As if 'payable' races/classes was something new in MMO industry...
Wha?

OK... I'll bite. Please do tell, name one Pay to Play (subscription based) mmo, that has had payable races (classes for that matter though not relevant to THIS post), that wasn't incorporated in a major expantion of one type or another. Expac, that included major content, new zones, mobs... and the like. Name ANY mmo.. Free to Play included, that had payable races OR classes upon release. Oh, and why where at it.. how many Pay to Play mmo's out there that have an Item mall attached to it as well. The closest you get is EQ2 and thats ONE server that pays the player while SOE gets a small % "service charge".
I'll be over here.. drinking my coffee, waiting for your DDO comparison.
ps... Even Warhammer Online literally for free, opened up two additional classes because they couldnt get them out at release. LoTRO, opens up chapters/books routinely for free, WoW (I know I know), content patches for free. EvE online, HUGE amount of content, ship classes (could be associated with classes in itself) .. you guessed it .. Free... I could go on and on.

Some of the biggest..
SRO, Atlantica (mercenaries), PW. Probably becuase they really don't need to. So why does STO?

So races/classes released along with expansion are for free? No, they are still payable just like with STO. You can count yourself how many games got those...
Only what is different is that Cryptic business model allows you to choose what you pay for or not instead of mainstram pay-for-extra-bundle-of-features+content.
It might not suit you, you might argue that 3$ for new race is too much or w/e but fact is they do nothing exceptional and you are just trolling about discovering the wheel...
Greed machine in action.. I put this on track with Cryptic lowering the level cap to 45 shortly before open beta.. We all know what's next.. EXPANSION to be bought to give back the original 5 levels you lost.. Ha Ha Ha.. I wouldn't doubt to see the Klingon PvE content done the same way.. Either in the form of an expansion or shop micro transaction..
Everyone gets 500 free points with the game purchase. Check in game and you'll have them after you activate your Retail Key.
Bren
All the Sims 3 games came with 1000 points, just change the fact that item shops are often overpriced. Do you seriously think Cryptic didn't factor in those so called "free" points into the price of the shop items and/or the box price?
Overpriced? You haven't looked at any Cryptic Store that is obvious. 500 points costs $6.25. The Klingon costs 240 points and the Ferengi 80. That equals $2.60 for the Klingon and $1 for the Ferengi. Wow is THAT unreasonable... LOL
Edit: As for everyone getting 500 free points I'll freely admit that I could be wrong. Makes me wonder though where the extra 500 points I got came from.

Ok friend... I'll be kind.
I thought that was covered in my reply. I marked it red so that you can actually read it this time. You see.. we are talking about MAJOR expacs. Expansions/Content that was released AFTER a great deal of time (minimum 1 yr on average) had passed even with FREE content added in between said release and expac (I gave some examples for you, but you didnt read that either apparently) NOT just after release and NOT just unlocking race/classes.
anytime your drop 50$ for a box (+for collectors), 15$ a month for scrib (most folks will at least play +1 month past free 30) and for some 350$ for a lifetime membership, all within the time span of 1 month.. your absolutely correct. 3$, is too much. But I understand that pre-orders and LtS dont have to worry due to bonus coins, not the point. The POINT, is that race/class shoulnt even BE in the item shop to begin with. Just my opinion m8.
"trolling about discoverying the wheel"... lol. um yeah.

I'ts not that it in itself is "overpriced" per se. Lord knows I have spent a great deal of monies in Item malls over the years , It's a model that works. Folks can do what they want with thier money indeed.
But the frequency and timing at which all the costs are coming together is setting a very poor precident. In my opninion, the rational is relying on the popularity of the IP to carry the excuse for aggresive.. no.. VERY aggresive pricing.
I have absolutely NO argument about the game play? Instanced=fine, Less than appealing end game=fine, its a fluid game, appeals to a great deal of people, and from what I gather "fun" for many. GREAT!. Changes will happen over time. My issue is the standard by which Crypt is setting in thier marketing structure. I give my opinion to that regard.

As said, Cryptic use different business model allowing them to do excatly the same as any MMOs included in red marked part of your post but in a different way. What you can do here is that you can get a new race now, instead of waiting a year for new expansion.
As Brenelael pointed out more accurately than my raw guess, it is 2.6$ and 1$ for new races. Do you still think it is too much? Fair enough, spent your CP on something else or just don't buy anything. You recieve 500 CP along with purchase and their spending is a matter of your choice only.
Wheter races should be a part of item shop is only a matter of opinion, business model and point of view. Not to mention that STO races have appereance role mostly and their traits have minor effect on gameplay.

