Grind Much?

phupphup Member Posts: 20

I'm up to lvl 22 on one char and the thought of logging back in and grinding some more is making me feel a bit nauseated.  In fact, I'd rather watch Glee.  That's a pretty bad sign.

that is a pretty bad sign for you

I think all of my friends that play have been hoping on Gmod with me about every 3 hours (on the account I'm an MMOless bum at the moment). And they say the grind just makes the game something you can only do for so long. So you might not be the only one.

You will play Aion, you will grind in Aion, and you will like it. Now off you go.

I havent met an MMO without a "grind" in it in some form or another -- and I started playing them in '99.  My advice to you, is if you dont like the "grind" then MMOs might not be your cup of tea.  Try a console or play some FPS, RTS, single player RPGs -- heck go outside and get some excercise -- but forget about MMOs -- its not your thing dude.

  • phupphup Member Posts: 20

I've been playing them since Ultima Online came out although I don't know what year that was.  And in the sense that you have to "do things" and often very similar repetitive things to "advance", I agree that almost all of them had a grind.  I guess what makes them "fun" at least for me is the ability to disguise that grind and provide interesting things to do so that it's not so painfully obvious that you are grinding.  In that regard, Aion so far is an utter failure.  Maybe it gets less horrible once PVP starts.

I would say being level 22 is very good for how long the game has been out. Relax and just have fun with the game. If your just none stop grinding to hit max level, then of course its gona feel like a grind.

Someone kills 100 monsters and calls it a grind. You put a quest with a stupid story in front of that same person with the same objective and all of a sudden it's not a grind. I love the way people think, because that's exactly pretty much all these "grind" posts come down to. Try killing monsters while gathering and not just running from quest to quest avoiding everything. You might notice a difference.

I'm not arguing that you have to kill a lot of mobs to level up in other games, (although the number you have to kill is growing exponentially in Aion).  I'm just saying it's possible to make the quests that send you out to kill those mobs marginally interesting.  And it's possible to make those mobs have some personality and or put them in an environment or layout that promotes game play with some actual thought.  Aion does none of those things (so far).

My essence gathering is 111, so I am just about able to do all the gathering quests still for my level.  I have 2 crafting (alchemy and food) over 50 and my fly around and click on rocks gathering is at 53 (is there anything more tedious than gathering aether? i submit the answer is no, but let's not get started on the atrocity that is Aion crafting).  So I have taken time to do the watching 2 bars race stuff.  It doesn't make it less of a grind.

Most of the quests that are "doable" at my level now are just repeatable please go kill 10 more frillneck type quests.

And it's not just the grind... it's the fact that the grind is encouraged / required by the game design.  Trying to fight mobs above your level or take on more than one at a time or do anything fun or challenging is so punative in this game.  In the form of either money spent on xp recovery if you die, or pots / odella.  Or worse, having to sit down and twiddle your thumbs in between fights to recover hp/mana... it's practically forcing you to just fight one mob at a time your level or one level lower ad nauseum.  I have reached the nauseum at 22.

You say all these grinding posts are the same, but my opinion of this game (again, so far with no pvp yet) is that you are fooling yourself if you think all grinding is equal and there aren't better more fun ways to grind than the Aion grind.

    hi guys!

this post failed and i think it should be "locked" to prevent any further meaningless discussion arguement!

1st fail:  Topic started with a personal perception without providing any single solid supporting information for discussion.

2nd fail:  this is a wrong thread.  why? b/c this is forum for "general discussion,"  and not "forum for dummies."

This thread did not helped anyone so far.  readers find themselves mad for spent their time to read something this stupid.   people who replies with their own personal perception that contrast to his thinking already/will be get flame.  to fix the lack foundation for the discussion? its too unnecessary!  In the end, a topic started by a guy who is bored and wanted something to do.

any further reading will lead you from "now.here" to "no.where".

um did you go into the lvl 20 zones yet? there is PvP and quests waiting for you there.

  • MirrandorMirrandor Member UncommonPosts: 55

Are you level 22 and still sitting in the area you went to when you ascended?

There's tons of quests that open up at 20 (for the Elyos in Theobomos AND Eltnen. Asmodians have Morheim and ... ... I forget)

Not to mention the SPY quests that have you rift jumping and either killing players or doing quests that require you to be in the opponent's zone.

