I am unsurprised. This will make money off children that do not really understand the old Star Wars ideas that older people enjoy. These are the kids that think Jar Jar is a brilliant character. These are the people that enjoyed the Clone Wars cartoons. There are many of them, and we will have to accept that. I am quite upset by the prospect of this game, however.
Uh...yeah...I HAVE kids who saw Jar-Jar as their 1st Star Wars character...trust me, even THEY find him repulsive. Now sure...there may be that 1 in 10,000,000 kid who actually LIKES Jar-Jar, but those kids will not have the mental capacity to play even a dumbed down Star Wars MMO. I think the Jar-Jar market is quite slim mate.
Honestly free realms is nothing more than a stripped down mmo framework with minigames based on several popular console and web flash games. It is the least creative work of an mmo I have ever played. It is a hacked together game that does nothing more than give people 15 jobs to level up.
I say this with absolute certainty. Free realms has the worst retention rate of players in the history of mmos. 5 million users have signed up to try it and soe can not even fill one server and we are not even talking a server the size of normal mmos. The entire gameworld is the size of one large zone in other games.
Soe has no idea how to make games that people enjoy and want to play beyond a the few die hard fans they still have. Why would anyone go into business with them now?
The only good thing I see coming out of this is that hopefully it pulls some of the leet kiddies toward it instead of TOR. Can't wait to watch the sh*t storm and spin when this hits the official SWG forums.
I wonder what kind of an analysis they did to think that a Star Wars game catered towards 13 year olds would be successfull. They made SWG easier and dumbed it down thinking it would have a better impact on the casual market but that wasn't the case. This just shows that Star Wars is really a one of a kind franchise that is not for everybody.
They really should make a racing game of some sort since most kids love fast and cool looking vehicles or a MMORPG of some animation that is really popular, like Ice Age.
I'm going to go curl up in fetal position under my bed and hope I wake up soon.
My guess is that this is a trial balloon being floated by either SOE or LEC--an initial probe to see if there might be any consumer interest in this kind of thing.
I already responded to this in another thread, but I'll copy it here to save people searching:
LEC partnering with SOE again for another StarWars MMO ----> "Masochism: The deriving of pleasure, or the tendency to derive pleasure, from being humiliated or mistreated, either by another or by oneself. A willingness or tendency to subject oneself to unpleasant or trying experiences."
P.S. SOE will probably read positive responses from their own shills and conclude that there is a high demand for this project lol. You know, their usual solid market research ^_^.
SOE... Making ANOTHER Star Wars game... Probably cartooney... Maybe based on Clone Wars???
Man... Sony just bent all my awesome childhood memories of Chewbacca and Han Solo and Boba Fett over a table and broke out the bat. Why, Sony, WHY MUST YOU DO THIS TO THE MOST BELOVED IP EVER???
This is just silly! Regardless of the style or approch it's going to appeal mostly to SW fans and those will be busy with TOR. Either this will flop, or it will blow TOR out of the water and TOR will go down or the base will split and they'll both struggle to stay afloat.
This is so utterly SOE that one can actually envisage the conversation in Austen.
Underling; 'Boss! Boss! It looks like SWTOR is going to bite deep into our already dwindling subscriber base!'.
Smedley; 'Yes, we must come up with an original response to this challenge!'.
Underling; 'Well, we could re-open a few Classic SWG servers for a start. We have the code, we know people want to play it and it will distinguish our mature, rich game from their simple, run-fight-loot-and-repeat kiddie version!'.
Smedley: 'Yes, that'san excellent idea! We'll pour millions into making an even simpler, run-fight-loot-and-repeat kiddie version ourselves!'.
Underling: 'Wha...?'
Smedley; 'And to think they called me insane! Well, who's laughing now, Dr. Melnick and Pill-Lady Lucille?'
This does not make any sense... Making a Free Realms/Star Wars would just be another bank of barely used servers that would produce no profit.
SOE has a broken relationship with Lucas Arts and I doubt that a relationship can be reestablished based on the alleged success of a Free to Play - Kiddie MMO.
IF this is true then its a good thing that I have returned...Looks like I have work to do.
It's April 1st. You're welcome, and I am going to hell for lying.
Although my calender says otherwise, I'm going to believe you, as nothing this idiotic could really be happening.
Also, don't worry about any reprimand for lying around here. Happens all the time, especially when discussing game population. And if you're somehow exposed as a liar, they'll just lock the thread for you.
At first I was shocked upon hearing the news. Then on second thought I realized that the one thing that $OE and LA have in common is blind, unadulterated greed that has no boudaries, which makes the basis of their unholy alliance. Greed is the only motivator I can see as a reason for LA to willingly jump in bed with $OE again after the notorious SWG fiasco. I am sure LA was on board with this proposal as soon as $OE boasted about 4-5 miilion Fleece Realm players and projected even more for Cash Wars. After all, LA took $OE's NGE sales pitch hook, line and sinker.

