I gave up a long time ago trying to RP in these games, so it doesn't matter to me the sex of the toon, as long as I like the look of it. RoM for instance, I find the male character faces to be either hideous, or effeminate, so I use the female toons. Its a fricking game, who the hell cares? And if you're homophobic enough that it bugs you, check your intolerance at the door.
?
What's your point in highlighting that? I don't play what I don't like the looks of. If you're going to construe that as my saying I'm homophobic, just be done with it. Its all about aesthetics, and I don't care to play men who are prettier then the women in their game, nor do I like play as an ugly woman. Except the trolls in EQ2, cause thats funny to me.
I was actually asking for a clarification, as you're basically pointing out something that to you looks like a "girly-man". While saying if you think I'm one, check your intolerance.
By your wording, to me that say's I'm afraid to be thought of as something, rather than you don't like the look of it. It would be much easier and less typing to say, In some games, I only like the way female models look. Just a tip is all, not saying you are intolerant or anything like that.
This isn't even a question about intolerance anyway. It's a question of integrity. In a perfect world for the OP everyone would play the sex that they are. It would take being a homophobe IMO to get worked up over such an issue being asked about. As noone asked do you do it, because you're gay?
Who would care about that? If they did they'd be banned anyway.
Excellent points, and mayhaps I got a little too defensive about it. I was citing RoM as an example of something I personally don't care for. As for the homophobia comment on my end, I suppose that just comes from a personal experience with a guild leader who took great offense at my using a female toon just because I liked the look of it better. Anyways, sorry to offend.
No worries, and thanks, I could see where such an experience would be relevant to such a question. I had no knowledge that was the reasoning behind it, so I apologize as well.

I tend to prefer to play male toons but lets face it in some MMOs they just look bad. Also saying playing the other sex in an MMORPG is odd kind of shows that you aren't a RP person given the whole point is that you are NOT playing yourself but a role you created.
It's really sad to know that so many people find their life as a Male so dull.
So you are saying that a game is real life? Am I getting that right?

Anyhoot, when riding back from AM/PM on my chopper, the thought came to mind, how many peeps you think have a female character and use MorphBox (pro/jr) where it makes guys sound like gals in-game??? (and gals like guys). LOL
I'm female and i primarily play male characters - there are several reasons.
Starting out, i played a female character. I got hit up for cybersex about every 15 minutes. People would rp out some pretty disgusting acts - and my guildmates remarks when i mentioned being irrtated at someone rping out ...shall we say, making a uniquely male mess on my character ... 'you must have lead him on, you probably deserved it' etc, etc.
You are treated differently once people know you're a 'real girl' online. the really annoying demands for proof of gender stop if you play a guy. I don't know why it matters, i never have.
So i quit playing female characters for a long time. it wasn't worth the hassle.
Some of my male friends play female characters because "If i have to stare at someone's ass all day, I'd like it to be an ass I would look at anyway.'
I think thats the best reason to play a character of a certain look of all - because you like to look at it. I mean - i play a druid who shapeshifts and I like to take a shape that doesnt' give me any real benefit - because it looks cool.
Maybe people could stop worrying about gender in a digital world if they weren't so hot to cyber.
It's really sad to know that so many people find their life as a Male so dull.

mmorpg is a way to escape the reality and live in a different world for some time. If being a troll, orc, elf, jedi, etc isn't enough and you want to change sex, want to look as a female, want to be looked at and treated as a female, i make an assumption, that you find being male boring or unsatisfying in your life.
Don't take it personally, it doesn't apply to everyone.

Well, I won't dismiss your experiences but I wonder if it was the group you were running with?
I have a few female characters here and there and have never ahd anyone come close to something like that.
1, had a guy say he wouldn't pk me because he didn't kill chicks
2, had a guy start up a conversation with me under the guise that he liked my name and wanted me to join his guild. Wasn't sure where that one was going so I was polite and nothing came of it.
3, had a guy come up to me and role play at me as if I was an actual woman. I kept my responses pretty neutral and he was on his way.
Other than that, my lotro guild (see sig below) has many women and NOTHING like this ever happens. I don't know if it's because we are older or just different people but I suspect that if women are getting this reaction from their guild mates and they don't like it then they are in the wrong guild.

I've never heard it put that way. Yes escape, some do, but not something regarding specific gender, race or needing animal paws (90% of my EQ time lol). Video gaming is about entertainment, it should never be a replacement for a seriously dissatisfied life, because games will only make it worse imo. Has nothing to do with gender choices or whatnot. But I come across a lot of people that try to make it all just like themselves (in more customizable games), and that is probably the other side of the issue with problems.

