Add DA's Cutscenes to ES:O's gamyplay, and then I could see it as a good game, where the action makes up for the long Cutscenes. But thats not the case here IN MY OPINION.
Come on, link some videos of DA's combat. Let the new comers see for theMselVES what I mean.
Once again I will say this, Rent the game before you buy it. Dot buy into Hype till you try it.
I am a RPG fan, and figured that since the game was being Hyped up so much, that it must be an Awesome game. (Damn, this coming from a guy who plays MMORPGs. feel for hype)
Damn the advertisment got me. I though the combat was going to rock.
So I brought it, since I wanted more RPGs to play. Played it, and BOOM, combat was dull at best IN MY OPINION. This games feels like what Lord of the Ring Conquest should have been, or something along those lines IN MY OPINION.
To me the combat seemed to easy once you know how to use the pauze button and the right spells.
All those so called great RPG elements were. in my opinion, not that great. The story was good but not as good as previous Bioware titles. It was quite clear from early on what was gonna happen, and all the side quests appart from a few companion quests were just as bad as the side quests in Mass Effect. And then the awsome dialog options, I barely noticed any influence from all the different options. You could get a few - or + points to your companions and the ending would change a little.
What I did realy like in DA:O was Orzammar and the Deep Roads, the look and feel there and how you find out where those Darkspawn come from was great. Romancing Leliana was something nice to do on those lonely nights in my base camp but this doesn't make the game so great that it's worth a 9.5 imo.
Overal it was an ok game, but I don't understand why people think this game is such an awsome game of the year game

Interestingly enough I agree with this whole statement.
The big flaw I had was expecting a fully voiced main character, that sort of made the dialogue a little more boring as all the speaking was one sided, so it felt like the entire time it just lacked the passion/feeling during intense dialogue moments. That for me was the biggest flaw I had with it, it just lacked that extra intense feeling from a voiced character.
The story was alright it was better then most new rpgs out now days because most games lack character development which is essential in a good story. You don't read a novel from cover to cover and expect the characters never to change heart, if you did well its a shitty novel. So a Bioware game always has growing characters, but even still some of them felt a little too flat for my tastes, again something just felt like it was missing during the dialogues...that and the fact that morrgan had to put on clothing to have sex...kinda made it more hilarious.
The combat for me was a downer, I played a rogue and it just felt like battles on normal happened too quick for me to actually do anything, since most of my abilities required backstabs...which at least for me wasn't the easiest thing to do, since the AI either did too much damage and killed it, or didn't build enough aggro. I felt the combat was a little too slow for my taste which lacked the thrill of the real fight, less about movement more about abilities. I feel Mass Effect got it right, but its guns...so I guess this is sorta how it had to happen in a fantasy game with a slower clunkier fight. Though the managing of rts units wasn't bad...just wish I got more control over them.
Overall I don't agree that its worth a high rating like that, but I do agree its fairly good and deserves at least a 7
By the way I'm not sure what era you people grew up in but cutscenes being a problem? You're showing your age to be a little kid. If you're quoting playstation games then man there could not be enough story...I mean what I wouldn't give to have longer scenes in Suikoden II. Just take a look at games like Star Ocean [Huge cutscenes/party scenes since there are just so many.] Lunar [More cutscenes, though voiced, then tons of dialogue.] Suikoden and Suikoden II had a bunch of it, literally if you were given extra dialogue for all of that, it would be like a nerdgasm all over the place. Getting a better insight into the world is bad how? You feel like you're watching a movie? Okay...and? How else do you make a world more immersive if not by story/character development? Please give me your tips and tricks...and I'll add them into my next D&D game promise.
You prefer that the world didn't exist..and you just attacked meaningless pixels for hours on end? I would prefer tons of dialogue to learn as much as I could about the story, which also makes the game longer. However if you liked action and not huge story...I guess that means dynasty warriors has huge amounts of replay value, since learning about the world doesn't matter...just the action? So I guess that's good. I don't mean this as an attack, but its just silly to complain about being given too much content.
keep in mind that in both of these the player was a mage/healer for the party. Your mileage may vary. I played melee so was right in the thick of things.
