AoC had horrendous requirements and still broke 1M box sales. People just went and upgraded their boxes if they felt necessary.
14 intsallments in an IP >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> System requirements for the people who this game is intended for.
Actually the steep system requirements is one of the things that drove players away. AoC may have sold a million copies but they retained like what maybe 100k players at most and that was partly due to computer issues being to steep.
You seem to be leaving out the fact that according to Funcom, people didn't need to upgrade. Wasn't until the game shipped and everybody realized that the "recommended" system configuration printed on the box was still not enough to run the game at good detail.
At least SE gave us a tool to tell us, and 3 months to save up for equipment.
So again, no, won't affect sales a bit. Those who love FF will play it. Those who can't afford new cards will turn down settings until they can. That's how FF fans are. Hard to explain on an MMORPG forum, because, well.. only true FF fan I've seen here other than me is Hyanmen.
"If I'd asked my customers what they wanted, they'd have said a faster horse." - Henry Ford
I know it will certainly have an impact on the launch, but then again, what kind of population does SE want?
They said they're looking on bringing the single player FF fans to this game, just like Blizzard brought their WC3/Diablo/Starcraft fans to WoW.
And considering FFXII sold like 6 million copies, FFXIII 5,5... if they can bring in half of them, that should be plenty. And most of them play on the PS3, so the PC requirements won't affect their decision negatively.
I think that's what they thought too.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
No it won't hurt their sales, cause this is the same thing that happened with FFXI...back then the requirements were also quite steep and my top of the line PC then was barely pulling in a 1500-1800 score on their benchmark. Now 8 years later, and with a little registry editing, I find FFXI to rival most of the newer MMOs in style and art...so really pushing your potential consumers to have a beefy rig paid off,
And if ya don't have a PC capable of running FFXIV or can't afford to purchase new or upgrade an existing system, there is always the PS3 version coming you can play it on.
This isn't much differnt that what happened with FFXI, as it launched in May 2002 only on the PS2, and then 6 months later in November 2002, it got a PC release!
There are pros and cons to the system reqs. Yes, they are somewhat high, but at least we'll be able to have great visuals on PC; one of the things i didn't like about FFXI is being stuck with graphics that were way behind what my PC was capable of. With the way PC standards evolve, though, people should easily be able to meet the minimum specs within a year or so.
At least it'll look good on ps3 as well

New PC sales are in double digit growth margins for the past 6 months apparently.
About the benchmark, it takes actual levels from the game (as it states) these are not optimized right now.
Beta is just about to kick off.
Think about if AoC can pull in 3/4 of a million people at launch ( 2 yrs ago!) and such high specs the percentage of those who can not play FFXIV is going to be very small.
I think the pricing model would cause more concern.
Honestly no, so I have to spend a few hundred bucks to get my system up to a certain standard. It's not a big deal because I budget things. I don't think FF was honestly expecting to bring in the same crowd that was despirately holding on to the older machine that could still run WoW. The dedicated gamer keeps their PC up to a certain standard on the gaming scene with updates in technology. I upgrade parts usually every 18 months to 2 years, because I want the best gaming environment I can handle for my budget. It's not that much if you budget that money out over the 2 years 20 bucks a month keeps you solid.
I tell you what how about we all just forget about technology advancements and go back to playing space invaders!
people need to get with the times and upgrade , if they cant afford it in one big go then try and save a little bit at a time , technology needs to move on and so does everyone else otherwise we would still be living in the stoneages!

Technology is at the whim of the people not vice versa. The best technology in the world is junk if no one buys it. Remember the laser disk? Perfect example, it was better than VHS, but people werent interested, and it tanked.
Technology only goes as far as people are willing to pay for it to go.