I'm not trying to be a fanboy or anything, but I am about to enter the Abyss (damn queues holding me back) and I haven't actually grinded on mobs at all. It's been quests all the way.

If by grind you mean quest grind, then yeah, it's a quest grind game. Aside from mob grinding only games, is there another type that I'm not aware of?

poisonIV wants valid arguments.. Ok.. so lets see. I'll talk with numbers here.

I'm playing Asmo side and these are the 20 level quests available in Morheim. They are 7 in number

    1)Bringing up Tayga 20

    Req 20 Morheim

    Asmodians 30000XP, 1100

    2)Firewood for Cooking 20

    Req 19 Morheim

    Asmodians 18000XP, 2500

    3)Titanium Tribute 20

    Req 19 Morheim

    Asmodians 24000XP, 3750

    4)Morheim Commander's Call 20

    Req 19 Morheim

    Asmodians 10000XP

    5)Frenai's Lost Jewelry 20

    Req 19 Morheim

    Asmodians 42000XP, 1100

    6)Keindor's Message 20

    Req 19 Morheim

    Asmodians 60000XP, 4800

7)[Spy] Liquor that Makes You Vanish 20

    Req 19 Morheim

    Asmodians 80000XP, 2400

Now.. i played Age of Conan and Warhammer..and there was  grinding in some cases but man.. 7 quests for a whole level?  It's max 264k xp if i m counting well with the eye plus 200k from killing mobs and u need 1 million. Of course there are 21-22 level quests available but even if u do them u still have to grind and when u hit 21 things will get worse. If you go to Brusthonin u can do a couple of 21 level quests one with low xp and the other is with okish. Now in all the recent mmo games i have played u could do higher level quests but that was OPTIONAL.

I can accept the opinion of someone who says if u don't like grinding stop playing Aion ( not MMO games in general cause this farming is for me outdated in modern mmo games like Warhammer and Age of conan -at least aoc as it is now-)  but hell.. don't tell me that there is no grinding. YES there is. IF, i'm missing another area of 20 level quests plz let me know and i have no problem to check it out  and see if things change. Also if someone can prove to me that quests scale so good later on that even if i do ALL the higher level quest i won't have to grind millions of xp at 23-24 and so on i ll be glad as well.

p.s Sorry for my poor English but it's not my native language.

Interesting posts - if been playing aion aswel and im lvl 17 now. Got a lvl 20 char in closed beta, and sofar if yet to really find a true grind.  Anybody here ever do Fin Liads grinding from 46 to 50 in dark age of camelot (hibernia) ?  If so far managed to have quest left over from previous levels all the time. Mabey because i kill more while walking because i just enjoy the job of slaying little monsters..

Then again i dont agree with the post that mmo;s should have to be grindie. Go look at guildwars, it gives you lvl 1 to 20 in what... 1 day? Then after that ALL the content is for lvl 20 ... but it gets harder and some missions are just damn near impossible. Perhaps if you havent, you should try that out?

woot 1 less person in the queue

the thought of loggin off makes me shutter, there is so much to do in such little time.  even my guildies with families are putting in extra hours, can't wait 4 the rest of them to hit the abyss.

that would be an example of a good sign.

It took you how much? Three days? And you almost reached the middle level. Lets say that it takes you another two weeks to reach level 50, which is the maximum. Do you really call that a grind, when under the current speed you'll level in less than a month with the first character of a game you know little to nothing about?

Don't you think you're levelling a bit too fast?

  • aleosaleos Member UncommonPosts: 1,943

maybe you should hire someone to play for you considering..

On another note, it seems that the fastest levelling server in EU is Spatalos.

Man.. grinding isn't only about how long it takes to reach the level cap. Grind is when quests are not enough to give u a level and u have to kill kill kill mobs in order to achieve it.  Grind it's still grind but u can sugar it up a bit. Take Failhammer for example. Scenarios did the work.

For those who played the Korean version, you must know that from lvl 1 to 25, everything goes smoothly, but there are like 3 gaps in the game, with grind heavy parts, which if I recall correctly are 30, 40, and 46-50...

So, if you think you're already grinding around lvl 20, imagine what it'd be like at lvl 45...

    Listen to this guy,

The main reason i play MMO's is because i enjoy others company,  raids, PvP, talking on vent & grinding.

Go play Darkfall for a week.  You will then see what a grind really is.
