I think from a monetized view, they already are leading the industry.. not only do they have every genre available, pioneers of the free to play method of payment. now we all know they have shitty ass mmo's too but it does fill a void, such as kart racing or some side scrolling oldschool game. but lets look at the high end of korean mmo's, with games like aion, tera online, blade and soul, and mabinogi heroes.. maybe even huxley. It seems like WOW is the only good mmo in the western market cuz every over hyped mmo that comes out of the west soon dies a painful death. cuz they suck ass.. korean mmos are just alot prettier, super hot chicks, just better overall design... All the new generation mmos in korea are now doing real time fighting which means twitch and actuall player skill, everything coming out of the west is stll the same old rpg style fighting, graphics still ugly ass hell and not evolving at all. sure u can say, all koreans games are grinders, but thats only because they like to grind, once they want a global market they can easily change that such as aion.. i have no doubt in my mind the west can't keep up with the creative level the koreans are displaying. our society only sees them as a game, korea its pretty much a cyber land.. its their way of life. Plus korean games just dont die as much as western games, they seem to have legs, even the shittiest games. Hey, OP. Every been to Korea? Didn't think so. One of the reasons Korea is "leading the way" in gaming in infastructure. Just a couple short years ago, Korea decided to make sure every home, college, dorm room, motel room, business, apartment, club, you name it... all of them were hooked up to the latest fibre optics available with WiFi to match. Here in the west, we still have people running on 56k modems or not connected at all. To compound the problem, state of the art computers in Korea sell for a fraction of a person's income there compared to the West. Combine that with the culture of the country toward gaming and you can see that gamers in Korea and the West are playing on two different playing fields. Once we close the basic gaps, then the developers can start closing the gap on the types of games they can make. AoC was a case in point, while it was made with latest in graphics and was twitch based, it was said that less than 10% of the mmorpg players in America had the recommended system specs to even play the game.
I HAVE
and NO...thay don't put Fiber to Dog farms, Rice paddies, Barber shops, Corner shop food on a stick location. Thay stick 2.5 B ppl in the size of Road-Island and the rest is farming land. 1 year there............. and glad to be home. If you would***************************************************************. The only thing for ppl to do their is farm and play online game over the WiFi. And yes thay do have WiFi along with alot of Cell covege. So move to Korea, buy your minants ,Play your F2P games and ***********************. Look at the price of land in Korea, and in the US. Small cars, small homes, small buildings and every inch of ground used for farming. Thay even burrie there dead sitting up and this helps save land space. Now do you remember Korea from the back of your mom and dads car or did you see it like all americans did?
Sorry for that. I like German, hated Korea

To the OP: Have you really looked at what the western companies have produced and will release in the next couple of years, the diversity of MMO's is huge, more so than what has come out of Korea, Japan or China combined.

100% agreed.
if we:
define industry = factory to produce normed, identical products then korea might be the true "industry" leader in mmorpgs !
with all the - excuse me - every time the same manga like looking asian f2p/p2p crap beeing tossed out in incredible numbers by a really BIG factory!
i did not mention the word quality here, this was intentional.

Also Vagrant story: That actually isn't true., MMORPGs are FAR more successful in the east than the west. Many western publishers would gladly trade their games for a game like Maple Story, Silkroad, Legend 2 and Westward Journey Online 2.
Quality is subjective to some extend and nobody here is really capable of having a good view of the asian market because guess what: A huge amount of asian games never make it here.
In terms of industry size, there is just no contest: MMORPGS have been far more successful in asia than they have in the west and the industry is simply much bigger.
I love how people keep pointing at Asian MMORPGS and say they all play the same.
Guess what: The vast majority of western mmorpgs have played the same since Everquest. Okay game A puts a bit more focus on PVP and the other puts a bit more focus on grouping but many share the same similarities: Travel through the world doing quests in a medieval fantasy setting,

