A quote: "Especially since you've got such a strong singleplayer element in the story and choice features, how important is grouping to Star Wars: The Old Republic?
Blaine: I think it's a very important message we want to get out right now, because there's a lot of questions out there. People are saying, "Okay, we see it, we get it. It looks like a BioWare game and that looks like a singleplayer experience." We really want to make sure that it's clear that it's not [a singleplayer game]. Obviously what we've shown so far are the new things we're trying to bring to the MMO space, but grouping is going to be very important.
The closest demonstration we've had so far is where we show the flashpoint where we've got the the Sith Warrior grouped up with the Bounty Hunter. That's a grouping experience, and that includes your story experience, which is something we want to be sure people are clear on. When you're grouped, it doesn't impede the story whatsoever, so you can still progress the story as a group. It's not a singleplayer experience in any way, shape or form.
That said, if you want to do solo play that's something that you can do as well. It's a goal of ours to make sure that we cater to all those play styles. It someone is like, "I don't wanna group, I wanna play a BioWare game. I wanna go through the story and do things on my own." you can do that. You're gonna see other people running around the world, as you would in any other MMO. On the other hand, if you want to group you're gonna be able to go through the game that way as well."
I think Bioware and I have different ideas about what makes a mmorpg MASSIVE !?!!?!

I think that says it. It's still a massive world, you'll still see others wandering about in the same areas as you. They're just saying grouping is an element in gameplay, and that they're hearing everyone's concerns. Of course, that's the optimist in me again. I'm still speculating.
Because there are instances?
He clearly said there are areas where there can be numerous people running around (just like a normal MMO). I guess you just chose to ignore that part.
Just be honest. You're crying that this is not SWG2. But why would they make a sequel to a game that failed miserably?
Nowhere in that piece of information was there anything to suggest how big or small the world itself would be. So how do you figure it's non-massive? I mean, come on...
I just dont get why games like this are sold as MMORPGs. Clearly it is would be better suited as a story driven single/multiplayer game than an MMORPG. I mean what reason would there be for this game to be a MMORPG?
Except ofcourse the monthly fee...
My gaming blog
I'm pretty sure there is nothing to worry about. From everything i've heard this is still going to be an mmo but they want it to be as driven and exciting as a single player game, thats one reason why its fully voiced, makes the game feel deeper and more realistic.
But whether this game turns out to be bigger or smaller than what we are hoping for, it is still a bioware game. What could possibly be wrong with that?
Hi Draccan, it appears you are still trying. What exactly makes a MMO massive to you? I mean arn't you currently a subscriber to AoC, if not disregard this, if so.... LOL @ YOU. Are you serious? Massive like those 40000 load screens you encounter in that lifeless MMO you play? We get it, you're still mad cause it's not SWG two, cry some tears for us (
Every day it's the same on these forums, somebody like yourself roles around here with opinion and presents it as fact. The guy said you get the option to group if you want, just because you can chose to solo does not mean this game wont be massive. And lol you act like you are shocked for flashpoint grouping to be considered a grouping experience. why? Grouping with people and having a interactive story sounds like not only a grouping experience, but an amazing one at that.
Edit: Btw I can't help but laugh at your quote under your avatar "Sandbox is king". Only two I know of, EvE and Second Life (haha). You should quite MMOs imo. Or find a game that is interesting to you and leave the ones you are not, like tor, alone. But what will you do with all that spair time you have? : /
So what is this game missing thats making it not a MMO? Be sure to think hard!
I'm actually glad this thread popped up, I'll like to come back to it when they post videos and information about the PvP and open world missions later.
It is kind of amusing that he would quote something, highlight one part but completely dismiss the other parts. *shrugs* But there you go.

Well, Vanguard promised you could solo to lvl 50 and it was true. What they didnt see fit to mention was if you solo you better be satisfied with nothing but crap loot. I soloed to 50 and after lvl 30 I didnt loot one weapon or piece of armor that was better than what I had equipt.... not one for 20 lvls..
They like telling these ambiguous half-truths with little to no elaboration, always be wary...
Indeed, it's great to see the clowns roll out honking their noses.
It's always funny because every single one to claim this won't be a MMO, never say why. It's a MMO, they just can't swallow it. I'm still waiting for one to give me a missing feature that classifies this as a Single Player. To bad that will never happen.

