What a waste of a great licence, I wish Cryptic had never got this licence, they have totally messed it up and on top of that they charge you £8.99 a month and a further £ to respec, £ to buy extra character slots (you only get 2 with the game) they also sell you armour and guns for cash too. :S
The game is terrible, you can fly into planets and just bouce off them oh and don't even think of beaming down to them, you can only do that to a select few. It's very linear and lacks any proper exploration and even when u do beam down to a planet they are all lifless dumps, not one planet has any wildlife on that I have seen and I have been on loads.
The textures in the bases are so bland, it's like when u get a game editor and just tile any old crap to the walls while u make your level, well it's like that everywhere.
Space combat is good, I really like that but after a while it just gets boring, you do the same thing over and over, know out shields with phazers and then torpedo their hull.
Ground combat is terrible, I don't even want to talk about it.
Sounds are great, really great. Graphics are ok.
The lack of any world pvp is a joke, ST is all about wars with Romulans or Kilngons but apparently not in this game, unless you call instanced battlegrounds pvp.

LOTRO was and still is a solid MMO. You just have to make it out of Archet to realize it
agree 100 % , i want to know who is the mastermind behind this? it is boring , and............... and can go on and on , this game shouldnt even be named star trek , what a joke .
Ya, you made a mistake relating it to LotRO, which in my opinion was not a disappointment, and was simply "meh".

Yup Pretty much.
The MMO genre died after 2004.
I think LotRO did great with the IP and the immersion. I actually feel like I'm playing in Middle Earth. I think this post is really just an attempt at being a troll.
LoTR is a really good game and so is STO. I think there just no pleasing the OP. Maybe he should just go back to his single player console games.
The space combat in the game is fun as hell, the ground combat is ok.
PVP = player vs player, in bg's its players vs players. I'm really glad they took the bg approach because it ensures more competitive play, rather than relying on a bigger zerg, or ganking someone who is a beginner. If open pvp is what you're looking for perhaps you should try EVE?
I wasn't expecting the world from this game but i'm having a lot of fun as of right now. Coming from playing a lot of duds since I got bored of WoW (like Vanguard, WAR, AION, AoC). I actually feel like i'm playing an mmo with a new feeling rather than some WoW clone.
You should probably cancel your STO pre-order, why did you even pre-order when you knew it was bg pvp?

Like I said " You had to have made it out of the newb zone to realize it"
And for it being a WOW clone? Give me a break. I play WOW and can with a straight face say most of the good ideas(and the bad ones) in WOW were taken from other MMOs. Thats why people love the game so much. It's so easy even a caveman can do it.
Considering that LOTR has a nice sized population then I'd say that I don't mind STO following their supposed "failure."

Welcome to your first post, my Cambodian brohan. Think you might have wasted it.
Huh? Wha happen?

Sorry, but I really don't think LOTRO is a fair comparision. LOTRO isnt the best that was ever made, but it is a very decend game and lightyears away from anything STO can EVER be.

LOTRO has been out for a long time now. STO is still in beta. No way to judge how it will turn out.
Actually, LOTRO is a very solid game. STO is a rushed, CO mod.
Lotro is still one of the higher ranked games in the community. A lot of the STO previews all mention it's fun, and I know I certainly enjoy it.

Cryptic aquired the license from Perpetual and then proceded to...add their unique flair to it.
Jam is sticky.
One thing unique that Cryptic added was actually making a game.

Yes. instanced pvp is real pvp... just like baseball, NBA, NFL and such... there is some area, some players and such...
Open world PVP is a mess from the very start, turns to be two big turtleshells... ), also lots of frame rate drops, unresponsive controls, (kick ass computer can alleviate that) and in general is a mess that easily anyone can lose their orientation it more like a madness, not even cool, example of a game that only try world pvp, and i consider it a failure is AION... that world pvp is a mess... is horrible at best
World pvp can be cool, if they add a sense of control, dunno how, or maybe world pvp can be better, and AION is a terrible execution of world pvp, because is more like fortresses turtles at maddening proportions, nothing like the original trailers...
WAR had battlegrounds, but in such a way that world pvp turn to be crap...
For me the best bet is... Achieve the best level of battleground and world pvp... and then find a way to make them work together, in where no one takes down the other one like in war, so far, no game had done that...
LOTRO was not to bad and done some recovery though I do agree STO has really failed and will have to do a lot if there going to make it 2-3 years down the road.
SNIP
I agree with the latter sentence. Cryptic has been bragging about how fast they can churn out new MMOs using their new engine. It seems to be all about quantity over quality with them, and their games provide proof of that.

I understand why the OP made the LotRO comparison. Some people were really hoping for that game to be more of a virtual world along the lines of its original conception (Middle Earth Online) before Turbine took over the game's development and more or less "wowified" the game into what was eventually released. Not saying there isn't a lot of folks who enjoy LotRO, but there is a sizable group of players who feel the IP was wasted in the final game.
Same situation here, the Star Trek Universe begged to be a large, open virtual world simulation, and instead they made it even more of a "game" than Turbine did with LotRO, and the OP and others are disappointed in the result.
That said, there will be people who enjoy STO as delivered.

LotRO is easily one of the better games out now. The community alone puts it in the top 3.
The game hasn't even been released yet.
Does Star Trek interest me? Nope. Still doesn't change the fact that a game deserves at the very least the chance to release before it gets treated with the words "hate" so much. Hate is an almost laughable word to use when critiquing anyways. It's a sure fire way of making others not take you seriously.
Yep, I was one of those who saw the evil twisted orc within a grim world screenshot, along with a description of a very open ended game. To bad that never happened.
The way I look at it is people do what they are best at, had a different studio obtained the ST license it may have been an EVE esc deep socially driven game. Yet the studio that got it tried going with what they feel comfortable with,. In anything creative you stay within the boundaries of your capabilities for better or worse, it's going to be better than anything you'd do using skills you have a weakness in.