Point taken. I can respect the fact that some may have issues with the timing of the new races in the C-Store but on the flip side they needed to put something in there for launch. Putting two races that should be rare on the Fed side anyways was a good call in my opinion. I was actually a little pissed when I thought everyone got enough points to buy them as it would make putting them in there in the first place moot. Klingons and Ferengi in Starfleet should be rare and not available to everyone. Whether they make them unlockable somehow or make people pay for them makes no difference to me as long as I'm not running into one in game every two minutes.
I've said many times that I have no problem with Item Malls in P2P games as long as the stuff they have in them is fluff for the most part. This way you can still play the game and have fun for your $15 a month without paying an extra dime if you choose not to. Item Malls in P2P games are the way of the future for MMOs, like it or not, so people had just better get used to the idea. If you don't like them... just don't use them.
Funny how the OP omitted the little fact that with your game purchase you get enough free Cryptic points to buy those two races twice over. Aren't facts fun?
Edit: Oh and just to shoot down this argument before it starts... You get 500 points with a game purchase... the people that had 500 bonus points in there pre-order bonuses got an additional 500 added to that for a total of 1000 free points. The Klingon only costs 240 and the Ferengi is only 80. You get more than enough to buy both just for buying the game. This is a non-issue.
Bren
And 500 points makes it OK? What about in six months when there's new ship classes or planets in the store? No matter how you cut it, this is a money grubbing move.

I'll let you attempt to read what I wrote again. You probably didn't read the pre-orders real well either. Depending on where you purchased your pre-order, you may or may not have received points.

Yet Ferengi and Klingons will get racial abilities that no other Federation race has, that's how races work in the game. Is that "fluff?" It will have an impact on the game.
Edit: Oh, and those things are already there for Champions Online. Will STO really be any different?

If you ever played STO, you would know how minor effect character traits have on gameplay...
Anyone who has a brain in their head's and / or self-respect will be quitting this game immediately, as well as cancelling their preorders, to be perfectly honest.
Played: From Earth & Beyond, Anarchy Online, Matrix Online, Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Age of Conan, Tabula Rasa (Beta), EvE Online, City of Villians, Atlantica Online, Guild Wars, Lineage 2, Pirates of the Burning Sea, PlanetSide, RF Online, Second Life, Fallen Earth.

Just cancelled my pre-order and it felt really good. I recommend everyone else do it, as this game and Cryptic wouldn't be worth the piss in my bladder if there HQ was on fire. They are modern day crooks using gaming as their medium for a quick-buck and that sickens me. I now have £24.99 free to spend on a game of my choice which feels great, AvP here i come.
As long as a substantial amount of people buys the game anyway, the companies will keep doing such stuff. Well, I stick to FE.
Still making those tutorials/reviews? good stuff m8

You know on the one hand, you have a point... racial skills provide marginal results at best, at least that was the case in OB. On the other hand, you're also pointing out what I see as one of the weaknesses in the game while trying to support Cryptic's choice. I think there is a flaw at hand when the difference between a human, vulcan and klingon is so minor that it hardly matters.
parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.
the only life time sub i ever bought was hellgate london cause i loved that game you're not forced to pay for any of that extra stuff if you don't like it DON"T support it

Until Cryptic decide youll be paying $12 for a respec, that is.

And 500 points makes it OK? What about in six months when there's new ship classes or planets in the store? No matter how you cut it, this is a money grubbing move.

I'll let you attempt to read what I wrote again. You probably didn't read the pre-orders real well either. Depending on where you purchased your pre-order, you may or may not have received points.

Come back once those things are there, until then C-Store is for fluff only.

Yet Ferengi and Klingons will get racial abilities that no other Federation race has, that's how races work in the game. Is that "fluff?" It will have an impact on the game.
Edit: Oh, and those things are already there for Champions Online. Will STO really be any different?
As long as a substantial amount of people buys the game anyway, the companies will keep doing such stuff.
Well, I stick to FE.
Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
If you ever played STO, you would know how minor effect character traits have on gameplay...
Anyone who has a brain in their head's and / or self-respect will be quitting this game immediately, as well as cancelling their preorders, to be perfectly honest.
It's going down, down, down...
R.I.P STO
Played:
From Earth & Beyond, Anarchy Online, Matrix Online, Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Age of Conan, Tabula Rasa (Beta), EvE Online, City of Villians, Atlantica Online, Guild Wars, Lineage 2, Pirates of the Burning Sea, PlanetSide, RF Online, Second Life, Fallen Earth.
Still making those tutorials/reviews? good stuff m8
I think that was you, Watched as you dual pistoled your way across the wastes.. I might be mistaken though. Old age an all.

ps.. i agree with your statement btw.

Forums are where everyone states their opinion and discusses things.
You're not forced to come here/read these opinions.
If you don't like forums/people's opinions, don't read them
Next thing you know they will start charging players $1 per skill per class.
Disgraceful.
Stay away from this game.
Come back once those things are there, until then C-Store is for fluff only.
Until Cryptic decide youll be paying $12 for a respec, that is.
