Just proves that the MMO genre has gone to crap, just all dumbed down casual games now. I want exploration and freedom in my MMO, not to be on rails and the ground game will probably hold your hand all the way through too.
Does everything have to be complex to be a good game? I don't understand what you're trying to say. It's dumbed down, from what exactly? What is complexity in terms of MMO gaming, because the design is simple the entire game is is damned to being nothing more then dumbed down?
And by holding hands you mean following a story they've laid out for you, sure the game will hold your hand. Oh well, it looks fun, I would know I follow games that look fun, I don't have this odd urge to follow games that don't. Hows that work exactly, you seem to be pro at it.
YEs they do have to be complex, after 10 rail flights how fun will the 11th be... ?.
Check this pro game out, sure its graphics are not omg but its got more game than that space combat.
I mean who sits around playing toos a coin, or push button win. No one becuase games are about challenge.
Complexity is the rate at which a game games. It doesn't have to be its enjoyablity, but it is the core purpose of a game.
Storys in games are good, but movies have stories, books, have them a lots of things have storys, games have stories, mudds have stories. But that don't mean you have to hold a the person experiencing that stories hand.
Your last statement is correct. And i agree with it. But if its just an interactive story, it will only be fun for limited time. Where as if it has challenge to overcome those challenges and do better next time is a driving motivator for gamers.
Im not on anysaide of this fight i just wanted to clear a few things up.

Probably just as boring as the 11th fly around in a black box littered with white dots and chunks of asteroids. Somehow I think this rail shooter would last longer, probably because of how visually beautiful it is. Not to mention these battles can be scripted into something amazing.
Check this pro game out, sure its graphics are not omg but its got more game than that space combat.
Yeah? How was the ground combat in this game? Oh it wasn't there, my bad I mistook this flight sim for a ground based combat game because I didn't read up on it.
I mean who sits around playing toos a coin, or push button win. No one becuase games are about challenge.
Games are a mix of chellenging moments and should remain fun though out the entire experience. Space is one of those fun experiences, the ground combat is probably where you will find your challenging moments. But I'm not saying this wont be challenging, you haven't played it yet, it could be one of the most challenging moments in the game. Not to mention, challenge is subjective depending on the person, somebody may be lacking in this space combat department while being fantastic on the ground, and somebody else could be the opposite. What is not challenging to you is pretty challening to somebody else.
Complexity is the rate at which a game games. It doesn't have to be its enjoyablity, but it is the core purpose of a game.
uhhh....what?is the rate at which a game...games? I'm lost maybe I'm reading this wrong, care to explain it to me again?
Storys in games are good, but movies have stories, books, have them a lots of things have storys, games have stories, mudds have stories. But that don't mean you have to hold a the person experiencing that stories hand.
You haven't played it, so you have no right to say it's holding your hand or not. Mass Effect 2 let you explore planets, you could practically go where you wanted. It had a story but no hand holding, the mini-games were easy, like planet scanning but the main game could be challenging.
Your last statement is correct. And i agree with it. But if its just an interactive story, it will only be fun for limited time. Where as if it has challenge to overcome those challenges and do better next time is a driving motivator for gamers.
Again, fun for a limited time depends on the player. Me, I've played Mass Effect twice, Mass Effect 2 three times and DA:O over 6 times. All I'm doing now is waiting for new DLC content. Endgame hasn't been talked about in SWTOR, the story will take you there. There is also group content during your leveling experience, which can be challenging and is said to be non soloable like WoWs 5 man outdoor quests, lol....northrend.
Im not on anysaide of this fight i just wanted to clear a few things up.
Like I said, challenging doesn't mean anything until you've tried it. I don't think this game will be an insane challenge, really I don't. What I do think is, it will have its challenging moments. To expect a game to be completely challening today is wishful thinking, it happens to few times. But most of the time, they have their moments.
anyway if one is looking for pvp in space, should go play EVE online for that instead
honestly, if everyone that wants good space combat goes to eve and everyone that wants a star wars experience goes to swg and everyone that wants a game with glowing swords and magic goes to WoW and everyone that wants a good bioware game goes to ME2, we won't have a whole lot of people left to have these discussions.
for better or worse, SWTOR is what we've got. most of us who don't like it's direction will still play it. i think most of us are also pretty sure we'll have SOME fun doing it. i don't see any reason to curtail discussion of how it can be better or what parts of it will be disappointing.
It's beginning to look more and more like Star Trek with added voices... What a great game that was.
I hardly see any differences, except ST had an NPC ship crew along with planet NPC play (oh I forgot Tor also uses them as planet aids).
Great game EA. But where are you going to recruit those 2 million subscribers ? By using voice overs?
You people didn't bitch at Star Fox. This doesn't look half-assed to me at all, it looks like it's exactly what they wanted it to be.
But seriously, they better add barrel rolls.
Playing: *sigh* back to WoW -------- Waiting for: SW:TOR, APB, WoD --------- Played and loved: Eve and WoW -------- Played and hated: WoW:WotLK, Warhammer, every single F2P

