I wonder what it would be, if you had to pick from any mmo ever made?
The Sleeper in EQ, maybe? I just chose that one because he wasn't supposed to be killable.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Algalon the Observer from WoW. Try beating Ulduar on heroic difficulty, then defeating Yag'Saron. Then Algalon! I would like to see ANY of you beat him. If you have, post your title name then I'll check your armory or something

Honestly Pve encounters start to bleed together after a while. everything is the same to me now.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
The Sleeper? EQ? I wouldn't even consider basic tank and spank "encounters", encounters.
There was a few bosses in FFXI that I heard took quite a bit of hours to kill. I don't know what criteria to use for "hard" though. My gut reaction is to say time consuming, but that's really just a cop out.

Because both of them were literally impossible. Can't get any harder than that

Overlord Mata Muram in EQ.
Everyone needed the mask to survive, everyone had to be perfectly time everything. Even after 2-3 expansions past, most guilds still had trouble dealing with him. It was a really fun but hard event to pull off.
Amen to that. No other boss fight can take decades
to win. (If its even possible to win thats still up for debate)
Anarchy Online pre-SL
Boss: General Vivian (the female dustbrigade commander) (name might be a bit wrong)
100+ people fighting her for 6 hours, and we could not beat her...
My god has horns.... nah, I don't think he is real either.
I think you'd actually need to be able to kill the boss to call it hard. Since any dev can make an unbeatable boss, but its not a hard fight unless the players are actually are capable of winning against it TBH.
Pandemonium Warden, Absolute Virtue, and the Dynamis: Xarcabard Shadowlord (without Chainspell Stun + TP burn strategy) from FFXI
I would say sleeper as well.
They threw hundreds of folks on the Zek server at it. Players supposedly lost 2 to 3 lvls during fight due to death touch. EQ1 had nasty exp penalty for dieing....it reduced to only like 4% with a click-stick(cleric epic)....that is how many times each person died(2 to 3 lvls worth).
Stations of clerics kept rezzing folks, and sleeper kept dropping them. It went on for hrs.
What makes it even more impressive is that they only had one chance to do it....Sleeper was a one time only per server spawn.
Being on Mithaniel Marr server, I used to follow the exploits of our local uber-guild Afterlife, and their main competitor Fires of Heaven.
Nothing these 2 guilds ever done though was as impressive as putting away PVP hostilites(PVP server) to get this once in a server lifetime opportunity.
I eventually got my key for ST, but my guild was a few yrs late to see the SLEEPER before he woke.
Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.
sleeper only spawned once? so if it got killed it was gone forever?
My god has horns.... nah, I don't think he is real either.
He was a one time event per server. If you started the event, nothing short of a GM could stop it. Once he got out, that was it, no more.
Currently playing EverQuest 2

Impossible to win.
You may stun her for a few seconds, but her debuff afterwards is terrible.
Clearly we have a winner here.

They had 3-4 dragons like that on EQ 2 as well i think, you got special titles if you were involved in killing one of em.

Sleeper wins easily, I believe the numbers were in the hundreds and the fight went on all night and into the morning. Not to mention hes only been successfully killed on like 1-2? servers
There was one boss in Vanguard who was a real bitch to kill.
Turned out he was impossible to kill. Like most things in Vanguard, he was bugged.
The hardest thing about raiding is getting a bunch of people to follow simple instructions. If you tell 40 people to run left, at least five will run right.
Well shave my back and call me an elf! -- Oghren
Nope... It's a FFXI boss. My brother told me about it and it's (IIRC) from the Dynamesis. The devs even had to make a movie showinghow it has to be killed and to proof it can be done.
So far, that boss has been killed only once on all servers in over a year....
Pandemonium Warden, first attempt of 18 hours realtime combat failed to take it down.
F2P/P2P excellent thread.

Algalon is fucking easy. Why do you think he's hard?

Never played EQ, and didn t get high enough in FFXI, but one boss I loved fighting and it took alot of people to beat was Legion in DAOC. Damn thing would port you somewhere in the dungeon and getting back wasn t always that easy
pretty much imbossible to many
Generation P
I used to love DAOC, played Hibernia. The Hib Dragon took forever and had to be nerfed before anyone could kill it. I remember our server getting close to 200 people to rush the dragon, all guilds showing up for the event multiple nights in a row. Druids chain rezzing and us never being able to take it down. One fire breath would kill the majority of the people. When you had that many people lag was insane, but I still remember it with fondness. The only time in my mmo history that I can remember that many people getting together for an event......(perhaps opening the gates to AQ was a close second in WoW.)
What criteria are we using? Are we talking about fights that are 'reasonably' beatable to fights designed to be unbeatable. Or would an unbeatable fight not count as 'hard'? Are we putting limits on the number of players or are zerg waves allowed as a 'strategy'?
There is a fine line between a 'hard' fight and a 'badly designed' fight.
