What? When the hell did this happen? A fantasy MMO has similar play styles to other fantasy MMO's? I dont freaking believe it!!!!!
Degrees, buddy: AoC, War, EQ2, FFXI , AO and a whole bunch I could list have less in common with WoW's combat than Aion does. Some classes in Aion play almost EXACTLY like they do in WoW; by exactly, I mean they are nearly isomorphic and have an identical play style as a result.
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.
I find it amusing when fanbois compare every game to WoW like it was the first MMORPG ever created. Stick with consoles noobs, just because WoW was YOUR first MMO doesn't mean it's the FIRST MMO.
It's like looking at a Lexus or a Ford F350 and saying, "It has 4 wheels, brakes, a stearing wheel and an internal combustion engine.... ZOMG itz a Model T clone!"

Oh, Kinda like a ranger in eq kites while soloing so a ranger in aion that kites while soloing is almost identical to eq? Or a spirit master that plays very very similarly to a necro/mage in eq1 or in daoc? See my point? Guess where wow got those from! Certain classes will play very similarly or have close to identical styles of play. Did they copy wow? maybe, or maybe they copied something from the older games. There is no problem with that, if it works and its fun, why screw it up! I find that the SM actually plays like old EQ1's necro/mage and also like eq2's mage and also like the necro in vanguard. However, they all have their own unique twist that they put on their own classes. I could make a case for almost all classes of all games playing almost identically in many aspects. You notice the ones like AOC and War who tried to change things up, are not actually doing all that great compared to most mmo's on the market. Making something new and completely different is not always a good thing. While I am all for change,Fantasy based MMO's are not one that I feel will ever change drastically because the nature of the genre just doesn't really lend itself to any really huge changes.

Shame I managed to play a few characters to 20, jack ass, so I know exactly how similar the classes are in terms of combat.
My very fist MMORPG was AO back in 2002, which was followed by RO and FFXI , until I first got my hands on WoW at it's release.
One thing you fanbois never fail to do is make yourselves look like complete retards.

Indeed they aren't doing well, but you are agreeing with me that the combat is VERY similar, which was my point. Thanks for agreeing with me, I guess. I never complained about it being too similar, but to completely disregard that aspect when describing the game to somebody else is really borderline lying.
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.

I wont lie, Many of the classes do have similar styles with the assassin probably the closest to wow than any other, but its not to say the combat is all that similar. I mean, sure, if you look at it broadly it can/will be similar to almost all fantasy MMO's. Its what the entire genre is based on, your not getting away from that anytime soon. But having played many characters in wow and a couple to 60+ I dont feel that aions combat mimics wow to that degree and I have played several classes in aion as well. Its all about the nice subtle changes that are behind the scenes that make each MMO's systems more unique to themselves. I think your really thinking about this to broadly and frankly its going to make you hate all fantasy mmo's if you continue to try and scrutinize them to previous ones.
I'd say something about this thread being derailed, but I don't think it was on rails to begin with...
Just another "Aion is a WoW clone" Thread.
I could agree, or I could say "No it's not!"
Or I could just sit in my office chair and chuckle at the mayhem...
*You hear some quiet chuckling in the background....*
I'm just waiting for a F2P overhyped sandbox WoW clone with full PVP, epic raid bosses, instanced group content, and Crysis-quality graphics to come out. That, or something fun.
Originally posted by //\//\oo AO, RO, FFXI, WoW, EQ2, AoC, WAR, VG, many free to play games and of course EQ1 (although not for long, since I didn't enjoy it). Yeah, I know I can and I am also certain that I am qualified enough to tell you that you are a retard. What games have you played and what is your formal education for that matter?
RO?? You really didn't use Ragnarok Online as "experience" did you?? So does that mean I get to put Club Penguin which my son enjoys on my list as quality experience in MMO games? Seriously?
UO, EQ (only briefly), AC, DAoC, E&B (Yeah...I know..I'm not proud of it), SWG, FFXI, CoH, L2, WoW, GW, DDO, WAR, RoM, Aion. And I'm nearly willing to bet that was in chronological order. I guess that one up's you a little bit doesn' t it?
I have a Masters in Computer Sci too although I don't see wth that has to do with anything here.
Anytime you play in a big !@$# contest you always find that there is someone bigger than you. WoW was and is not the end all be all of the MMO franchise and while it had a good run, in many categories it is seriously outdated. So you can hold on to WoW all you want Gollum but the fact is that Aion improved upon an existing system, a system that WoW also improved upon when it first hit the scene but it didn't create that system or the genre.
Aion is an extremely well polished game and while I do have my irritations (seriously no swimming animation? I can fly but the hit an invisible barrier and have to walk between cities? I auto follow my targets?? Yeah pretty lame.) those irritations are dwarfed by the fact that Aion has some really good stuff from graphics, very nice character customization (mini characters are also lame though) to the chain combat system to aerial combat to immersive story lines with voice overs and cut scenes, etc. etc.
So as the previous poster said. If you want to promote WoW you have the link for the boards there. Stop trolling.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
I'd say something about this thread being derailed...
TBH I think the thread was pretty much derailed in the very first post. I read the OP lst night, noticed what a blatent and pretty rubbish trolling attempt it was, but felt a bit heartened that an hour or so had passed with no reply. Oh well...
They copied WoW so that they could get North American success.
You know, I bet you would say the same thing about just about any fantasy MMO to get released post WoW. I've seen people here even go as far as to accuse Guild Wars of being a "wow-clone". I'm sure if there was an EQIII made, that too would be accused of being a "wow-clone".
Aion does borrow from a lot of games (note* every game does this, WoW especially), but if it's a clone of anything, it'd be a clone of Lineage 2. But guess what, they made lineage 2. It's basically Lineage 2 meets perfect world, with an adopted RvR system and combo system. None of these are WoW's innovation. What they borrowed from WoW is controls (smoothness of movement), and a quest driven progression system. However, only one of these cannot be tied back to MMOs pre-WoW (hint* it's not questing)
Honestly, a game finally comes out that meets the complaints of the last few games to get released, and a lot of you complain anyway. I guess if you look hard enough there's always something you can find to complain about.

