Aventurine has announced that they are now offering a seven day trial for Darkfall. There is a bit of a catch, however: the trial isn't free. Instead, you'll have to pony up a dollar to give the game a spin.
Go here to get started if you're from North America, or here if you're playing from Europe.

Interesting, I was willing to pay up to a $5 to be discounted from the $50 if I decided to purchase the game, but for ONE dollar, that's even better.
The time for me to try Darkfall has come... for $1.
I came home today, willing to buy the game, and there I saw the trial offer. Well, what can I say? With the upcoming big guns 'Cata, FF and TERA', this is a great opportunity for Aventurine to bolster their playerbase. 'Hell, it was about time!'

That's fair. I'll give it a shot.
Even if you end up hating the game, you can't beat a weeks worth of entertainment for only a buck. Really no excuse not to try the game at this point.

This is great news. I know lots of players hesitant to jump in without a trial, now they have no excuse. I am sure they will be hooked.
Yup, the time for excuses has come to an end folks. If you've been even mildly interested in this game, now is the time.

Reminds me of porn subscriptions, but really, what's the point of the dollar charge?
EDIT: Nevermind, stupid question.
I wondered that as well, even though a dollar isn't bad at all. Every other game company gives out a free trial, looks to me that AV needs some money so why not charge a dollar for a trial. If you don't like it they made money if you do like it they just made even more money.

Wrong answer. This is to force a valid credit card transaction, thus preventing the majority of spammers, hackers and farmers into the game. This is not going to make them rich beyond measure.

I highly doubt they want to profit off trials, this should hardly even cover the credit card operation fee.
The reason I believe they set the $1 cost is for reducing abuse of the trial - though they did NOT restrict player trade with trials (or at least they haven't specified any restrictions), so it may turn the argument that trials would result in a massive abuse of hacking on alt accounts true, but for $1 each time or at least these abusers will need to commit one credit card fraud per trial, making it easier to track and legally enforce the said abuser.
OMG! ...7 day trial for a buck in Darkfall, that is indeed a swwwweeet deal
/sarcasm off
Seriously though, they will have to offer a buck instead if they want more costumers.
The overwhelmingly positive posts on three separate threads disagree with your assessment.

Yeah I guess that would make sense. Like someone else said, the processing fees might cost that much as well. I didn't think about that.
Sounds like a good time to give Darkfall a try. Good timing too since the MMO scene is so blah right now.

You'll still have to patch.
You may also have to convert the client to the NA/EU version. Not sure which version the site has.
US client direct download http://www.us1.darkfallonline.com/dl/DarkfallUS.exe.
Downloads the client then the client patches and downloads everything through itself.
I can't find a direct download for the EU client, but I know there is one.
Then don't play. I'd rather have people who want to try the game out that are willing to shill out a WHOLE dollar than a bunch of whiners and gold spammers.

Thing is, you need an active account to download through the patcher. Since trials only get 7 days, he wants the client ready to go before buying an account.
I rather buy a cheeseburger from McDonalds dollar menu than DFO Trial:P
LOL...now i know why the trial is only 7 days....WILL TAKE THAT LONG TO DOWNLOAD THE CLIENT. I made the fatal error of purchasing the $1.00 trial and THEN starting the download. The site explains a little later on in the process that you should NOT do it in this order...DOH.
So anyway....paid the dollar...downloaded the torrent...started the download....estimated time of completion!??.....6 days...and this is on a high speed dsl line!
Man oh man...it is 2010....and this game STILL uses a torrent to download!!??.....tsk tsk tsk.
Now to wait and see if i get to play at all for my dollar.
Well, a torrent is a torrent. A fast way for people without DSL to get something without them shelling out money for servers to host the download from. I think I got the client in about two hours from the torrent.

Took me an hour and a half roughly. *shrug*
I suppose dial up or a low speed connection would be a bad thing to play Darkfall with lol.
