To each his own. I found the combat lacking. It was just click as fast as your litlle fingers can and rotate like a tornado.

Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.
That's part of my problem with Darkfall. Darkfall's skill system is limited by being too unlimited. You can train everything. At first glance that doesn't seem like a problem. Darkfalls skill system doesn't branch out to have specialties and sub-specialties, so most people will have archery, melee, and magic and usually at the same time. When I played everyone was an archer-mage-knight. There was also no economy because except for young characters, the crafters had most of the crafting lines on one character. I'm not saying the game is bad. I'm just saying I thought the scope was really limited and that it didn't appeal to me.
Guessing you played Pre-Conquer The Sea.
In that case I understand what you mean. Though since Conquer The Sea Expansion, Melee and Archery specialization have been added and some of these specialization completly remove the ability for you to use Elemental Magic, Necromancy and Arcane Magic (You can still use Lesser, Greater, Witchcraft and Spellchanting though, but as you are likely to be wearing Heavier Armor which gives Magic Encumbrance, you'll only be using the Convert spells like Mana To Stamina). Some other specs, will reduce your mana pool by 5-10% and also stacks.
As for craftors, most clans have 1-5 dedicated crafters while others take care of the PvP. Crafting/Harvesting consumes a lot of time in a day.
There are still a few issues regarding the player economy, in my opinion, but it's slowly getting better.

I'm sorry to inform you that I do know what I'm talking about, as I sunk roughly two weeks worth of play time into Darkfall.
Thanks for your assessment of the situation though, however wrong it may have been.

Here is the problem with the WoW/EQ2 formula.
Sure you get skills every 2 levels but for the first 40 levels or so you get new levels so fast by the time you figure out how you want your hotbar setup for your new skills you no longer need them becuase you got some new ones.

I'm glad you are enjoying your time in Darkfall. I too love almost everything in the game. It is very different and refreshing from all other games available today. I think the feeling of danger in games like Darkfall/UO is really what makes a game for me. When I first played Darkfall, I realized in the first hour why none of the no-risk games have been able to capture my attention like that in recent years.
It's quite ironic that Darkfall, one of the most brutal games in the industry has one of the cleanest forums on the site. Anyone else notice that Darkfall generally gets good responses from players?
~Miles "Tails" Prower out! Catch me if you can!
DF players have a mature audiance 20+ y/o players.
Kids don't like losing their stuff when they die, they will rage quit in a week (and punctually they do)
DF is a beautiful game, and everyone who plays it, if he doesn't like it at least doesn't hate it.
DF is what a real MMORPG should be, with a living world where the community is the focus, not the game mechanics.
I hope the new generations will understand what the old school players means when they always talk about the old UO days.
You should hear how loud these kids scream about how slow the stat gains are in DF, then demand that the dev make it fast so they can be as strong as a vet whose played a year! They're simply not prepared to play a year to have a character like that too, they've been programmed by WOW and want everything within months!
They really fail to grasp that DF is a MMO played long term! Yet they still scream and shout about the stats being slow and it's so unfair not to be uber like a vet in 30 days before rage quitting. Some who cut their teeth on WOW come over and get it and mature as a MMO player. Even though you can learn all skills in DF, there are only so many! So there is a ceiling for new players to aim for in the first year! Unlike EVE who's vets have been adding new skills for five years years, and a new player will take about 3 years with the newbie booster the dev added to become viable against them.

At this point, I will step in and respectfully say that after two weeks, you've barely brushed the surface of the game, much less the combat.
After almost a year, I'm still learning the nuances of combat and the potential combinations of abilities, and the alternate uses for some of them.
The further you get, the more complex it becomes, man.
Truth.
I am in the same boat. Not to mention non-creative types tend to be at a loss on how to play the game. I have seen so many people who sit around and gather and think that is developing their character. You see posts all the time from people who think goblins are the only thing new players can fight. Then there is the sad fact that many guilds do not encourage their players to spar and fight each other, this is THE most important factor in learning the game mechanics.

