So long, Ubisoft. I will never buy such a product. If PC gaming ever evolves to the point where all games require this, then I will become a software pirate, which I have never geen. I have been video gaming for thirty years and have tons of games in boxes, including some on cassette and old gigantic floppies. So, if you go ahead with this Ubi, I have only three words for you. Go F*ck yourself.
Agreed.
I understand wanting to stop piracy, but measures like this will simply create more pirates.
I will not be turned into a game renter. I'll either own the content that I purchase and be able to access at any time and method of my choosing, or I won't buy it.
There's plenty of old games I never got around to, not to mention other hobbies.
its not a bad deal it just means once the control check is done no more hotspot shield and other tech doing all kind of loop as for thinking about the disconnect thing, ubisoft is also in montreal (in the part of the world i live, assassin creed is made there) and isconnet is so low that it is the best idea i ever saw implented unless they added a thing invasive (i really doubt that!basicly if their server doesnt receive what they need from your game without hickup ,byby hacker!i could be wrong here but i think this is one techno that will spread. unless i missunderstood how they will use this?
Your connection must be up all times. Want to play offline? Can't.
Internet down? Can't play.
Playing and you lose connection? Lose your place in the game, back to the last save. Its just silly.
The reason why its stupid is that they are punishing people who pay for the game and encouraging piracy, because when it is pirated, the pirates will have a better ver of the game than the people who paid.
ok i ll take me as an exemple i live in quebec canada(french part of america)
do you know how many time a disconnection happened here
once in the last 5 years
ubisoft montreal (60 miles from here)is making assassin cread.and they know it happen so infrequantly
the chance you hit a server down because of outage is almost nil
it will almost always be maintenance.there is no penalty for being out of internet you just cant access the game
disconnection will be so rare you have more chance of being struck by lighning lol
in the south like gotgia ,alabama(basicly storm country !it will happen fairly often but in those accassion i bet they ll be busy boarding their howse for the next hurricane anyway so its not a big issue!
Pretty sick to say pirate "gamers" would never buy the games anyway so they shouldn't stop them, it's like saying why stop crime if there will be people committing them anyway. What they want to do is stop people that aren't paying for the game from playing the game, it's that simple.
For example I feel like a purist idiot sometimes purchasing Wii games that barely have internet gameplay, if any, while some friends have their modded Wiis and download games freely. And that's because I want to support the company that makes the games I play.
I have internet access 24/7 so shouldn't really affect me, I can see this being an issue for some though. I wonder if there are some statistical numbers on things like people who have 24/7 internet access versus people who don't (be that dial-up or some other reason).
Blizzard is also going this way with the new Battle.Net "always connected" experience, which makes me think they are indeed aware of the pros and cons.
The point is, they kill offline gameplay, but will they really kill or greatly reduce piracy?
Now that my nerd rage has given way to logical thinking for a moment, I'm willing to bet that the primary reason they're doing this isn't to stop piracy.
This is the first salvo in the campaign to turn all gaming to a subscription based model, regardless of whether it's single-player, offline, or whatever. If they can turn off your game anytime they want, you're a renter instead of an owner, and they can start charging for all kinds of things that have heretofore been included in the $60.00 purchase price.
It's really quite insidious, and stopping pirates would just be happy collateral.
Stuff like this shows just how out of touch the "suits" that make decisions are about this genre.
If you've spent more than 5 minutes in this genre, you know this will be effective for about 5 minutes after release. The only people that will be kept honest are the ones that are honest already.
Seriously, who sits in a board room and thinks this stuff is a good idea? As already stated, this does more to drive off honest customers than it does to keep pirates out. It's been shown time and time again not to work.

Unfortunately, this is it in a nutshell. It's the equivalent of buying a car, but the dealer gets to keep it at the lot. All this will do is annoy any customers that do or would buy the games into chasing refunds or avoiding thier products entirely. Meanwhile, pirates will be playing without all the hassle.
Losing theoretically potential sales to pirates is one thing, but losing certain sales is a completely different ballgame.

That wouldn't make much sense as stopping you from playing their game makes no money for them and, being a business, money is of great interest to them. I'm willing to believe that their actual intent, as indicated, is to turn a would-be pirate into a would-be paying customer.

I approve this message. People rationalize pirating any way they can. But the BOTTOM LINE, is that it KILLS GOOD GAME COMPANIES. I'm happy that they are pushing copy-right protection and trying new things. Like any transition there will be resistance, and those who feel betrayed. But in the end this is the RIGHT thing to do.
Let me tell you a story,
Back in 1977 there was a thing called VHS!!!!! and some people tought it could bankrupt the moive industry at the time, cause it gave people acsess to copying movies.
Well since then, has the movie industry gone broke? no its ended up making even more cause of 2 reasons.
1.People that are going to copy are going to copy no matter what
2.If you make good products people will still buy them and you won't lose money.
The BOTTON LINE IS THAT Pirating games does not kill game companys, bad mangment and bad products and bad company policy dose. Quick blaming others FOR YOUR SHORTCOMMINGS.
Excuses are like a-holes, everyone has one........

Stopping people from playing the game without paying does imply that, the choice of purchasing the game is forced on the person.
And seeing F2P item malls along with other things like desirable items pricing being successful, it does hint a lot of people fold to the desire and give the cash, it's an instinct after all.
The conspiracy idea from onetruth does seem possible though, and we're still not getting many guarantees here - if this authentication server ever gets shut off due to lack of demand, will they still let us play offline?
And we're still not getting decent and reliable ways to evaluate the game ourselves like demos and trials.

there is also the issue that even though you have paid for the game, it still does not belong to you, at any time they want, for whatever reason, they can stop the game from playing, permanently. its all very well having a game that requires authentication online when installed, its quite another that requires continous online authentication, when that service itself can be interrupted, or removed, the whole thing is based on a deeply flawed premise, and rather than reducing the amount of piracy, will more than likely, promote it, as legitimate buyers will, quite rightly, shie away from buying a product, that will not in fact, belong to them.

