Well so is Diablo 2, but its also not listed on this site. (Diablo 2 is a mmog, not mmorpg).
Guild Wars is a mmoRpg, because you assume the role of a character in a massively multiplayer, persistant online world, which is why its listed on this site. Different yes, but it fits all the classifications of the genre.
Originally posted by Xzaro Uhh no, Diablo 2 is not a MMOG, just an online game. I do not think that less than 50 players could be considered "massive".
lol 50 there was alot more then 50 playing diablo when i lasted played it...
Uh yes there is, and its very very comparable to Guild Wars. Its been called Diablo 3. The big thing is that instead of a chat-room to form groups you can do it in an online environment.
I think what he means by Diablo 2 having no mass is that you can have 8 people, max, in a game.
As for the topic itself, never played Guildwars, so can't comment on it, but WoW got boring after a few weeks for me. Might try GW, might not, will wait for it to come out to look into it.
guild wars this is from the official guild wars FAQ:
Rather than labeling Guild Wars an MMORPG, we prefer to call it a CORPG (Competitive Online Role-Playing Game). Guild Wars was designed from the ground up to create the best possible competitive role-playing experience. Success in Guild Wars is always the result of player skill, not time spent playing or the size of one's guild. As characters progress, they acquire a diverse set of skills and items, enabling them to use new strategies in combat. Players can do battle in open arenas or compete in guild-vs-guild warfare or the international tournament. Engaging in combat is always the player's choice, however; there is no player-killing in cooperative areas of the world.
WoW although WoW claims to be an MMORPG, it lacks some key elements, making it nothing more than a big 3d chat room for a single player game.
there is no pvp integrated into the game world, it's instead instanced in the "battlegrounds" scam as an excuse for not bothering to make the actual game world dynamic. quests are also instanced, again removing them from the actual game and into a separate dimension. entering an instance is just like joining a HL server.
RPing is also something that isn't a natural part of the game. since everything is static and nothing in the world can actually be changed, RPers are forced to make up stories rather than actually play them out.
Guild Wars wins my vote. I have been playing WoW since release though it is time to look into another game now. Reasons why I like guildwars.
1) The combat is based on skill not who spends for time playing.
2) The PVP is fair - no immature fools ganking for 3 days in the same area and if you complain you get " than don't join a pvp server noob " you all know it. Aswell GW's PVP will be more skill based by far.
3) I know WoW graphics are suppost to fit the storyline and they are nice, but GW beats it in graphics.
4) No monthly fee of course. Why am I even paying Blizzard? If blizzard was my electric company I would not stand for all this downtime, They would have lost a customer.....
Overall GW is a better game in many aspects, many people listed most of them already. After playing GW Beta and going back to WoW for a bit, it seems really childish of a game compared to GW. Now only to wait for GW release. Guildwars.com Enjoy.
GuildWars has much more interesting ideas. The Skill System is great and you can choose the way you like to play. PvP or PvE its just funny. Better graphics (not ugly comic style) and more fun without delays - i vote for guildwars !
It's a bit hard to compare Guild Wars with WoW since GW is not actually a mmorpg as some people have stated. I played WoW about a month and then got bored to it and sold it. The main reason for that is the lack of different kinds of quests. Yes there are lots of quests, but they are all the same really. Either you collect something, kill something or escort someone somewhere. In GW the quests are a lot more fun I think.
And the pvp in wow... oh the pvp... what pvp? one on one works fine, but try 30 on 30. The lag is horrible. In GW you basically don't have lag since you compete in small guild vs guild matches and on top of that, it's so much more fun when there are not just some random people trying to kill one another. And that is the main reason why I'm gonna play GW once it is released. GW pvp >>> WoW pvp.
Also the graphics in WoW are not for me. The WinXP'ish candy look is just ok, but not good. GW has a lot more epic touch and oh boy that's some great eyecandy!
Originally posted by azn1337gamer Guild wars is good but WoW is so much better. WoW has stunning graphics with awesome gameplay. Also it is a monthly fee game which=GOOD GAMES!
WOW's PVP is pedestrian at best. It's very unbalanced and isn't all that fun. It's a total gank fest as well right now. The game has fantastic graphics and the PVE (player vs. environment) gameplay is very good. But, bottom line, the PvP aspect stinks and the Monthly fee of $14.95 is far too high for a game that just doesn't feel finished. We warned them in Beta that it wasn't ready, they ignored us.
Another big problem that WoW has is stability. The PVP areas constantly crash. What do they expect with something like 1.5 million subscribers? I'd give WOW about 3 more months before trying it. Right now the frustration level is very high. Most folks I knwo that tried it are flocking back to EQ2 EQ1, SWG and whatever other title they left to try WoW.
GuildWars I cannot speak to, I haven't played it.

I've seen a lot of people say that WoW is better right off. I think that it's a little too early to judge between WoW and Guild Wars. Guild wars is one of the most anticipated games for now and it seems like a very nice game. WoW is a decent game, but has many problems. I think we can decide for sure which is better when Guild Wars is officially released. Btw, my opinion...Guild Wars>WoW!
Can I make a signature? I would if I could, but I can't so I won't.
I'd say defenatly guildwars. Both are games with disposable content; meaning once you've done a quest or instance, there's really no point doing it again.
I really like grouping. In WoW I liked doing the instances if I could find a decent group. However, I really hated the solo/quest grinding in the outdoor areas of WoW. Guild Wars is pretty much all grouping and has a decent LFG/Lobby system, so its really easy to find a pickup group. Guild Wars reminds me of WoW if it was all instances. Plus the added bonus that its free. I suppose once you've done all the levels in Guild Wars, the game will get borring, but the same is true for WoW.
Guild Wars seems to have better, more balanced, PVP. Unless you just want to run around ganking people you will probubly find Guild War's PVP better overall.
The PVP and continued expantions should keep people interested in GW for the long run. Blizzard is too slow at releasing content to keep its players busy.

If Guild Wars was a taco, and WoW a burrito, I'd definetely be saying I'm having mexican food tonight!
Ummm I hate to break this to you but Guild wars is definitely an MMOG. MMOG is a "Massively Multiplayer Online Game"
Guild Wars is all of those things.
You may like WoW better than GW (I know I did) but that doesn't mean that GW isn't an MMOG.

I tried Guild Wars... its fantastic if you ask me, really really great
I wish I had a credit card ;/
MMORPG - MASS MULTIPLAYER ONLINE role playing game = Guild War
ONLINE RPG - ONLINE ROLE PLAYING GAME = DIABLO 2
there is no MASS in Diablo 2, there is a MASS of people in GUILD WAR....
Curses =(

Just a quick post to inform LightSlayer, and a few others who continually do this.. that it's "Guild Wars". Wars. Plural.
Thank you. Have a nice day.

Guild wars would actually be decent (i last played it during the preview event ages ago)..
If it had decent movement..Hope its fixed..
The arena is just brilliant...best MMORPG battlefield (excluding Planetside)
WoW is excellent..
