What makes this game a good MMORPG?

YamotaYamota Member UncommonPosts: 6,593

And the keyword is MMORPG.

Because I have read and seen several videos of this game but I have failed to find anything about this game that would make it a good MMORPG. Single player yeah, nice storylines, good gfx, Starwars, light-sabres. Yeah all good for a single player game.

But what feature(s) will make it a good MMORPG? Because, right now, the game seems awfully like Star Trek Online in both that it is based on a huge IP and that it seems to be a single player game (or multiplayer lobby game) with a subscription fee.

Guess you'll just have to buy it and find out.

Well, based on what they have said and depending on whether they implement what they have said as they have said it, the game will have large open zones (presumably like EQ2) One can do group quests and there are incentives for group questing, People will be playing alongside thousands of others.

I believe they will have guilds as well, crafting and a way to sell to others.

So is that what you were looking for or was their something specific?

    Lets see...

    Huge open world - Check

    Exploration - Check

    Questing - Check

    Crafting - Check

Player housing (in the ships) - Check

    Grouping - Check

    PvP - Check

    Guilds - Check

    Dungeons - Check

    Raids - Check

Sounds like a reasonably standard MMORPG to me. And then of course there is the addition of the focus on story which no one has really done before.  As for your comment about STO... are you kidding? The difference in quality and polish between Cryptic and Bioware is like comparing KFC to some of the best fine-dining in the world.

Persistance mostly. Ever since WoW it seems to have become a lost concept.

And by that I mean that the conflict between Sith and the Jedi, Guilds vs Guilds or even groups vs groups is not something that stops or are in a ever-lasting circle where possibility of loss or victory is not there. For obvious reasons you should not be able to entirely destroy Sith or Jedi but to be able to score partial victories? And certainly one guild being about to destroy another, is the kind of persistance I am talking about.

And it does not even have to be about PvP. Even in PvE it would be nice to see an MMORPG with persistant features, like if you and your guild cleans out a whole population of a certain type(s) of a mob from an area then they are gone. If someone kill Jabba the Hutt then he IS dead.

Events that have a start and an finish with an end-result that actually impacts the world. You know, actual persistance...

Instead all I am reading is about cool Jedi/Sith classes, space dog-fighting, single player story lines. Sounds fun, but all that can be done in a single player game. So what does this game actually bring to the MMORPG genre beside yet another big IP with fancy bling, bling and in-depth single story lines that does not affect the world, what so ever?

All of your checks, beside maybe Raids, can be features of any single/multiplayer game. Really nothing MMORPG about those.

And raids, well its been done to death by MMORPGs since EQ 1 so nothing breathtakingly original there.

And my comparison to STO was only based on the MMORPG part, I am sure SW TOR will be 100x times a better game than STO but what new does it actually bring to the MMORPG genre?

umm maybe this posts shouldn't be just about swotor but about all mmorpg's because those things listed are what the most popular mmo's have that make them mmo's At least this one will add in the RPG factor with story. Not sure of any MMORPG's that have the persistence you are asking about.

  • segynsegyn Member Posts: 234

hmm that don't actually look like to much of a fan boi post to me. NO talking about how uber swtor will be in it just listing the mmorpg features the game is gonna have.

Well if persistence is not a main feature of MMORPGs then why be an MMORPG? Isnt the whole point of MMORPGs that you log off and the world keeps living? I.e. persistance?

All MMORPGs have that you say but the world that lives on, in those MMORPGs, are static. They could might as well shut down the server when you log off and the only difference would be that other characters wouldnt be able to advance. So in other words the only thing persistent about current MMORPGs is the player characters and basically nothing else.

But didnt Diablo 1 have that over 10 years ago?

yyup is hard to say what makes it good when you can't play it yet. might wanna ask this question after the game is released.

  • segynsegyn Member Posts: 234

sure but that why i'm asking why make this post about SWTOR specifically and not mmorpg's in general. Because of all the mmorpg's i have played they all lack what you are describing not just TOR.

The question is about the main features and mechanics of the game rather than the detailed game play and I assume most info regarding the former has already been released by now.

Major, fundamental game mechanics is not something that you put in so late in the development cycle.

Lol @ the puking coming from someone playing Aion and Warhammer online.

You're a well known TOR hater on these boards so your post doesn't suprise me. But please tell us which of the features checked by Anubisan isn't a fact?

First and foremost, I don't play Warhammer anymore, it's the game I have logged on Xfire for the most hours, that's it. Lastly, I'm stuck playing GAION as I have a year sub's payed for until January 2011 and I'm not about to let my money go to waste, although I despise AION and I hate NcSoft. I will never again make the mistake of purchasing a sub based game based on hype, the IP, the gaming company, etc.; never again. Developers/Publishers lie and hype their games too much to "steal" players money, noticed how I emphasized the stealing part.. That is why I have a problem with the SWTOR hype+fanbois, I want this game to succeed but I'm seeing the same trends I have seen in the past 10+ years of me playing MMOs.

Questing - Check we all know that there will be questing that doesn't make an mmorpg

Crafting - Check they haven't shown anything and till they do this should be no

Player housing (in the ships) - Check i wouldn't call that housing swg had housing.

Grouping - Check but it's mostly solo so i don't think anyone will use this

PvP - Check or so they say chances are it will be carebear 6 vs 6 fights in a mini game

Guilds - Check unless i see proof then no

Dungeons - Check chances are this will be instanced too

Raids - Check hate to break it to you pve folks but 8 classes do not make for raiding

tor does not sound like an mmorpg it sounds more like a single player game that will allow for multiplayer now and then. unless we see screen shots and video of players in an open world then it's not.

Why always the bickering about semantics? MMORPG, sandbox,  themepark, who gives a shit. I really hate it. Its always the same type of person who thinks he has to make up some ironclad rules about what a lable exactly means. And then starts policing the use of that lable. For what? To me it seems like some pathetic attempt of elevating yourself to some kind of expert in useless expertise.

All that matters if you think its fun.
