I can. This is probably one way I would balance Casters vs Combo users, to remove 1 or 2 shields from casters. Bear in mind, I havent played AoC enough yet, but this tweek seems logical to me...

But then the system would still there. What I meant was picture the PvE-combat without the shields and positional attacks, it would become incredibly boring.

Sorry, I worded myself badly. I meant, I can imagine AoC's combat system without the directional shields. Yes, the complexity of the combat would take a blow, but if by removing the shields would mean a better balance between casters vs combo users, it would be a small sacrifice in my opinion.

Funcom will have to come up with a genious tweek to balance classes, as it is now.

    • Spells damage ignore directional shields and armour.
    • Combo attack damage are affected by directional shields and armour.
    • All classes have access to the same directional shields.
    • Spells ignore the combo system.

Trying to find balance by following these "core rules" is virutally impossible. I dont envy the task the developers in funcom have in front of them. Specially, when every tweek comes with an endless whine.

Note; Im very new to the game, so if any of the points I made about the combat system if false, correct and Ill edit them out

The combat system I personally very much enjoy, and going back to play a game such as WOW or Aion...feels very boring (to me). This is one of the reasons I avoid the caster classes within the game because it just so boring in comparision, in an ideal world they would introduce a spell combo system, and magical shielding...maybe this is in the pipeline who knows.

Yeah I love the company that makes AoC.

I really loved the website hunt--that rocked hard. Man ..I wish i found all of those yummy badges, while increasing web traffic for whatever backroom deal FC had with those sites. Man that was a great Anniversary! Funcom is so great the way they prostitute out their subs base to get even more revenue off their customer's backs They did this year after they had soaked their customer base with all kinds of BS, and then celebrate their 1 year anniversary in this manner....they truly are a remarkable company.

Hey guys lets keep encouraging this behavior so that other game makers see that everybody is "fine" with that kind exploitation.

Lets help destroy this whole genre for everyone. I mean who cares????  right????

    Way to go FC!!

If you have problems staying on topic, and can't resist to muddy yet another thread with snappy sarcasm, try to at least make it look like you made an effort.

Btw, "Lets help destroy this whole genre for everyone. I mean who cares???? right????" ... Drama Queen, anyone?

I too must say how awesome this game is.  I am tired of all the trolls giving this game such a rough way to go. I am by no means a novice gamer and currently sub to 3 mmo's. AOC has by far the best graphics ,gameplay and pvp of any of them.  Ill be staying with this one for quite a while.

Well, as you can see on the official forums, the few remaining zealots spend more time writing suggestions and giving hope to the "people" instead of actually playing the game. That tells me a lot.

Just like you spend time here bashing AoC rather then playing the world's most awesome game aka WoW :)

That tells me a lot too you know :)

Playing: Battlefield - Bad company (Xbox360) Arma2, DFO (PC)
    On my radar: TSW, MO
MMO's played: SWG (pre cu/cu), WoW, AoC, WAR, DFO, Planetside
MMO's that I have tested: Lotro, L2, Aion, Ryzom

WoW is not a game its a virtual torture rack, its piss poor beyond any recognision. Its fulled with immature brats and ppl with little to non english skills. It has a non-existant PvP system, its story is worse then the one of pac man and its cartoonish looks frightens even the most angelic fanboi, admit it!

It does one thing good and that is its movement system, the way you can move almost like in a FPS game but frankly thats it. Its like a bad overhaul of Everquest 1 mixed in with all the crap you can find.

Id rather drive needles through my eyes then ever have to play the piece of shit of a game again

*Not that I want to play AoC either, just saying...*

But yeah I do agree, putting needles through my eyes sounds like a better thing then playing WoW again.

I agree wow is becomming very tiresome and needles in the eyes is appropriate. But id prefer needles in the eyes than sawing off my manhood with a blunt plastic spoon akin to returning to AoC. At least when i returned to wow there was people to return too.

The amount of fail in your response exceeds anyone's wildest expectations. What you have listed here is so abstract it can in fact fit to any online game in existence.

Immature community? No shit, you should go to Fury server in AoC, where 30 year-olds talk about virtual sex. In WoW you have 15-year olds who are immature. So why would such a "substantial" difference mean anything?

Story? Didn't know MMOs are primarily played because of stories, nice to find this out from a wise man like you. WoW is primarily based upon Warcraft III lore, so you might want to check that story out before claiming it is either non-existent or does not conform to your "quality standards".

Non-existent pvp? Don't know what qualifies as existence to you, but Arenas, BGs, Wintergrasp are played by millions every second (yes, I excluded ganking because that would be the crowning achievement of the "existent" pvp in AoC).

You can almost move like in a FPS? Taken too much drugs lately, buddy?

