I have symapthy for those that attach their name to an mmo . Its a riskey buisness but for my money its Richard Garriott for the Tabula Rasa mess . My perception is he let personal ambition overtake his roll in the success or faliure of Tabuala Rasa . or maybe Gaute Godager who compared Age of Conan as steak to Warcrafts burger yet unless than two years later he has left blaming others for the way the game has gone while he was the man in charge .

Three letters - SOE
But who in SOE is to blame . i ment an individual not a company .
NCsoft.
The mastermind of Warhammer Online should be named here.
Why couldn't they just make a DAOC2??? Seriously!
Until Mythic produces another DAOC, they will be on my shit-list.

$OE- Thats all- If it says $OE just run, dont even bother reading the "features" of the game.
I liked Tabula Rasa, had a lot of fun in it despite the problems, and was sorry to see it go.
For me, it's Bill Roper. Screwed a lot of people (including me) out of a lifetime HG:L membership, screwed up Mythos, f*cked over an entire company of dedicated and talented people, and just overall doesn't have a clue as to what he is doing. I'd probably have tried CO if his stench weren't all over it. Oh well, I'm sure he'll convince Cryptic to bargain away the IP to a bunch of koreans, seems to be par for the course with him.
I hate that man with the flames of a billion internets.

Think I have to go with ncsoft. Its not a bad company, but 3 games over the years and all 3 left my harddrive after 2 weeks. They just dont have games I like, so they are on the short list of never buy again.
Blizzard !
They took a hip, counter culture, trendy, big city, sexy game genre.... and turned it into an overweight, suburbs, soccermom, minivan, daycare , babysitter got knocked up again ..... rerun on TV.
Okay, as much as I hate $OE- you have very eloquently explained to me in simple yet precise terms why I should hate Blizz even MORE. You Sir, have shown me the error of my ways and I stand humbly corrected.
I change my vote from $OE to Blizz for the aforementioned reasons.
Mythic's name shouldn't belong in this conversation. War wasn't perfect, or maybe not even great, but it's not like it was a scam or just atrocious. They deserve another chance.
If you say Blizzard you're just a mindless hate-boy. By any objective (look that word up if you don't know what it means) measurement they are excellent developers.
NCsoft I could agree with, they've screwed over some good games.
SOE made a mistake changing SWG so much, but they can still do good. Free Realms, for what it is, is a good game.
Really the worst is probably NP Cube (Dark and Light).
SOE. In truth, people should be very suspect of anyone involved with the NGE and has subsequently moved on to important, influential roles in other companies. Namely Bioware with TOR and in particular Richard Vogel and Walton (his first name escapes me at this moment). These guys were buddy buddy with Smedley for a long while and unless you were a fan of the NGE, well, think long and hard about giving them a second chance. Yes, there a re more than a few Bioware originals working on this, but they don't hold the status and positions that these two do, which ultimately means thsoe Bioware originals get told what they can / can't do by 2 NGE super Smedley soldiers.

You do realize Richard Vogel has been working on games since the original sega console, as well as MMO's since Meridian 59 right? Before moving on as a senior producer for UO (when it was still in origin's hands)? He was an original dev for SWG as well as JTL.
Edit- The guy has the credentials to be where he is IMO.

I wouldve said war but atleast those guys admitted to there mistakes and are still trying to fix things, i guess SOE does take the cake.
Im sorry to flame here but I dont think the MMORPG genre has every been "hip, counter culture, trendy, big city [WTF?] sexy". I realize your from Taiwan so anything on that shiny box we call a computer probably seems hip but in reality this genre, which started in the US, was created by D&D fantasy nerds (nothing wrong with being a D&D nerd) who wanted to expand upon MUDs.
INFACT, World of Warcraft is the closest thing that could be considered a "hip" and "trendy" mmorpg since so many people have played it. Not that it IS "hip" or "trendy" (although you dont see Ozzy Osbourne nor Jay Mohr performing at Ever Quest conventions) but it definitely is far more hip and trendy then other mmos.

I approve this message.
Yeah I have to go with SOE as the house I run from at the slightest reason. It's easy and fun to hate on Blizz, and I do, daily, but I'm still looking forward to see what their next MMO will be. One name that surprises me that hasn't come up directly is EA, but that may be just my old UO hate coming to the surface.
Played in some form:
UO til tram, AC, EQ, AO, WW2O, PS, SB, CoH, AC2, Hor, LoTRO, DDO, AoC, Aion, CO, STO
Playing: WoW (for gf), WAR
Waiting For: SWTOR, FFXVI
Hoping For: DCUO, Secret World, Earthrise

In my opinion I don't like the way he approaches his job. I've read interviews of how his thoughts on certain aspects of gameplay that interest me (with respect to TOR) as well as reading a very lengthy panel transcript of Gordon Walton's approach to game design.
Don't confuse me with your average mmo gamer that spouts off they don't like this or that depending on which way the wind is blowing on a given day. I use the internet to look up the histories of these guys before I speak any ills of them. The fact that he, last year in 2008, was making comments that clearly were in line with a philosphy that married up with the NGE when discussing TOR lets me know that he really didn't disapprove of the NGE and that he's now getting to put some of those elements in at the start. And Walton...heh... he might as well be working at Blizzard on WoW.
Now, don't get me wrong, it's their damn game. I won't sit here and say every game has to be made for me. That's not realistic. That said, I don't have to like their direction, speak glowingly of them at all (or any) times or buy said damn game. That's reality.
Hitler was a darn good foot soldier in World War I and then went on to do what he did in World War II. People change. Sometimes they start out good and then turn bad. *shrug* Of course, I'm not saying Vogel is Adolph (only a moron would literally draw that conclusion from my example), just illustrating that just because someone or something is good in the past doesn't mean it stays that way forever.

Oh i hate EA with passion for ruining all my favourites but i wasnt here when UO was around and since this is on MMO's i didnt call on em but im pretty we can all agree console wise EA is the worst.
SOE SOE SOE
EQ2, PS, SWG, VG
They all had the potential to be great games...
I agree. SOE is the worst of the worst.
Complicated answer really....first off I'd assume we're limiting this to companies that have actually published a 3d, subscription-based, actual MMORPG in the western market right? Because otherwise a long list of Asian and 2d/browser-crap game publishers trump anything so far on this thread.
Given that, I'd have to say that FunCom heads my list of people who should be shunned for eternity. Although I admit it is a very close call between them, SOE and anything involving Richard Garriott. (With NCSoft, Cryptic and AV getting dis-honorable mentions)

Yes you have the McDonalds of MMO's. Over 4 billion served...still tastes like crap.