And as I've said, there are other examples that I have posted.
What you don't want to get is that this is a party based game. Not a "control one avatar" game.
However, I played on easy so I could mimimize pauses. bioware even indicates that this is a good option for those who want a more seamless combat experience.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
I thought it was a very good story driven rpg. Liked it so much I beat it 4 times and have unlocked all achievements. Seeing the cutscenes over and over got a little annoying but I liked playing through with different parties just to listen to them bicker back and forth.
Well im a bioware fun,i loved Baldur's gate 1,loved BG2 , liked nwn 1 but for some reason after playing 45 mins Dragon Age i quitted. Probably best animations in combat from a medieval rpg theme game, i liked the blood on the armours faces etc, the cutscenes were nice, but something made me get bored with the game. Maybe its the fact that its Linear. Maybe its the fact that you know that the characters cant die but only get unconcious in battles which deletes any intrest of carefull and tactical gameplay from the battles making you just zerg battles without great care which makes a game boring (Some will say that the characters in your party are essential for the scenario progress, but thats just a stupid excuse and a major mistake of the devs, cause in baldur's gate series for example all characters u had in party had their stories to offer in the game but they could die any minute in battles if u werent be carefull). I dont know. All i know is that for one more time i played an Rpg that it gave me the impression that it was made for 12 y old kids that want to zerg easilly all battles and finish the game fast.
If your party dies, you have to reload. I can think of scarce few games where you die once, and it's over. You say in baldurs gate, that if someone in your party died, they stay dead. What if you died? Did the story end, or did you have to reload? You can
******************* SPOILER******************
Kill some of your group mates, or send them away for good. Huh. That sounds nothing like what you mentioned.
And maybe I am terrible, but the game is NOT easy on hard, and I'm sure nightmare would be very hard. On normal I still died, wiped a number of times, but not a lot. I could tell from the way hard is starting, that more than just spam attacks to win, will be needed to beat things.
To me, this is a great game. I wasn't worried about hype, or what you thought of it, or what 1908374741043 others did. I enjoyed previous Bioware games. This looked interesting. I formed my own opinion based on facts I knew. I bought the game, I played it. I love it. I don't love it because some fanbois said so. Also, viewing someones previous posts helps me decide if they have any sort of gray matter between their ears, or if they just need to fall off a high cliff or two in regards to the contents of their posts.
you really need to approach this game as if you're watching an interactive movie. there is tons of story and really cool lore that just immerses you into the game.
admittedly the combat is a bit lackluster, but this game isn't about combat, it's about being a part of fantasy world and making decisions that affect the game in an extreme way.
ever watch a movie and yell at the main character for making a stupid decision that puts him in a stupid predicament. well, you're watching a video game and making decisions as the main character that change how the story plays out.
The most fun I am having with this game is the dialogue, trying to figure out the best way to manipulate people and situations to my benefit.
And my god, I love playing a Rogue. stupid traps. and coercion is just absolutely awesome for persuading people to do the right (or wrong) thing,
in my opinion, this is the best single-player RPG of all time, and I think it is going to give Diablo 3 a run for its money. i've already played the whole way through with a dwarf warrior, now i'm on my second way through as a human rogue, and loving it even more than my first time through. it's awesome, if you like in-depth story and tactics.
oh, and there is actually challenge to the combat. combat tactics make all the difference. choosing the right tank and the right supporting classes before a big battle will make all the difference. really, you need to slow down and enjoy the ride, because it's a wonderful game if ease into it like you're watching an interactive movie.
You can't use the tools if you don't know they exist... http://www.ic3.gov - Internet Crime Complaint Center - Report cyber crimes to the FBI.
Pretty damned late to be saying this about DA. Did you just get it for xmas or something? Most people who like the Single Player experience liked this game. So I guess if your a MMO player it mite be a be tad underwhelming. Overall I liked it though.
No I wasnt looking for a MMO feel. I just wanted a nice RPG. Iam bored of WoW atm, so I wanted to play a good single player RPG.