Everquest 1 overhaul? Well, if you are so abstract and if such a comparison is the basis of your unique critique, then why don't you start blaming Tolkien for overhauling ancient myths?

P.S. - Crashloop, for your information, I play WoW about 5 hrs per day (can you claim the same with your playing of AoC?) Liking an MMO does not mean you must play it 10 hrs per day, you know, so you can shut up with your useless comments. In fact, nice try for diverting attention. I was stating a simple fact that AoC players (what's left of them) are spending more time on the forum writing petitions and suggestions to some invisible hand and try to blatantly cover this by making me look like a fool. A poor attempt. And btw, I am a fast reader and writer, it does not take me whole day to skim through these forums and write responses. Sometimes I write them when I am using a taxi service in WoW.

In fact, when I was playing AoC, I also spent way more time on the forum than actually playing the game. I'm willing to bet you do the same, actually.

Oh, and btw, nice to know that the only defense for AoC the fanbois have in their arsenal is bashing WoW. Instead of talking about the state of AoC, people like openedge1 or Crashloop try to "convince" people that AoC is cool because it has either higher system specs required (openedge1 actually thinks that low system requirements are something to laugh at) or is simply better than poking your eyes with needles (nice argument btw). I'm sorry, you'll have to do better than that to overthrow the king od MMOs in your imaginary land.

Seriously? Have you played warcraft 3, reign of chaos/frozen throne, it isnt based on any story whatsoever, they just liked to use the surroundings of it, its a pile of crap at best and and yes it has no storyline, none. As for Warcraft lore, yeah if it were revamped for an 11 year old maybe, I have the lore from warcraft 1 and 2, you should explore it. Because in contrast to the WoW carebear lore its bloody and rich, filled with rather gruesome details. The 3rd one was bad as of a warcraft game reffering to lore but it was nothing compared to WoW so dont you start there.

Non-existent pvp? Don't know what qualifies as existence to you, but Arenas, BGs, Wintergrasp are played by millions every second (yes, I excluded ganking because that would be the crowning achievement of the "existent" pvp in AoC).

hmm PvP in AoC, you mean like keep sieges and fighting for control over your city, fighting for something that actually matters? Or are you reffering to some titles or stats to show off? Because something is popular doesnt make it good, its like claiming McDonals have good food, PvP in WoW is crap at best and those who say otherwise have never played a PvP oriented game.

You can almost move like in a FPS? Taken too much drugs lately, buddy?

Unlike you I dont need to attend AA meetings

Everquest 1 overhaul? Well, if you are so abstract and if such a comparison is the basis of your unique critique, then why don't you start blaming Tolkien for overhauling ancient myths?

Unlike Blizzards World of Warcraft Tolkien was a genius which created a whole new genre of fantasy titles, Tolkien is Everquest, WoW is Harry Potter

P.S. - Crashloop, for your information, I play WoW about 5 hrs per day (can you claim the same with your playing of AoC?) I dont play AoC, simple as that, congratulations for that meaningful remark

In fact, when I was playing AoC, I also spent way more time on the forum than actually playing the game. I'm willing to bet you do the same, actually.

    read above

Oh, and btw, nice to know that the only defense for AoC the fanbois have in their arsenal is bashing WoW. AoC has its issues Il agree to that, I dont like it nor plays it but after playing WoW to 60 in the past I would rather play AoC over and over a hundred times then have to play WoW over once. Its simply just boring, it has no city building, no guild pvp nor any real activities except from raiding. I dont care wether a game should be cool or lame but I do care about getting something else then just stats and gear, to me thats bland and pointless, I want to build cities and lay sieges to others, or perhaps simply engage in smaller player houses as seen in SWG, WoW hasnt got that, its focused on stats, gold and petty items.

  • KrewelKrewel Member Posts: 390

Papabear - AoC isn't based on stats, gold and e-penis? You either didn't revisit the game after 1.5 or are simply fantasizing about an MMO that isn't AoC at all. There are very minor differences between the games, and mostly are superficial, and even the few differences remaining (like combat system) cannot turn AoC into a successful title. Dynamic combat system alone can't provide months of enjoyment. If you cannot grasp that, then you know nothing of MMOs.

You've provided caustic remarks about WoW, very superficial accounts of you playing till 60 and claiming it's all about raiding, yet you didn't even reach the endgame. Talk about presumptious! How can you even claim anything about pvp or endgame when you only took a glimpse of WoW by levelling to 60? Unlike AoC, WoW actually starts at endgame. And both games are more or less single player experiences till you hit maximum level, so noone in this world can actually take you seriously for bashing WoW midgame.

