    GW2=WAR with Catpeople

    SWTOR=WoW with Lightsabers.

    There are you happy now?

lol at comparing GW to WAR?

I personally feel all three games are going to set this forum on fire, noone will be happy but thats just me lol.

    what do you think?

You already gave answer yourself :D

They will all three bring nothing new just all of same ol same ol....

GW2 doesn't seem like same ol same ol to me. Go do some research. Then again you'd be hard pressed to ever say any MMO will bring anything new considering I remember you looking towards DF as the greatest blast from the past.

All i know is that when squaresoft merged with that one company to form square enix, all their games went to shit.

I mean final fantasy 13? LOL that was the worst game ive ever played and was a PISS poor excuse for an rpg.  I was a huge fan of the FF series and after ff 10 my interest just declined.  Im not expecting ff14 to be anything special.

Personally, I'm really excited about FFXIV dropping soon and while I don't think it will be a HUGE success or "the WoW killer", I still think it will succeed.  Never really played GW, but from everything I've read, it seems to be a solid game, so GW2 would stand to do well also.  TOR...  As much as I love the IP, I'm afraid that this one may go down the hole...  With what I've seen for hype of the three, TOR is trying the hardest IMHO and when I've seen a game get hyped this hard, it usually doesn't end well.  Which sucks, cause ever since I was a kid... who didn't want to be a Jedi?  Either way, some potentially good games are coming soon!

  • PhelcherPhelcher Member CommonPosts: 1,053

None of these games are original, or new concept. Just more of Allods, WoW and warhammer...

Mortal Online and Everquest 3 are the only 2 MMO's to keep your eye on. Other than that, it's just Battlefield and Guild Wars...

MO is terribly underfunded and will never reach it's potential.

I don't know why you would the hell anyone would keep an eye out for EQ3 after EQ2 and EQ1 (post SOE intervention).

GW2 is the only MMO I have hope for. JGE is close but I'm not sold yet. TERA and The Secret World are going to be hit or miss, I think they're just going to be watered down experiences in hopes of being "accessible" to everyone. And I'm not looking forward to SWTOR.

    .

Doesn't that seem like they should do really, really well? Like WoW numbers?

Not necessarily.  Spending a lot of cash is certainly no guarentee of quality or sucess, and while its true they've published lots of successful games, this is their first MMO in a very crowded field.

Bioware are supposed to be aiming for about ten million box sales, go do the math, if they hit that and with a polished game they might worldwide we are talking a huge cash cow of an mmo based on sales. WoW is an old game, and if its players find a new game fix they will go.

Not sure where you are getting those numbers from.  EA went on record saying they needed 1 million to break even and were expecting about 2 million.  I think if this game appealed just to the BioWare PC market they could hit their break even point and then some very easily.  If we can count on additional subscriptions from MMO or Star Wars fans, I think 3+ million could definitely be possible.  Its really a matter of wait and see though.

Greg Zeschuk started going on about those numbers in conferences recently and given that they have for example somewhere between 4-5 million registered for their SWTOR website I think those numbers possible goal.

    Quick answers:

TOR, if it feels like KOTOR and KOTOR II, then it will kill WoW.  If it don't feel like KOTOR then it will fail like no MMORPG has failed before.

GW2, there is no monthly fee.  I don't think it can fail really.

FFXI, the sick sexual predator Tarutaru lovers will keep this game afloat.

That is my opinion on this thread.

Wait...so NONE of these games seem to add ANYTHING new to the genre? Yet we should all keep an eye on MO? WOAH!

    Here's the thing-

FFXIV adds some new things to the genre by adding some new mechanics that only their prequel had. FFXI, hate it or love it, was a pretty unique MMO if you ask me....and anyone else who ever even looked at it.

TOR is adding an ACTUAL story to the game, which a lot of MMOs lack. They're trying to create a feeling for the player of depth and purpose. If they can pull this off while not annoying players with tons of cutscenes and voice-text, it could spell a new feature that MMOs will focus on in the future.

GW2 is adding some new concepts to the genre, hell they already did with GW1, although GW1 wasn't an MMO. Bringing the innovations they had from GW1 into an MMO sequel means...guess what? Originality and new concepts. As much as GW2 has in common with WAR, they've either completely evolved some of WAR's content, or created their own, new concepts into the genre.

@Xemous- I agree 100%. Square-Enix isn't the same company anymore and hasn't been ever since the merge. FF7 was the last good game imo. Whatever happened to the Vagrant Story's? The FF Tactics? The Chrono Trigger's? Probably never gonna get games like that again from them. And if we do, I assure you they'll be filled with a full cast of effeminate, emo guys.

Hard to tell, but from what I have seen, I will say this why I personally think these games will fail

TOR: Ridicuolous gfx. On the edge to being plain childish. The space combat trailer is utterly fail.

GW2: Game looks non-responsive, as well as when I looked at video, seeing all those numbers flying over mobs' heads; I thought; Oh, this is just like World of Warcraft... a big yaaaaaaaawn.