This game just plain old sucks.
The Combat is lame. I want Hack n Slash, not sum stupid auto Attack/Move crap.
The game feels like Guild Wars' PvE if it had been made Offline based.
The Cut Scenes are just too much!! I want to fight, not spend 10mins of watching blood stained characters talk to one another. I spend more time in Scenes in this game, then I do in Combat.
Also the Loading, makes this feel even Worst!!!!!!!!! Too Damn Slow!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn, you know a game has problems, when you have to debate between play it, or Demon Soul.
This game just plain suck arse
hehe how true!
try Risen if you are looking for a nice offlne rpg. it is 1000 times better then dragon age ....

I really really hope for the sake of all of humanity that you are indeed a troll.
Oh so iam a Troll, because I disagree on your opinion that DA is a great game?
Thats a New Low
No I think it was because umm oh yeah your name is tro44_1! Even you admit in your name your a troll, and it appears you are Basically just here attention whoring, as you continue to state misinformation like "theres no way to skip cutscences" even when several players have stated there are.
So DA isn't your cup of tea. Big deal, for many many thousands of players however its great. Your limited view / opinion is just that and someday youy'll understand that some people (or in this case by DA selling numbers a majority of people) like things that you don't. I'm guessing your more of one of those G4 people that thinks Supermario/sonic is the best RPG of the year. <Shrug> there is room for different opinions. Play what you like but don't think your way is the only, or correct opinion as simply put it isn't.
Da is quite a feat in it's limited fashions indeed! You can definatly loose yourself in this title for many many... days. Quite an acomplishment in a numerous way as far as a non mmo is concerned.
BIOWARE RULES!!! (if you doubt or disagree then well just get "another" life --

Well, I do get some flashbacks from "I don't like Wow (or any other MMO) so therefor it is a badly made crap game.
Some games are badly made crap games, that is true. Many bugs and a story that makes no sense whatsoever is typical for those games, as well as some classes or so imbalanced that you can't play them, all speccs but one are useless and e few other moronic things. Broken features is the thing that makes a game to a crap one.
But saying that a game is crap just because you don't like it is not particularly smart.
Patience is key in DA:O , many encounters demands though and planning and using the tactics panels help greatly very few times are you ganna encounter single enemies Bioware made sure of that you are always overwhelmed by enemies.
Am still playing through the game taking my time between work and my gaming time and i think the game is of the best rpg's i have played in a long time and bioware always keep choiceand consequence in mind and cant wait for that to continue in mass effect2 . the major problem with DA;O with alot of players they find the game too damn hard so go on the DA forums and you will understand . Am happy with the challenge , mmo's nowdays dont have any chalenges only silly grinds and timesinks. To the OP how you can compare the game to Guildwars is beyond me .
They both use the Hero system, where you controll a party of NPC. But least in GW the gameplay is more fun and interesting.
The WoWs I want it now crowd is HILARIOUS!
Are you REALLY comparing DA:O to GW, I mean, really? GWs companions are lifeless, they're disposable teammates. DA:O revolves around getting to know your companions, did you know you can lose them for good? Troll, it's very apparent you have not played DA:O. Watching youtube videos wont convince anybody you played the game. Your parents really need to limit your internet usage.
Edit: Whoever suggested Risen, yes Troll play Risen, it lacks depth and interest, the click fest combat will keep you happy. It's one of the only games I know of that masqueraded as a RPG which was uninstalled after 2 hours of me trying to play it because it was boring and senseless. You will enjoy it.
Dragon Age is a very good game. It has excellent dialogue and characters and a good, realized world.
I actually got chills when I was in the deep roads and that mad woman started chanting her song of how the darkspawn corrupts people. Good times.
Not to sound like a dick, but the naysayer sounds like an ADHD riddled preteen. "I don't want cutscenes and dialogue and character interaction!". Then why the hell are you playing an RPG?
DA:O is basically an interactive book with multiple outcomes that you, the player, can influence. What it tries to do (immerse story telling) it does pretty good. The combat - well, matter of opinion. But playing it on 'easy' without having to pause every 5 secs makes it so much more enjoyable, I think.
