Below is a thread I started on the STO forums. Please go there and contribute, so Cryptic knows our feelings on the matter and makes the right decision. I'll include the actual post for ease of reading.
forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php
I really like STO, and aside from the disconnects, errors, and server downtime, I don't have any complaints.
The reason for this thread, is that I was reading a thread on mmorpg.com about Cryptic selling new content/zones through their C-Store. Someone said that they lack content in some levels, and that they'll sell content through the C-Store to cover that defficiency.
I don't know if what I'm reading is true, but I'd like to know Cryptics plans for future content. Will they be releasing content patches, will they release expansions, or will they require us to buy new content off their C-Store.
In my opinion, if there is a defficiency in content in STO, it should be corrected for free. After all, we did pay for the game to be complete from lvl 1 to lvl 45. What are we getting for $15/mo? Most companies include some content updates and future feature releases in that fee, along with bugs and stability fixes, and server and customer support access.
I'd like the truth of what Cryptic is planning regarding this from Cryptic themselves and also I'd like to know what you all think about all of this. As I said, I'm currently enjoying the game and have no complaints, other than stability, so I'm looking to play this game for a long time to come, so I'm hoping Cryptic makes the ethical decision here.

bad part is in the eula it states that anytime an update comes available your reneweing your lease and they dont have to give you the update kinda weird
The rumor that you will have to buy additional zones and levels, etc. is a complete load of crap made up by people who think that any sale of game content is "EVIL". They have said many times that everything sold in the C-Store will be either non-gameplay affecting (like races, costumes, pets, etc.) and if something goes in that does (say they added a special rare weapon perhaps) that it WOULD BE OBTAINABLE THROUGH NORMAL GAMEPLAY as well. This is not an item mall; it's not like the DDO Store either. They have little extras planned to be offered for those people who like "shiney" items/social gadgets and gizmos.
People need to quit making up things and posting their fears everywhere as if it's fact.
It's already stated here that the next content patch is free. We'll see what happens afterward.

Its not a complete load of crap. Its the absolute truth..if your playing Champions Online. The OP"s quoted poster is obviously mixing up the games.
Now...that doesn't mean that STO won't do the same thing in the future. Infact I'm more than sure when people realize how shallow the game is they'll be like wheres our free content! THey'll get some crappy couple of quest lines (like Champions did) and then eventually a single new planet / zone (like champions), and maybe a single free new pvp map (like champs), they'll even get some seasonal events which turn into a boring uber grind fest (like champs), and then when all looks bleak or atleast is starting to not feel as awsome anymore they'll be like "new Zone! Covers 3 levels of game play and its not Free". Just like Champs.
So far they're following the same patterns the only difference is there's alot more STO die hards / fanbois so they wont feel the heat nearly as fast as they did Champs. Infact it might actually work in STO since the ship to ship combat is far more exciting and involved then Champions easy to make yourself OP'd pvp format.
Ship Combat and the Star Trek name will keep STO a viable but niche game for quite along time....of course that doesn't mean I have to like it or play it so....I voted with my wallet after the hell treatment I've recieved playing Champions.
I think you all need to check C-Store for Champions Online to consider yourself what this ebil company is 'charging' you for...
http://www.champions-online.com/store
Cryptic did this with Champs Online. That's why the OP is bringing it up. CO is selling actual content through their C-store. If they'll do that with CO, why WOULDN'T they do it with STO? They both charge the same sub fee.
That said, the missing content (coming soon) to get to 45 is supposed to be free, they said so. I'll be interested to find out it they charge for content from level 45-50, seeing as those levels were intended to be shipped with the game. I guess only time will tell.
The CO "expansion" is particularly dubious because it fills a leveling gap for levels that the game shipped with; it doesn't EXPAND anything. Imagine if a single player game shipped without the final level of the game, then sold it as DLC.
Actually, that rumour is based on the fact that this is exactly what Cryptic is doing for Champions Online. Look up the paid zone Vibora Bay to understand what everyone is talking about.
Considering the revenue model for STO is so far the same as the revenue model for CO, so what happens in CO may very well happen in STO. It's a genuine concern.
Asside from the CO point that has been made ihave to ask if the content is already available within the game and seeing as how everyone pays a monthly sub, why are our subs paying someone to code the new content then being asked to pay again to for the content. It makes no sense, if its already there and we're already paying for it why stick it in an item store. As for adding fluff into the store the same applies, we are already paying for the dev working on this to be codeing the content, so wether its fluff or not why are we being charged twice for it. If you don't see that as a con then there is something seriously wrong and if thats the future of mmo's I hope to god the indies can get a foothold.

