From a more industrial perspective than perhaps many posters, but even mining benefits immensely from mining with good folks, from partipicating in groups.
Recently a corp mate of mine organised an evening mining op, nothing major, just 4 hours in hisec, with various assorted prizes. We advertised it in some friendly channels, and had about 35 people turn up of all levels of experience. Some of us have been playing for years, there was one player still on trial and another who had subscribed but who still clocked in at 9 days. Not everyone was really a miner, we had a couple of folks who mostly pvp turn up, as well as one ardent mission runner ina Marauder. A great time was had by all, and I like to think we showed some folks the advantages of participating in EVE, rather than taking the solo course. Certainly I know while the op was on the trial pilot decided to subscribe.
I think so long as one understands that the way to get most out of EVE is to do things with other people, to interact with them, either co-operatively or competitively, one is half-way through to getting EVE.
Speaking of good corps, in my opininon, this is the most important thing in EVE. If you find a good corp you will most likely have a great time and love this game. Good corp will probably offset all dislikes you might have regarding skill training or other mechanics of EVE.

It's good to hear somebody from the industrial side of Eve say this.
I think if more people tried organized fleet ops (of any kind) early on, Eve would have a much better new player retention rate.
There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own. -- Herman Melville
Well looks like I got quite the response to this thread xD
Just an update, I've been in the trial for EvE for over and week and have decided that as soon as the trial ends, I'm gonna sub. There's seriously nothing else like this, and I love almost every aspect of it so far. The community is by far the best I've been in and I got several newb corp invitations and finally settled on one and have been having a blast. There's always something interesting going on in this game as it usually has 30,000+ players online at a time! :0
Although I have yet to get involved in anything really meaningful, I'm getting there and am having a blast learning the ropes and doing the missions. Really recommend this one to anyone who was thinking about trying this. The learning curve is steppe but I feel I've got the basics down.
Again really recommend this, the universe is immersive, there's an unbeilevable amount of options on how to play, and it's a sandbox mmo done right. Just don't take out what you can't afford to lose...
Waiting for: Archeage, Darkfall 2.0, and Planetside 2.
R.I.P Shadowbane; The best MMORPG I've ever played...