Yep, which is why no game should in reality go beyond the capabilities of what consoles can offer. That is how you shoot yourself in the foot.
As long as consoles can handle the game, it is still on an acceptable level. Consoles really give you the best bang for your buck, as far as hardware goes. If a $300 PS3 can run a game like XIV, I think it's a worthwhile trade-off.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
I voted no. I think it is a next gen mmorpg so I would expect to need a more powerful system than a computer that can handle an old game like WoW. The PS3 release next year may actually help the launch as it will reduce sever load and give SE more time to make the XIV for PS3 perfect. As for me, I am just gushed and geeked at a Sept launch...just need to make certain I have a multi-core Xeon workstation handy.
MMORPGs should be released with high system reqs. It is important because you want the game to STILL look good in 5 years. Not every game is like WoW - with massive budgets to revamp the graphics engine in every expansion.
If you can't afford a $600 PC (which is all you need to play almost any game these days if you know how to buy/build a good PC) then you can always wait until the PS3 version comes out.

Well keep in mind that WoW had much better graphics for the time. Do you know if the benchmarks set were on the lower end or higher end of the game's graphical settings? Also the PS3 is mighty impressive thanks to that cell processor. So to make two entirely different graphical systems would be a lot of work for them.
At what point are developers allowed to move on and not support 5 year old computers?
A current gen PC with modest specs is going to have a quad core CPU, a pretty decent video card and 4 GB of RAM. FF isn't being targeted towards the Free Realms crowd, it's more of a gamers game. So, no I don't think they are shooting themselves in the foot. FF is the type of game that people who are lagging behind spec-wise decide to upgrade for.

FYI they don't revamp the graphics engines. That would effect the whole game.
They have changed almost nothing.
They are just better at creating textures now, and also people's computers can handle the textures they make.
I think you could play games with a 600$ PC, also, but it wouldn't look good.

It's not that they shouldn't support 5 year old PCs.
It's about people who don't normally play games and don't have nice computers. People who will play this at work.
oh wow ... wish I had seen this part before I replied:
Windows XP/Vista/7, Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz or AMD Athlon X2 2GHz, 2GB of RAM, 15GB HDD space, NVIDIA GeForce 9600 512MB or ATI Radeon HD 2900 512MB and DirectX 9
That's REALLY not high end. You could get that in a laptop for $500 ... Moreover you can get a pretty damn good desktop for $600-800 that will play it on high settings for sure.

Are you just making stuff up and spouting it liek you know what you're talking about?
The entire graphics engine in WoW was redone for BC (in Outland only) and then again in WoTLK (especially for Northrend, but all areas were updated). You can see further and clearer than you could ever have seen before. My $2k PC can not maintain a perfect 60 FPS in Northrend with settings on "Ultra" - there was no Ultra setting pre-WoTLK. Draw distance is HUGE now. Textures in new areas are far higher in resolution.
And in a couple of months when Cataclysm comes out, the entire old world is getting redone to be at the same standards. Every square inch of the World of Warcraft will effectively be upgraded.
Also, in regards to your other stupid comment - no one will play this game at work.
The PC requirements are not steep for any gamer. The PS3 version is even more thrifty. No non-gamers are going to randomly pick up this game - and if they do, it won't be system requirements that make them regret their purchase.

yes it will affect sales as of this so called credit crunch not many ppl will have money to upgrade to a better system but on plus side it keeps the 10yr old noobs out cause i doubt younger gamers will be like "mum can i have $200-300 so i can upgrade my pc to play this game" but then agian they could play it on pc but i think pc members would have advantage when it comes to boss fights hotkey ect ps3 id use only for grinding reallly as its bit easyier with controler

They are an odd company, so it's hard to read anything.
Really though, it does not take that much to score mid range on the benchmark.
If you are anywhere near where any average computer game should have their rig, you shouldn't have an issue playing it.

well i got a score of 1400 on the low setting
p 3hz d dual core
windows xp
500gb hd
9600gt 512mb
2gb ddr2
and with the score i got dont think this game will hardly run. yet i play aoc with no probs at all has well has vanguard and eq2.
so what are we talking price range to play this game for a new card £300 ? i know for 1 i will not pay so much just to play one game ..
what cards are good theses days im lost after the 900 ones.
ps can you play with keyboard and mouse ? was going to play on the ps3 but with a 6 mouth delay thats a no go now .

Dude, you need more system RAM...
I won't run anything less than 8G anymore..

Why would they be ? Any game that has high system specs I applaud because it keeps the majority of WoW community out of the game. Its a good thing.
