Does anyone know how much they take in compared to how much they give out? What the "rake" or "vig" is.
For example online poker takes 5% for ring games 10% for tournies, live poker is probably 3 times that amount. Slots are anywhere from 2-20%. So I'm guessing they have to be at least 50%?
As Magyar said, there's been LOTS of study on this. However, to answer properly, I'll have to give a quick lesson in Entropia Economics.
Entropia's economy is divided into two sections
TT value
Markup
TT value is the amount for an item that MA is responsible for and will pay you back, should they ever be forced to remove that item from gamepay for any reason. It is also the amount that decays with use, upon which, MA makes their money. For example a longsword bought from the Trade Terminal is 15 peds TT. Each time you use it to damage a mob, it decays slightly. Against a small mob, you may only use it 5 times, so the TT value after killing that mob is now 14.69. Over the long run (not on every mob, but on avg.) the TT value of the loot you get seems to be about 90-95% of TT spent, so about 0.28 ped back on avg per noob mob. So you are losing 0.03 per beginner mob on avg. This is how MA earns their money.
However, that loot you got is wanted by others. Perhaps you looted somes hides, components, etc. And crafters are willing to pay you something above the TT value. For example, if you looted 10 ped TT of a certain component, maybe you can sell them for 130% of TT value or 13 ped. The extra 3 ped may be enough to cover your loss, or it may not.
This is the markup portion of the economy. It's not fixed, and depends highly on "market forces" meaning what the other players are doing. Sellers try to get the most they can for each item, and buyers try to find the lowest prices they can get. Each transaction is not fixed. I've seen the exact same item sell for 600% one day and then 105% a year later. Why? Because less people are interested in using it, plus more is being looted (supply/demand) I've also seen it go the other way around.
Markup works with all looted items. Blueprints, guns, armor, hides, scrap metal, etc. etc. If you get something during your activities, you can sell it, or you may wish to keep it if the ite is worth more to you by using it. Your choice. Keep in mind, markup is almost completely player powered. MA does not decide what we'll pay in MU. If you think 140% is a fair price for leather for your tailoring business, that's your choice to pay it. If you think a certain gun is worth 13,000 ped (yes, $1,300) above ther TT value, it's your choice to pay it. My current gun, I payed +300 ped for it. It was worth that price to me. I would not have paid +1,000 because it's not worth that much to me, even if the seller believes it is.
So back to your question: The "rake" is about 5-10%, but what you do with that 90-95% loot can make or break you.
Caveat on that 95% TT return. If you do stupid things and spend way more than the expected avg. cost for an activity. (I.E. using a very poor weapon against a mob plus wearing overpowered armor for the situation and getting hit a lot PLUS having a healer heal you every time you get 1 point of damage) then the system isn't going to return 95% of all that waste. There is a tipping point where "poor" activity simply isn't rewarded.
---edit---
Caveat 2: You won't get 95% bvack on every run. Some runs may be 50% TT return, 85% or 120%. However, at some point, you may be running, saying 80% overall TT return, and you'll suddenly hit a big loot, which may push your overall return to 92%.
---/edit---
It is my belief that those that truly feel ripped by the system are/were either going outside their skill/equipment boundaries, and suffering TT losses due to poor personal choices, or they are mismanaging the markup portion of their loot. Or worse, they did both.
Everyone needs to stay on the topic of the thread, this is the last warning. The intermittent trolling/flaming needs to stop. Play nice .

The discussion here is by its nature heated, as the Entropia Platform has produced strong feelings about it on both sides due to the potential for pleasing gains and cruel losses the game posesses. While an increase in moderation may be in order on this particular thread, issuing vague threats like "this is the last warning" are not going to be productive. If the intent is to close the thread, it will be closed. However in doing so MMORPG.com loses the opportunity to gain a very deep perspective into the workings of Entropia Universe as it stands today.
Bear in mind that many of the faces on this thread have been or are currently high profile individuals within the Entropia Universe, and all are attempting to share their legitimate feelings, assessment, and experience regarding this particular platform. Emotions flying around are simply part of that. Given the controversial nature of this platform, the staff here may benefit greatly from some flexibility.
Speak for yourself about offering zero value for the thousands of dollars
I was... and simultaneously I was speaking on behalf of the large portion of the EF community, who also feel ripped off. If you disagree that a large portion of current EU participants are disgruntled, then unfortunately, you're in denial.
Well like a good majority of forums players will air their grievances that does not mean a large portion of the EU participants are disgruntled heck a large part of the EU participants never step foot in a forum nor post anything until they have a complaint. I've personally had my ups and downs with PE/EU over the years and at times I've posted frustrations and other times I've applauded the efforts I've seen.
