I realise that the OP is infact a rather large FF fan, but dude, even a colleague at work, who is a huge FF fan by the way, laughed off my question proclaiming star wars the winner. It's just JRPG's have been offering the same thing for quite some time now, even when the western RPG's have been evolving, JRPG's just refuse to change and catch up with the times.
It'll be one of the top selling MMO's, (Swtor).
Longing for Skyrim, The Old Republic and Mass Effect 3

The game will be huge when it releases
the flocks of gamers who love star wars will go for it. and It will sell faster than if Mcdonalds released a new form of Mcnuggets!
But it will not last. The in game offerings are not dense and new enough to sustain new gamers and the number of gamers (The SWG fans ) that will simply migrate from SWG to SWTOR will nto sustain it as a "decade breaker" or anything like that.
Yes. More westerners like SW. But not in the demographic being considered. and i am NOT saying FF fans are more plentiful. What I am saying is FF has had a mroe lasting effect on GAMERS in particular than SW. More MMO players have played an FF game and appreciate it than have played an SW game and appreciated it.

Is this just opinion or do you have some sort of statistics to back up this claim? You're making hardly any sense, Star Wars has more appeal outside the IP. Small things can make this game big, from appealing pve to pvp. Game titles have very little to do with the gaming world. BioWare is known for making great games, it will of coarse appeal to KoTOR fans, BioWare fans, SW fans, Fantasy fans, Sci-fi Fans, and the game may be just what YOU have been waiting for in terms of gameplay. Why there is a FF vs SW debate confuses me, seems completely retarded.

amen to that, if you havent touched anything yet, dont flame or fame it. and btw Newmeanie your playing an FF, 1st they become famouse cause of there good storylines, 2nd hangs a bit to te first but i never expected an FF onliner aswell, FF's gameplay is normally (the original) super relaxed to play, SQUARE ENIX is using a name with a good history for probaly the same reason as SW, LOTR, ... marketing. from what ive been reading ist diffs of taste in play enviorment/world.

The game has been stated to innovate intensively on story telling and advanced individual character developing scenarios.
This is huge for kids who love to read books, but its not what most are online to do.
Bioware is known for making great 1 player games. this has no bearing on its success in multiplayer facets.
I am not debating between FF and SW, i am simply using it as an example. I am not claiming that FFXIV will be a smash hit, (i do HOPE so) but I am reasonable and have reasons to admit it can fail just as harshly as this game will.
So many people have fought for their game being a WoW-Killer. WAR, Aion, AoC, Vanguard etc... All of these had innovations with combat, PvP, interactivity.
This game offers none of this innovation and simply offers campaign stories remiscient of Dragon Age and offers the same hoity toity fights as WoW. At least with whats currently been released about it.
I just don't get it, like the title says. I don't get how people can see Star Wars, see what they've released about the game, and think it will be so huge. Its simply an IP and Bioware fascination that is unfounded and will not continue past release.
SQUARE did the same with the first FF, FF was know so it had the fans intrest, but they they dont provide FF with the online they just offer the name FF not the FF feature that made the name.
dont think a game will fail cause you dont like it, play the beta and release and then give a testers opinion not a taste/idea/feeling/whatever opinion.

Yes, this is my own opinion.
Innovation is hardly the seller of an MMO. The modern and majority of the MMO crowd wants a less tedious MMO that is fun to play for every second they are logged on. I'm not sure if actually talking to you is worth the time considering the heavy bias you are putting into your posts. But I'll reply one more time and see where this goes.
You say FFXIV has room to succeed while ToR will fail harshly and exactly how does this help prove your point by acting as a stubborn 9 year old child rooting for his story MMO to succeed while claiming the other story MMO is for children. BioWare is known for making single player games, but those games are all extremely well done most if not all of them being heavy sellers. This is something Square(Soft) was known for and they seem to be doing pretty damn well. Not to mention most of the characters are unique and likeable while your average Jrpg are full of 20 year old men to resemble 12 year old girl-boys that have drowned their hair in dozens of bottles of hair gel like they just walked off the set of Queer Eye for the Strait Guy, no character has any unique impression, who is constantly slitting his wrist in dialogue over silly unrealistic laughable situations where every story begins to blend in. If this type of mess can sell to people then I think two buffoons striking each other over the head with glow sticks might have shot.
Btw I'm not even being biased. I have played quite a few of the FF spikey headed emo games where the world is about the end and you must save it , and enjoyed them. Again, if it's fun, it will sell.

