.

                                                                                                         Or

When I get higher in levels and I'm really hooked ( you know about the point of no return ). the cash shop will really have better stuff.  I'm sure levels 1-10 will have no need for the cash shop.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I'm a little older than most of you. I remember when bank ATM's were free to use.  Now people are paying $3 to withdraw $20.

    ATM's =  cash shops.

    Champions Online = cash shops.

Well, regardless of the RMT, I will be purchasing the game (already have it pre-ordered).  I have no problem with a game having an RMT, especially if its a game I enjoy.  After all, aren't we supposed to be playing these games for entertainment?

This is obviously an exaggeration, but you get the point.  Situations that are similar, though smaller in scale, occur in mmo's all the time.  Is it stupid?  Heck yeah.  But it still happens.  So when you let people acquire items with money, what you end up with is people feeling like they need to buy the objects to be able to do the fun things they want to do.  You don't have to, sure.  But I am willing to bet (and for that matter, so are the developers, or they wouldn't spend the time creating the cash shop) that you WILL, to save time.

Luckily I don't play with elitist gamers that won't group with me because I don't have X item.  EQ2 has had a cash shop for quite a while now and when I played with my friends there never once did any of them say "oh you don't have X, you need to buy it off the cash shop", or "You need to level faster, buy the XP potion from the cash shop".

My friends and I are not so arrogant to force each other to spend money in the cash shop or we won't play with one another.

As for your example, if that was a PUG the healer should have no problem finding another group to adventure with (probably full of nicer people than the first group anyway) while the group who rejected the healer will still be looking for one.

Sounds like it was their loss for being elitist pricks to me.

I'd also like to point out that this scenario would happen even if there was no cash shop but instead of telling the guy to buy it from the cash shop they would have just been told to F-off because they don't have the item.

I don't really see the difference.  The healer could still go get the item in-game if they want it, either way.

But you failed to see my point.  I agree that these situations happen all the time today -- as I said in my original post.  The difference is that if you're told to F-off, you're not wasting your money.

Obviously you don't have to buy it, and obviously it'd be much better if you could avoid people like this.  But in some instances it is hard to do this, particularly in endgame.

Again, the point of my post was to say that because of situations like this, many people are going to end up buying things they don't need.  I wouldn't buy them ever, and neither would you, which I commend you for.  But other people will feel pressured to, and you can say "they're idiots" all you want, but it still makes RMT seem like a shady practice to me.

Cryptic is hoping people feel pressured to buy stuff -- it's part of the business plan!

How is anyone going to feel pressure to use the item mall?

"Hey you dont have the Blue Falcon Cape you have to have it to play with us"  "But its statless what does it matter" "YOU hAVe to have it!!"    thats pretty much never going to happen.

"Do you have Chimney Sweep Hat yet?"  "No I'm just finishing the quest / craft to get it"   Is far more likely.   There are no Uber Items on the market they've stated that and anything that has an affect to it is available in game through the usual In Game Means so really where's the pressure?

The only people who are going to feel pressure are the same types of people who start smoking, drinking, or partying because a few other people they hang with do it.  Weak people who can't lead themselves will feel pressure to use the Item Mall.

Their item mall from the way they speak about it is giong to appeal to the people who want to have a fairly unique look that standard player B who just started playing and doesn't plan to use the item small doesn't have access too.  If their starting customization sucks eggs and all their in game customization there after sucks eggs then the QQ over the item mall is warrented but from the sounds of every video they have and every article and interview written thats not the case.

The simple fact of the matter is until Open Beta and the pre order customers get a hold of the game and the testers can talk about the game everyone is pretty much talking out of their rear on the item mall.

I used to hate item malls but after experiencing a good one (atlantica online and free realms)  I really dont' see the big constant QQ.  There are some Item Mall games out there that are horrible where all the content revolves around it but there are others that don't.  Atlantica puts all that money back into the game in content releases.  They had new dungeons, new events, a new special even server, and even new classes funded by the item mall.  The item mall items don't determine how good you are in game at all and all of them are sellable / tradeable many of them are available in game and none of them are weapons or armor.

Champions Online's item mall is really an unknown factor at this point.   We can all sit and spin and speculate all we want but honestly none of us know what exactly the extent of it is and we certainly have no idea how it affects the game.  To ME and me alone as long as the game's main content (quests, power sets, skills, dungeons, rewards,  & expansions etc) are on the same AAA level as other non item mall games then the Item Mall's existance doesnt' bother me at all and I'm not sure why it should bother anyone else other than those that have the Pokemon gotta catch em all addiction.

Seriously Banthis, thank you for your reply.  I never post on these boards, but it's refreshing to know after reading this whole thread, that not everyone on these forums is insane and actually knows what they are talking about.

To reiterate:  RMT's as announced have no impact on gameplay beyond decoration and are attainable in game.  Until this changes, take a deep breath and calm down people.