Having said all that I don think if a player doesnt like the game after playing for two weeks they most likely never really will get the full intent of the game.
For me it was an instant positive reaction from day 1.
Then again, I have enough experience to accept that for an MMO worth playing I am not going to fully understand all the controls in one evening.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
Everyone is different I suppose, but it took longer than two weeks for me to start really enjoying the game.
Joining a decent clan is a huge help. For example: I would guesstimate that 90% of Darkfall's regulars don't bother reading Race chat. However, Race is the main chat channel a new Player sees and while not surprising that they do, a new Player would be wrong/misguided to judge the Darkfall community by what they see in Race.
But thats Darkfall.
Darkfall shows you her worst from day 1. No beer to blur the edges. No makeup, pushup bras or tummy tucking knickers.
Darkfall (in my opinion mind you) needs some scratching at and some patience to both appreciate and to get to know.
If you judge Darkfall superficially or quickly then you are doing yourself a disservice.
In two weeks, a person, if he's not being close minded from Day 1, can probably fairly determine whether Darkfall is the game for him.
Darkfall isn't for everyone (naturally). Playing for two weeks however, doesn't even come close to making you an expert.. not that people have ever really needed any credentials to speak out of their ass.. but playing for two weeks doesn't give them to you (credentials).
We need to start thinking of MMO's as we do music or literature or the movies. There is not one MMO or one game that will be universally satisfactory to everyone's taste. MMO's don't come in one genre just as books or music doesn't come in one genre. Change and innovation is a good thing in the MMO industry just as it is in literature and music, but every MMO doesn't need to push the envelope or be cutting edge to be "good" or fun. It just needs to be good. The same is true for music. The same is true for books or for movies. Music evolves. MMO's evolve. Storytelling evolves. And in doing so, it doesn't make obsolete or not enjoyable everything that's been done before.
But thats Darkfall. Darkfall shows you her worst from day 1. No beer to blur the edges. No makeup, pushup bras or tummy tucking knickers.
Lol I like this definition.
But this is true, people cannot judge DF in few weeks, the game start to be enjoyable after 1 month when you see the progress your character made (yes it takes time).
Most people do not understand that DF is a real MMORPG.....................remember the things you meant to play for years?
Today kids are used to max in 2 months, they cannot appreciate the slow progress of their character.
To be honest the slow progress is what I like about DF, and no, I am not a Vet so I still have way to go.
You should hear how loud these kids scream about how slow the stat gains are in DF, then demand that the dev make it fast so they can be as strong as a vet whose played a year! Haha my young padewan, you are wrong. There hasn`t been alot of mainstream full-loot mmo like Darkfall. I can only think of three games namely Ultima Online, Shadowbane and Acheron call Darktide server. It amazes me that you believe you have knowledge of something you have never tried.
I`m 30+ years and played my first full-loot mmo UO early 1998. That`s 12 years ago, and I`ve played mmo`s ever since. Now think back and think what mmo you played 12 years ago. I knew the flaws of Darkfall from a pvp view after a few weeks, and I wasn`t wrong. Darkfall failed because of the grind and nothing else. Darkfall has enough content to keep the pvp community happy with sieges, ships, politics and pvp. Sadly Aventurine chose to focus on the tiny, almost non excisting hardcore PVE community. That group mainly consist of pre cu SWG players.
The PVP community likes to fight against players in a competative environment. A pvp player enjoy to test his skills against an equally skilled player, and not to pray on newbies. Only a child, a pve player or a generally bad person would find enjoyment in killing low level players and feel proud about it.
The huge grind take away the opportunity for a new pvp player to make his mark amongs the best, and that`s why we only have 8k players in a game made to hold 60k. I know I will never be able to play with my RL friends in Darkfall, and that`s a shame. To exclude a huge group of casual pvp players just because a minority likes to kill 10000 npc, will eventually kill Darkfall. And make no mistake, it will die if DF2010 doesn`t fix that part.
The problem with a system that is so hard to max out unless you play months is it alienates new players. Eve recently increased what new players can end up with after their tutorial and their player base has grown. And their system is a lot better since no matter how many skillpoints you have, you are still constrained to what ship you are flying (ie a frig won't kill a battleship unless the pilot is braindead).
On the same merit though a new player could fly a frigate and fill a role as a small support ship quite well with only a week of skills. Skills that are trained offline I might add. So if someone finds the beginning dull with low skills they can always just wait a few weeks as things train and do something else out of game.
Darkfall removes the two things that keep Eve balanced and wonders why people whine. No offline skill advancement, all grind and there is no constraint on ability use so older players are gods compared to new players and always will be. Someone should not be expected to play a game for months to be effective at the games main hitch, pvp.

