I really don't think so.  I think most of them would have been too young or laughed at the idea as being really nerdy.
Things change fast sometimes and I think this will be another thing that goes from being a small niche market to something much larger very fast in the next 5 years.
At one point MMO's were small niche market games.
At one point PC games were a small niche market.
At one point the video game industry was a small niche market.
PvP based games are growing, ffa type games are growing, it will happen.
The first developer to pull it off right will be the next Blizzard.

Not quite, because the game industry is caught in a parabola.

It used to be video games were niche, then PC games, then MMOs... but do you notice the progression breaks further down into sub-genres?

Now video games are huge, but racing games, arcade fighters, puzzle and everything else fall into their own niche. Especially seeing how saturated the MMO market is... and now you have niches in WoW-clones, FPSMMOs, etc. MMOs are no longer niche, only the subdivisions of genres (all the way down to fantasy/sci-fi) are what people are looking for specifically. You're not going to see another world of warcraft because the entirety of the MMO playerbase now has it's mind setup one whether they prefer PvE/PvE, themepark/sandbox, action/strategy, etc. You are going to have to be happy that a game reaches 250k subs and keeps it past launch with how much selection there is these days.

I don't disagree at all. But the evidence is such that most games only reach 200k or so subs anyways.

Take wow out of the equation and some of the asian f2p's and there aren't many games who retain much more.

But as anyone who has seen any of my posts might notice, I argue from the standpoint that none of this is new and it has all has evidence throughout the history of media.

I mean, you don't just have jazz anymore. There's fusion and free jazz and a whole lot of subdivisions I probably don't know of.

Movies? horror used to be more about monsters and supernatural and now it's about cutting people up a la "the hills have eyes" with all sorts of subdivisions.

None of this is new. If people truly want to see what is going to happen to gaming look no farther than the history of your favorite media type.

It's not called pop music for nothing.

I don't know which form PvP will take in an Elder Scrolls MMO, but I'm sure it will be there.  The studio actually making the game (which actually hasn't even been confirmed as ES, only rumored), is ZeniMax Online Studios, a sister studio to Betheesda, owned under the ZeniMax Media umbrella.  There is sure to be lots of cross-work between them though if it is indeed an ES MMO.

That said, if we are looking for the "feel" of the game to be like Oblivion or Morrowind, please understand that Ken Rolston, the game designer for those two games now works for 38 Studios.  The man heading up ZeniMax Online, and this MMO is Matt Firor formerly of Mythic / DAoC.  Many people loved the PvP in that game.  That doesn't necessarily say much as to the future direction of these games, but it does give us a little idea as to where the talent is coming from.

From complete quests, raid dungeons, join guilds, makes potions and a whole mess of random stuff.

Not only will these other players be a complete buzz kill, They also won't know how to act.
Tes is a sandbox game and we all know what happens in these games when you give these players too much freedom.
Last time I checked when I left a major city in Oblivion I didn't have 50+ other knights trying to kill me and loot me.
Think about it for a second. You go into a town with your stealthy character and try to rob a house. Oh you can't!! Someone already robbed that one, and the next, and the next......
I just don't see a game like this working because other people suck!
Disagree? Ever play UO? Eve? DF? AC or EQ pvp server? people will grief and generally be asshats just to ruin your day.
TES is a sandbox game what is bethesda going to do to stop these nimrods from ruining the game? Make it pve only?
These players will take advantage of every little exploit, grief 24/7 and generally get in the way.
Wanna explore that dungeon? To late player 10101012223245 already cleared it. Wanna go pick some flowers for alchemy? To bad that area is filled with a hundred freaking bots!
You guys try it if you want to but I would rather replay TES 1 through 4 single player that run into "Ionwzurmomz!!!" while exploring for an artifact or having to worry about a gank squad named peanut butter jelly time trying to ruin my day.

Love this post and they're all around. There was a bug in Dawntide the other day that somehow allowed PK'ing in a non-PVP areas....some JERK...and yes I say jerk... whom also had the ability to somehow become invisible took advantage of it went around just killing everyone and get this...using the name raging homo, killer perv and sick mexican fortunately the bug didn't allow looting so his escapades were senseless and only to grief ...you know when you see names like this in a game they are there for one purpose and one purpose only. To upset the experience for other players..."peanut butter jelly time...LMAO.

Getting old is mandatory...growing up is optional.

