Everquest. Nothing beats it. Best community during its "time". No hand holding, no instant gradifictaion, meanful death penatly, fun and different classes, tons of different zones to explore and fighting in. My favorite part of the game is by far the fact that players feared death and due to this fact lead to some great moments that I still look back on and think "how did I not die?" Never had more fun in an MMO then I did playing EQ, I hope one day some developer makes a modern day MMORPG along the lines of EQ.
I completely agree with you! No game since has held my attention for even a fraction of the time EQ did. There were MANY times in that game where you seriously conisdered what you were about to do for fear of dying. Very few people just ran head first into zones like you can these days. The only thing I would say about Everquest is that you have to have a Pre and Post POP expansion. That ruined the game IMO which was a shame.
Lineage 2 for me. Been playing almost 5 years and nonthing has taken me away yet. Open World, Open PVP and a social aspect thats beyond any other mmo I have ever played. Graphics are still great and no other game has character models that look better when equiped with high level gear.
My favorite was Lord of the Rings Online (even though I'm not playing it right now), but it's not listed. I guess I'll put WOW since that is was initially got me addicted to Online Games.
ya lotro should be on the list too, But as with u i went with the mmo that got me into mmos FF11. WoW is a great game. People just need to stop compairing every other mmo to it, as wow was not the first mmo . as with mmos after wow, WoW as well toke its mechanics and such from predicecors too, heck the whole skill tree was taken from diablo 2 .

Curious EVE is last on that (meaningless) list. Curious, since the mmorpg.com editors voted en mass for that game as game of the year. Out of touch lately editors ?
mmorpg.com isnt the only site to give eve online its game of the year honors.
Anyway this poll doesn't matter the Darkfall and Eve fans must be you know playing the game.
Now will you please excuse me I need to go back to my spaceship.
As sad as I am to say it, World of Warcraft without a doubt.
I got more fun out of that than any other game I've ever played, not because of the game itself though.
I think it was because of my friends more than anything... either way there it is.
Playing: *sigh* back to WoW -------- Waiting for: SW:TOR, APB, WoD --------- Played and loved: Eve and WoW -------- Played and hated: WoW:WotLK, Warhammer, every single F2P
Whilst I loved EQ and still have fond memories of it, DAoC was the one that I truly LOVED for so many reasons. The community was great the whole concept of RvR was the ONLY time I have really liked pvp type play and the whole world was totally immersing. EQ was the original yes but it had too many "grrrrr..." moments to be a favourite game. TOO many corpse runs and camping for me
For me it's a toss up between two very different games: Ultima Online and World of Warcraft. I played UO for longer but voted WoW because I guess overall I think it was the better game. One thing I will say for UO is that I played for 4 years and have nothing but fond memories, no regrets. With WoW I felt somewhat disillusioned by the direction the game had taken. PS I think your list is pretty good but i'd have loved an 'Other' option just to see how many people liked games that wern't on the list at all.
That described me pretty perfectly, but I too...wish there was an "other" option, because if I had had the freedom to choose a game not on that list...I would have actually answered the poll. However, for myself as well....UO and WoW were both enjoyable to me, but I did leave WoW somewhat disillusioned, and I left UO for totally different personal reasons that had nothing to do with the game.
I think, for right now, I'd have to say EQ2 would get the "fave" spot for me IF....it was on the list...and IF...it was EQ2 more in the way it was first released than now. Since that's not an option, UO falls a close second, and I have to throw in WoW BECAUSE I enjoyed playing it with my son and partner. Had it not been a family thing...it's not something I'd have likely stuck with long on my own, but I did greatly enjoy it with my family.
I would probably be right alongside you two "thirding" it, if they would ever get their PayPal payment fixed so that people can pay for their subscriptions. They've been saying they're in the process of fixing it for oh...about a year now.
To clarify: I've never played Neocron or Neocron II, but I have wanted to for years. They, however, do not offer normal payment options, for instance, they don't take debit cards or credit cards, OR....even PayPal at the moment. So my response here was more out of wishful thinking, as I THINK I would have loved the game had I ever been "allowed" the opportunity to play it.
Having played most of these games in their "time" (Not FF) i can easily say DAOC it was far ahead of most mmos and sadly remains king of pvp.

EQ for the same reasons many have already stated here.
But imagine that...WoW trumps all. Guess it shouldn't surprise me considering today's player is all about reward with little effort.
Guess I'll start designing a MMORPG that starts you at lvl 80 with tier 3 epic gear, an epic mount, 10,000 gold, more instances than zones, and the ability to destroy mobs quickly and then sit back and watch the cash roll in. So sad what the mentality of the gaming community has become. What happened to excitement through meaningful accomplishment? Flame away.

How about if I just agree with you instead? Flaming is getting so old 'round here.
Note: I will say, however, that people would whine if you started them in T3 gear. Better up that to at least T8 if you're going to start new characters at level 80. hehe

DAoC hands down.
Neocron.
but from that list i would vote EvE.
Asheron's Call, no question.
It was a world, not a game.
The dev team was part of the community, and the community was fantastic.
The monthly updates, for free.
The seamless, zoneless world that seemed to go on forever.
Skill based sandbox.
Awesome epic quests like Aerfalle and Frore and the Atlan Stones/Weapons
Bael'Zharon and the Shadow Wars
Leafcull/Darktide FTW!
It was pure awesomesauce until the macroers, XP chains, and third party hacks ruined it.
Einherjar_LC says: WTB the true successor to UO or Asheron's Call pst!

DDO hands down. Closer to launch
Favorite in order:
SWG Pre CU/NGE
EQ
LotRO
AOC
AO
WAR
DAOC
Well, mine is LotRO but i put eve as it's my second fave.
1. SWG (Pre-CU)
2. Anarchy Online (Pre-SL)
3. Darkfall / Any Quality Sandbox
Asheron's Call and Anarchy Online
DAoC. Nice to see in a strong third. Wish the question was "Pre-WoW" favorite game. Still , nice results!
Ultima Online, my first MMO and favorite of all time. Few MMOs in my opinion have come even close to what UO was.
SWG a close second.

Qu: So can you imagine what it is in the real world out there ?
An: Yes, 11.5 M paying subs against 300K votes,
Con: So why even ask ... People only pay for what they like.