And nota bene - superficial observations and cocky opinions don't turn manure into gold, or in this case, opinions into facts. Your dreamy bubble might not like this, but in the long run the majority of people have seen that WoW is a much more fun experience than AoC. Your comparison with McDonald's is false yet again, since in actuality AoC would fit the profile, namely you quickly consume it like a hamburger and in the end it only leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

AoC lost more than 80% of its people during the first months (from 800k to 100-200k). This fact alone tells me more about the state of the game (since I was also part of this exodus, albeit not entirely) than all the hopes and false promises fanboys come up with to defend the game. WoW is shite, you say? People playing it for 4 years and its subscription numbers rising ever since dictates otherwise.

I dont know why some people find the combat in AoC was dumbed down.I guess some didnt like the idea of clicking more keys to execute a combo.

I still like AoC, reason dont play it is because I would like Funcom to expand the map. The last content they added felt like the content they were suppose to include at launch. But it's ok, if they continue adding stuff, I am sure I will come back.

Although the world felt small because of instancing, I give AoC a 8.5/10. Music is really epic. You gotta play this game and explore all the areas to experience the good stuff. Tortage, the starter area, doesn't make justice to this game.

I really liked very much the combat with the chance of a juicy fatality. The combat animations are very well executed, plus character models are sexy!

By Set! Stygia is my favorite area, I hope Funcom adds another pyramid. I found that instance more enjoyable that some dungeons.

    Edit: loved the stygians!

  • KrewelKrewel Member Posts: 390

Stygia and everything related to Stygia is the best, Aquilonia and Cimmeria are depressing as hell. The game should be designed so that as a Stygian you can, if you choose, only move in Stygian zone, only level up in Stygian zones and feel more connected to Stygia as a whole (for example, quests would differ for you in Stygia as well as in Cimmeria). Instead we have like 3 puny instances connected to Stygia. Bleh!

You missed something if you only had 3 puny instances in stygia (im guessing your destanies)  As a stygian i did a majority of my leveling in stygia, for the same reasons you liked it.  Except for thunder river, i loved that map.

From what ive seen, you can do whatever you want on any of the maps to level up, your destiny quests are the only forced home maps quests (i think)

Yes, that's the problem and that what I was saying. As a Stygian I should be able to level up entirely in Stygia, not move to some depressing Cimmeria and do FedEx quests for some barbarians just to get to the highest level.

Well by the best estimates from box sales and xfire 1 in 20 people love age of conan enough to keep paying for it. Most people hate it and left, they came back to retry it for free then left again.

idk but wow, war, eq1, eq2, and many ftp mmos are just better aside from graphics, about 17 other MMOs have enough going on to attract more people...AoC is the oppisite it had a lot of people then reppeled the heck out of them.

Funcom has reviewed all of its assets relevant for
impairment testing. This process has led to
recognition of an impairment loss of around
3,1 MUSD for Age of Conan due to a decrease in
numbers of subscribers for the game. Funcom Q4 10 report.

idk but wow, war, eq1, eq2, and many ftp mmos are just better aside from graphics, about 17 other MMOs have enough going on to attract more people...AoC is the oppisite it had a lot of people then reppeled the heck out of them.

Is this your forum signature? This is on topic how?

    I do like the 1 in 20 quote. 1 out of 20...where?

    According to Xfire they have 13 million+ subscribers...so if 1 in 20 love it...that is a population of 690k+.

When you pull numbers out of the sunless hole, this is what happens..

    Bad math is bad.

The reason I love AoC is that this is the most original and "next-gen" mmo I've played. For me AoC is the only MMO I've tried that attempts to pair single-player-gameplay quality with MMORPG scope. Other MMOs I tried are wow, perfect world, L2 and aion .Before I started playing AoC I spent most of my time playing Oblivion, FPSs or console games.

    Some specific points imo are:

    1. Stunning, immersive and brutal world atmosphere

    2. Combat and Control System - I'm not just talking about the combo system for melee - the whole movement system is much more responsive than in any other mmo I've played. I actually feel like I'm controlling my character.

    3. Open ffa world pvp from the word go on pvp servers - no "get to lvl 25 then you are finally allowed to pvp but only in certain zones" boredom here...

    4. Guild-based rather than race-based which makes the game politics more dynamic. I was really impressed to hear about a raid group in which some of the members "mutinied", left the group and started killing the rest of the group - sounds bad, but the point is you just don't get freedom to do this kind of thing in RvR.

    5. Interesting zones. I don't care about having a seamless world to explore if after walking for 5 mins all I see is the same flat, generated texture and scenery. Zones in AoC are large, well designed. have great atmosphere and land layout - and being interesting and having atmosphere counts for more than the simple fact of having a seamless world imo.

    6. Interesting classes

    7. Interesting dungeons

(xibaluku feels more like tomb raider online than a typical mmo)

    8. Lack of boring grind

    9. Vistrix is possibly the coolest boss I've ever seen in a game.

    10. Detailed character customization

11.Boobs and fatalities (I don't care what anyone says about this being immature - I prefer to have them)
