If I wanted to play endless generated mission content I would go back to Anarchy Online. I enjoy the Star Trek IP in almost every incarnation with the exception of Enterprise. 60's original Trek being my favorite so this MMO shoulda been a draw for me but they way they implemented it killed it for me. EvE and STO appeal to different audiences, but seeing that you want to compare the two.. EvE beats STO in every department, graphics, depth, crafting, customizability, content and more so.
I will take a Caladari Characal or a Minmatar Rifter over a Constellation class just on style alone.
Now, despite my personal dislike for EvE, I agree with some of this. However, how in the Hell can you state that EvE has more customizability than STO?
i am thinking cause you can fit ships whatever way you like to do whatever job you want it to do(Like a Hurricane BC lets say ive got an armor tanked close range nuet tackler, A long ranged nano snipa then a salvager looter type and i use it for PI in 0,0). you have implants, boosters and cross train whatever race you like so no class system its just one big whatever you want to do. no other game has that btw.
I just downloaded the Trial OF StarTrek Online on Steam, and I was shocked at the actual game play.
I myself am not really into a lot of space combat, and wont say that StarTrek Online is the best MMO, because honestly it isn't, but it is better than eve online VS their game play, 100X better.
When I started the Demo I made a character, and then I ran the Quick Help, and training, It was actually simple, and Detailed of how to play the game.
The Over all Space Combat, is more fun, and better than in EVE online in my view VS the full automatic combat in eve, In Startrek, you actually have to Adjust shields to survive, and such, and fire your weapons correctly to destroy ships, and it makes PVP, and pve more fun.
I ran on MAX Graphics with no lag at all, everything Max.
So for those looking for a decent MMO to try, You can download the Free StarTrek Demo from Steam.
What surprises me is how ignorant a lot of MMO players are and more so the ones that are registered on these forums, who you would have thought know more about MMOs then the average Joe.
Don't we all know that MMOs are not built in a day, 90% of them are released incomplete (this does not make it right but it is what happens) , and often change direction once they are released, this has happend over and over again.
And yet if the game is not perfect from day one then there are a lot of doubters and nay sayers. These guys hide later when the game turns itself around, do you know how many people posted about the failure of AOC, Failcom etc, look at it now.
When Eve was first released it was not what it is now, it got 6.5 from Gamespot review, I can remember it clearly. And yet look at it now.
So before you go shooting your mouth off about how crap STO is you should consider what you are saying in relation to this genre. And if you are truely an MMO fan then you should be supporting MMOs and their developers so that we do not end up with one massive developer like Blizzard, because of the lack of support given by us, the MMO enthusiast (the reason you have an account here perhaps), to the smaller developers, do not let your greed for the 'perfect game on day one' be the downfall of the whole genre.

Oh, hang on I've just fainted and knocked my head on a table.
There's no way you can compare EVE Online to STO. I'm a former player of STO and I'm still a playing EVE. STO is lacking in many ways.
First of all, the engine is rubbish and limiting, and to be honest if I was Cryptic's CEO that would be the first thing that would get replaced. The next thing I would do, is to get some true Trekkers on staff. Because honestly if they have got any, they’re seriously deluding them selves. STO charges micro transactions for ships and equipment, on top of your subscription. So your paying twice, and I can go on, and on, all day long.
EVE on the other hand, has very few problems, and those problems that do exist, CCP working on. And when EVE does a expansion, they really do an expansion. They also only charge a subscription, they don't charge you for ships and equipment. 2500 plus star systems in EVE v 50 plus star systems in STO.
And last, but not lest, “I feel like Cryptic as conned me.”
I think I've made my point.
Your point is that in YOUR opinion Eve is better than STOL. And the OPs opinion is that STOL is better than Eve
So thank you for letting us know your opinion...........next please.
PS: Comparing a game with about 10 years development with one with 3years is a tad unfair.
Yes, it is just opinion. But like the exmple I gave earlier, anyone who thinks a Thomas Kinkade painting (STO) is better than a van Gogh (EVE) is probably a very poor judge of art (MMOs).
If you are comparing STO day one space combat to day one EVE space combat, it probably is better. If you are comparing them after that, you should probably put down the crackpipe and slowly step away.
Now, despite my personal dislike for EvE, I agree with some of this. However, how in the Hell can you state that EvE has more customizability than STO?
The only thing that's properly customizable in STO are the costumes. Which is something that's ripped directly from CO and has 0 bearing on the game whatsoever. While the ships can be customized to some degree, it doesn't hold a candle to how you can customize EVE ships. STO ships are all pure combat and don't have a lot of options on how to make different fits actually differentiate themselves from one another, whereas in EVE you can fit the same ship for a dozen different roles (though admittedly it won't be good at most of them, the possibility is still there). If you take EVE's tech 3 ships into consideration it's a massive loss for STO.
Now i'm a hardcore EVE fan, but i admit that the game is far from the best MMO at the moment. Though saying that STO is better is just hilarious - EVE is a far better Star Trek game than STO.
While this is your opinion and I respect that...you pretty much list only your positive opinions while comparing it to the "other" space MMO out there and give us details on how we can try it out for ourselves?
Something don't smell right but I can also see how you came to these conclusions after only a day of playing(I was fairly hyped up myself). Please return after a week or so and give us your review then.
Thank you sir.
P.S. Saying STO gameplay is better than EVE's by 100X is flippin' mad bro.
I don't play STO but EvEs gameplay is boring as hell. I've played the beta of STO and while it isn't great its still better than EvE.
These two games are so far apart in the genre they can hardly even be compared to each other, certainly not with as inadequate a sumation as "better".
The garphics in Eve are lightyears ahead of STO and its an older engine older game. The games are so totally diferent in gmaeplay and structure I don't even know how to begin comparing them except to say they are completely diffferent. I have played both games, eve for some time, and STO for about 3 months, and I could not say one area in STO where I thought the game was better... not PvP not graphics, not depth, not community ... I did like actually having a venue for my character to interact with the rest of the game outside of the starship. But that slone was not a feature of the game that made it better in my eyes.
But then all of this is opinion, just goes to show how different peoples tastes are.
Your point is that in YOUR opinion Eve is better than STOL. And the OPs opinion is that STOL is better than Eve