I completely agree. PvP looting corpses is the worst feature ever. No game with that feature will ever be a massive success. I have been thinking about how I would like my TES Online. Even though I am a huge fan of (World) PvP, I am not sure I wouldlike pvp in the current form that Oblivion is, and I certainly not like any form for PvP looting either.

Make us care MORE about our faction & world pvp!

Correct.  He went into retirement after Oblivion, but Big Huge Games enticed him to work on a "revolutionary" single player RPG which he couldn't pass up.  When Big Huge Games was about to be canned, 38 Studios bought them out, along with Ken and the RPG they were working on.  My understanding is that he is continuing work on this RPG codenamed Ascendant, while helping with game design on both 38 Studio's single player RPG based on the Copernicus IP, AND their MMO.

I don't know about you, and I haven't really heard this discussed at all, but this is pretty huge news for Copernicus, considering how many people think Elder Scolls Morrowind and Oblivion are some of the best RPG games ever.  Makes me all the more interested in both the single player RPGs and the Copernicus MMO coming out of 38 Studios.

But that said, I thought DAoC was pretty awesome, and Matt Firor is definitely no slouch to be heading up ZeniMax Online's efforts.  Bethesda/Zenimax still have lots of talent and I'm really looking forward to what they have been working on.

I just started playing 4 again and I thought about this and thought it would be a bad idea too. I much rather see TES 5 then a mmo for two reasons.

1 I want to be able to do what I want like in the current games. This gets in the way of everyone elses gaming.

2 Game world would have to be HUGE to accomdate a lot people for this game play meaning lots of redundant and simple gameplay.

3 I like having my own story and not being the millionth to save the world of kill the biggest baddie(LK) I mean I like mmos and some are ok with this but TES crafts a epic story and I think some epicness would be greatly be taking away if you just did something and right after some guy in chat says he just did too.

To make a good TES mmo they would have to drop the basic TES gameplay and create something new just keeping TES lore. All I know is that we should see something about what Bethesda is doing next at E3 this year as their was a comment from the author of the new TES book saying that it somewhat bridges the gap between 4 and the next game.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

I know what you mean but give them a chance at least , They are professionals the gameplay will not be the same as the other elder scrolls for sure , there's already a difference between morrowind and oblivion , I have faith in their skills and I'm sure if there's a way to make this game work they will find it . Just give them a chance. Its the least you can do with all the good games they made so far for all of us.

WoW already does all this.  To replace WoW requires writers, not dumb pvp maps.  I can save them $250,000 right now.  Do something new, or start working on the phrase, "Do you want cheese with that?"

I think if done right any MMO can be successful. An open sandbox is very viable. However, you can't think they will take Oblivion and port it to be multiplayer because then you would be spot on right in how bad it could become.
I say give them a little credit and wait for some info before busting out the fire and brimstone.

I've been thinking about the OP's original Post, and He does have some points, though a lot of anger in them too lol.

I think 'Borderlands' would be a better online gameplay model for TES games that a full MMO. Why?

1.) TES combat is much more real-time than most MMO-based combat systems which have to deal with larges amounts of latency and end up being click the skill and 'wait your turn' for it to go off. I liked where the combat went in Oblivion, personally....

2.) I do like that, for this one game (a TES game), the world kind of revolves around me. I'd would be totally awesome to be able to invite friends of your choosing...I like mmo's and I am used to a ton of strangers running around.....but Occasionally, i do enjoy being selfish, with the world to myself. /shrug

I really don't mind an MMO in THE Elder Scrolls universe, so long as it doesn't preclude any more single/multiplayer versions of the same in the style of Morrowind and Oblivion.

My only concern for an Elder Scrolls MMO is that they will dumb down the series yet again. In every game they cut skills and make the world smaller, but they update the grafics. If the MMO they create has the same size world as Arena, the skills of Daggerfall or Arena, and better grafics than Oblivion I may play. I have never played Oblivion. I have played the other 3 ES games. I never played Oblivion because after playing Morrowwind for awhile, I swore that I won't buy any ES games that are dumbed down any further, and Oblivion was dumbed down even more. I hate this trend of dumbing down of games, it happens in MMOs and in first person PC/Console games.

I don't know where you got that from.

I'm saying griefing wouldn't fit the elder scrolls IP not that I want to do it.

When I think elder scrolls I think freedom to solo, explore, create spells, quest for guilds not being killed by 20 dudes waiting outside a main capital to kill me over and over.

None of this matters anyway TES online will probably be a Pve only game anyway. We need one of those anyway. Last really good pve centric mmo was AC1.
