I will like Guild Wars for right now, BUT

-I haven't tested it yet, so it might change
-WoW is a GREAT MMORPG, and there might not be no other game to beat it

I just think it's too early to ask such questions, because WoW just came out, and will be a lot bettter in a year, or two. Guild Wars didn't even come out.
So I will be back here in some time, and will answer the question differently::::19::

Ha, GW isn't even out yet and its much more popular, wait till it's released, it will be the most popular!! Theres no point in paying a monthly fee for a game you will get bored of in a few months, but GW offer a game with no monthly fee and constantly changing content, so you never get bored. I think its great. I won't waste my money on other MOGs!!

Is there anything to GW besides the PvP? It sounds like everybody will only use the arena to beat each other up. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Are there any good and complex social (besides the teaming up) or RPG elements in it or is it just a masive online strategy game? What lured me to MMORPG´s are the social aspects (professions, selling and making stuff, having your house...). That´s why I want to try Dark and Light more than anyother MMORPG (even with it´s boring looking graphics -compared to GW or WoW-).

I´m having really fun times with wow. It ain´t full RPG, but I party with at least another player everyday (freaking Friend´s list is reaaally full) and enjoy exploring the gameworld.

I´ll probably get it anyways because it´s FREEimage, has great technical aspects (no patches, one world) and the graphics look great (but I also love wow´s).

They are different games, but I think GW is made for a player like me. I like getting into a game, playing for a little while, accomplishing something, then leaving. GW has alot less downtime than WoW which will allow me to do that

Guild Wars > WoW because of the great emphasis on PvP.

MMORPGs just get boring without good, solid PvP. Guild Wars PvP is far better than WoW. Honestly.. yes PvP exists in WoW, but it isn't significant. Battlegrounds sound alright on WoW.. but it isn't even implemented yet. So for now I am going to stick with Guild Wars.

Even the old LineAge2 is better that WoW.

Guild Wars is the best of them all. Just look at the graphics, WoW is about 2 years behind....

I'm leaning towards Guild Wars.  I played WoW from December to Febuary.  WoW's solid, but it's sounding more and more like it was rushed out for Christmas sales without some features being fully thought through.  Like for instance, a reason for PvP other than to grief noobs.  And no monthly costs is also a plus. image

Guild Wars is still an MMO.

a note for UK residents: Guild Wars can be pre-ordered for £18 (free delivery) from play.com (cheapest i've seen it). I hear they also deliver free to some european countries. Makes the £38 i paid for a US import seem pretty expensive :(

    ---sig---

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

Having played both WoW and the beta of Guild Wars, I'd have to say this is kind of an unfair question.  Really the games couldn't be more different.

    But pros and cons.

    Guild Wars (Pros)

Amazing graphics.  I give GW the nod in this category because the lighting, the textures, the animations ... everything is just smoother and more realistic.  Although I will say too many people dis WoW for it's "cartoonish" graphics.  They're really quite good too.  Just not in the same category as Guild Wars in my opinion.

Awesome group PvP.  Although I've had some fun PvP in WoW, I had more fun with it in Guild Wars.  And if you can't find someone to complete your party, you can pick up NPC henchmen with some of the best A.I. I've seen in a game like this.  Then go head-to-head with an opposing team.  There's a lot of strategy involved and to me, it's just more fun than WoW.

Seamless world.  This is a given.  New technology and implemented well.  The days of Loading... Please wait, for a zone to develop, are over.  Really helps the game be immersive rather than a lot of waiting to go from one zone to another.

No monthly fee.  This is the ultimate pro.

    (Cons)

Smaller world at first?  Have only played the Beta, so I have no idea how much of what I saw represents the total world.  Could be just a tiny fraction of the gameworld as a whole, or could be ... like half of it.  But in Beta anyway, the world felt smallish and limited.  Will wait to see if this was just a Beta thing.

More limited everything.  Again, it was just the Beta.  But items, quests, crafting, skills, magic abilities ... these things felt much smaller than WoW, not as much diversity or "trees" or "ladders".  We'll see if this grows substantially in the official release.

Quick leveling.  As I recall it took me about a week and a half to get to the max level.  What worries me is that if the game is free on a monthly basis, the real moneymaker for these guys is expansions.  If they make the world small and make it easy to get to level 20, people will be hungering for the expansions too soon... and to get the same amount of play as a monthly MMORPG, it could become just as expensive a situation.

    World of Warcraft (Pros)

Really fun quests.  This is the hallmark for a MMORPG in my opinion.  Eventually they all become "grinds", where you find yourself doing the same thing over and over.  But the best games are the ones that vary the quests enough to keep things fresh.  I think WoW does a great job with this.  The quests are fun, easy to organize, and give a real sense of roleplaying.  I think WoW does a better job of this than Guild Wars (Beta) did.

Blizzard!  It's a Blizzard game, so it's got a certain look, feel, and stability that we've come to expect from their games.  And with Blizzard running the show, you know it will be supported for a long time coming.

Crafting/Loot/Skills.  WoW defeats Guild Wars in this category for sheer numbers of skills, weapons, armor, etc. available.  Again, this is only now, compared to GW Beta.  But WoW definitely has the head-start in this area.

Mounts.  Mounts in WoW.  As far as I know, no mounts in Guild Wars.  I might get flamed for this because I didn't research enough to find out if any are intended for GW.

    (Cons)

Lag.  It's not -Terrible- mind you, but Guild Wars seemed virtually lag-free.

Load time for zones.  Again, this is about 95% missing altogether from Guild Wars, which gives them the edge.

Bugs.  I'm sure GW will have bugs, but even in the Beta, it was more bug-free than WoW, where I have had to petition for help several times in different buggy situations.

Both games enjoy instanced-type zones to cut down on farming competitions.

Anyway, there's my assessment of the situation at the present moment.  Just looking through my screenshots of both WoW and Guild Wars, I gotta say, I drool over the GW screenies, but the WoW ones make me want to log on to that game right now.

(Also looking forward to Dungeons and Dragons online)

I'm leaning towards Guild Wars. Besides the obvious no monthly fees, I think the expansion pack method is a lot better as it will insure the Devs keep adding content. Paying on a monthly basis for a game that never, or rarely, gets updated is not worth the money.

I have not played WoW so I can't really compare it beyond the screenshots, but Guild Wars appears to have graphics more to my liking (Not so Toonish). I've been a fan of Blizzard for as long as I can remember, so I think I'll check it out. Don't forget that Guild Wars have ex-Blizzard developers working on the project, so I'm sure both games will rock! image

cuz only the GW BETA can be played, and that are weekends... so not many people has time to play games in the weekend, and claim their own CD-key for the weekends..

I amazes me how many people will compare the amount WoW subscribers to the amount of subscribers a game that hasn't even released yet has. image

Regarding who has (or will have) more subscribers:

I think it will eventually be Guild Wars, for the mere fact that there is no credit card required to pay a monthly fee.  Even kids will only have to buy the game once to play it as long as they want.  They won't have to bother mom and dad for a credit card.

Not just kids, I'm sure the lack of a monthy fee will allow Guild Wars a broader player base.  There are plenty of people out there without a credit card or access to a store that sells pre-paid game cards.

It will be interesting to see.  I hope they both do well because they're both really good games.

I have played both WOW and GW, both are fun, but i probably like GW more, and with GW beeing without monthly fees the choice is easy. GW gets my money.

A few of my friends experienced unoticeable lag in Guild Wars with dialup. I think the streaming technology and the stable servers will also attract players especially those who do not have access to cable because there is none in their area, in addition to the other neat concepts it incorporates.