But the free to play have a lower cost to them thus you can expect a lower quality. I don't think it's entirely fair to compare f2p to p2p games standards, when you compare the free asian games to the free western games, the asian market produces higher quality content. I'd rather play something like Silkroad, ArchLord, RF Online or Cabal then a Runescape, Tibia or Free Realms. I have to completely disagree about the monthly sub. Games like Final Fantasy XI, Ragnarok Online, Lineage 2 and recently Aion can go head to head with the best mmorpgs the west has to offer when they were released.
The way i see it is Western MMO's have originality, creativity, innovation while korean games more or so tend to copy some of those elements and turn them into grind games to suit there players, yes they might have good graphics and animation but gameplay wise western mmo's are leading it.
Are you kidding? Like what? Where?
I think Asian MMOs may just be behind the curve, as they still stick a little more closely to the EQ model, but as the genre matures, they'll probably be the first to start taking real chances on AAA MMOs that really are revolutionary. Here, we get these inadequate companies that don't have enough money, who sometimes start out with good ideas, but keep trying to change directions mid-development, and end up producing games that are not only less than half as original than they might have been if they'd stayed on track, but broken and unfinished, too.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
But the free to play have a lower cost to them thus you can expect a lower quality. Can you please name some western f2p in that list, also goodness sake I didn't think you could sink so low as to play something like Silkroad *shivers*
I kinda agree with your last sentence, keep in mind that IS the best games Asia has to offer. Some of those are p2p anyway.
Hi guys, I'm Korean and my uncle told me that back when Korea was having some financial crisis (IMF), thousands of Koreans lost their jobs and decided to play an MMORPG in hopes to make money. My uncle told me that during these tight money crunching times, that many Koreans were ashamed to explain to their families that they could not support them financially. As a result, many Koreans went to LAN cafes and PC centers to play a popular MMORPG which was Lineage. He explained that many Koreans did not care for the content or the story and only heard that if they were to get a really rare item, they would be able to sell it for a pretty penny. My uncle told me that many Koreans fled to PC cafes as a safe haven (told their families they were going to work) and grinded endlessly, even through nights in hopes of acquiring that uber rare sword in Lineage. He finishes up telling me that was how Lineage became huge in Korea and how it became a lifestyle in Korea (MMORPG and gaming). Believe it or not, but my uncle told me this with a straight face so I believe it. He told me that the idea of instantly receiving a lump sum of cash from the sales of virtual item drops was something that pushed everyone to grind and instill the addictive qualities in MMORPGs. The chance to make money off of it. I believe the trend has always stayed the same within the asian mmo market. While I do not agree with the concept, it does make sense.
But the free to play have a lower cost to them thus you can expect a lower quality. I did mention 3 western f2p mmorpgs in that list: Runescape, Tibia and Freerealms.
I'm not playing Silkroad, I said I'd rather play Silkroad than western free to play games as Runescape, Tibia and Freerealms.
Originally posted by Josher Originally posted by ladyattis In terms of narrative structure and content, yes I think the Asians have a more innovative mindset as they're not totally enveloped in the Post-Modern mindset. They're still chewing on the Enlightenment and even adding some important concepts to it centuries after the fact. In some ways, despite the flashiness of their games, they seem to want to ask serious questions with some of their titles that we here in the so-called "West" have forgotten or ignored entirely. And it seems games are an outlet for them on such issues.
Tentical creatures with phalic symbols and skimpy armor that resenbles thongs is SOOOO elightened and Post Modern=) That was a joke..... before some anime twearp blows a blood vessel and rage nerds all over the screen;)
Well the Korean market has a bazillion more gamers to cater to,so any game can and will have players.
WOW is not the only good mmo,i could argue it is not even that good, but the fact is that there is not that many gamers to go around for all the games over here, unlike Korea that could put a million gamers in to a game of Yahtzee.
Even the top of the line MMO;'s are quite weak game play, they are only a step up from the crap,in that they offer at least average graphics.Eq2 a game released quite awhile ago now, still has better graphics than ANY Korean MMO,so they are by no means advancing at all, they are stagnant running the same old crap over and over again, because they can get away with it over there.
Remember a game like Runescape kind of followed that type of Asian F2p junk and it had a large following over here, but is actually free or at least it was.
I might also add the Koreans did not implement a F2P ,because there is no such thing as FREE,over here we call it "Cash Shop" or "Item Mall" games.A game like Runescape was/is actually free.Even the original games like MU online were not free in that most common sense people realized they were running games that catered to RMT activity and were running most of those operations as well.
I played Lineage2 and i reported MANY cheat and bot /rmt activities and nothing was ever done, i always got some BS email back that gave me the run around,so you can bet even the giants like NCSOFT are every bit as crooked as the small Asian developers.
The thing that makes this article a fail ,is once again pointing to numbers, numbers do not and will NOT ever point to anything other than money,it has no bearing on the quality of the game. You want to talk quality of a game you have to talk about texture use, animations, meshes, models, particle system, shaders, lighting, net code, shadows, effects dam there is so much that gives actual meaning to the word "GOOD",and subscription numbers do not come into it at all.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
all korean games are the same? really? they are the first to do 2d sidescrolling mmo, kart riding, fps games and many more that are out of the box none fantasy mmo's...
western leading in gamplay and graphics??? the next big thing is suppose to be the new starwars.. it looks like crap, the gamplay isn't realtime.. all the next gen korean games have really good graphics and theyre all moving to console level action gameplay..
I'm always surprised to see people complain that females in games are too sexy, have thong armor.. and what not.. its fuckin fantasy. no wonder americans like ugly pieces of shit like runescape cuz they have the uglyiest models ever seen.. serioulsy.. complainging that the chicks are too scantaly.. either ur gay or some kinda feminist, lets put soccer moms in games to please these people. matter of fact lets just put ugly people in games, that will sell. sex sells shut up already.
this thread is suppose to be about next gen korean games.. so stop bringing up f2p 6 year old games.. in fact those f2p games are more successful then any western f2p and some p2p games.. thats a kick in the balls. obvioulsy their games appeal to us, because they do succeed here. its only u loud minority that complains. actually look how bad western free mmos are.. that pengin game, wizard 101 or some shit, habbo hotel.. all jokes
complaining about their art style, maybe u should go play something ugly like runescape cuz u people seem to like ugly in western games. its their culture and unique to them, and sure ass hell does appeal to westerners.. maybe they hate our style and say all we have are balled guys in fps games.. no creativity there.
western games attacks and weapons are often boring ass hell,
its like comics, westerners are stuck in the "superhero" genre, while manga is super diverse and for everyone.. theres no way in hell marvel could come up with naruto or deathnote..
the point is.. they have the bandwidth, they have the tech, and its a way of life for them.. and its only a game for kids to western people.. its only a matter of time b4 these next gen mmo's come over here and learned what aion did and changed it make it not a grinder..