First off don't believe anything you read here, this website is notorious for misleading information being expressed as fact.
On topic, if they do what they did with CO they'll wind up with the same result, a game with a rapidly decaying player base and no future.
Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy
I don't think the fallout from the PAID CO content update has fully materialized yet. Whatever happens there will definately have an impact on STO. If people (what people are left playing CO that is) pay up for the content, then Cryptic will have the motivation to try the same tatic with STO. If not, then they will probably be more open to releasing free content in order to maintain their subscription base. I found the offering of "Lifetime" subs prior to the launch of the game to be a little insidious. I am hoping that the number of lifetime subscribers is only a very small poriton of the total subscriber base as it will force Cryptic to be more attentive to keeping STO players satisfied rather than taking their money and running with it. However, I look at WoW and many other MMOs which have major expansions about once per year and players don't seem to blink when it comes to paying for them. So I guess I have to ask, what is the lesser of two evils: paying $10 for 6 smaller content expanions, or paying $60 for one big content expanison with the same amount of total content? I personally think both methods are evil as our $15/month is SUPPOSED to be paying for this stuff anyway. I mean, the whole promise of MMO's was that our monthly fees would be going to fund continued development and expansion over the lifetime of the product...not just to pay for server hosting fees (which is miniscule and which most non-MMO games these days don't even charge for). So you can't really just blame Cryptic 100% on this one.

And yet the races on offer right now DO effect gameplay, and they CAN'T be attained in game...

So this kinda blows the basis of your point apart, right at the first product they offer. Lies right from the start... why would you have faith in or trust anything else they say?
Briht, I get that you like this game, but you don't owe Cryptic a living by working to defend their lies and profiteering.

I don't see how klingons and Ferengi officers effect gameplay? Other than asthetically I mean.
As for DLC, we better hell get some good stuff free. I understand selling areas in the C store content wise. (It's just the same as buying an expansion really.) I think it's far too early to start assuming though. Personally I'd just like to see more end game content (No im not there yet.) Elaboration on the exploration side of things, make it deeper! Finally, last but definately not least, we need stuff for player fleets, their own system, starbase, whatever. Make it customizable.
Cryptic would do well to address those issues. Maybe even attempt to make a crafting system lol.
Longing for Skyrim, The Old Republic and Mass Effect 3

My advice is to follow the link.
omg. WoW, have expansions, Guild Wars too, almost everyone does.... whats the big deal of selling a mini expansion for a few bucks????
People generally don't mind paying for content expansions if they perceive the original game to be value for money.
I guess people think Cryptic release games that are extremely light on content when launched and do not represent good value for money.
So they complain about paying for 'extra'.
I hope this helps clarify it for you
I was watching the Champions store, and i didnt notice any "Content selling bs"
Only the standard crap that even guild wars sell... by the way some of this stuff should be redundant, like u can buy it right now... or do tons of things in the game to get it, example: the respec lol...
Checking facts or thinking is something you can't really expect from most of the people.
It was countless time pointed out that C-Store is nothing unusual or affecting gameplay but people just keep ranting as they do on other STO so called 'issues'...

Apparently neither of you read the announcement about CO's new zone that you'll have to pay for. It covers the last 4 character levels (doesn't raise the cap), and they are calling it an expansion. They've had no free content other than an event and they are now charging for what other P2P games do for free.

You are just speaking for yourself it seems.
People have posted repeatedly on this and proven it otherwise (already!) yet you ignore it because it dosent fit your perception.
Offering additional races at launch for sale IS 'unusual' in a sub based MMORPG, and they DO affect gameplay.
Look, go here... http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/268243/page/15
Read it and then carry on saying the same thing as you was before, as I know you will. Forums on the internet arnt for actually changing anyone's mind, I know.

And my advice is don't state false facts about a game you don't play or know anything about. As I've already explained on a dozen threads those bonuses CAN be aquired in game... the Ferengi bonuses by creating an alien with the same bonus traits, and the klingon by rolling regular Klingon.
I'm really tired of explaining this to people that don't play and aren't interested in playing STO, but at the same time it's not fair of to spread completely false information to people who might be.

Now the life-time subscribers are up-in-arms over Cryptic. Well, those folks investing in a shallow product will continue to be milked, along with everyone else. It has been repeatedly reported that the Cryptic business model is one of milking whatever subscribers are left.
IMO the failboat has already sailed and it's too late for this game. It's just fundamentally flawed...you can't build a mansion on the cracked foundation of a shanty. The best hope for the future of a Trek MMO is for this game to have a quick, merciful death so a company that knows what it's doing can get the license and make a real Trek MMO.
The C-store will most likely be used to sell "trinklets" and not game content. People who say that the store is gonna sell game updates or content is prob talking out thier cornhole. Where is the proof or evidence that they are gonna sell content via C-store?

A) Not a lifetime subscriber. Expect to be Admiral with a well decked shipped by the time my sub lapses.
Will have a lot fo fun getting there.
C) Will re-up for new content later. Unless they don't in which case I still had fun while it lasted.
D) Do this with all my MMOs.
E) Bought the most basic version available at the Atari store which included no pre-order bonuses.
F) Kinda wish they'd actually put something in Cryptic Store I cared enough about to spend my FREE bonus points.
