This has bothered me for quite some time as well, but eventually i realised this.
If this bothers you, you have to either :
1: Get laid.
2: Question your sexuality.
3: Quit MMO gaming.
I didn't buy tomb raider because it looked like crap, not because i had to play a female character.
Option 2 gives me headaches, option 1 sounds fine but what should I do after those 5 minutes with the rest of my time, when I do option 3, quit MMO gaming? Have you thought about that?

At first I thought about writing a lengthy post about the creepy guys who complain about the way others play games, but then I thought it's not really worth it, as all has been said before numerours times.
So in short:
Religious fanatics who want to impose their outdated morales upon others: go home and do that silly stuff someplace else.
Horny dudes who have to fapfapfap about any female pixel they see imagining the sexy blonde behind the char piloting it: get your hormones under control, get a rubber doll or a real girl or whatever, but don't molest people in video games!
Desperate lonely dudes who think every female pixel could be their new girlfriend: it's a game and no dating service! Go to a dating website or go out, but don't complain about others only because your point of view on the game is twisted and distorted by your crippled social abilities!

Some people are allergic to rubber. Quality dolls cost serious money.

WoW, this is a hot topic, 85 posts already, who'd have thought?
I'm betting this thread will be picked up and discussed in the weekly news forum item, since MMO + girlz + roleplay + controversy, how can that combo go wrong? ( => most fitting smiley )

I'm male and I used to play only male characters too but gave that up several years ago. It doesn't really bother me at all what gender the other person really is I care more that they know how to play their class.
I've come to realize that no matter what sex my toon is I'm still playing with an electronic doll so that makes me a girly man anyway, no matter if my e-doll is a boy or girl.

Ahem - they are 'action figures'.

I did not read this whole thread but I play female avatars from time to time. I never role play them tho i make 0 effort to act like a female avatar would. It just comes down to if I'm going to be looking at a computer generated avatar's ass it might as well be a female ass. It is true that some of the female avatars emotes are funny. So out of say 6 or 7 alts I will gereraly have 1 or 2 female toons.
IMHO, its not creepy, not inappropriate nor even remotely strange for a male player to create a female toon in a game. I often create several characters, if its possible, on a game account. Some will be male and some female characters. I can tell you from my experience the female toons are treated differently than the males. That alone makes it a worthy option.
Think of it in the most basic level. Two males cross paths they will subconsciously size each other up for several reasons. Territory, dominance, food, mating rights, power, wealth, etc.. we've all seen the 'animals in the wild' type television shows, the list goes on and on.
Now, an average male meets a female. They don't want to fight or conquer, they want a mate, a companion, to show off their prowess, to impress, etc... The brain switches to a different mode we (as males) are so ingrained with this type of unconscious action we do it automatically. Female toons are treated 'better' in game. They receive more offers for help, get more free stuff, and are initially received in a positive light. So a smart player may choose to start a female in this respect.
Most males encountering a female, even in a game, will fall prey to the 'damsel in distress' syndrome and try to 'rescue' just about any female they come across. Not to mention as stated in prior posts, in some games the female is smaller and would be less noticed standing next to a lumbering male Orc, possibly harder to hit or target, easier to hide, etc...
Besides, some dudes would just rather stare at a shapely woman for hours on end (their toon), rather than some other dudes musculature.
my $0.02
Peace!

Yeah, I know what you mean. Especially if they're "acting" as if they are elves, dwarves, orcs or hobbits, and then you find out they are NOT. Man, sex with them will never be the same.

I'm male and if the option is there to choose a female character normally I do. Somtimes not , for instance, LOTRO dwarves do not have a female model so I had to play a male dwarf. All depends on how they look really. I dont like real tall characters to begin with. The female models are usually shorter and thinner. Depends on the game. I also look at both models for customization: certain hair styles and features. I chose a Female Dwarf in Wow because I didnt see alot of them running around. Female Hobbit and Male Dwarf in LOTRO , both because they are smaller. I've been asked before why I chose a Female character and My reply is " Im a male and I dont want to run around looking at a dudes ass while I play". They usually shut up or laugh after that.
As many threads there are here and on all official fora about good looking gear, you really just need to admit that as an MMOer, you are a metrosexual. As someone else said, you are playing with dolls.
I will play male or female toons. Depends on the game. If its a game where there is RP, especially on vent/TS, I'll usually stick with male. I've got an extremely low voice (think Barry White) and it throws people too out of character otherwise.
But in CoH most of my toons are female. I just can't stomach dudes in tights, as LGBTQ friendly as I am.

1) True, but it was only an example, in reality I'm just going to roll her for the tight leather pants
2) Depends on whether they are gun-slinging ones wearing tight leather pants...
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
Simple MMO Rule to live by: "Women dont play MMO's!, It's all guys!" remember that and ya wont end up hiting on a guy! LOL
Its all about the fapping.
Hitting on female characters in game? never. Seriously there is something very creepy/weird about it.
Get that mini skirt on and party! Er not myself of course. Hey look, the good year blimp. Bye!
Oh, look! A distraction!
Can't go wrong with the basic black dress, but I see you know that already.
