I think there silence speaks volumes on the matter.
Not sure I understand what you're trying to say, but they have come out and said it will be an open world. Though it seems peoples definition of what an open world is seems to differ.

Well in truth they have been very vague in there answer. They said there will be instanced pvp and an open pvp area.
open pvp area sounds like BG's to me. What he did not say was open world pvp.

Now with the PvP War Zones, they are going to be instanced as well?
The PvP War Zones are very similar to what you see in WAR and WoW.
Will there be any instances of open PvP or is that something you have on your map?
Well, we haven't really talked much about that yet, but I'd rather not say much about that. But since other games have that, it's a likely assumption.
So you are looking at it?
We will have open PvP play and we will have instances, I'll just put it that way.
But the wording! Why didn't he say the exact measurements of the open world? It would be too much information? I think not. It is a conspiracy of the highest level.
A good game I agree. But from the looks of the small STARTER areas, this is way more open then Dragonage.
Dragonage had tiny paths you followed. Do I expect the starter area to be mostly closed in? Sure, so you don't wander off and go die in 2 seconds to mobs 9817234890127340234 levels higher. I know I know, it's not a sandbox. We knew that a while ago!
Also, didn't you notice that the game "dropped" them where the devs wanted them to go? That when they died, they could instant rez right there. I'd venture a guess it was to help people try out the game.
I don't expect SWG open worlds. I do expect to be able to go to zone to zone ON a world with no problems.

Did anyone actually plot out all the video frames/points etc, or someone make a Logc Train that somehow justifies the Jump-To-Conclusion of the overall state of the world from the CUMULATIVE 5min of total "gameplay" footage that was screened?
So you mean there's a vid where someone actually opens the map UI and shows the size of the world?
Hell, there are current Gameplay + UI videos available from this years E3?
Right now, outside of 1yr old PAX footage, there's not enough substance to make even an Internet-Credible wild accusation of assumption about how the game is actually going to be.
Besides, inital "open-world" gameplay is kinda slow, doesn't have that appealing, marketable pacing that a focused experience can offer. What are more prospective customers going to want to watch/read up about:
A. Someone's experience in a focused, instanced player experience that's made to showcase features.
B. Someone just flying around the galaxy with no real purpose or direction.
It'll be A. More people want to watch the kind of purpose/places that will be provided for them than want to try and create their own purpose/place in a fictional world. Option B would be like trying to play D&D without a DM to run things.
Though, not sure if people care anymore about thinking things through. Irrational speculation gets you way more hits in a forum.
Hell, if they did offer an open-zone of gameplay, people would still complain, because it wouldn't be the entire game universe, so they'd still probably say its nothing but 5v5 instanced arena rhetoric rhetoric rhetoric.
Lets Push Things Forward
I knew I would live to design games at age 7, issue 5 of Nintendo Power.
Support games with subs when you believe in their potential, even in spite of their flaws.
The obvious skybox in the distance (hills/mountains painted on the sky in the distance) made me cringe but the game itself looks like it will be fun, atleast for a while. It's just not what I'm looking for in an MMO.
What I am seeing in both the Sith gameplay and the BH gameplay are pathways, platforms and 'openings'. In this respect, it seems that a SWTOR world is more like the SWG's Kashyyyk and Mustafar with their boundaries and tracks rather than SWG's open planets like Tattoine, Dantooine and the others. It must be said, however that the gameplay footage is only of the starter zones - we don't know if the game 'opens up' as you progress. We also don't know what the PVP zones look like.
You could tell all that from the few seconds of footage of people running and stuff?
OK, From what I have seen in the links to videos so far is the game is instanced with possible open world like WoW... But if you ask me even the clip with the mountain walls looks like a WoW instance.. This could be an open world, none of us really do know. But if you were going to show something in a game you are proud of why would you show an instance with group combat? We have already seen combat and even though it wasn't grouped combat we or most of us that play MMOs, I would hope could put 2 and 2 together and get an idea of it. And we have already seen plenty of voice over, so my conclusion is they are proud about one of the many instance they have in place.
If you really had vast open worlds for us to explore wouldn't you want us to take a gander at those then an closed up instance. And why would you put battle grounds in a Starwars game... Battles in Starwars happened anywhere, everywhere. To say having open world pvp would hinder the gaming experience is not true. It's been said before, but SWG got it right, or at least the idea right.
We are a part of an armed force either Imp or Reb and you could choose covert or overt, this made it your choice to take part in pvp and if you didn't, it was still around you and made you feel more a part of the Starwars world. If you say it's because of balance, they still have to keep the classes balance for the Warzones or BGs, so your point isn't really valid. At least from my point of view.
Listen I don't want the game to be instanced to hell and I hope it isn't, but take a look at what we have so far for evidence.. This is what they have shown us and they aren't really telling us any different.

Spring of 2011 is the launch date, baring any problems. So.....plenty of time for the open world demo's. The G4 link looks more like the starter areas. They are working on the starter areas as most MMO's do. They want that the most polished for launch. Then they move on to more and more areas to polish.
The group stuff looks like instances. As in WoW instances for quests. The simi-open area for the sith looked like the starter world. It was open, but limited. I hope in the next few months we see more worlds open up with more info. Until then, we have no clue and can only guess on the limted info we have.
The sandbox SWG world will not be in this game at all. There would be no way to have a story told in a wide open area like that. You will not be telling your own story as in a sandbox. You will be in a story already created. As far as battles in Starwars happening anywhere and everywhere. It seems to me that it is much more focused than that. They seem to be much bigger coordinated operations. Attacks and defence type battles, not random killing in the country side.
They did leave hints at open world PvP as a possiblity. Again though, it will probably be more like WoW PvP servers with WAR/WoW warzones along with it. We have to wait to find that out though.
How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them? R.A.Salvatore

