yep ,my norton system work was deactivated because of a supposed error ,weird it works all the time but with gg around it start to act like a noob(NS)
Dont understand the issue here as when your playing AION you arnt surfing Free porn sites or downloading piratebay torrents ... so you wouldnt acquire any viruses anyways and if anyone tried to connect to your computer Vista tells you anyways.... So whats the issue?

I comprehend great thanks. Not sure you do, as you seem to think that this being a "FORUM" and all allows you to tell people what to put on their system or not.
I don't randomly tell people what to put on their systems.
But if they make a post, are they talking to themselves?
If I go to the maximumpc forums and tell someone I'm building a computer and I get critiques for or against what I plan to put in my system, you wont see someone come and say "Who are you to tell him what to put in his system!!"
And regardless of what people tell the poster, he will make a decision.
From my experience Norton causes loads of problems all on its own.

It is a fact that GG uses nefarious programming techniques to overcome all sorts of system level security procedures against recommendations of system producers, and it is a fact that lots and lots of people have had major problems with it because of this. Sitting on the edges denying that anyone has had any problems because of your own experience is frankly juvenile and is of use to no-one, least of all yourself. What people chose to put on their system is up to them, particularly when it an utter (and potentially dangerous) POS such as GG. If you have had a positive experience then good for you, but please don't be so pathetic as to deny that others do have problems with the software.
I'm quite interested in all of this but would like to know more about the facts of GG and it's "Nefarious" techniques, your post didn't contain any facts for me to check up on, please could you list them as I'm genuinely interested in knowing about what GG actually does and who it's misused by these gaming companies.

It seems if you point out the bad side of Gameguard and what the potential of such software is, then the entire thread will get deleted. I pointed out some blatent facts in another thread, and now the thread is GONE. Not even locked, just GONE. One more reason NOT to buy this game. You go right ahead if you want some company looking over your shoulder all the time.
Plenty of people in this thread only pointed out that the OP is very misinformed.
Read through the reply more if you want to know why Gameguard is NOT a rootkit and why the OP had some bad informations except when it comes to his opinion about GG. Since we all know opinions cannot be prove wrong, but wrong information can.

Let me tell you that I was one of the unlucky ones that was affected by Sony's Copy Protection program.
Back then CD burner drives were like 800 friggin dollars! An empty CD writable disc was like 25 dollars!!
I buy a nice music CD from the label Sony BMG, play it on my PC to listen to music in my room and have some fun.
A couple days later I wanted to back up some important documents on CD and I am running into an error with my drive.
Nero said that it couldn't find any CD writer medium!!!!
What happened? Our almighty Sony had installed a rootkit, rewritten the firmware of my 800 friggin dollar CD writer and turned it into a regular CD rom drive!!
I could not reset the firmware, nor update it anymore! It was just out of warranty (just little over a year old).
So as student back then, I didnt had money flying around. It took me quite some saving to get the 800 bucks together to buy this drive!!
And thanks to Sony's rootkit it got completely destroyed!!
Luckily the local shop I bought the drive had gotten air of Sony's rootkit, had several other customers coming back with the same problem and was willing to replace my drive with a new one.
I formatted my harddrives, reinstalled my OS. Installed the disc again. And didn't dare to play any music CD anymore on my computer.
A couple days later! BAM!!!! Exact same problem again! My CD writer was rendered useless again!! I thought WTF!!!
So I got back to the store again, told the whole story that I had formatted all my harddrives, reinstalled everything. Didn't play any music CD's, etc.
The store owner was completely baffled!!
You know what happened???
THANKS TO SONY!!!! I got so paranoid..... I ended up buying NEW harddrives and a NEW motherboard and NEW RAM!!! Costed me closely to 1000 friggin dollars. Bye bye savings!!

GG has nothing to do with a rootkit... stop bringing lies out to the folks who dont know much about computers.
GG is just here to protect the game from basic hacks and cheats - GG is fine as it is... we never had any problem with it. If your virus scanner detects it as a virus, thats normal as GG acts like a virus scanner - just remove it from your realtime check - how I hate those conspiracy theories on the internet...

What I did say was that it was a badly programmed piece of software, using means that have horrific implications for system security, and doesn't even do what it was intended to do. I can quite understand why someone would not want it on their system (I chose to, but I resent having to install GG) .

Basically opens a tunnel into your system that bypasses ALL your security features. And to make things worse, it stays memory resident even AFTER you log out of the game. (What game needs anti-hacking software when your not logged in?) None of this concerns you at all? That's like saying, "Ok USA. You have a kick ass military, well funded investigative bureaus, and local law enforcement across the country. So I'll just sign off my second amendment rights because, I obviously won't need them.