Apart from any thing I have experienced using female characters, I know that stuff happens as I have had friends over the years that were girls that junk happened to and I was even in the vicinity when people did crap to them at times. It happens. Of course not all communities are that way, in UO we had one of the largest guilds on the combined guild chart, and when we started a PvP sub-guild to participate in PvP-RP organizational events, we put a girl as leader. She was a great RP'er and lethal PvP player as well as organization skills which was a must. Cross her you get ganked :P then rez killed.
I love women too much, that is the reason why I generally use female avatars. It is much better than looking at the ass of a hairy monkey for long time periods. I don't RP, but truth to be told I got high respect for people who can adequetly RP a woman in table-top FRP games, that requires some good roleplaying skills or being gay I guess =P
I will never understand why some people don't like men using female avatars. Seriously get over it already.
I usually end up making female characters,I won't deny I love the way the female body can look.. It truely is a work of art, and is something I never get tired of looking at. Looking at guys all day on the otherhand gets borring since there is nothing I enjoy looking at on the male body. I have always rolled female characters in MMO's. For me, at least, it have never been a perverse obsession. Rather that the I find the female characters more aesthetically beauty full... This can, naturally, be because the game-designer have spent more time "perfecting" the female animations because the trend is for male players to roll female characters. I have no idea...
this was the first year of everquest when i got the worst of it. It is not nearly so bad now as it was then - maybe people matured. i haven't had anyone pester me for cybersex in 6 years. ... On the other hand, i only have one female character...
you know for about the first 20 levels there were no pants that had graphics? My half elf girl ran around with her butt exposed constantly. Thats the Dev's faults, not the poor hapless nerds who got an eyefull of buttcandy every time i ran by.
You know now that I think about it. The few people that I work with who play MMO's almost always talks about their toons in the 1st person. While I almost always refer to mine in the 3rd person.
Personal attatchment .... It's very easy to form it with an object you spend weeks & months interacting with.
I make a lot of female characters in games but I also make a lot of male ones aswell. I think maybe playing as a girl just isnt for you. It's a character in a video game I dont *roleplay anything*
They look hot and usually a girl toon will have interesting sexy armour. They also just look bad ass fighting mobs usually. I dont see why a persons sex has to be involved when playing a video game. I do agree with your point that a lot of the MMO's from Korea and Asia have freaky ideas that makes the game pretty wrong. In Lineage 2 the girl dworf in s84 vesper gear is pretty far past obscene and just sick.
This has probably been discussed before as the subject of men playing female characters in MMOs is definately nothing new but over the years this has begun to grate on me as a major part of my long term dissatisfaction with the genre. The increase in the use of VoiP connect has only made the situation seem all that much worse. How many fairies or 15'ish anime girls with grizzled truck driver voices does it take before one gets that creeped out epiphany?
Another trend I have been noticing is that the developers have been playing to this crowd a lot more by introducing gender locked classes most of which are female. I am a male and I like to play male characters but now I am being forced to join the many men online role playing girls crowd. I could play other games that don't do gender locks but that makes the pool of games smaller to choose from.
It just seems that the true definition of MMORPG is no longer Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game anymore but its' perversion. What is with that?
I don't see why you care what other people do, especially if they don't care what you do.
Would you not play Tomb Raider because you had to be a female character? Should women not play games where the only character is male?
It's pixels and nothing more, people can play whatever character they want when they want. You don't set the standards or get to enforce your personal ideals onto other people.
I truly think the only people who get bothered by this are the guys who are hoping to pick up chicks in video games so they get mad when each chick they meet turns out to be male. And in my opinion those guys hoping to pick up chicks in video games are the ones who get on my nerves, not the guys running around with pixels that happen to have a female form and don't have any other importance in the game or the world.
Plus you seem to think everyone is "role playing" hate to break it to you but the vast majority of people who play MMOs don't, and never plan on, roleplaying in any form. They're just playing a game and having fun, apparently you should try it.
Hmm not adding anything new to this thread really; all my points of view have already been mentioned. I used to play male characters only then after about 5 yrs got damn tired of looking at a man's ass. If I'm gonna be staring at a character's back for hours it might as well be a nice/sexy looking one. Some have tried to flirt with me, some have given me free stuff... Hell I gotta say sometimes I wonder what the hell's wrong with some males. There was one stupid mother.^@# who wouldnt believe I was a man and kept following me everywhere.
Once I joined a guild and when I went to a meeting all chars were female (about 15 or so) and only 2 were actually girls...
The only one who keeps asking/bothering me about why I play a girl is my 6 yrs old son.....darn kid makes me feel creepy sometimes
I don't mind guys playing as girls. It's the ones that do it trying to get money out of people that are annoying - that happened A LOT back in the DAoC days. I've run into quite a few dudes playing girls that openly admitted they do it because more guys give them more free stuff because of it.
I think that's changed though. I'm sure less people give stuff out like that nowadays, but I may be wrong.
Also, I've talked to people in-game for a long period of time that I actually thought was a girl irl, and they actually pretended to be a girl both in-game and irl, and then like a year later is like, "Hey, just letting ya know, I'm a guy." He even cybered with some other dude seriously at times. :P
Some guys take it seriously.
Or like in Secondlife lol *cough* Prostitutes *cough*
imo you can usually tell in many games who the girl avi's piloted by men are, they are usually the ones dressed half naked! ...I mean their avatars
Does not apply to RP'ers though. My first fembot was in old UO, I had multi accounts and she was part of the family And not a secret thing but in a large RP community. RP'ers will dress normal, since they ar RP'ing, and don't play emotional games with non-RP'ers as you ladie hounds think. Seems more strange to pick a female character if not RP'ing me thinks, but not really strange in a strange way
Something else I notice about guys that play girl characters....they usually, if they have the OPTION, make the boobs like MASSIVELY huge. No female ever does that. WE all know that boobs the size of watermelons are not only unattractive but HORRIBLY painful on the back. No woman would want to roleplay a woman with boobs like that. Every other sentence would have to be, "Oh, Sire...pray let me rest. I suffer such excruciating pain from the weight of my buxomness." LOL....that even sounds idiotic. And realistically...if you were RPing and HAD boobs that size...you'd HAVE to say that, because it wouldn't be very realistic to prance around like a feather now would it?
Okay...I exaggerate...a little. But yeah....no woman makes their characters LOOK like that.