No. From the 40 mins plus of gameplay footage now released at E3 plus the footage, imagery and screenshots released over the previous two years.
I think the 'lovers' should not be so offended when someone is critical about ToR. I do not hate ToR and I do not want it to fail. Why would anyone want that? Seriously it is the same standard response as "go back to wow" etc. I love starwars and bioware but I do have some worries about the game, I am so sorry that I dare to be objective....
The reason i'm critical and doubting ToR is because of the information and footage they have NOT given us. I'm not saying that the given footage gives a perspective of the entire game, but it is weird that bioware gives us this footage that isn't much different from the previous footage. Look at it this way:
The ships were revealed and everybody was like ' yeeaah!' . However the objective people already said that it would probably be similar to Kotor and that would imply that there is no space combat/travel and it was just housing. However you 'lovers' instantly whent ragemode to these people saying things like "you dont know that, so stfu hater" and "they will reveal it later, so stfu". The problem is your logic. Why would bioware reveal ships but not reveal spacecombat or travel. Why would they keep that from us? The thing is that in these kind of reveals, they want to focus on the postive and avoid anything that is negative or dissapointing. So that is why they wouldn't say "there will be no space combat" as there won't be any and this is not positive. If there would be, they would have stated so because everybody would love it and increases the hype etc. The same thing goes for the open world. They keep saying that it is an open world, however the footage never confirms it. It has been a debate for a long time now, so to deplete this negative criticism you would think they would give us footage that showed us an actual openworld.
The things that im affraid of is the things they havn't said yet. When you ask something like will there be space combat, and the developer doesn't answer it, it is quite possible that there won't be any. Bioware's silence and vagueness on these subjects might confirm more than you think. Or maybe i'm just wrong. Time will tell. I still have hope!
What you people should be thinking about is why they have not come out and said what it will be like and end this rumor once and for all.
I think there silence speaks volumes on the matter.
Why should they release all the info about the game now? The fact that they haven't is whats creating a lot of debates about the game, be it good or bad opinions it's still got people talking about the game which is probably exactly what they are trying to do.
I'm not a fan of the Star Wars IP and not really a fan of sci-fi in general. Though if need be if TOR would be the next great MMO then I would give it a try at least but from what I see in the videos so far is that the combat is slow and not as impressive as they seem to act as it is. Basically the combat has different animations for more actions then in a normal MMO but its still the sit and click style that has existed for sometime, while it's better it's not impressive. I wont really comment on the open world thing cause I don't know, it seems like its very instance based but there is no proof that it all is so I can't really comment on it. I just feel that TOR is made for people who liked SW:KOTOR rather then people who are into MMOs in general. So, it seems as though once your done with the story line quests then there is no point in playing the game anymore unless you plan to do it for every class and I personally am not into that.
What you people should be thinking about is why they have not come out and said what it will be like and end this rumor once and for all.

This, or they just avoid saying anything negative....time will tell. But the fact that they didn't say anything about spacecombat or exploration when they revealed the ships, seemed like avoiding negative criticism. I do not believe that they will still reveal combat or exploration in space and they just avoided the specific topic to not give any negative information. I'm sorry but since the WaR scam by mythic, I do not rely on promises anymore. But its BIOWARE!. Ye, i remember: It is MYTHIC!!!!! THEY CREATED DAOC!!!!.....

The whole "It will do well cause it's Bioware" is pretty silly. Bioware makes single player games. It seems as though TOR will sell well and people will play it for around 3 months and it will probably start dropping off from there. So it will more then likely not fail but it doesn't seem to have lasting power.
(SPOILER ALERT!) All the Jedi's die. (well, with only a couple notable exeptions) Alderaan gets sploded. Anyhoo, I digress...
Open world is a huge issue for me. I'm sick of the linear funnel many of the newer mmo's force you through. If I wanna go north, I want to 'feel' like I can go north untill I can't go any farther and have it feel 'natural'...not forced. For example, in Warhammer or Aion I feel like I can get to anywhere I could ever need to go by running down ONE really really really long road...or teleporting from an npc.
So to me, open world means a world where I feel like I can travel in any direction and have the percieved experience of boundaries being natural. I didn't even like the 'fatigue' that happens in WoW, but I guess if you were going to try to swim accross an ocean, it would be pretty tiring :P At least it wasn't some invisible wall in most cases. Another WoW example...the border between Duskwood and Elwynn Forest wasn't some little hole in the mountains...it was a very long river. You could literally swim down the river for 10 minutes and weave in back and forth between the two HUGE zones and have no issues at all. You had the 'impression' that you could go anywhere. Well, now they're going to have flying so you really can go anywhere in any direction at any time. To me, that's the type of open world I'm hoping for.
Personally, I'm not expecting WoW size environments, I'm not expecting SWG size planets. I AM expecting AOC size environments though. But if Bioware manage to implement SWG or WoW size seamless environments, then that'll be a bonus.
"open world" means different things to different people. Some are happy with AOC, some are happy with SWG, some don't even like the more "natural" barriers in Wow (e.g. Qazz hehe).
These videos have neither confirmed nor disproven anything in terms of gameworld environment size. Let's wait and see before jumping to such conclusions.
The closer we get to release the more likely it becomes that this game is going to be strike two for the Star Wars IP.
And this time it might not even be the games fault, it will be the constant nit-picking and whining of it's fan/playerbase that does it in.
The BEST and ONLY way to tell if you're going to like a game or not, is to freaking play it! not one of you has done that yet, so why bother with all this speculation? no one is going to come to your house and tell you they saw your post on MMOrpg.com way back when and that you were exactly right. Instead of the blind leading the blind we have the blind claiming to see more clearly than the blind. Its enough already.

Top 10 Most Misused Words in MMO's