Yes, this is my own opinion.
Interesting Thread, and yes I've read the whole thing, I like to see the big picture before putting in my part.
I'll just give you two things to refute your opinion that it will be big at launch and then will peter out because the 25 and under demographic is the main target. I know you used a link to the average gamer age, and saw that it was 30, that kind of made you think a bit about the staying power. I just want to mention two things to you, that link you were looking at is from 2004. The current average game player in general is 35 meaning the target audience would be the 35 year old age range. Also... and this was a HUGE surprise to me... the average age of the most frequent game purchaser?..... 39 ... who knew?
Just food for thought, take the information and run with it. Interesting note is that women over 18 are a pretty good amount at 34% and many women aren't into Science fiction. So will it be big at launch like you believe? Definitely, will it drop to abysmal levels because of the 25 and under crowd getting bored as you say? Probably not since they aren't going to be the driving force behind the games success.
It's obvious this game will attract many people that just want to play it because it's Star Wars. How many depends on the marketing. It will be normal that some of them leave the game after a while, because MMOs are not their kind of game or whatever.
Of rest of the people, the majority will stay if the game is decent and the rest will leave if they had enough, as it happens with all the MMOs in the market.
Final fantasy will be a great game, but I really dont think it will be as successful or as popular as SWTOR. SWTOR has the highest budget of any game ever and it's being created by, in my opinion, the greatest rpg makers ever . I think it's massively under hyped.
Both games will break this horrible trend we have of mmo developers letter us down. But I do believe SWTOR will be one of the most popular games of all time.
Isn't it funny how a quick search for testicular cancer can turn into a wank.

I'm attacking YOUR hate for FFXIV with a 'stupid' idea to show that a new race would just take the balance out of the game.
If the 5 races worked as well as it did in FFXI (very well, indeed), then why mess with a good thing? the RACES aren't what people complained about, they LIKED them, so they KEPT them, and changed what people DIDN'T like.. I think thats a good use of time don't you?
Star Wars.... Its freaking STARWARS!!!! Light sabres and R2D2! MMO? (partial MMO?) Not for me, kthxbye
Ya that's right it's Star Wars, you know the huge phenomenon that swept the world since it's existence. Even kids these days that didn't grow up with it know what the hell it is. They want the cool action figures. It's the biggest frickin IP you can control! Not to mention the thousands of books of star wars that expanded the universe of non-cannon story. You obviously need to do some history on Star Wars because you just made yourself look like a total idiot. I'm a fan of final fantasy myself, but there is no way in hell I'd ever say Final Fantasy is more superior then the massive IP of Star Wars. Thinking this MMO is'nt going to flock millions to play it, would be foolish. Good luck with that.

Pretty much this, though TOR has an opportunity to become the next major "gateway MMO". We all know BioWare has the funds to market the game well. Many people who've never played an MMO will be drawn to it simply because it's Star Wars. If the game is relatively polished and functional at launch, then these people will stay and spread the word. This will cause another huge influx into the MMO genre (whether that's good or bad is something I'd rather not get into). Warcraft had a popular IP based off its successful single-player games. Star Wars' influence doesn't need an explanation, we all know how big it is. The circumstances are similar. Am I saying TOR will ever reach WoW's numbers? No. I expect it to stay under a healthy million. But if the game is good and it offers enough to draw people away from WoW, then it could break a million and go beyond.
Of course, everyone here is saying it'll just be another WoW clone, so how could it draw people away from WoW? In my opinion, there are more than enough differences between the two.
I do not see a MMO based on STAR WARS being excessively popular for more than a month. Its a fun idea, but its not a lasting impression, i mean... Its freaking star wars.
Thats like making a Muppets MMO.
Who says you're meant to? I've never understood why some go gaga over Final Fantasy games but yet some do. Different strokes for different folks.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
Well OP, it's just bizarre that you can't at least understand the attraction of it. The real arguement you want answered is, 'whats so great about star wars? I think its lame'.
Which has led to your confusion why it'd be a success. Truth be told its the majority that do like star wars. It'll be successful on the fact its star wars, it'll be successful on the fact its a Bioware game, it's got too much good going for it. Dont get me wrong i love final fantasy, I have them all, I consider myself a huge fan, but I'm not kidding myself. Star wars is essentially a fan Empire (Irony).
When it's released you'll see why it's successful. Until just wait and ride the lightning lol.

Ok now i step in 25 pages later lol what you dont understand you keep saying its Friggin STAR WARS yea star wars is huge in the west but in your facts FF is huge in asia not in the states sure we all may love the franchise but it is no where near as popular across the world as Star wars do you relize how many star wars fans are out there?
Here take this for a example Stargate is tied for me with all time fav sci fi movie's and series with star wars now being a star gate fan i know and it has been posted over and over again on numerous stargate sites that 22 million people watch stargate religiously every week that it is on. 22 Million people is alot of people take half of them and put them in a mmo world because its stargate fans will try it that already holds the cake now imagine how many fans of starwars there are? Do i have your attention?
Star Wars is exactly that Star Wars its takeing place 500 years before the first movie thats 500 years i belive unless its 1500 years i forgot the exact timeline that they can do what they want they do not need to follow anything just rebel imperial and lightsabers is all they ned to follow there is no story back them they came up with it they can do what they want with it.
As for bioware only makeing single player games? lets see neverwinter nights 1 i think i have over 1500 hours logged in on that game online. Bioware is the only one i trust makeing games now they atleast still care about what they do.
I am buying FFXIV because i liked the first one but i wount fool myself or evan think that it will be a top ten game sure it will be in a few more countries then SWTOR just like wow and the 20 countries there in but like all great games or (a Robed IP like WoW is that is a good game just over hyped) they all come to a end EQ1 had its 5 year reign as king and it was only in 3 counties and still had 8 million subs at its peak .
WoW dumbed everything down you talked earlier about so called worked hard for there gear lol WoW there is no working hard you wanna see hard go play UO or EQ1 that was hard i have been gameing for well almost 29 years and i still know that if something intrests you you will buy it and walk away from the other game with no problem. I have done that a bunch of times in my like in eq1 i had 3 level 65's all flagged for PoTA =Plane of Time A and B with all the elite gear that took me years to get only to walk away for the next new game that may hold me over.
SWTOR will be a top 10 mmorpg in fact i would simply already place it #2 on the list already because its just that as you say STAR WARS.
Lots of people bashing the fact that this game will focus on story. Well, pretty much no other mmo does, so you have countless choices. I, for one, am very excited about an mmo focusing on a good story.
i dont wanna kill 30 mobs and then another 30 mobs just to lvl, i prefer to have fun like in a single player game leveling and having mmo aspects like pvp and pve fun, i think thats a win