Bah, silly gender stereotypes I usually put the boob sliders somewhere around the middle, artfully taking into account relative proportions to the rest of the body, while my girlfriend always just puts the boob slider all the way up, waist slider all the way down, etc.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

Oh you.
It's simple. Women are attractive. They're attractive in many different senses and for many different reasons.
The female body is beautiful, smooth, intoxicating. It epitomizes beauty.
Aside from a beautiful woman being just that, a beautiful woman. She's also a beacon of inspiration, jealousy, love, hate. This is unlike the Male body which conveys protection, strength, honor, endurance, wisdom, war. They're both many things to many people and appeal to everyone in many different ways.
Reality is perspective, dood. You may see things one way while no one else does.
For example; you're basing this on the assumption that all people are pretending to be girls by playing a female character.
That is sooooo not the case. Telling the girl's story for myself doesn't mean I want to be the girl or anything. It's simply a video game.
When I play Metroid, do I pretend to be Samus? Nah. I'm simply guiding Samus through her story.
Same is for any MMO. I don't ever see myself as my character, only that I'm watching over the character and guiding their actions.
Sometimes I feel like bringing a female character into existence when I'm playing an MMO, same as I would when I'm writing a book.
They're only characters, man.
Only.
Fiction.
But it's an escape. To experience a different life for a short time.
I wouldn't put it as so much "pretending" to be the character, but seeing the world through her eyes.
Like I said, reality is just a matter of perspective. Sometimes it's nice change views for a bit.

Indeed. I normally scale them all the way down and then complain that the minimum is too big, especially with Age of Conan.
My girlfriend generally does the same, whilst my best friend's wife scales them all the way up, no exceptions.

I say play what you want to play. I'll start caring what people think once they pay for my monthly MMO dues.

There is a reason why vanguard is still around lol. Boob sliders = win
Make it so...
Hah! True that. But I like to make my girls with big guns... though more like this:
M59, UO, EQ1, WWIIOL, PS, EnB, SL, SWG. MoM, EQ2, AO, SB, CoH, LOTRO, WoW, DDO+ f2p's, Demos & indie alpha's.
No. Being a dirty, belligerent ignoramus in this world sucks, because we're not in the Bronze Age anymore.
Of course, if that's what you think 'being a man' is, then yes, being a man sucks.
Playing: *sigh* back to WoW

Waiting for: SW:TOR, APB, WoD

Played and loved: Eve and WoW

Played and hated: WoW:WotLK, Warhammer, every single F2P
Indeed. I normally scale them all the way down and then complain that the minimum is too big, especially with Age of Conan.
My girlfriend generally does the same, whilst my best friend's wife scales them all the way up, no exceptions.