lol how much more casual can you get. What are they going to do let you start off as a fucking level 80 Jedi Master? Have hirelings do quests for you so you gain xp while you show off your lightsaber?
I love the Star Wars universe KOTOR was a killer game and im still not sure if im going to play TOR or not. I like the character interaction and being able to choose what you say instead of just accepting quests. Im just not sure how MMO the game is going to be. If they can make it story based but with lots of grouping Id be a happy camper. Im tired off all these Post WoW solofest games. I just hope FE has a lot of grouping at higher levels, I hate paying 15 bucks a month for a game that I can get to max by myself and cant group cuz everyone wants to solo because there is no need to group.
I am very suprised by the news Lucas & SOE joining hands again for a new game with the Star Wars IP, but even more suprised that it seems that most who replied in this topic must all be casual gamers (of course it's obvious most are not casuals), of course would have liked it more if the anouncement would be something like SWG2. Because well SOE is still the only company that has created MMORPG's, where others only creat only Action Online Games in my opinion or just MMO's.
I doubt many on the "refuge" forums would be considered "casual gamers".
It all makes some sence, now. I couldn't fathom how SWG and TOR was going to run, side by side, as many have suggested. No company, expecially as market savy as LA, wants to be put in a position where it is competing with itself. However, a clone war "tween" browser based game, free to play, with heavy RMT, is probably not a threat to TOR. I'd imagine the meeting between SOE and LA went something like this;
LA - Well.........., with TOR coming to fruition and SWG being so low in subs, it's probably time to "sunset" SWG.
SOE - But........., Wait..........., Uhhhhhhh..........,
LA - Sorry, but we all know you had your chance. We knew this was not going to work in Dec. 05 when 200000 subs fizzled and we started talks with Bioware.
SOE - But our new game, Free Realms is doing so good, it's got 5 mil accounts. Hey, we could do a SW type of free realms.......
LA - Heard in the background on speaker phone (oh......., go ahead and throw them a bone, it's of no consequence, anyway)...... Yeah, we might discuss such an option.
Drakull has been muzzled of late, not much being talked about on the O-Boards other than zombies and GCW, SWG loses another Dev with no replacement, GMs are at a new all time low, etc etc. Looks like the handwritings on the wall.

sooner the nge shuts down the better by the way i am no longer going to call that thing that go's by the name swg that. $OE killed swg with the nge and so the nge is swg new name now.
still the sooner we get that game shut down the better not only that does $OE know what is going to happen when they start working on this 'casual' sw mmo? we all know that the whole casual gaming thing is a fad sales of the wii are dropping like a rock the 360 is doing the same
if $OE wants to make money then the only way to do it is to tell us sorry and bring back the pre-cu i would bet that a pre-cu swg running besides tor would have more subs and be making more money then tor
You guys act like they are defiling the bible or something. It's just a video game based on just a story...
Nah, I think people act like they got ripped off and lied to repeatedly. I also think they act like they think someone got away with it to some extent. They may also act like people who put a lot of time, energy and emotion into building a community, only to have it stripped away apparently for no better reason than corporate greed and short-sightedness. Some also act like something they've enjoyed since childhood has been carelessly dragged through the gutter by corporate bean-counters.
Yeah, I think that's what people act like .
P.S. In my experience, all the above tends to make the average person feel rather pissed off.

Nothing more than a bone thrown at SOE, by LA, for losing SWG at the release of TOR.
The only good thing I see coming out of this is that hopefully it pulls some of the leet kiddies toward it instead of TOR. Can't wait to watch the sh*t storm and spin when this hits the official SWG forums.
I'm scared now... somone... hold me, make the pain stop!
On a more serious note, I really can't bel.... Oh yeah, it's SOE. I can believe SOE is doing this to Star Wars, I just don't like it.

honestly? im glad.
1.this is the first real sign that swg is on the way out. soon.
2.free realms isnt doing nearly as good as some might think. so chances are this abortion wont be around long either.
3. this and free realms could be a sign that soe knows it cannot produce a real mmo any longer. (lets hope!)