So, in other words, you have not proved that Aion combat is not similar to WoW combat and you listed F2P games (DDO, RoM) in your list, which I have also played, yet intentionally excluded in mine (also GW.. who hasn't played GW? it isn't a real MMORPG). I also played CoX, but didn't list it, as I hadn't played it for more than 2 months (beyond the character creation, I couldn't stomach more than lvl 22, or so) .
I had asked his education, because it's about as relevant as asking what other games I had played before that would not change whether or not Aion's combat had anything to do with WoW's; ironically he took it to heart and started acting worse than any poster on WoW's forums.
I've also a masters, so really you haven't trumped me in any way other than showing that you're incapable of proving me wrong.
Thanks.

Let me try this again so you can understand it. Everyone here already made the point that there are similarities and there are differences. No one needs to prove you wrong because your argument didn't hold any merit in the first place being that WoW itself stole previous ideas so therefore it's the pot calling the kettle black the only difference being that WoW is how many years older than Aion?? So if WoW was introducing a new spin on an old model and now it IS the old model, that means it's some pretty outdated stuff huh? Yeah Aion isn't recreating the wheel but if my choice is a set of racing low profile run flats or the old horse and carriage wheel that is WoW...that's a no brainer for me.

Don't even bother trying to convince the troll to understand. Just ignore his posts, he seems to try to prove a point that people already knows but wants everyone to actually say they agree with him or else he gets mad and flames and insults.
All games combats are similiar because it works, it has also worked before WoW so get over it. You get your hotbar with your hot keys and your different skills. You strategize using skills or you bash keys, how was this different from before or after WoW?
What are you exactly trying to prove here??? What is your problem??? What are you fighting so hard for???
They copied WoW so that they could get North American success.

On a side note, EQIII is supposedly in the works
See, here is the real problem with all the WoW IDIOTS. Now, these are the ones that WoW was their first MMO. They have no clue that pretty much all fantasy based mmo's have the same basic structures and classes and they are complaining because they think that the genre should change when in fact, it doesn't and hasn't and to be honest, probably never will. If it did, It would most likely be in a genre to itself. The part that I am finding funny is the ones that are coming in here and saying aion is nothing but a wow clone and then come back and say they have played all these other mmo's supposedly before WoW ever hit the market. If that was truely the case, then I think they are either A) simply trolling or simply Lieing. We could add a C) to that but do we really want to involve hot pokers and rotten apple cores? Nah, I didnt think so.
Let me state this up front. I played WoW, I liked WoW, it was entertaining to a certain degree so its not like I am a WoW basher. The problem is when these idiots want to relate everything to wow and bash it because its not something completely new and innovative. they are simply ignorant to how fantasy based MMO's have been in the past and unfortunately they can not comprehend that this genre really isn't going to change in any huge meaningful way so they have to try and vent their frustrations and bash anything that comes out. Who knows how long it will take them to finally comprehend that all they have done is made ass's of themselves for all these years, but by then it will be to late because they will never want to admit they were wrong, so they will probably just continue to make themselves look like idiots till time ceases or Gore realizes that he needs to remove the stupid people from those series of tubes.

mm he might say it the wrong way but i think i get what he try to say ,
in my view he means,if aion doesnt have a trump card and just release the game without any other incentive
we ll be exactly as we are now !the only difference will be in the name
instead of war it will be aion
kind of bad to release a game and see it end up like war
war is another good game but its not enough
GAME MAKER NEED TO REALISE A GOOD GAME ISNT GONA CUT I!

Uh huh...
Right.
Play priest, then cleric. Play warlock, then spiritmaster. Play rogue, then assassin....
Absolutely NO similarities there, I swear. Indeed.
With that stupid ass logic means your precious WoW carbon copied just about every MMO out before it. You see how this works?

Well you're a stupid ass: How many new games released AFTER WoW that didn't COPY it's combat almost entirely?
AoC and WAR . Their combat is less similar to WoW's than Aion's is.
You WoW-bashing halfwits really make this forum worthwhile.
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.

These kinds of arguments crack me up.
It's like looking at a Lexus or a Ford F350 and saying, "It has 4 wheels, brakes, a stearing wheel and an internal combustion engine.... ZOMG itz a Model T clone!"
Uhm yeah.

They copied WoW so that they could get North American success.
XD
TBH I think the thread was pretty much derailed in the very first post. I read the OP lst night, noticed what a blatent and pretty rubbish trolling attempt it was, but felt a bit heartened that an hour or so had passed with no reply. Oh well...
And they end up with 12 half filled servers in open Beta.
Play Ad&d at least it's free to play and that one HAS a western fantasy Lore we all used to love once.

Do you know how many players each server can hold?
Don't think so.
I dont get some ppl.
Gosh !

Thanks.
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.

I did not want to start a flame war I am simply just stating the facts and I'm not even wearing an asshat.

GAME MAKER NEED TO REALISE A GOOD GAME ISNT GONA CUT I!
they need a trump card
