Star Wars: The Old Republic: Combat Developer Diary Video

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

A new combat developer diary for Star Wars: The Old Republic is available exclusively over at GameTrailers.com. The video clocks in at about six minutes in length, and is chock full of all the sorts of combat footage we've all been itching to see.

The developers even get into the Ranged vs. Melee debate, using and some PvP footage between a Bounty Hunter and Jedi to demonstrate how a ranged class would deal with a melee class trying to get in his face. The Bounty Hunter is able to essentially taser the Jedi in order to allow him time to re-establish distance and fire at the Jedi.

Outside of the super flashy Jedi and Sith acrobatics and lightning moves featured in the video, the Bounty Hunter really steals the show, as he appears to have access to a grappling hook that yanks players towards him, and even has the ability to propel himself towards the player using his jetpack and basically Shoryuken them when he gets there. That last bit is worth watching the video for alone, by hte way.

Check out the video here.

If we are in fact a year or so away from release this game truly does look amazing so far.  Of course, there are as many questions raised as answered by this dev. diary but, things are looking damn good.  Cannot wait to sink my teeth into this thing and see what BioWare has up their collective sleeves for me this time.

The bounty hunter class impressed me the most...cant wait!

Was it just me or did I see a bit of PvP in that Video?

I hope that they have large scale PvP, after all, Star Wars inside an arena don't sound very Star Wars like.

Taking multiple hits to kill someone with a blaster or light sabre doesn't sound very Star Wars, either.

Typical MMO devs - talking about capturing the action of the movies, when the combat is nothing like them.

Lol, if there is one thing that could totally destroy the sheer awesomeness and power of a light saber it would be MMO combat...

Hell yes, the combat looks more polished (slow and steady wins the race) than previous videos. I'm even more stoked to play a Trooper after seeing those "Itching Powder" grenades (3:16 in the video).

Heck yes. Hands down--the trooper was one of the best. I can't wait to play this game.

not sure what to think, combat looks too stagnant ... everyone is just standing around waiting for their turn to shoot/slash/lightning.

I was really hoping to see more movement in combat, obviously not twitch based but more movement while fighting.

funniest part to me was the guy all excited about the "gadgets Bounty hunters get to stop melee players from advancing on them" ... first thing i thought was ... um like a root and knockback? like this is some new spectacular solution?

Very nice video.  Can't wait to see more and more of the game.

Pretty much what i expected. Thats not a bad thing, but i just wasnt totally blown away. Animations look great and classes look fun. I dont agree with their whole "Lots of good guys beating on a bad guy isnt heroic" line of thinking, because it works against them. How is 1 "Hero" shooting up a whole group of weaklings any more heroic?

One thing i absolutely hated was the looks of the lightsabers. They look VERY cheap, almost though as they were fighting with toy lightsabers within the game.

It looked like a blast! I can see me with a blank stare looking at the class selection screen when this game is live. So torn as to what my favorite class is.

Charging jet pack upper cut? That was awesome. So many new abilities and animations revealed in this video.

    . . .

Why do I feel underwelmed by what I just seen. Its not that it looks bad, heck it looks better than any other video Ive seen so far, but something is just missing for me.

I love the Star Wars universe, like the games, etc. But there was something about what I was watching that seemed un-Star Wars like. Maybe it was the canned-looking animations, or the "stage", but it all seems bleh. Maybe it was the characters themselves that were un-Star Wars like.

Its frustrating. Its like looking at something that seems normal, but where you cant put your finger on the unseeming part.

Hell it may have even been the lack of audio and the sounds of blaster fire and the crackle of  a lightsaber battle...

You sound like one of the people that need to give it a go. No video, promises, epic fight scenes will do it for you until you actually get a chance to sit down and play it. Or maybe the game just isn't for you :)

Oh I absolutely plan on trying it. Like I said Im a SW fan, always have been, always will be.

Just something underwelming about that video. Nothing that I seen where I could say to myself "F*** yeah!"

    More like "Hmmmm, okay."

Well not totally true, I really am looking forward to the choreographed light saber duels.

Very impressed and loved the bounty hunter gameplay. Makes me want to roll a bounty hunter instead of a sith warrior as my first choice..

Are the troopers the ones with the Gatling blasters? If so then that's what I'm playing first.