First, I'd like to note that I think the same way. I do believe this will be an MMO.
However, there is no proof it is at this point except the developers word (which, in the case of BioWare, is good enough for me). However, I can understand people remaining quietly skeptical and not choosing to get hyped until the game is released.
What I -DON'T- understand are people who claim to -KNOW- that it is not an MMO. Because that is impossible. Period.

This is my only problem. Anybody can believe it will or wont be a MMO. Thats fine. But don't come here and make a ignorant thread like this one and claim it's GOING to be exactly how you think it will be. Draccan is pulling everything out of his ass, apparently he had to go arm deep with this one.
Edit: I should be more clear with what I'm saying. I'm fine if he comes here and says "I don't see how this is a MMO", I obvously say it's a MMO. But we don't know if it will be linear and small, like Draccan believes, I mean "knows".
Where exactly did you invent the idea that its linear and non-massive? Because that isn't what he said.

Normally I wouldn't entirely believe a developer when it comes to all the shock and awe of their feature list... but what really stands out for me about this game, (and bioware in particular) is how tight lipped they are about features they aren't entirely sure how they will implement them or whether or not they will have certain other aspects in the game. Basically what they talk about having are things they pretty much have in the game already or are things they are showing.
This differs greatly from a lot of the MMOs we currently see, where developers will promise the world and show us very little of the gameplay.
Ah, another one who expected this to be swg 2.
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.
And someone who's pissed its not going to be KOTOR 3.

I never thought of it that way, but thats a great view on it. Most MMOs rush out with a laundry list of features and only half of those make it to the game. Guess they are playing it safe and slowly releasing previews when it's ready.
MMO means different things to different people.
To me it is 1 world where everyone is forced to interact with everyone else.
If you can can go online and play by yourself in your own little instance and not have to deal with anyone other than passing by them thats an MO (Multiplayer online).
Not everyone will agree with me thats fine and dandy, like I said it means different things to different people.
EDIT: I have no problem with an MMO or an MO. The problem is when I buy an MMO and it turns out to be an MO. That is a real kick in the nuts for me.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
Now Playing: N/A
Worst MMO: FFXIV
Favorite MMO: FFXI
It seems all the fanboys come out and say "Oh, you're complaining because you want SWG2." This is not the case. I want a Star Wars MMO that doesn't seem to take even more steps towards isolating players than the genre already has. Sure, story is important. I love Mass Effect and Elder Scrolls, and will also probably love Dragon Age Origins. I, however, play MMO's for the social aspects and I doubt it will deliver on that front.
Yes, we'll see other people in cities, big deal. Half of them are people you'll never interact with anyway. Give us a reason to get into groups the way Warhammer did with Group Questing, as everyone who has played that game knows it is the only good to come out of it.
BioWare have -ALWAYS- been super tight-lipped about their games. They announce it and then there is a looooong silence. It has been their Modus Operandi for ages and I honestly did not believe them to change that for TOR. I don't want them to.
Why?
Simple reason. If they only talk about what they are sure of, there might be little information, but there won't be broken promises. And broken promises is something that kills MMO's.
I'm not bothered by their comperative slow release of Info. Sure, on a fan-level I am, since I, like anyone else, want new info, new, exciting, shiny stuff, but on a rational level, I believe this is a smart course of action.

Elder Scrolls is from Bethesda >.> not sure if you think it's from BioWare.
And you will get more info when they are ready to release it. For me to be happy with grouping, all it has to do is provide entertainment for me and my friends. Thats all I want. But I can understand people wanting more. guess we will see.
It's perfectly fine to post an opinion on a game.
It's silly to post a final opinion on a game that you have hardly any information on, that is not even in closed beta, where we could be leaked a lot of information.
It makes you look stupid to say your opinion is fact based on something that does not even support your opinion. Please, just stop.
Is the ability to solo your way through the game the basis of the OP's argument? because by that rational WoW is no longer an mmorpg either.. or maybe i missed what they thought disqualified this game as an mmo.

You get to complete the story with your friends. How is that taking a step backwards? You're interacting with each other and a friendly NPC, then enemy NPCs when you get to the combat part. I highly doubt there will be no incentive at all to group up... ever.