DarkFall is not EVE. It's a different game with different concept in mind.
Sure lots of people complain about the "grind", but what mmo doesn't have grind? i simply dont care about my stats and only focus on enjoying the simple yet exciting combat, the huge world, the smart npc, the higher level gankers, the afk gathering (man i love taking brakes and still being able to farm something), the crafting, the land and the people in it. The most refreshing part of this game i'd have to say it's the combat. Not perfect by any means but quite smooth and more challenging then most other mmos. Even as a lowbe with little health and few skills there is really no "1 shotted". Sure you'll loose but you can get a few hitts in no matter how high your opponent is. NO CC....man do i love this set up. Go in shooting/swinging and die fighting. None of this "can't do that wile dieing" crap. No matter how weak i am i'll die swinging covered in my my own and my enemy's blood. HELL YEA! Mounted fighting that actually works Full loot, definately makes every decision you make important. Not even a trip to the work bench is trival OR safe. Even returning to your bank with 50 iron feels like and achievment. You did not get me this time. I survived. I won this battle. The war will only rage on. I started this game very skeptical and did not like it right away but the more i play the more i get attached to it. I'v only just begun but more and more do i want to live, fight, and die in DF. We truly need more games like this one.
This was my experience exactly. Don't worry about your stats .. play the game. It is fantastic. Most games are better if you enjoy the ride. . but they force the ride. . so how can you not think about the end . I don't even think of the combat or PVE as a grind. it is fun. I try different things . .am always looking over my back etc. Actually losing your equipped gear is less annoying than running back to where you were with all of your gear to finish some quest. . when I rez. . naked I grab some more gear and head out a different way. . love it!
DarkFall is not EVE. It's a different game with different concept in mind.
Really, because I thought darkfall was a space based mmo where we fly around in ships, how could I have missed that.
Oh thats right, I didn't, I am pointing out how darkfalls "concept" is sucking, and your stating nothing.
Because you're stating an opinion based on what....2 weeks of game time?
Skill grinding is very fast compared to what it was in the past. And those complaining about skill-grinds simply want to everything handed to them on a silver plate. DarkFall is all about character progression.
And if DarkFall really alienated the new players, I'm pretty sure the increases of trial players buying the client wouldn't be so high, and I'm also pretty sure A LOT more threads with negative feelings towards DarkFall would be found. Just ask around, visit new players city and all. The community has heavily increased over the past 2 weeks, chats are very active, etc.
YOU didn't like DarkFall, and prefered EVE. You think the systems in EVE's are better. That's YOUR opinion. Again, DarkFall is not EVE, It's a different game with a different concept in mind.
And if DarkFall really alienated the new players, I'm pretty sure the increases of trial players buying the client wouldn't be so high,,,
Could you provide me a link to your source?
There is no source. But we, those who've been playing DarkFall for a long time, can tell by a quick glance around Starter City. Talking to new players simply goes to further prove this point. There is a very great growth and only those who barely played can deny it, out of ignorance I may add.
I decided on trying out Darkfall after looking for something new to play here on mmorpg.com. Yeah, I am lost and maybe my prospects aren't too great. I don't play fps because I'm not that good at it.
I'm enjoying the game. It is a little hard to find npcs in the town.
I am kind of worried about the control schemes and what I would need to do to be competitive in a pvp match skill wise when I have the stats in a quarter to a half of a year or whatever it takes. I just have a regular keyboard and I'm thinking that most will have a good keyboard with some legal combat macros programmed in.
I know loot macros are supposed to be a no-no. And I see why the first person and target system is there so that it makes it more fun with a chance to surprise the miner or the looter. Still, I am used to third person and not so much first person view. I was also used to towns I could navigate easily (I picked the goblin looking creature with the capital city of Shoal).
I like the pve. It is fun. I think the reason why it is fun right now is I am not being killed over and over. Once the noob protection goes I wonder how much fun it will be to be farmed over and over by someone I can't beat. I guess I'll join a guild. It doesn't seem too highly populated where I am and maybe that is a good thing. I wonder how many times I am going to get killed at the bank.
If it gets too annoying I'll leave or log out for awhile but for now the game is enough fun that I don't want to try Age of Conan. I'll buy darkfall online when the trial is up. It is aggravating and interesting at the same time. I played LOTRO for awhile and that was a lot easier but somehow not quite as satisfying.