When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
Can you please name some western f2p in that list, also goodness sake I didn't think you could sink so low as to play something like Silkroad *shivers*
I kinda agree with your last sentence, keep in mind that IS the best games Asia has to offer. Some of those are p2p anyway.
O_o o_O
Can anybody tell me what are the Top 5 Pay To Play Korean MMOs in Korea?
While I do not agree with the concept, it does make sense.
korean, japanese, asian, eastern win in art and sound effect. melee sound effect is top notch, hard and powerful that you can hear it and feel it.
blade and soul. mabinogi heroes. mabinogi. c9. berkanix. tera. aion. ff11. sun. requiem. reign of revoluton. lineage2. metin2.
Can you please name some western f2p in that list, also goodness sake I didn't think you could sink so low as to play something like Silkroad *shivers*

I did mention 3 western f2p mmorpgs in that list: Runescape, Tibia and Freerealms.
I'm not playing Silkroad, I said I'd rather play Silkroad than western free to play games as Runescape, Tibia and Freerealms.
That game really IS shudder-worthy. Too many Asian games are exactly like it for gameplay.
Tentical creatures with phalic symbols and skimpy armor that resenbles thongs is SOOOO elightened and Post Modern=)
That was a joke..... before some anime twearp blows a blood vessel and rage nerds all over the screen;)
OIC WUT U DID DER.
To be honest i believe that LOTRO is doing fine and Turbine is American. I Mean its not got 11 million subscribers but its doing very well
Maybe North Koreans play MMO's so they can at least eat virtual food.
I have never played a Korean F2P worth the time it took to download.
Mindless grinders do not appeal to me, nor many other US/EU players.
They might be fine for people that live in Asia, but since I don't, I don't care.
The title of this thread should be "Koreans leading the F2P Grinder industry".
time to address some of you:
all korean games are the same? really? they are the first to do 2d sidescrolling mmo, kart riding, fps games and many more that are out of the box none fantasy mmo's...
western leading in gamplay and graphics??? the next big thing is suppose to be the new starwars.. it looks like crap, the gamplay isn't realtime.. all the next gen korean games have really good graphics and theyre all moving to console level action gameplay..
I'm always surprised to see people complain that females in games are too sexy, have thong armor.. and what not.. its fuckin fantasy. no wonder americans like ugly pieces of shit like runescape cuz they have the uglyiest models ever seen.. serioulsy.. complainging that the chicks are too scantaly.. either ur gay or some kinda feminist, lets put soccer moms in games to please these people. matter of fact lets just put ugly people in games, that will sell. sex sells shut up already.
this thread is suppose to be about next gen korean games.. so stop bringing up f2p 6 year old games.. in fact those f2p games are more successful then any western f2p and some p2p games.. thats a kick in the balls. obvioulsy their games appeal to us, because they do succeed here. its only u loud minority that complains. actually look how bad western free mmos are.. that pengin game, wizard 101 or some shit, habbo hotel.. all jokes
complaining about their art style, maybe u should go play something ugly like runescape cuz u people seem to like ugly in western games. its their culture and unique to them, and sure ass hell does appeal to westerners.. maybe they hate our style and say all we have are balled guys in fps games.. no creativity there.
http://www.hardestlevel.com/707242081/western-character-design-bold-or-just-bald/
western games attacks and weapons are often boring ass hell,
its like comics, westerners are stuck in the "superhero" genre, while manga is super diverse and for everyone.. theres no way in hell marvel could come up with naruto or deathnote..
the point is.. they have the bandwidth, they have the tech, and its a way of life for them.. and its only a game for kids to western people.. its only a matter of time b4 these next gen mmo's come over here and learned what aion did and changed it make it not a grinder..