I see EU for what it is and what it can be. I don't polarize it as just a "scam" nor is it the best place to be in the virtual worlds out there. In essence it is what each player makes of it. Rocktropia will be what the players make of it and what the developers implement over time.
I think its great people vent their feelings on EF and other forums. Constructive criticism can be a helpful tool for Mindark and the Planet Partners to gauge what is working and what is not. My experience in forums is that they are fairly weighted towards the negative rather than the positive so I don't look that them for the general pulse of a product since most of the time those quite content with it will not post especially when confronted with a wall of inflamatory, derrogative, and sometime flat out lying posts.
If I truely did just camp Entropia Universe Forums all day and never step foot in the game to see people enjoying their time I woud think its a pretty bleak place as well.
Entropia Universe has been around a while and had and will have its share of growing pains. While I am not overtly thrilled with Rocktropia, it is a step in the right direction IMHO. Other planets will have their own unique feel but ultimately they need some time get on their feet. Personally I have been following the Development of Planet Cyrene I think it will add some interesting aspects to the EU.
If I felt ripped off by Mindark or any of the Planet Partners I would simpley stop playing and withdraw what money have in the game. Personally I have felt more ripped off buying some shitty sand box games.
Ahhh well play or don't play I don't care in either situation, just like you probably don't care if I play or don't play your favorite game.
I am kinda sick of seeing bashes coming from this community every time news come about EU...
I watch this forum and read it all the time but when I see stuff that is wrong... I have to reply
This game is a real cash economy game. Money won't come from nowhere here. Since MA has to pay for ISP/servers/engine license and advertising, they take the money from the inworld. So, since there is less money in the world that it was originally put, someone has to lose this money. The thing is that everyone risks losing their money. But that is done in completely different ways. You can lose money because you don't inform yourself. You think that if you played a lot of games, you know how to play them all. Hence we have people that deposit 100$ from day1, they don't even take their teleporters or explore and ask questions or visit forums. They buy inefficient equipment and in the process of mining/hunting/crafting they lose a lot by not being economical and efficient. A lot of those kinda people I see here trolling the game. There are also the ones that loose even if they are economical and know what they are doing. But they lose much less than the first category so they afford to play more and by playing more, you have higher chances of winning a big loot.
2 examples to cover different situations:
1) Non depo player, like me. I have been playing since 2006 or so, and I've only deposited 10$ to activate the credit card (that was like 1 year ago, those money had no impact on my gameplay). Anyway I spent a lot of time in the game, not seeking to make a fortune though (I was underage when I started playing EU, and coming from a fairly wealthy family, it was not my intention to get rich from EU). I have played safe, never gambled on big mobs or purchasing expensive equipment. I was a trader for a time too. Studying the market, seeking out opportunities but also losing money as some items/resources depreciated in value. I had fun playing the game, and I still have. I became a fairly good medium player and I am currently the leader of a Romanian society in which I teach others how to play this game, while also having fun.
2) A society mate of mine, he started off by depositing. He spent money on useless armor and guns, and he lost a lot. In time, I thought him how he should spend his money. He started playing more economical. But he continued to loose (less than before though), so he depoed more. He now is a fairly good miner and had some lucky periods. His avatar and assets now worth more than he deposited by now. Of course he was not enjoying loosing his money at the beginning but now he better understands the game mechanics and he's having fun.
That's all I have to say about this matter, gl to all !
I am kinda sick of seeing bashes coming from this community every time news come about EU...
Yeah doesnt it suck when users from one community bash another one?
When you disguise a gambling casino via a game, it is natural to bash it. When posters try to discuss it as a game it rather irks many of us. So it is obvious you can expect continued criticism.
This thread says a lot about at least parts of the Entropia community, enough to make me never ever go take a look at it.
They remind me of the Darkfall community, especially in the early days *shiver*.
Hah, that's a scary thought...Darkfall-Entropia combined, Tasos Neverdie
ps: no harm intended to neither Entropia nor Darkfall. I think this is merely morning ramblings from a person still lacking coffee. Hope some had a chuckle

Ok Ok, enough guys :-)
As an avid MMORPG.com reader/poster/follower and an Entropia Community member I have negative things I can say about both communites. Lets open up a bitch thread and discuss it... no nevermind that horse has been beaten to death.
In all seriousness, both MMORPG.com and Entropia Universe have their dark sides, but both also have their shiny parts. The good hopefully outweighs the bad.
