Star Wars: The Old Republic: Playable Species Revealed

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Star Wars: The Old Republic devs have announced four playable species for the game. Non-human species for players to choose from include: Red-skinned Sith Purebloods, near-human Miraluka, Mirialans, and Zabraks. Each of these races will excel at a given class: Sith Purebloods as Sith Warriors; Miralukas as Jedi Knights; Mirialans as Jedi Consulars; and Zabraks as Sith Inquisitors.

So far we’ve only dropped hints about the range of playable species in Star Wars™: The Old Republic™. You may have heard about the Rattataki Bounty Hunter, Chiss Imperial Agent, or the Twi’lek Smuggler, but we can tell you now that all classes will include optional non-human species.

Among the most exciting character types you’ll be able to choose from is the Sith Pureblood. For the first time ever in a video game, Players can choose to be a member of the original Sith Race, the red-skinned descendants of such notorious Sith Lords as Naga Sadow and Marka Ragnos. The rage of these fallen ancestors of the Sith Pureblood lives on in the Sith Warriors who dominate the battlefield with their intimidating presence and aggressive tactics.

Read the full article here and check out each races' screenshot in our SWTOR Screenshot Gallery.

Nice, interesting that they put the sith race in as playable.

What makes me not so happy is that they are sticking races with classes for the time being.  I have a good feeling they'll open that up later and have some races being able to hop around,  but I wish they'd release these classes without the need to feign restrictions.

On the other hand though,  really great race choices.

Where's the Wookiee love? I'm still waiting to hear, Wookiee Smuggler with Bowcaster. That would so rock.

I believe they will tie in certain backgrounds to each race which influences the storyline a bit (maybe similar to DAO), which might limit the amount of races available for each class.

Hopefully they are being cunningly secretive about the near-non-human races and they plan on a ginormous race selection. Otherwise it seems they are simply recoloring humans X times... could have just given me a slider bar for colors.

Not that I have to play a trandoshan or wookie (for example), but the Star Wars universe would lose some flavor if I only ever saw NPC wookies.

Makes perfect sense in the Star Wars lore to stick races with classes.  Some species in the Star Wars galaxy are not foce-sensitive... meaning they can never be Jedi / Sith.  At the same time, this also means these species are not succeptable to Jedi mind control / persuasion...

Not sure if TOR is going to use this mechanic or not, but it would certainly be cool if they did.

Wookiees will not be playable, you can stop hoping; they'd need to make completely custom armour and Wookiees can't speak normally.

    There are Wookiee companions though.

The sith are extinct, that red-skinned guy is a ZABRAK and NOT a sith. Either bioware got it wrong (ignoring StarWars iron-clad lore) or the correspondants here are lacking considerably.

I'd listen to a wookie for 800 hours. Why you might ask? Because wookies are BAD freaking ASS, and the ability to rip off someone's arms is always priceless when you wave them infront of your enemy you just stole them from :D!

I think thats debateable though,  twi-leks should be able to be jedi, as should zabrak, etc.  What would be sad is to have only one alternate race per class....   I know it won't be that restrictive,  but in the off chance it is,  I would be somewhat disappointed.

I think that's one of the coolest things about Star Wars.. There are so many races/classes they can add if they'd like in future exspansions.

  • purewitzpurewitz Member UncommonPosts: 489

If thats the case, I guess I'll be a human or twi'lek smuggler. Also I wouldn't mind as you put it the gnarls. OK so Wookiees don't speak galactic basic (english),  but we knew what Chewie was saying because of Han. Wookiees could have a companion like Han.

So what you're telling me is that they're butchering the original iron-clad lore even further than originionally anticipated?

First off, the Sith were NOT (and are NOT) an evil race of people. The dark jedi found them long ago and learned from them, only to betray (and kill them off) in order to steal their knowledge and tech. THERE ARE NO LIVING DECENDANTS OF THE SITH. They are dead, gone, and obliterated. What "LucasArts" are butchering as "The Sith" in this game are ACTUALLY just Dark Jedi, not sith.

Let me say this again, the sith NO LONGER exist in this time period (after the old republic, but before the galactic war). This has already been fleshed out YEARS before episode 1 (the movie) was even produced.

So I'll reiterate my origional statement, the sith do NOT exist.....that picture is of a red Zabrak with face tattoos (read up on zabraks please and look at the picture).

Faded, you're right: The picture in the article is a Zabrak. The Sith Pureblood image is in our gallery. There was no claim that the article image was a Sith.

And, FTR, didn't skip your post, we posted at the same time. :)

Edit: I put a link on the words Sith Pureblood that leads to the image in the gallery.

Are you a moron, just asking. Yes one of the pics they have is a Zabrak but there's another one with a purblood sith. While the lore has it that the sith race is all but extict in the vader years, in this timeline though, it is very possible that there are decendents that are still around.

    Here's a screenshot of Pureblood: http://cdn-www.swtor.com//sites/all/files/en/ss/SS_20100806_SithPureblood01_full.jpg

With those eyebrows, they look like the original Sith to me.