Again, as I've said before, in another thread, if stats are insignificant, why even put them in there? If items in game are easy to get then why charge for them in an Item Mall?  Oh because its easier.  Okay, well the difficulty curve will really depend on what is and what isn't necessary from the item mall. I can clearly state, as a beta player, that I don't know what the item mall holds...  its that item malls that have stats on their items really do matter a great deal in many cases... will it be a big deal in champions?  I don't know... YOU don't know... you were right in saying its just speculation on both our parts.

So, really item malls are more of a preference or not... some people can take them, some people can't.  It just seems like the ones that CAN take them try to convince the ones that can't that they SHOULD.  Right now, trying to convince me that MTs will not impact gameplay when there are items with stats and no facts that the items that we can get in-game will be commonly attainable, or even somewhat attainable.  If people want to go on what Bill Roper says, hey thats up to them, but not everything he's touted so far has been what they've performed.

    You've got that backwards.

Roper has confirmed that there will be items in the mall which cannot be attained any other way.

And the official statement from Cryptic says that there will be items with in-game effects (but those will also be attainable in game).

So, do you want people to start hyperventilating now? :P

So downtoearth, I see you have found another questionable company to defend?

I'll tell you why it's greed. Because those items should be included with the monthly fee. They are essentially taking items out of the game that would normally come from paying a subscription... Charging you a subscription, and then charging you again to get those items taken out.

That doesn't benefit the consumer at all. How dumb do you have to be to not see how that is pure greed and should not be  tolerated by the customers?

Aren't you going to be using the cash shop to buy all the skills that people who aren't stupid will get for free? Wasn't that the whole premise of one of your earlier fails? Just so we're clear, you linked a youtube video of someone leveling up skills and claimed it was a MT? Are you sure you should be allowed any money without a conservator present? Given your previous history of astute and correct observations, I'm going to go ahead and not worry about you kicking any butt.

Well, basically, you put them in there for the fools that WILL buy them.  Like the saying says, there's a fool born every minute.  Hey if someone will buy my soiled underpants, I'll sell them. That's not greedy, that's just showing the fools, that they're fools.  I don't have an issue w/ that.  Now if they could buy weaponX that will help them beat me sensless in the arena, I have an issue w/ that.

Here's an example. Why put the option on cars to get the ScotchGuard on the seats? It's usesless, YET, some people will buy it.

Holy hell those graphics look terrible! I knew they were going to go with a "comic book" art style, but the textures are horrific. Game play looks pretty cool. I would probably give this game a try if it weren't for the micro-transactions. Too bad.

Because if you pause the video and actually READ what it says, the guy leveled and he's picking his new skills.

I've found that most of the people who have professed their hatred of MT on these P2P games have never bothered to actually look for themselves what kind of items are for sell. Take EQ2 for instance, the items in the MT shop are fluff, house, or appearance slot items with no gameplay altering value what so ever. As for xp potions they are offered for people to compensate for the lack of population in lower teir areas. Of course it all comes down to self control, if you have none and buy the stuff "just because it's there" you have no one to blame but yourself. It's not like these P2P games don't give away these same type of items in the form of vet rewards and holiday events on a monthly basis.

So, do you want people to start hyperventilating now? :P

so then whats the big deal about the MT

in game effects are attainable in game.  anythign like an extra custome or something isnt. Wow Mt is such greed psh its nothing.

Your making a big deal out of nothing : )

So downtoearth, I see you have found another questionable company to defend?

I'll tell you why it's greed. Because those items should be included with the monthly fee. They are essentially taking items out of the game that would normally come from paying a subscription... Charging you a subscription, and then charging you again to get those items taken out.

That doesn't benefit the consumer at all. How dumb do you have to be to not see how that is pure greed and should not be  tolerated by the customers?

Can we all laugh at this one more time pleaseeeee, this one quote made me feel a little better about myself.

Holy hell those graphics look terrible! I knew they were going to go with a "comic book" art style, but the textures are horrific. Game play looks pretty cool. I would probably give this game a try if it weren't for the micro-transactions. Too bad.

I never post on the forums but after reading the above with "proof" of MT I had to say something. It may say Purchase but you are using your points from getting your levels to get your skills and stats, he is leveling up. He is not buying anything from an online store. Infact the online store is not even up so you can use it. If you goto Cryptic website it says the points you buy can be used for constumes and stuff. Want a new costume or pet great buy one. Maybe before people start to hate a game they should wait for it to come out see the real game play and what is really in it. But really my post is just some info about what really was going on in the video.

To reiterate:  RMT's as announced have no impact on gameplay beyond decoration and are attainable in game.  Until this changes, take a deep breath and calm down people.

    You've got that backwards.

All I've done in this post is correct misinformation.

We wouldn't want people accidentally buying a product thinking it's one thing when it's really another, would we now?

    your right sorry XD
