Next thing you know they will start charging players $1 per skill per class.
Comments like this sound ridiculous. The "slippery slope" logic doesn't hold up. Micro transactions aren't a new thing and everyone knew they were planing to use micro transactions from the very start.
Don't get your panties in a bunch just because you have to pay all of $1 for yet another playable race when you already have 15 others to chose from and a maximum of only 5 slots available anyways.

If they want me to pay $13 to respec a character I'd probably pay it. It's not that expensive and I don't expect to need to a respec that frequently.
Unless you respec every week $13 doesn't sound outrageously expensive.
Seriously, some of you need to get a job and quit whining about having to pay a nominal fee for optional (and in my opinion, cosmetic) content.

Not including playable races in the release so you can sell them in the cash shop to people paying a monthly sub...I hope this game crashes and burns hard for this model. Sorry Trek fans but developers need to see that this model will not be acceptable to players. Cash shop and F2P or everything included with monthly sub. One or the other. Anything else is a blatant cash grab.
It seems like companies get bolder and bolder with each new release to see just how far they can push the "playerbase as ATMs" model. Unffortunately, because of the IP involved, they will get away with it.
What a sad fate for the Star Trek IP.
Actually, they won't get away with it; not with me at least. This is coming from a Star Trek fan from the early 70's. I've seen all the shows--every incarnation--and own most of the films. I love Star Trek, and I love MMOs. Leave out playable races just so you can charge extra in the cash shop? Reminds me of what they did with respecs in Champions online. No thanks Cryptic. I'm never going to play a game like that, no matter what the IP is.
I played STO during the open beta and was pleasantly surprised that I actually found the game fun, as I really wasn't expecting much from it. I decided to pre-order the Gold Edition instore at GAME here in the UK. The pre-order bonus for this was a limited edition ingame phase-rifle, not 500 points for the C-Store. All pre-orders had different bonuses depending on where you pre-ordered from.
I was looking forward to picking up my retail copy of STO on Friday (EU launchday), but I have to say that this has really put me off actually picking the game up. I'll be giving STO and Cryptic a wide bearth from now on. I knew about the cash-shop and micro-transactions already, but was expecting the items for sale would be fluff items like non-combat pets, different outfits etc. Having playable races for sale is going too far IMHO, even if they don't cost a lot of money in real terms. I see it as a slippery slope, they could sell anything in that store in the future including things that would unbalance the game such as better ships and components and I'm not willing to support this greedy behaviour by Cryptic.
I was planning to play this at least until SW:TOR released (alongside EVE, my main MMO), but this news has changed that. I just hope to God that this move crashes and burns and that Cryptic end out losing in the end, otherwise other developers/publishers will follow Cryptic/Atari's lead. My main worry is that this works for them and EA decide to go the same way with SW:TOR. There are already rumours that the game will be MT-based, but I really hope its an old-fashioned subscription system that is in place.

Quote from the interview: MMORPG.com: Star Trek Online will require a subscription fee to play, but also gives players access to the Cryptic Store. What items are offered in the store and how does it affect gameplay?
STO Team: It's fairly limited right now. It will include the Ferengi and Klingon races to be playable for the Federation side at launch. We want to get an idea of what players want before adding much more. But we're sticking to the notion that if it affects gameplay, there will be ways of attaining whatever is available in the store in-game.
Vast majority of offers give out 500 CP along with purchase so it is really no big deal.
so........you can't create your own race...like this video shows www.youtube.com/watch but for the low low price of $$$$ you can purchase one of theirs?
Pretty soon you'll have to pay additional money just to get out of the noobie zone.
They'll make you pay every time you fire phasers. There'll be an "entrance fee" to get into Quark's (I hope you made reservations, the waiting list is long.) You'll be charged for bug fixes.
I'm only half joking. I wouldn't be surprised if this actually happened.
They will charge for everything they think will sell - without turning off too many customers.
What a lot of posters here need to learn is that business is an antagonistic relationship. It is in the companies' interest to provide as little as possible while taking in as much money as possible. The companies exist to make money - not games. Games are just the particular type of widgets they are selling. It might as well be bread, or paper clips, or crack.
Sure, there are creative people in the business trying to do good work, but they are not the ones making the business decisions.
Cryptic (and every other company) wants your money - not your friendship.
Yes I know they want my money. But now and probably ever after they will not get any of it at all.
And if that is a smart business decision then more power to em.
I knew this was going to be the case with STO and its why I did not buy it.