For the macros, you can easily use 3rd party programs like AutoIT (I think that's the name), you'll be able to bind more keys this way and do the equivalent of a "good" keyboard like a G15.
Looting takes a little while to get used to but after a day or 2, it's become part of you and it only takes a few second to dry a grave.
I'm actually impressed that you did not talk about the community, considering that you chose Alfars, which are reknown on the server for being the worst part of the community. If it ever gets too crowded and you can't handle the massive PK, which is understandable when you are simply unable to progress, (Alfar lands are usually PvP hot spots along with Human lands) I suggest you apply to NEW. NEW is a clan made for new players to learn the ropes for 30 days. You'll be able to toughen up a bit and know enough about DarkFall to venture and look for a clan that fits you. And if you go to Hammerdale (NEW's city), it's a bit safer even though there's still the occasional PvP going on. But since there's always 20-30 members in the city online, you do have a chance to succesfully defend yourself (with numbers in this case).
Oh and before I forget, since you have trouble finding NPCs on the minimap, you can write annotations on your map ( /annotion_add (1 word name), it helps finding monster spawns/nodes or anything else you need. And finally, DF Atlas or Sinister Map are interactive maps that you can use to find monsters and other type of valuable informations. Hope it helps.
Bah, they still have many things to fix, but yes, it is a pretty good game. I figure I'll resub when DFO 2010 hits.
Yeah I have to agree about that. There's a lot to fix such as the Alignement system, Clan system, Siege mechanics, Village mechanics and so on.
One thing that I noticed though is that the "Twitter Updates" and the Community Spotlight forum haven't really been updating anything regarding the game every since the "Community Expansion Wishlist" was posted. It's just a hunch, so take it with a grain of salt, but I think AV might be evaluating the Wishlist and the expansion will possibly bring many of those ideas in DF2010.
Really hope that's the case because that Wishlist is serious business.
But again, just a hunch, so take it with a grain of salt there.
I agree with a lot of what the OP said, the game does have some attraction, but imo it needs a lot more to attract a larger demographic. It is like a game with a few nice ideas, but lacks so many others.Since the game has risk at ALL times, i do not feel they needed to attach certain needed crafting items to force PVP on certain areas,ALL crafting materials should be available ,no matter how you choose to play.
The water exploits, should have long been looked at as well, tons more things should be added or fixed,it is like a game still in production mode.It was hard for myself to look beyond the good parts of the game, with so many areas unfinished or done wrong.
I normally hate PVP,but if AV put in 6 months of serious effort into this game,i would play it,it seems like they dicker around like it is a hobby.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Please do not respond to me
Everyone is different I suppose, but it took longer than two weeks for me to start really enjoying the game.
But I am liking the journey.................
Once you get 50 Air and 50 Fire Nukes the game gets that much sweeter. Of course that is until u run into a group of 12 Destroyers.
I quit recently, but not due to the game lacking. the game was one of the best ive played for years.
Actually losing your equipped gear is less annoying than running back to where you were with all of your gear to finish some quest. . when I rez. . naked I grab some more gear and head out a different way. . love it!
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!

Could you provide me a link to your source?