OP, if you don't like the game, move on and don't troll the forums. Seriously though, I take it you've obviously not played other Bioware games (or much RPGs for that matter) and so you brought the dissapointment on to yourself by expecting MMO and hack'n'slash elements . Bioware games traditionally have a deep focus on storyline and plot so cutscenes are vital (and for the record, you can skip them.) Also, they've a more tatical approach to combat and require some strategy. With your expectations, you're probably better off with something like borderlands - little plot, little attention span needed, shoot anything.
This game is very boring!! Damn the cut scenes are just crazy annoying. Damn and we cant even skip them. The game is just too damn slow. Tired of having to keep saving, just so I dont have to go through and repeat scenes if ya get killed.
Yeah I bought it when it first came out played through about 90% of the game then the first patch was released.
That patch destroyed the game wiping the DLC I had from being able to be used plus high level items completely gone.
Tech support never responded, devs never addressed it and tried ignoring it. Uninstalled and shelved the game, worthless.
Some other tidbit facts about DA:
1. Very linear game world, the only exception was the different intros and begining locations based on race and class you select.
2. Sad but true DA is a very bland gameplay experience, (in other words doesn't feel like you have enough enemies to fight, gameworld is linear not open world play say like Elder Scrolls and such, spend more time watching cutscenes), cut scenes and storytelling however were topnotch
3. Wait for the modding community to pump out some killer MoDs to make this title what it should of been.
i started the game on hard mode right away , and i guess that was why i could fully enjoy the game . Im sure the game expirience would have been more negative and disappointing if id play it on normal mode.
Sidenote : i couldnt bring myself to make another playthrough ...like some ppl that are already on their 5th. Overall imo it was better than Oblivion / but not as good as BG or Morrowind.
I dont even want to talk about it any more. Because if this what people are calling a top RPG, then this is making me not want to play my PS3 anymore.
LOL! Ooo you want a good RPG for your lovely PS3 and you got Dragon Age: Origins?! XDXD You should get Demon Soul's and then got the PC version of Dragon Age: Origins...

I am a deff Bioware fan and DA O in MY OPINION is a damn good game.
I have not even finished it yet, but am just taking it slow discovering all the things I can find, trying diff classes and builds and oh MODS for it
I might suggest to the OP to check out dragonagenexus.com and look up the Cleric class mod someone made for the game.
It is done quite well although a bit OP at the start (if playing on easy) the class still has a good feeling of what a cleric should be in my opinion.
either way it is a Bioware game just as NWN, NWN2, KOTOR, all of which I still play and enjoy.
I already did Tro. In this thread no less.

Da is quite a feat in it's limited fashions indeed! You can definatly loose yourself in this title for many many... days. Quite an acomplishment in a numerous way as far as a non mmo is concerned.
BIOWARE RULES!!! (if you doubt or disagree then well just get "another" life --
Peace is a lie..There can only be WAR muhahahah..
While I don't agree the game is boring
The game has too many major flaws for me to enjoy it.
Ie, insta healing immortal party members.
Did you try in on the hardest setting?
Well, I do get some flashbacks from "I don't like Wow (or any other MMO) so therefor it is a badly made crap game.
Some games are badly made crap games, that is true. Many bugs and a story that makes no sense whatsoever is typical for those games, as well as some classes or so imbalanced that you can't play them, all speccs but one are useless and e few other moronic things. Broken features is the thing that makes a game to a crap one.
But saying that a game is crap just because you don't like it is not particularly smart.
Short attention span much?
DA:O is basically an interactive book with multiple outcomes that you, the player, can influence. What it tries to do (immerse story telling) it does pretty good. The combat - well, matter of opinion. But playing it on 'easy' without having to pause every 5 secs makes it so much more enjoyable, I think.
Opinion pvp over DAO. Awesome , i wonder who gets pwnd-.-
OP, if you don't like the game, move on and don't troll the forums.
I hope SoE and Ubisoft will do games like Baldurs gate dark alliance 2 and Champions of norrath return to arms...those were awesome!
