if you don't like the model then dont' support it quit crying about it
This poster is why the future of MMos will begin to rot because they accept any garbage that is thrown at them just because the product has the name " Star Trek". No people shouldn't stop crying about it because everyone wants mmos to survive and with adding this type of stuff things will go downhill fast.
I read some posts on the official forums and believe it or not people are defending this type of attempt to make more money. You think this is the end? They will keep pushing more stuff and eventually you will have to pay just to level up to the next level. If you don't put a stopping point to these developers they will see how far they can go and you will be charged just to level up or get new skills. Its getting beyond dumb and what disgusts me the most is that people actually defend this. It makes me wonder how many people are doing drugs out there.

Which is what I assume (and hope) that everyone here who is speaking out against these micro-transactions are doing.
Doesn't mean we can't still talk about it and bash Cryptic for being worse than the Ferengi.
i never watched Star Trek what did the Ferengi do?
They are incredibly greedy, money-grubbing bastards. But, somehow, they are less greedy than Cryptic.
lol.. quite so..
yet, a Ferengi would only submit that it is/was a "legitimate business opportunity" no matter how dubious or deciteful the workings of it. Very much like his doppleganger.
I am actually laughing about this. Crazy, I know.

Right. People do defend it.
The question is: how many of those people are players?

Not gonna lie. I personally think most of the shit getting slung about the game is bullshit, because its fun if you put down the fucking microscope for a second, but this? Yeah, this is a joke. Cryptic lost any credibility they might have had left after this shit.
If you think charging for playable races now is okay, just wait until the game continues and you see what else they have in mind.

It's not a good sign and it raises questions what the box and the sub pay for if not playable races. I voted with my wallet by not purchasing the game. Those who voted with their wallet by purchasing are free to do so, just don't act like you doing so means no one else can question the games status, charges and content (or lack of).
parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.
Funny how the OP omitted the little fact that with your game purchase you get enough free Cryptic points to buy those two races twice over. Aren't facts fun?
Edit: Oh and just to shoot down this argument before it starts... You get 500 points with a game purchase... the people that had 500 bonus points in there pre-order bonuses got an additional 500 added to that for a total of 1000 free points. The Klingon only costs 240 and the Ferengi is only 80. You get more than enough to buy both just for buying the game. This is a non-issue.

I didn't get that option with the STEAM version.
Everyone gets 500 free points with the game purchase. Check in game and you'll have them after you activate your Retail Key.

All the Sims 3 games came with 1000 points, just change the fact that item shops are often overpriced. Do you seriously think Cryptic didn't factor in those so called "free" points into the price of the shop items and/or the box price?

I am officialy not even going to try the a free trial for this game if one comes out.

Looking like you might be wrong on this one, Bren (and you know how annoying that is), but it's irrelevant, really.
As a player and paying customer - why wouldn't you want the content to be included at no additional charge (and having to spend points which will have to be bought to be replaced counts as an additional charge)?

I agree, the points and the races are there to get everyone hooked. It's the same marketing concept as McDonald's lowering the price of their newest burger to get everyone to buy it as it is cheap and new, then once everyone is hooked raise the price and watch the dough roll in. What a steaming pile of goat shit. My heart goes out to anyone who is a trekie and really wanted a good Star Trek MMO run by a company that can see past Ben Franklin's fat ass.

Well said m8,
or as Spock would say.. Logical.
All this does is START the micro transaction "culture" for the game. So not only do the folks who feel "compinsated" for their loyalty to the pre order, headstart, ect, get "more than enough" coins to purchase what SHOULD be (in many players eyes) included content with purchase and subscription,.... they get to BETA test Crypts item mall to boot.
In addition... you mean to tell me folks that havn't yet purchased the game, lets say the "cautious" (or smart), consumer will not be privy to these incentives? So what happens to these new players? Do they get the "bonus" as well, say 1, 2 months down the line?. Legitimate question.
One more question. What about the life time subscription players? Will they get say an additional bonus of coins to last them the 1.4 years it will take to break even on thier investment? 1.4 years seems to be alot of potential coins. Surely more than 1k.
I'm not trying to rattle anyone's cages here.. but something about all this simply doesn NOT add up to a progressive evolution in the mmorp platform/genre. At least not a positive one. STO must be one helluva game m8.. ONE HELLUVA game.
done.

There are like a dozen FREE playable races for the Federation and another handful for the Klingons already. You only have 3 slots (or 5 if you got the lifetime membership) so you couldn't possible have one of every race anyways. I started w/ 500 points and bought both the Federation Klingon and Ferengi, though in retrospect I doubt I'll ever play either. (Playing a Klingon as part of the Empire sounds more interesting to me anyways.)
To my knowledge, according to Star Trek cannon there was only ever one Klingon in the Federation (Warf). Same with the Ferengi (Nog). It's entirely reasonable that they would want to limit the number of Klingons and Ferengi that get played since they're trying to maintain the atmosphere of the original Star Trek universe. I think they would have been justified to not include them at all.
The best part is that Craptari decided to drop this bomb after the lifetimem sub offer expired
Some of us have been calling this game a scam for a long tie and its nice to see more people realise what a horrible company Craptari is, and that when you look behind the Star Trek name there isnt much to bee happy about this game/MMO.

Aouch. So first Ive to buy the game and then Ive to use more cash to be able to play the reace I want.
Not cool Cryptic. Not cool at all!
And as someone wrote about points that players gets for free. It just a way to slowly impant micro payments in p2p games. A really nasty thing.
