What type of company settles for second place? What type of person doesn't want to be first? Plus, this is sort of saying: "Yeah, it probably isn't as good as WoW but we're okay with that." And that's the wrong message to send to customers. Shooting for second place was the strategy of  Warhammer and that failed hard, so I see aion following the trend.

No, you're making assumptive statements based on an honest, and logical statement from one of Aions devs.

I think any software publisher/developer would be unrealistic if they expected to out subscribe WoW. I also find it hard to believe that ANY developer deliberately aims for mediocrity, NCSoft and others are merely being realistic.

MMOdata.net shows that there are around 23 million subcribers to MMO's and with wow apparantly having half of those, what dev in their right minds would believe they were going to top that. WoW is/was a phenomenon that went against the expected norm, it will probably never happen again even to WoW2.

People do not leave successful games in a mass exodus, they may dwindle away over time but we are creatures of habit and for many wow is/was their first mmo and so they continue on happily.

WoW will wither slowly over a long period it is to big to be killed outright.

My time in beta has left me with the feeling that NCSoft are delivering a game as good as any out there and better than most games released in the last two years, I beta'd many of them, sadly with head in hands. I think Aion is stable and polished and so far looks like a game people will not leave through lack of either mechanics or performance.

The fact that like wow, Aion is marketed in asia as well as the west means that it will almost certainly take second spot, its nearly there already with its asian subs already.

Also with the WoW shutdown in China, WoW's numbers are more like 6-7 million now rather than 11 or 12 million.

From your "owned" link: "Lee noted that trying to match WoW's dominance would be "very hard," but that the company was confident that Aion would be a success in the West."

The game will be successful, game over.

The article also says "Lee noted that trying to match WoW's dominance would be "very hard," but that the company was confident that Aion would be a success in the West."  They're going for second place because first place is retarded. Who cares if they topple WoW? WoW will destroy itself, why waste money doing something that another will do for you?

Aion will probably be second over WoW, that's what I think so far. Oh wait, it is already 2nd place, I don't see an MMO with more than 3.5 million subscribers.

Id be surprised if this game manages to come near the subscriber numbers of Guild wars or hell even FFXI's 500.000 active after a year. Its a very good solid game but its nothing that blows anyone away.

What? Were you trying to post on another topic or something?

No, you feel like you need to stand up for a company?  You think Blizzard cares?  Seriously,  you do realize they want to make money right?  So why are you "standing up" for them like you were an official employee.  Why can't you just say, "Ok I like X about  aion, don't like Y about Aion and feel so so on Z".  Why do you feel the need to say haha what a pathetic company for trying to be 2nd place?

Unless you work for Blizzard,  there is no point in it.

If the figures for Aion on the chart are incorrect it would also be reasonable to assume that so are the WoW figures on the same chart.

I agree it won't be 2nd, but I think it will still have a strong following. I definitely can't disagree with the fact that both of those games are new, have huge backing, and tons of hype going for them.

But for now, I think Aion will get a pretty great following if they keep up with huge content updates like patch 1.5 which we will have on release.

Edit: also, I would leave in a heartbeat for FFXIV
