Actually sounds pretty craptastic - why do companies think these types of games work for more than 50k-100k subs, is that the goal - to limit the player base?

Actually it does seem like they really want to start out small. With about 500 for people who preordered and maybe holding sales back to let people get settled. And, plan to only have about 5k by the end of summer.

Well, good luck to them, I just think 1 Darkfall type game is enough for the market. We don't need another clone of it with even more convoluted PvP rules that make your head hurt every time you consider attacking someone.

Comparing Darkfall to Xsyon is like comparing, WOW to Darkfall. They are not even close to each other.
DFO is a world based on PVP, sieges, clan wars.
Xsyon is a world based on building and crafting.
DFO has crafting in it, and world building.
Xsyon has sieges and clan wars.
Key is look at where the focus is and how clear they differ.
DFO focus on having people PVP. Crafting is crappy, world building is very limited.
Xsyon focus on world building, crafting, terraforming, building up cities and roads. PVP is going to be more limited in the fact that killing someone else is going to be less common (Knock out system?) punishments for killing people are going to be way more harsh.
Try playing a game like Wurm Online, and then say its like Darkfall. You will notice its nothing like Darkfall. Mortal online is very close to Darkfall. Xsyon isnt and wont. So if you think this is Darkfall 2.0. You are in for a let down.

Yeah, 'cause we REALLY need more PVE only carebear quest grinders, right?? I mean, there's only like 100000 to choose from already.
Personally, I like the sound of the PVP system in this game. Looking forward to seeing how it develops.
I'll be interested to see how the game pans out. The FFA style could be appealing, if the circumstances for punishment were high enough and discouraged it in a way that PKing was a niche crowd instead of a majority.. which is rarely the case in games such as these.
My only true concern is Permadeath... as thats the last thing I'd want to see implemented. Sure some people love it... but it seems to be more of a deterrent than most other mechanics I've seen.

actually you are wrong.. its a sandbox game with city building and lots of crafting.. like PRE CU SWG. so no i wouldnt say there is 100000 to choose from... there arent actually many sandbox mmos out right now.
Personally I like the system. I'm a crafter, explorer, who likes a little pvp. The system seems just right to me.
Why does everyone consider it FFA PvP, because that is an option? Do you really think the game is going to be filled with all evil tribes? That is the only way a full FFA PvP is going to work. I iknow many good and neutral tribes in the game. I belong to one of them. If I go out and start killing other good tribe members I'll get booted from my tribe. It's automatic. My alignment turns evil. I lose my tribe, any faction I had with them and any allies faction I had formed. Unless you want everyone to be your enemy, then you need to think before you act.
In the game you start with a limited number of skills. If you want to learn new skills you either have to be lucky enough to scavenge an extremely rare book or have someone teach it too you. If you're good you have way more options to further increase your skills available. You can walk into other good towns without being attacked on site. You can gain reputation with them. Quests are given out at the tribe totems. Evil is more restricted there. Every tribe but your own is going to hate you.
Now to the person that didn't see a point in partial looting. Understand that you start with a limited number of skills. You won't have all the tools you need for crafting everything you can make. If I was evil and started with hunting and bone working skills. I could gather bones from corpses and craft them into things. However, I probably don't have leatherworking skills. Maybe I see another hunter killing bears and skinning them. He has a pack of hides easily visible on his back. So I decide to go knock him unconcious and steal all his hides.
If I'm good and hunting in my tribe area the chance of getting attacked is probably low, but it's still there.