You say 22 million watch religiously everyweek... Take Half of them and put htem in an MMO? If you took all your favorited STAR WARS fans, would you say HALF of them played SWG? Not a freaking chance. that stat is out of left field.
Say we take maybe 1/10 of them, thats still 2 mil for initial release lol. Then theres people who leave. just by that alone its not going to remain that popular.
Whatever, we'll see. All I am saying is that the IP alone will SELL the game, but not keep it ALIVE, and that a story driven focus, again, will not keep it ALIVE, since the MAJORITY of players do not want to see it, they want to kill shit and want to see stuff that is at least similar to what they are used to. very FEW WoW players read quest texts, and me, for one, will not want to give a crap about what this game's story is, I just want to play with people, around people, and against people.

It'll be one of the top selling MMO's, (Swtor).
Noone is reading my posts and I am slowly giving up on restating it.
The game will be huge when it releases

Yes, this is my own opinion.
You, sir, should probably just stick to FPS's. And obviously you have no idea about fanbase. SWTOR is looking at four fanbases, not one. You have the Star Wars fans, and then you have the Bioware fans, and then you have the people who just played KOTOR and thought it was great. Don't forget people who enjoy MMO's. And I'm going to assume you've never played a Bioware game, probably just sat behind your desk shouting obscenities to 24 other people when they wipe on Ony. Bioware has a reputation of making games that few if any can compete with...the reviews speak for themselves. So you have millions of Star Wars fans around the world, plus millions of Bioware fans, and then add all the people who played KOTOR.
I bet there are more than 2 million waiting for this game, I bet there's twice that waiting for a beta invite. And you can't use leaving a game because every game does that. Heck, they say WoW has 11.5 million subs. Newsflash, that's marketing. It's a tactic used boost revenue and see if more people will play. Half the subs are more than likely chinese gold-farmers and hackers. Honestly it's boring now a days.
The IP will not sell The Old Republic. It may help but the one selling it is Bioware's track record of great games. And on the reading quests, you are definitley wrong there. A lot of people enjoy reading the quests in WoW because they are well written and it adds to the experience. If all people did was click on a guy and hit except then the game becomes grinding and boring if there is no purpose as to why you're doing it. People care about the story of a game. To think otherwise is complete idiocy. If all you want to do is play with people, around people, and against people then I suggest Modern Warfare 2 or Counter Strike is more up your alley than an MMO.
"If at first you don't succeed, excessive force is probably the answer."

39 ... who knew?
This is not taken just from MMO's but all gaming in general. http://www.theesa.com/facts/index.asp
I can't believe there are people who are even arguing this.
-Until Final Fantasy releases movies that are considered a cultural phenomina..
-Unil Final Fantasy is known to the masses who don't play video games
-Until there are conventions held around the world for Final Fantasy
-Until there are thousands of books flocking the shelves on Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy will cease to be in Star Wars' league. But thanks for the laugh, I really needed it.

Lots of people bashing the fact that this game will focus on story. Well, pretty much no other mmo does, so you have countless choices. I, for one, am very excited about an mmo focusing on a good story.
yeah story driven is good for leveling
i dont wanna kill 30 mobs and then another 30 mobs just to lvl, i prefer to have fun like in a single player game leveling and having mmo aspects like pvp and pve fun, i think thats a win
This game is a complete year off from release. I will judge the game when I can try it. Hype/hate is totally useless.

Noone is reading my posts and I am slowly giving up on restating it.
The game will be huge when it releases
the flocks of gamers who love star wars will go for it. and It will sell faster than if Mcdonalds released a new form of Mcnuggets!
Yes, this is my own opinion.

If all you want to do is play with people, around people, and against people then I suggest Modern Warfare 2 or Counter Strike is more up your alley than an MMO.
lol
lol
Okay, im going to make a Blender company, called Blendoholics. Its goign to be worth about 5 million dollars,
Then, we'll make an MMO.
We did SO well with blenders,
well be GREAT with mmos!