FFXIV: GPX fail there too. Non responsive toons, and looked like they were floating above ground. Stumbling into other players just loooked wrong there. Utterly fail.

My best bet of these 3 is TOR. I do think it will fail just as STO did. What is wrong with all these new MMO's; it seems that the companies are aiming for the 10 year old kids, not the mature part of the MMO players; thus those who have the money. Kids plays TES and Wiii and so on, while you get older you outgrow those consoles.

What we might be pleasantly surprised over though, might be The Secret World from FunCom... That's the game I am hoping most for.

    My 2 cents. Nothing more.

I think TOR will do very well, GW2 will exceed expectations and FFXIV will fall on it's face.

Hows it going! What are the best games so far?

  • ElikalElikal Member UncommonPosts: 7,912

Games don't flop because they are critizised (or "hated" as the new tool-word is from some). I mean, look at WOW to see how little effect hate and flaming has, teh. No, bad games make games fail. Overall the MMORPG.com forum posters are a small part. Most people who play MMOs don't read or post in forums ever. So we here are a very exclusive club, you might say.

    Anywhoo. Here comes my prediction.

SWTOR: Gonna sell a LOT of boxes. It has the hype and big names behind it. My guess is, it will neither flop nor be a WOW killer. It will prolly establish itself in a margine like LOTRO. Maybe one million constant players kept, after the initial hype has died down. Most will not perceive it as a real MMO for several limitations, like only a very simple crafting, not so free roaming in open worlds, tight story railroading asf. Many MMO gamers just prefer to be less themeparked and more open making a sort of alternative life. There just ARE a lot of MMO gamers who would prefer to be Uncle Owen rather, and IMO Bioware never really understood that. However, the addition of epic stories will definitely leave a mark on MMOs for the future.

GW2: IMO the most likely candidate for making a dent into WOW we ever had. Partially because of the f2p model. It also seems to have a strong emphasis on story, it also has VO, it looks very cool and the combat is very innovative in the way powers and environment react.  I just say, burning arrows shot through a fire. My guess is GW2 will be the main winner of the new MMOs, prolly establishing with several million players. Something between 3-6 millions in the mid term.

FFXIV: Not my pair of shoes, since the combat seems WAY too long winded and I never was a fan of the FF look. It surely has it's fan audience, the FF geeks, who will love it, but in the Western market I don't think it will fare much better than, say, Aion, once the initial hype vanished. I did not see, so far, anything that really seperates this from any previous MMO.

TERA: I played this, and found it wanting. Surely something like a mix of WOW meets Aion. Again it has this Asia-look (a bit), which I am not so much a fan. Between all the other games it is my impression TERA will have it difficult to get attention. Nothing really remarkable IMO.

RIFT: For me one of the secret hits in the making. It looks unique enough and still not too absurd like TOR. Rifts mayor problem is, that too many never have heard of it. IMO the company should make more and better PR. Other games had suffered a lot from the faith in a "word of mouth" PR idea. It never really works in our days, especially when the competition is so stiff. Maybe such a small company lacks the funds for large adventising, I dunno. It played fun at the gamescon and the world looks fresh and interesting. Rifts strong and equally critical point: the rifts. They are supposed to appear all over, change the landscape and be "public quests", similar to those from WAR. If that is good, who can say. I think Rift looks great and fun, but the lack of being known will prove it's biggest issue. I guess it will establish low but with a loyal and happy playerbase.

My biggest ? to the GW2 community that thinks GW2 will kill WoW is, "What makes you think they will quit playing WoW?" GW2 has no sub meaning they can play both.

Better yet I plan on buying SWTOR along with GW2. GW2 will be popular because its free. Had it not been I would not even both as would most people.

GW is not free because its successful.

    Its successful because its free.

    magic 8 ball says:

    - SWTOR: money grabbing scheme, couple millions of boxes sold, 10% (if that) retention rate after just 3 months. WoW on space with personal story that people will just skip to deliver ten space rats faster

    - TERA: WIll have its followers, but wont be big at all in west. Good initil sales, then it will spiral down exactly like Aion

    - FFXIV: disaster on the making, I seriously picture people going back to play XI over it, it sucks so much in every possible aspect that its almost a joke which someone forgot to add humour.

    - GW2: tremendous success, it will make the foundations of the MMO genre crumble. The first decent game released since Ultima Online, the last decent game released till 2047.

SWToR and GW2 will be huge hits for sure. Dunno about FF14, looks too slow for my taste, but there are millions of FF fans, so it will have its piece of market. There are other big MMOs in the making, like Archage and Rift. Next year will be interesting, thats for sure

  • RhevinRhevin Member UncommonPosts: 611

FF XIV seems to only appeal to those that have been playing it for years. I really didn't care for the beta at all.

I didn't care for the first series of Guild Wars, but apparently a lot of people look forward to Guild Wars 2. I guess I'll givei it a shot; I mean, it'll be F2P like the first one right?

All in all, as a five year vet from World of Warcraft, I don't really see myself leaving anytime soon. I'll go on a one or two month stint to EVE or to try another MMO, but I always go back to World of Warcraft. /shrug