About all Cryptic is good for is character customization and they brag about it for every game. So if you like to play make believe dress up, any Cryptic game will suffice . So all you kiddies that were deprived as children of playing with Barbie and Ken dolls and being able to dress them up , have at it.
Regardless of your opinion, its wrong to compare a 7 year old game with a 7 week game.
Its not fair on both gaming studio's
I have to disagree with this.If two products ar ein competition for your money it is extremely fair and wise to compare and contrast on thme and any other products a cosumer deems competing for their dollar.

Fair enough, but both games are aimed at different markets really. They dont really compete with each other and the development studio's in these cases would agree.
but they are both radically different games and have had radically different amounts of development time. It's like comparing a developing country to a developed country. Of course some people prefer one over the other, but neither is "better" than the other.
i am thinking cause you can fit ships whatever way you like to do whatever job you want it to do(Like a Hurricane BC lets say ive got an armor tanked close range nuet tackler, A long ranged nano snipa then a salvager looter type and i use it for PI in 0,0). you have implants, boosters and cross train whatever race you like so no class system its just one big whatever you want to do. no other game has that btw.
Umm, you can fit whatever you want on whatever ship so long as the player is high enough level to use the gear and the ship has enough slots in STO as well. Also, the ships in STO can be cusomized (somewhat) on the outer appearance to make something that is more unique rather than EvE where every Apoc looks the same. Not to mention the amount of customizability of skills, gear, and appearance of the player and all of his bridge officers.

All that's nice. Is it necessary to hit any keys on your keyboard other than the space bar or the letter F to play Eve?

You're absolutely wrong. They are not released incomplete 90% of the time. You're trying to do what Cryptic does and say that a game releasing and then naturally evolving, which is what most mmos do by the way, is the same as a game releasing with very little content, and adding most of it's content AFTER release. That's just plain BS, simple as that.
And yet if the game is not perfect from day one then there are a lot of doubters and nay sayers. These guys hide later when the game turns itself around, do you know how many people posted about the failure of AOC, Failcom etc, look at it now.
Look at what now? A game that with the release of a PAID expansion 2 years 3 months after it original release is only now FINALLY at a state it should have bee n at release? Not to mention that regardless it STILL has an anemic population? Ya, you don't want people looking at AoC if you're looking for positives.
When Eve was first released it was not what it is now, it got 6.5 from Gamespot review, I can remember it clearly. And yet look at it now.
Except it didn't portray itself as being able to offer anything more than it did at the time, and CCP didn't continuously lie through their teeth about what players will experience once they bought the game. Both are things that Cryptic is doing to this day.
You need to get a wake up call. You're attitude is what's doing so much harm to the genre these days. It's because of people like you that will pay mmo developers for sub-standard products that we are seeing this string of crap and unfinished games get released. If people would stop giving these shoddy companies money for their shoddy efforts, all these companies would get the message that, at the very very least, they better deliver on what they advertise the game to be, and provide games that people can enjoy over the long term. As opposed to games like STO that only provide a couple of weeks of enjoyment for the average casual gamer, and end up driving many many more people away from the genre in disgust than all the other games out there can attract.
It's not up to us to pay for mmo development. We pay for what they've done, and if enough of us pay the company can choose to use some of their profits for expansions, and then we pay them for what they've done again if we want. If I'm going to finance a game's development, then I should be able to get a financial return on that investment. THAT's how the real world works bub.
I just downloaded the Trial OF StarTrek Online on Steam, and I was shocked at the actual game play.

Really? So I can fit a probe launcher/mining laser/tractor beam/whatever on my Star Trek ship? Of course not. EVE ships can do more things than combat, such as explore, mine, carry cargo, etc. This is why you can customize your EVE ship to do far more stuff than your STO ship. In STO combat is the only thing you can do really.

I'll give you one for the sensor probes not being launched for long distance sensors.
Why in the Hell would anyone have to mine in the Star Trek universe when they have replicators?
Tractor Beams are in the game via Bridge Officers.

Actually, if you watched the shows, they did have mining outposts; Starfleet needs resources just like anyone else. Did you think those replicators were magic? They took raw materials from the ship's stores and rearranged the molecules, but someone had to provide those resources. Heck, you even saw mining outposts in the game. Additionally, if Cryptic ever gets around to adding in player fleet starbases and shipyards, you will need to mine resources if they stick by their original idea.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again; tractor beams should be standard ship equipment and not some stupid skill. Let the bridge officers have skills that allow you to use the tractor beams in unusual ways, but every ship should have access to them by default.