Gameguard does exactly what it should do. Try find and stop people from hacking and cheating in the game.
And ofcourse it's a never ending race with hackers finding ways around it with new hack programs and Gameguard identifying them and updating their GG database.
EXACTLY THE SAME as with Anti Virus software. It protects you from existing virusses, but it doesn't protect you from new ones.
There will be a day that you are the unlucky one to run into a brand new virus and your AV software not detecting it.
That's how it goes!
Both Gameguard and Antivirus software are REACTIVE programs. It's their bussiness and way of making money to continuely and activily track down / hunt down hack/cheat software (GG) and virusses/worms/malware (AV).
Both gameguard and AV software operate the same way. They both are able to bypass sertain security to be able to do their job.... simply because they have to operate at that low level... as the programs they try to hunt down and detect operate at that low level!!
In no way does Gameguard having horrific implications to your security. It's bullshit and you know it!
I can keep repeating myself like an old record as I have been saying it over and over and over already in this topic!!
I run Avast Home Edition, Windows FireWall on and my Apple Basestation configured in NAT as main protection... and all my games, including the ones using Gameguard! Run absolutely fine, without having to dissable any of my security programs nor do I have to dissable any security features!!

Badly programmed software? Yes, but no worse than most programs out there.

Doesn't do what it was intended to do? Not correct. I can even explain it to you if you explain this "horrific implications to system security" to me first.
Of course, I also understand why people without sufficient computer knowledge will hate GG since it make them do extra work or god forbid learn about stuff, but I seen much worst softwares in my life.
Many single player games install gamespy arcade and many anti virus programs see that as a problem when it really is nt . The only people that this will bother in anyway at all are a few geeks who worry about the most minimal threat to thier security. Theres an awful lot worse out there which we are exposed to everyday online and we dont worry about . This issue really is only brought up by people who dont want AION to do well ,most likly worried WOW fans who fear and exodus from thier game of choice . Because AION is a quality game they are trying a different tactic to put people of playing .

That's exactly the point. Anti-virus packages "see" gamespy arcade. Gameguard has been known to bypass, and in some instances disable, certain services required by the security software as it tries to stay hidden on your system. All the while, being accessible to nProtect's update servers for as long as the program is running. (I believe I've mentioned the fact that Gameguard continues to run even AFTER you log out of the game.) We all know how often servers get hacked. Who's to say nProtect's servers won't? In fact, many of nProtect's clients have had MAJOR security breaches. Coincidence? Maybe...
All it takes is 1 keylogger, slipped into your computer, through software that has been known to bypass your security suites. May as well leave your front door unlocked, because your neighborhood has a police force. Hell, that's not even the right analogy. It's more like giving the cops the keys to your house.
Just because it's "supposed" to do good doesn't mean it's invulnerable to malicious intent. The safest systems are the ones with informed, proactive users. - Fact

The problem with Game Guard is it often intereferes with software meant the protect your computer. It's been known to open ports that shouldn't be open. It intereferes with many antivirus programs, themselves poorly written. It has hardware and software incompatabilities. I suppose some might forgive that except for one thing. It doesn't work. Almost as soon as a new version is released people begin circumventing it. Then in the rush to circumvent it people end up going to web sites they really shouldn't and catch some raally nasty malware. Different versions of it installed with different games intererfere with each other and it makes itself hellishly difficult to remove even when you have removed the application that installed it. Most of the time it doesn't even inform you it's being installed, which is illegal in many places. It's a scam both on the people who play games and the people who make games.
Ok, so Gameguard cause security risk mainly because people circumvent it and caught something while doing it?

As for the other issues, currently still looking through difference sources, most of what you say were a bit exaggerated. No valid sources have stated what you have said, but still looking, even though to find valid source that is not based on "he say, she say" have always been difficult.
Edit: These sources are very lazy, they did not update their data with the Gameguard patch updates. Hmm, alot of unconfirmed references flying around, no wonder Gameguard got such a bad rep, some of these even are based on assumptions. Invalid sources everywhere.

Not sure what national security job you work in, nor do I believe Aions Gameguard is a threat to my "privacy", but if people want to see what I browse on youtube or whatever, fine, no sweat off my nose. (but they'll probably die of boredom first)
But you are correct, you do have the freedom to not buy the game which is the ultimate consumer freedom I suppose.

I installed GG once for some FtP game (Mamboniji or something like that), had to do a complete system restore to get my computer to run correctly afterwards.
Maybe they've improved it since then, but I will never play another game that does that, I simply do not have the personal time to rebuild my computer that often. It isn't a root kit and the security issues are vague and may or may not be true, but it is a very poorly written piece of software that I will not install again, ever.