Your pick was rather unfortunate in this case.
Following this logic, an ultra, ultra rare drop constitutes "ways of attaining whatever is available in the store, in-game"
I love steak, so when I heard that a famous steak restaurant was opening up, I rushed over there.
As I walked in, they handed me some finger foods, steak fingers, and wings. I said, "ok, where's the real steak? I'm hungry!"
"Well, they said, the steak isn't ready yet, so we are letting you try our other finger foods."
I thought to myself, ok, that's nice, I get a snack for free! Then they asked me for the money for the first steak ... "special deal if I order the steak now!" Hmm, I haven't really seen the menu yet, but they tell me I have to pre-order the steak, before actually seeing the menu.
So I thinks, well, it is a famous steak place, so sure, I'll go ahead and pay before getting my food.
Then, "WHAT!?! This isn't steak at all!!!! It's a friggin' hamburger is all!!" to which they reply "sir, it is beef, same as steak."
So I settle down, after already paying for steak. "So, ok, put some ketchup and mustard on that then."
"Sorry sir, those are extra. You get a plain dry hamburger for a steak price, and the condiments are all extra. Ketchup is only a dollar."

You forgot the big IF at the begining of your assumption and than big CAN in the middle...
The fact that Cryptic is charging people extra money to play a Ferengi as a playable race, is such perfect irony, that all you can do is laugh. Probably the only true use of IP in there.....

I bought a lifetime subscription so I don't have a monthly payment to worry about. I doubt I'll respec more than once a month (if even that often).
I've been playing for about 4 days now and I'm having fun.
Did I pay a lot of money? Yes.
Do I regret it? No.
Would I pay more? Yes.
Just because you pay a subscription doesn't mean they're not going to try selling you on more crap. Everyone who already had a WoW account still had to shell out to get Wrath. DAoC players had to shell out to get expansions too (even though half of those expansions are now given away for free).
Think of this as a mini expansion that's proportionally cheaper.
Originally posted by xoring Think of this as a mini expansion that's proportionally cheaper.
It's not at ALL proportionately cheaper.
Expansions are what, 30 bucks? For 3 dollars or so you get a Klingon skin and two Klingon abilities for a Federation officer. That's it. There's no special Federation Klingon starting area, no special content for them at all beyond the skin and two abilities. That's NOT 10% of any remotely decent expansion at all. Heck, that's not even 10% of a decent content patch. It's proportionately far, far more expensive.
Pretty soon you'll have to pay additional money just to get out of the noobie zone.

To get my money, they need to earn my patronage by providing a quality entertainment service. Somewhere along the line this basic business concept seems to have been misplaced.
Some companies make a name for themselves via quality and excellence in customer service. Other companies also make a name for themselves for exactly the opposite reasons, but it's not a name that will help them succeed.

WHY ALL THE WHINING?
Most of you complaning don't even play the game, and if you do play the game think about this:
1. Only one race, nothing else to choose from. 1 race, period
OR
2. P(l)ayable races, at least you have the OPTION of choosing a different race, its better then nothing obviously.
I don't defend cryptic nor do i play any of their games (TBH i did like STO, but i just dislike ST, alot :P)
i admit cryptic is purely after money here, and it sucks to pay for new races, but at least there ARE new races....
Lol.
To me, its really inexcusable for a Pay to Play MMORPG to charge money for additional races.
Seriously, rot in hell, Cryptic.