The whole advantage of rails is that you cut to the chase immediately...you just accept into the mission and away you go. Because you aren't trying to simulate the entirety of space what you can do is more quickly generate engaging and varied rail space missions, I am guessing having a zillion in the launch game would be possible at game launch and this would give you the variety you are looking for. This could rock folks and be an absolute blast to play through.
If its anything like the Rogue Squadron games, then I'll probably enjoy it. I bought a Game Cube years ago just because it had the newest Roque Squadron. I also have a feeling that space pvp will be similar to what Battlefront 2 has.
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.
This game is probably also going to have player housing in the form of your own private space ship that you use to get from planet to planet (like the Ebon Hawk or the Normandy). You can still imagine that you're drifting around in space. We don't really need an entire galaxy to drift around in, it would get lonely. And creating a wide open universe sandbox is outside of the ability of the Eclipse Engine which I assume this game uses. If you want a space drifter, play EVE or wait until Infinity comes out.
The recent trailer shows us that the only space combat will be staged (pvp) or storyline (and on rails), this means the other party is aware they are taking part in it (or an NPC). You wouldn't want to accidentally drift into a Mandalorian Battlecruiser or be ganked by a squadron of red female Twi'leks while you're afk in the bathroom would you?
Sadly I don't think we're going to have any PVP space combat, I can't think of any possible way to do it on rails.
I'm not a fan of PVP anyways, especially space combat that would require non-retarded fingers and a good reaction time that quite frankly I don't have. If they're going to have dynamic on-rails action-packed space combat missions with scripted events as part of their storyline, so be it. Bonus points if they can pull off multiplayer co-op missions.

The game uses the Hero Engine. Which is probably based on all their other engines. This game looks like it plays like KOTOR or Dragon Age, which are almost identical in playstyle. Dragon Age uses the Eclipse Engine, the Hero Engine is just their next model of the same thing they've been making this entire time.
I was hoping this game would play like Mass Effect 1+2 and be FPS style, but then I remembered I suck at FPS games and settled with the other style, which is fun too. It's more ping-lag resistant at least. I cannot imagine how much multiplayer space missions will lag due to bad connections.
More Bonus Points if they have starfox style backwards-flying-boss fights.

It's kinda cute how you try to sound like you know what you're talking about. Bioware liscenced the Hero Engine. They did not write it, it is not based on anything they have previously used. At all.

The same thing happened with KOTOR 2 and it ended up essentially the same as KOTOR 1.
I'm pretty sure this game stems from the same recipe. I've seen the play movies enough times to know it's the exact same game that Bioware keeps releasing no matter what studio they rent their stuff out to, and you'd know that if you played their games.

Would be kind of funny to see "they turned space combat into a mini game?!?!?!" Hitler rant, and no I am not a TOR hater, I just think it would be funny to see that.

Geez, and I thought the ground combat looked ****ing terrible...
I wonder whats going on in the corridors of Bioware... I mean, I am no programmer, but don't they have gamers to test out their products, or are they approving their own product? Anyone (excluding hardcore fanbois) would see this is not good enough for the 2012 market.
This would not even be able to compete against World of Warcraft back when it was released. Well well, doesn't bother me much, but I had 'some' hopes about this.

I wonder whats going on in the corridors of Bioware... I mean, I am no programmer, but don't they have gamers to test out their products, or are they approving their own product? Anyone (excluding hardcore fanbois) would see this is not good enough for the 2012 market.

To be fair Bioware has never highly prioritized gameplay or the innovations thereof. They've just always been terribly pedestrian in that respect.

YEs they do have to be complex, after 10 rail flights how fun will the 11th be... ?.

Yay! Another thread with people bitching!
You people didn't bitch at Star Fox. This doesn't look half-assed to me at all, it looks like it's exactly what they wanted it to be.
But seriously, they better add barrel rolls.

If its anything like the Rogue Squadron games, then I'll probably enjoy it. I bought a Game Cube years ago just because it had the newest Roque Squadron. I also have a feeling that space pvp will be similar to what Battlefront 2 has.

[Mod Edit]
Yeah, the Hero Engine was not made by Bioware. They liscenced it years ago.
People might know that if there was some strange magical thing that allows you access all kinds of info in seconds instead of just making uneducated guesses and statements. If there were such a fantastic thing, I think it might be called the internet and be invented by Al Gore.

It's a series of tubes.
Good lord, man! How about you use Google or something before you post? Bioware didn't make KOTOR 2. Obsidian did.

don't be too hard on them ginaz.....some people are just "special"
Would be kind of funny to see "they turned space combat into a mini game?!?!?!" Hitler rant, and no I am not a TOR hater, I just think it would be funny to see that.
