I think its pretty obviouse that SWTOR will have a cash shop. The question is if you have to pay a monthly sub to play it.
I think it will be: Pay for box + microtransactions for cosmetic stuff and extra character slots etc + pay for DLC but no monthly fee unless some kind of VIP offer.
If WoW = The Beatles and WAR = Led Zeppelin Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
If the cash shop gives the purchasing player an advantage in gameplay over normal paying players, No I would not.
If the shop however is for fun, unique items (custom models, outfits, missions?) and gives no disadvantage to the normal paying player, Yes I would still play.
I don't feel the need to compete with people in MMORPGs unless it's PvP. And if I have to spend money to compete in PvP, then I will most likely have the choice to avoid it. Cash shops are almost always optional and usually only appeal to those who have something to prove.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
No matter what game it is I wont play it if there is an in-game cash shop. I simply can't stand that while some of us work really hard to obtain certain goals, other with enough real life cash can just buy it. It simply breaks the game for me, more than anything else!
It depends on what is in the cash shop.. under no circumstances would I play a game that sells gear, or weapons, or pets or anything of the sort in a cash shop.. though I will play it if its for character transfers, sex and race changes.. and/or account transfers. Nothing that actually effects gameplay.
I'd rather pay a larger monthly than to open my wallet several times a month to buy stuffs that shold be content covered by the sub (but the game has to be in a good/finished state), there should also be a " lemon law " for paid betas and unfinished products.
Does not bother me as long as it is limited to extra content (must have for most) or non-essential items that do not modify your character abilities or statistics. Anything that adds to the basic look and feel is fine.
"The person who experiences greatness must have a feeling for the myth he is in."
Far as I'm concerned that's why you pay a monthly fee to pay for upkeep of the game and for small additions to be made to the game over time - minus expansions of course. So far, the main argument I've seen supporting it is that it allows the company to have more money not only for profit but for adding content to the game free of charge.
Least tht was the argument people gave for CO having one. Certainly panned out that way in that game >_>
So if they plan on having a monthly sub then I doubt I'll play if they have a cs as well.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
A - I want to be able to look exactly how I want. If I can pay a few extra bucks and get a costume I like the looks of, WIN
2 - It will weed out all the whiny people who hate cash shops before the game is released and save the rest of us the irritation of having the entire forums corrupted by people QQing about it.
The only thing about the cash shops that would bother me in the least is double xp potions and the like, but those are highly unlikely. This is Bioware we're talking about here. I trust them pretty well. I've played Bioware games for years and they haven't let me down yet.
Actually, I personally don't care if the game is more of a co-op game with a sub fee. It's a Bioware game and they put their heart and soul into making their games. I'll enjoy it.
Put SW:TOR up against WOW and it would be like putting Beethoven up against an elevator music remix of Britney Spears. The former is Art. The latter is just an attempt to fill time.

I actually expect TOR to have something in regard to cash shop items. For two reasons, a spokesperson who brought up a possible new star wars MMO in '05 while giving an interview or press conference on SWG (the NGE to be precise). The game was expected to make a 2010 launch at the time, interestingly enough. She said then they were looking at micro transactions as a possible payment option.
The second reason is the amount of money that has been spent here. They need to make it back some how, I can see MT being a viable method of this.
I have no clue what they might offer at this point, vanity items are more widely accepted so those are a strong possibility. Companions are another big thing on the possibility list, as well as quests and other content related items. As far as advantage items go I doubt that, but you never know.

That's about how I feel about it. I'm fine with useless pets, never cared for them. As a side note, transfers and the other thing you listed are not really seen as cash shop, just services.
If its a sub game then no definately not if its free but with cash shop then fine
Why pay extra for stuff that should just be free if your paying a sub
Some player are like well if it add more costumes or allowed for character image changes
to that I say NO, if they have that in the game then it should have been there in the first place without spend more on it.
Realistically if they have a cash shop the only point of it would be for extra bonuses exp etc. for the player who work all day and got the extra money but not extra time. Thats what it would be there for and it will just end up making players spend more on top of a subscription ultimatly leading to the inevitable nerfs that require you to use the cash shop.
Its a bad idea on top of a subscription, even if it starts out harmless it simple would lead the managers looking to make the game more profitable to messing with it and the game. That would happen at the cost of expansions or added content which would be the normal way to generate the increase.
So, yes, it's simple enough, if The Old Republic got a cash shop, would you still play the game?
No I won't play.
Though it will have for sure imo. Bioware love the nickel and dime these days.
Any game that features Pay to Achieve gaming over Play to Achieve gaming turns me right off. I am not sure they even count as games tbh.
Just to clarify though... DLC content to be played through and enjoyed is fine (as long as the original game isnt light on content), meta game services (extra char slots etc), are fine, but anything that is traditionaly an ingame earned reward (fluff or otherwise) being for sale for me isnt. This obviously includes XP pots and whatever.
Being a big IP and with EA's hands in it, it will most likely have a monthly fee, they need a big cash machine since WAR flopped.
Personally I dislike the shops, but if Bioware recent games give a hint of where they are heading into, there will be a lot of DLC which obviously will have different items in them, so those that don't pay won't get them (besides buying them off a player for over the roof prices), again, this is just an educated guess.
If the shops are only for cosmetic items, nothing that affects the game whatsoever, then I will try the game.

/agree as soon as I have to pay monthly and have to pay extra for end game or even healing items I will split faster then A drunk whore's legs on prom night.

I am interested guys, and not looking for an argument here...
Why do you think people want to buy fluff (cosmetic) items from a cash shop for their characters, rather then just winning them by playing the game?
What value in a mmorpg do they have, what desirability, if everyone has easy CC access to them? I dont get it.
I would still play this game for a month or two even if it had a cash shop for the story.
But I would not stay long term if you were able to attain valuable items through a cash shop, I believe that type of model completely goes against what an mmorpg is.
I'm sure that Bioware would make a short term profit with cash shops, but it would negatively effect their long term profitability.
If cash shops are the future in online gaming then I guess it's time for me to hang up my online gaming, which I basically have for a quite awhile now because none of the shit that is out right now is worth a damn besides WoW unfortunately. I enjoyed WoW but it just ran its course with me.

I don't even consider taking a look to cash shop Pay2toShowoff MMOs. TOr wouldn't be an exception.
Surprising. People are still saying this? I guess some never learn.