All forum behavior aside, the Entropia folks are actually quite nice ingame, and many are glad to help you get a feel for the world. Theres generally a no handout policy, but some folks break it and assist new players with limited types of gear and guidance. The game world, in short, is far different than the angry, polarized forum ramblings of a few malcontents and fanbois.
Do we get to meet REAL rock artist (their ava ofc)
How do we KNOW its not just playback?
How do we KNOW we are talking with Lady Gaga, and not some 52 year old dude?
...what about a GagTopia
How do I know you are the real Kimmi?
lol Hey Mr. Pink
I would suppose they would have some sort of live stream like on CND. I heard ND pipe in there from time to time on current happenings on his rock.
I would think Lemmy would address his army whenever all that armor is looted.
I am curious just how interactive Rocktropia will eventually be. I guess only time will tell. It could be an interesting platform to introduce one's music............but lets hope they have some quality control on that. I spent a lot of time hitting music websites that let up and comers share music and finding a really great artist out of the mix was like a needle in a haystack. I can't bag on it to much though since I would have never stumbled upon Mieka Pauley a long time ago had I not been scouring the independant artists on download.com when they had music.
I think Hedwigtropia or Angry Inchtropia would be more interesting than Gagtropia lol jk
I paid 4$ to get there. Spent maybe 2$ on mind essence so I could teleport all over the plant to check out the new scenery and mobs. I lost maybe 30$ on hunting but got 3 cool new shotguns (that I probably wont use). I found some potentially really good mob spawns that can be very favorable for me to hunt, but I havent had the urge to look further into this yet.
Overall I like the scenery and the new mobs are slightly refreshing (especially if you like boobs). However some of them seem to be very similar to certain Calypso mobs, when you look at stats and behavior, only with a different 3d model.
I paid 4$ to go back to Calypso because I missed the hunting there, and most of my friends are there as well. After the travel back to Calypso I realized that I forgot clear out my ROCKtropia storage where I had, amongst other things, about 100$ worth of explosive ammo. So one day I have to go back and that will probably give me an excuse to test out the previous mentioned mob spawns.
All in all it cost me around 40$ for a few hours of entertainment and I got some experience that might be valuable to me later.
Sometimes I spend 40$ in Entropia, other times I might buy a brand new game, go to a club and buy 2 beers or simply just get a pizza delivered (yes a pizza will rarely cost less than 40$ in my country). I play when I feel like it and I dont play when I dont feel like it. I dont put more money in than I can afford or want to. I also have my ups and downs like everyone else. Most times I lose money but sometimes I win it all back + then some.
I have been playing Entropia since 2005 and I dont really have any expectations. I play it because I can enjoy it.
Im not sure if my avatar is worth more than what I put in or not, but its not that important to me as I treat my deposits as spent money and I dont plan on selling out unless there is an emergency.
Entropia has given me alot of good times but also bad times, but thats life I guess One thing I really like about it is the lack of monthley fees so I dont feel pressured to play more than I want to. I can play exactly when I want to.
I can (and I have on several occations) play everyday for months without deposits and actually earn money, but most of the time its more fun to stay away from the grinding and lose some money on bigger challenges.
Honestly, I'm so sick of hearing about Jon "NEVERDIE" Jacobs....
He was employed by Mind Ark when he bought Club NEVERDIE. He even registered the domain, www.clubneverdie.com 10 days before the "purchase" was finalized....
Rocktropia is just another Mind Ark ploy to use there PR machine "NEVERDIE" to attract more players...
One thing I really like about it is the lack of monthley fees so I dont feel pressured to play more than I want to. I can play exactly when I want to.
That's also something I like a lot.
If I want to drop to WoW just to say hello to some friends, I need to pay fee for one month. I get bored to WoW in about a week, so although I might play it occasionally, because of that payment system I will not anymore.
Even if I just wanted to post in official forums i need to pay!! Now THAT is legalized scam!
I just ignore NEVERDIE and his affiliation with MindArk. Theyre doing their own thing. Im doing my own thing. Im fully aware that Entropia is a Ponzi scheme, complete with testimonials. There's no point in dwelling on it.

Why? Your choice. Keep in mind, markup is almost completely player powered. MA does not decide what we'll pay in MU. If you think 140% is a fair price for leather for your tailoring business, that's your choice to pay it. If you think a certain gun is worth 13,000 ped (yes, $1,300) above ther TT value, it's your choice to pay it. My current gun, I payed +300 ped for it. It was worth that price to me. Caveat on that 95% TT return. If you do stupid things and spend way more than the expected avg. cost for an activity.