Not goning to read through this thread as I have seen a hundred of them today and they all say the same thing.
If the gaming community showed the same level of outrage at piracy we would not see the need for these kind of protection systems. The igly truth ias that computer gamers have encouraged a community of thieves. I have heard all the various arugments but no amount of justification makes a thief less a thief.
The companies putting these protection schemes on their games are not nealry as much to blaim as the gaming community itself which not only looks the other way at piracy but openly encoruages it.
Another DRM attempt that will be hacked-n-cracked within a week.
Another DRM attempt that hurts legit users and does nothing to piraters.
This behavior is not new and neither will the result be new.
This is not the first time this type of DRM has been introduced. It will not be the last. None of them will affect piracy in any way whatsoever. All of them will treat legit users like garbage.
Its this type of behavior that is chasing legit consumers into piracy. The penalty for legality is worse than the problem it is trying to cure. This has been true in all forms of DRM and will continue to be.

I dunno what part of the gaming community you hang out in, but everyone I know IRL and in game cannot stand pirates, gold sellers, etc and want companies to do everything reasonable to stop them. This though, is not reasonable.
Your whole tirade about the gaming community openly encouraging pirates is pure bullocks! If anything, the developers are pushing players to pirate so they can get better, hassle free versions of the games they want.

My mistake. I read the comment "it's that simple" as meaning there was no intent beyond stopping someone from playing. Sorry for the confusion on that. That said, the implication still seems to return to every pirated game equals a lost sale which I don't believe to be a universal truth as I think a number of pirated games could be chalked up to "crimes of convenience" more so then malicious intent. The difference between "that might be fun to check out" versus "I want this game really bad and don't want to pay for it". Just my thoughts on it though, I could be completely wrong.

me i only have one beef against this piece of technology!it open one dorr i hate with all my heart
it opens the door to send you publicity!intel call ubisoft they make a deal, you receive publicity by the shit load
even tho you dont want it .that the one thing that will keep me out of the ubisoft title
and since the laws against spam or publicity are so shady and weak might as well not have any
i would rater stay with companys that dont spam too much junk, this is one issue i didnt like about blizzard
you would go to the forum of player and you would be spammed by publicity ,if i want to be flooded with publicity i ll come here lol at least i ll see mmo advertisement ,not the new brand of kotex teicker softer blabla bla!

This is the one thing I can never get,
So lets say I go out and buy a new 2010 Ford Exploer, I pay 30k to the dealership and drive home. 3 years later Its payed off and I own the title and everythig is great.
Well a year later Ford comes back and takes my car from me, says I never owned it I just bought acsess to there car.......
Whats wrong with that???????? its not fair and its not right.....
When you buy somthing, its yours!!!!! you buy the rights to the car/music/games. In a nutshell you buy that property and it becomes YOURS, no matter what any TOS or lawyer or Judge says its YOURS!!!!!!

but yet we let politicians make rules and "govern" people, though we all know they are all thiefs,
only reason we don't want this is we don't want to be bound to a will of a 3rd party after I paid for something, if I will be ok with this I will pay for they games and do nothing, or I could not pay for then and keep fighting against something I don't like and change it (what people should do too in real life but that is another topic), but also I can harm then a little(a wishfull thinking) pirating they game and toss it on they face saying you FAIL.
Yeah Ubisoft is really tough in matters of copy protection. I liked the demo of their Anno 1404 a lot, which I tried half a year ago or so, and considered buying it. Then I read about the copy protection and of course changed my mind.

Losing theoretically potential sales to pirates is one thing, but losing certain sales is a completely different ballgame.
dhayes68 posted the comment you linked !me i think its a great move the only player that wont like this on average once its applied and player see how the feature is will be pirate
since the vast majority have acces to at least a dial up connection
it wont be a big issue .me im all for this techno(IF IT EVOLVE AND KEEP PIRATE OUT)
since theres no use implementing this only to let it be a static techno that pirate will have bypassed in 2 month max!
Are you 10 yrs old?
grin!arent we all?
Not goning to read through this thread as I have seen a hundred of them today and they all say the same thing.
If the gaming community showed the same level of outrage at piracy we would not see the need for these kind of protection systems. The igly truth ias that computer gamers have encouraged a community of thieves. I have heard all the various arugments but no amount of justification makes a thief less a thief.
The companies putting these protection schemes on their games are not nealry as much to blaim as the gaming community itself which not only looks the other way at piracy but openly encoruages it.

I have a soap box and I am not afraid to use it.

That wouldn't make much sense as stopping you from playing their game makes no money for them and, being a business, money is of great interest to them. I'm willing to believe that their actual intent, as indicated, is to turn a would-be pirate into a would-be paying customer.

ImageShack.us
but yet we let politicians make rules and "govern" people, though we all know they are all thiefs,
only reason we don't want this is we don't want to be bound to a will of a 3rd party after I paid for something, if I will be ok with this I will pay for they games and do nothing, or I could not pay for then and keep fighting against something I don't like and change it (what people should do too in real life but that is another topic), but also I can harm then a little(a wishfull thinking) pirating they game and toss it on they face saying you FAIL.
Yeah Ubisoft is really tough in matters of copy protection. I liked the demo of their Anno 1404 a lot, which I tried half a year ago or so, and considered buying it. Then I read about the copy protection and of course changed my mind.
